This is the first Melissa & Doug toy that my son received. I added it to a wishlist for him and he got it as a present when he was 2 just before Christmas in December 2011. He loves letters, number and shapes and knows and recognises many number and lots of shapes and colours, so he has enjoyed telling us which numbers the pieces are and the colours etc. as well as slotting the pieces in the right slots. On the packaging it says suitable for 3+, I think it is fine for younger children, although I doubt my son will use it for it's main function of learning to tell the time until he is a bit older. The clock came in see through plastic with a cardboard back with information about the shapes included and suggestions for activities.Unfortunately I've thrown this out, but we still seem to be muddling along without it!The only negative that I've found is that it has slightly confused my son that the numbers on the shapes sometimes relate to their attributes and sometimes not. For example, he recognises pentagons and knows they have 5 sides - the 5 in the clock in a pentagon (and the 4 is a square and the 6 is a hexagon, the eight is an octagon), so from this he has extrapolated and now says things like 'an oval has seven sides' because the number 7 piece is oval shaped. I guess as he gets bigger he'll understand that they are not all following the same pattern.Apart from that it is great and it has some interesting, more unusual shapes e.g. number 1 is a quatrefoil (I didn't know this one, learned it from the packaging!) and number 2 is a parallelogram.Definitely recommended and I've already bought another one for a friend with a little girl of the same age as my son. I'm going to get more Melissa & Doug toys as they seem to be very good quality - v nice to have something other than plastic tat :) The only other M&D thing I have at the minute is the chunky vehicles puzzle, which I've reviewed as well.Edited to add: the names of the shapes are actually printed in the back of the clock, so the only info I lost from the packaging is the suggestions for how to use the clock.

We purchased this shape sorter for my son who was 15months as it takes up less space (more portable) and easier to use than sorters which enclose the pieces once they are placed inside the sorter. The sorter is attractive and my son likes the clock handles. The numbers on each piece help the lo's to find where to place the piece and reduce frustration (a bit). There are a good assortment of pieces and I like that the clock is angled for easier viewing. The downside to this product is that one of the shapes (I think it is the pentagon) can fit in the octagon slot which is a huge flaw because the baby then gets positive reinforcement for an incorrect placement.I've notices this issue with quite a number of other shape sorters as well however, these were inferior quality ones not made by melissa and doug. Overall I am disappointed with the flaw and hope for others that it can be rectified in future models of the shape sorter. The sorter itself is not a lot of "fun" for the baby- at least not a 15mo old one. The sorter is hard work and all of the pieces scattered about can overwhelm and frustrate the child as he sees the task before him. It is best to remove all pieces and have the baby deal with one piece in view at a time.Overall I like the sorter for its uniqueness and portability

My two year old was given this for Christmas and she loves playing with it. My slightly older niece was also given one and I hear it's gone down a storm in their house too.I think it is a great toy. Melissa and DOug products we have are all great quality and durable. It's a bright, appealing looking item with a wedge shaped base that makes it easier for the child to see and use when placed on a flat surface. This helps teach shapes and hand/eye co-ordination, colours and numbers, as well as having the clock and info relating to time telling for when my little one is older. I was kind of relieved to see that the names of the shapes are on the back of the clock (could they not have included acircle and left out the quatrefoil??)so I can make sure I'm getting them right.I was surprised reading the reviews to see someone say they could fit one of the shapes into the wrong hole. I've just checked on ours and it's impossible with the clock we have. Maybe the design has been changed?Another great M&D product!

There are so many different products on the market to learn about numbers, shapes, fitting blocks into the right places and telling time etc. Despite the age recommendation, I bought this for my 1 year old as it will last for years to come and being wooden is highly durable. In this regard it's great value for money and is condensed into one toy instead of having all the separate ones lying around. My little one loves throwing the blocks around for the time being but is learning to fit the shapes into the right places and figuring out numbers slowly. I know she'll be playing with this for years to come as she moves through the developmental stages. Her older friends also get great satisfaction from playing with this.Highly recommend!

I gave this to my niece (18 months) for Christmas and she's been playing with it daily ever since. She loves taking the pieces out and throwing them around the room before bed (so they're durable) and then spends the time when she wakes up working at putting them back in the holes. When I last visited her she took great pride in showing me how the pieces go (she couldn't get all of them, so she won't tire of the product for a while). My sister, meanwhile, is happy because the toy will also help with counting and time telling in due course. This doting aunty, therefore, is very happy with her choice of gift.

My two year old was given this for her birthday, as it was something my older daughter didn't have and was something my younger daughter had started to show interest in at a friend's house. Since unwrapping it (which was greeted with a "wow!"), both daughters have been playing with it pretty frequently. The colours and shapes offer another "finding" level for the two year old, and my 5 year old likes to show us the time. It is chunky, colourful and appears well made, as we have come to expect from Melissa and Doug toys. Well reccommended.

My daughter really liked this - got it around 22 months and in no time was identifying the shapes and colours. I can see it being helpful in teaching her times in the future. The only thing that stuck me was the fact the triangle has a 3 on it, the quadrilateral has a 4 on it, the octagon has an 8 on it however the hexagon has a 5 on it and the pentagon has a 6 on it. Bit strange, but anyway outside of that, the education possibilities are great with this toy.

When it arrived I wasn't impressed with the finish as it looked like some of the paint was damaged and was going to send it back. However on closer inspection it looked like the paint had just run over the holes and hadn't be tidied up very well. I gave this to my daughter for her birthday and she absolutely loved it, she's even surprised me how fast she was sorted the shapes. The paint was just an over run around some of the holes so was easily tidied up.

I really love this toy! I like the nostalgic feel and quality of wooden toys, hence this was a no-brainer! I saw it going for a lot more expensive in London once, so I thought I'd check it out on t'internet; and to my pleasant surprise it came at a great price together with the food basket! My 2 year loves it, and is confident with the shapes and beginning to learn numbers; it looks really nice, and I would thoroughly recommend it for 2 years and above!

Our 2y old has a passion for clocks, and shapes... He is struggling with his colors and numbers still (well, normal at that age) so this sounded like the perfect toy to help him train with these. Colourfull and with so many different aspects that depending how you decide to play with it it might appear completely new to the child ;-) At the moment we keep it as our secret weapon, to play with only when everything else fails to canalise our twins' energy

I bought this for my grandson's 4th birthday present as he said he wanted to learn the time. When he opened it he just looked at it and I thought to myself, 'oh no, wrong decision'. He hasn't bothered with it much but it is one of those toys which will be brought out from time to time - let's face it, learning the time is a bit boring. Having said that, I think it is a good tool with which to learn the time.

I brought this for my little one, 2.5 yrs old for a christmas present. If im honest its not been overly played with since but i know in due course it will be played more, together like most of our puzzles. Its very educational learning colours shapes numbers and time. Its made from wood so the pieces are nice to touch and its made well. As a colourful toy it looks lovely displayed in the bedroom too!

Good quality, very beautiful colors, my 2 year old plays a lot with it. Educational toy: teaches shapes, numbers, colors and later on will teach time.It says it's suitable from 3 years+. That's why I give this toy to my girl only when I'm around, just to be on the safe size. But I think it's ok for toddlers a bit less then 3 years old.Could make a really nice present too. Totally worth the money.

The hands of the clock are chunky and durable. The blocks are well made and chunky. I bought this toy for my baby even though he is a bit young to understand it fully but he likes it and enjoys taking the shapes in and out. It is durable as my baby throws it about and puts the shapes in his mouth and it still looks brand new. Good educational toy too for number and time when he is older

A huge favourite already! We keep this at dinner table and it's been an excellent addition. Our 2 yr old loves numbers.....and shapes so this clock is ideal. At present it is used for telling us what number he's picked up and then identifying the shaped hole it goes into. We haven't used the clock hands / time teaching yet, but we will. Great value. Gets played with daily!
