As others have mentioned here, the cutouts on the side of this sorting box van are complete holes in the shape of the respective animal, so you can pretty much post any animal into any hole and the wooden animal will fall into the centre of the truck. There's a door at the back to open up to remove animals afterwards. But this makes for a nice bit of interactive play where you can see if your child can work out which slot matches which animal, but left to their own devices the child can still post stuff and have imaginative play.If you are very careful or you fill the truck with padding, you can also balance the animals in their cutout. The two drivers at the front lift in and out of their slot, and they can get posted as well. The wooden truck pushes about freely on its four plastic wheels and the animals can stand up on flat surfaces. Because it's big and robust with no small parts, this 'Melissa & Doug' truck is suitable for age 2 upwards, although we got it for a friends 7 month old baby where the toy functions as a nursery ornament on the child's dresser at the moment (where it looks quite classy). As the truck is so easy to handle and can be used in a simple or complex sorting fashion, it has good play value for older toddlers. It's also well built from wood and seems good value at around £13. The only disappointment is that it comes simply wrapped in clear cellophane, whereas if it came in a basic outer printed cardboard box it would look a bit more like a new toy (we gave it in its Amazon delivery box). Still all ages seem to like this large sorting truck, so 5*.

This is a wonderful toy in both concept and quality and will, I'm sure, have a lasting impact on a child rather like those wooden Brio train sets did on me. This safari truck is colourful and comes with seven animal shapes plus a male/female driver/ranger. The quality of construction is excellent (and mainly wood except for the wheels) but above all the colours, shapes and attention to detail are really special. However, the appeal of this toy goes beyond its looks, the idea of the fitting the animals through the shaped apertures in the side of the truck and then retrieving them via the sliding cargo door will appeal to, and teach young minds.I tried this toy out on a 3 year old and he was most reluctant to give it up!This is my first experience of the Melissa and Doug brand and if all its products are this good it really does deserve to prosper. I think this toy also represents outstanding value for money given how well it is made. There is only one minor anomaly to be resolved, and that is that on this page it suggests this toy is suitable for children over three years yet the labelling on the product suggests 2 years and upwards. Given the quality of this item I would not be concerned about this ambiguity but I am just mentioning it so that the information can be made consistent. This is a lovely toy, well made and with plenty of play value, and, at a very good price. Recommended.

Taking a toddler on a Safari may not be the best idea; if they run off they may just end up being something’s lunch. The next best thing may just be ‘Melissa & Doug Animal Rescue Shape Sorting Truck’, an excellent toy that will entertain any tyke with a love of animals. It comes with crocodile, lion, giraffe, hippo, rhino, zebra and humans; all very well painted and made out of quality wood. As well as all these great creatures you also get a safari truck which allows you to fit the animals though holes - or the people if you wish. The entire thing is finished beautifully and, as it is on wheels, it is also fun to roll around. This is an incredibly simple toy, but executed perfectly.Toddlers will have a great time playing with it, but it also acts as a great way of describing different animals and colours. I know one toddler who loves their set.Sammy Recommendation

this is a high quality, wooden toyset, and really is several toys in one. The animal shapes are really endearing, and make for good play on their own due to the character and feelsome nature of the beasts; the truck is a big, fun piece of wood, with decent manufacturing and good solidity and the whole thing is a nice toybox into which various smaller toys seem to find their inevitable way before being trucked around the roomWhy not 5 stars? Well, it isn't cheap, the images on the shapes are slightly crudely printed (with some misalignment of the man figure where some of the print layers are out of kilter, and the shapes perhaps fit a bit too easily through the wrong holes to make this a really good shape sorter (inevitably, most things go into the elephant!)My boy loves it, so should yours.

I love the subtle colours used in this Animal rescue Shape Sorting Truck - quite a change from the usual vivid colours of many toys. Our youngest family member loved it from the start. The wheels move really easily and the truck is great from pushing around any carpet-free floor. J loves releasing the back flap and lifting our the animal shapes to play with them. What this does not get used for is as a shape sorter. Why try to carefully place the animal shapes in the correct slot when they can just as easily be "posted" horizontally? In fact, to place the shapes correctly in their slots requires a great deal of dexterity. It would be easier if each shape had a small peg protruding for tiny hands to grip on.Nonetheless,it is a good addition to our toy box.

This is a fun wooden shape sorter that's perfect for toddlers and children from about 18 months and up. Its nicely built out of natural materials, with colourful and interesting shapes. Additional entertainment is offered by the fact that the truck actually rolls on its wheels and the driver and passenger can also be removed. If there is a downside its that, because the shapes are wide and flat, they can be inserted in the 'wrong' holes, which somewhat defeats the purpose of a shape 'sorter'. For example 22 month old daughter found it quite easy to slot the crocodile through the hole for pretty much any other animal. This robs the sorter of much of its potential as a learning tool.Still, despite this obvious flaw its a fun, attractive toy.

My almost 3 year old loves this toy and has been playing with it every day since we got it. The wood is great quality and it includes 7 animals and 2 drivers (one male, one female) which is great for role play and making up stories along with the truck. My children have been playing games about animals escaping from the zoo, having to catch them with the truck and lot of imaginative play. It also helps to work on problem solving skills as they match them up through the shape sorter. The truck is medium sized and seems to be really durable so far, I can see it getting lots of use. Great value and fun classic toy

My daughter got this for her 1st birthday and she loves it. It's still a bit too advanced for her atm for putting the shaped animals through the right holes but she loves taking the animals out of the trap door at the back and putting them back in. Before I showed her the trap door she'd put her hands through the holes, try to get the animals out, get her hand stuck and get frustrated/upset about it. I love the design of the truck and the animals and after 3 months it's still as good as new. My 2 year old nephew enjoyed playing with it so much when he was here their nana bought him 1 for Xmas.

I’ve long been a fan of Melissa and Doug toys and craft packs, I think they’re colourful and well made and represent good value for money. This truck sorter is no different; as well as being a decent sized truck to play with, there are a number of wooden animals which can be used with the ‘sorter’.Initially my daughter had some difficulty pushing the animals through the holes because the truck moved but she soon got the hang of it. Great for fine motor skills, learning your animals or just as a play truck. Great.

Really lovely item! My little boy was very excited when he saw it! He's a little younger than the 2+ recommendation on the packaging (although on here it suggests 6-36 months!!) but he enjoys the truck and its motions and the colourful and interesting shapes of the wooden animals! Great toy for imaginary play, problem solving, hand to eye imagination and learning animals and animal noises! Seems sturdy although the door at the back to open and retrieve animals is perhaps a little too sturdy!!!

As others have mentioned, this is pretty useless as a shape sorter because you can put most of the animals through most of the holes without matching them up. That being said, my daughter loves the animals as a stand alone toy, and she loves the vehicle as toy on its own too. She still puts the animals in through the gaps, just doesn’t match them up.It’s a beautiful toy and although it’s intended purpose doesn’t quite work, it is still great for developing her imagination and motor skills.

Not the best quality compared to some Melissa and Doug items we have. The front of the van actually arrived unstuck so we need to glue that back on. But didn't realise at first until we unpackaged it all on Xmas day.Not so much of a shape sorter as all the animals can fit pretty much in all the holes if you turn them sideways and they don't sit in the slots and face out of the van as the pic shows, they all fall into the body of the van. It's fine though, just not as good as I'd hoped

We love animals and my little one loves safari animals. This is a great wooden toy. The animals are big enough and chunky enough for little hands to grab and little mouths to chew, the truck is such a good size to be pushed along and played with. And it is also a shape sorted. The colours on it all are fantastic and keep little eyes focused on it.Great quality as always from Melissa and doug toys. They are fantastic. Would definitely recommend and am very happy with my purchase.

This is a great toy for a 2-3 year old. The wooden construction and wooden figures make it stand out from the usual plastic alternatives. I must admit my child doesn't put the right animals through the corresponding holes as they can fit in any - this might be the only negative I can say. It has kept her busy 'on safari' for hours and has been a great way for her to learn animal words.I would highly recommend as value for money.

Superb quality as always from Melissa and Doug toys. I bought this for my 16 month old grandson. He s a bit too young yet to work out how to slot the animals in and he struggles to lift the flap at the back. It also doesn't run very smoothly so he finds it hard to push along the floor so at the moment he isn't very interested in it so will put away until he's a bit older. Lovely looking toy though makes a good present
