It's never love at first sight with a good pair of walking boots. But I bought a pair of Meindl boots 20 years ago, and now I'm finally replacing them, I'm confident that things with the new boots will only improve (as the last boots did 20 years ago), and the result will be well worth the cost and the long breaking-in period. At first sight, the left and right boots are quite different. The right boot came all laced up, scuffed a little and a significantly lighter shade of leather than the left boot, which still had all its labels on.There are differences between the two boots that I can measure with a ruler, and differences that my feet can feel. Both boots have a significant amount of padding above the toe "knuckle" area. The right boot feels like it has significantly more.I wore them around the house on the carpet for a couple of hours and I've decided to keep them. I hope that's the right decision. With boots like this, that decision is a matter of faith in the manufacturer. They are very substantial, heavy boots. In this case it feels like they have a LOT of lacing! My feet feel well protected if a bit pinched in places. Unlike German cars the boots are NOT pieces of precision engineering. The final stage of manufacture is down to the user to break them in.The picture shows the boots in the condition they were in when they arrived. I've not worn them outside yet.Update after 9 months use:Quite a bit of cracking in the leather has appeared but they are now very comfortable. The problem was a lump at the base of the tongue, particularly the right boot. After walking an estimated 550 miles in total, I'm please to say that the lump has softened out and they now, finally, feel comfortable (although they no longer look pretty!). Being stout heavy boots my feet feel very protected inside them. If you can put up with the long breaking in period, I would recommend these boots.

Good old fashioned heavy boots, they've been all around the highlands, through rivers and snow and have been great at keeping my feet warm and dry!
