My previous chainsaw was an antique Black & Decker mains-powered device, that had been passed down from my father. It wasn’t the most powerful thing, but it did the job for light-duty sawing activities… just. Since that packed up I have resorted to manual sawing of logs.Then came the McCulloch CS 42S. And what a great piece of kit this is! I’ve not previously used a petrol chainsaw before, but I have to say it is pretty simple to use, and not as heavy as I had thought it might be - although that’s not to say it’s lightweight. Depending on the type of job you’re undertaking it could become quite tiring if you’re just using it for light duties,in which case you might prefer a smaller and lighter unit than this.This particular model is the middle of a range of 3 models, with the lesser model having a smaller 14” bar, and the top model having an 18” bar. But I’m happy with this 16” bar as it’s already bigger than the old mains-powered unit I used previously. This model and the top model also feature the special engine technology that is being lauded by McCulloch, which they call ‘OxyPower’ - and whilst I haven’t used a non-OxyPower engine to compare it with, what I will say is that it certainly does start easily, and it doesn’t seem too raspy or noisy compared to what I was anticipating.In use it feels relatively well-balanced, and the controls are where you would expect them. The materials used in the principal holding areas are quite tactile and feel like sensible design choices. So far all I have used this for is long stints of firewood chopping, which it has helped make light work of, but as mentioned previously it was starting to feel a bit cumbersome after a while, so a smaller and lighter unit might have been preferable if that was all I was going to use it for.Having a petrol chainsaw over a mains-powered one has made it feel a bit more ‘real’, and as such has made me think I don’t have enough of the right safety equipment - which strangely enough my time with the old Black & Decker never made me think that way.

First I must berate Husqvarna, a 553 page manual plus covers and only 20 pages are in my language, okay, its 20 pages of all good information, but surely a less wasteful method of producing a handbook is possible - putting it on line would be less wasteful even if I used a single sheet of A4 per page to print it out I would use less paper! Okay moan over with.This is NOT a toy, it is a proper chainsaw and should only be used following safety instruction. I have never seen a little nick inflicted by a chainsaw, its always a right proper mess, and on the odd occasion the cause of death. So don't use it unless you know what you are doing.That said; this is a capable saw, the housing is all plastic,the engine is 42cc's of easy start power. The anti-vibration system looks exactly like the one that is on my 35 year old Poulan, the chain brake works well enough and there is also an 'inertia' brake which operates if the saw is dropped and should only be tested with the engine off!The saw itself is a little heavy for a 16" bar. Empty, that is without the bar, chain, fuel or oil it weighs in at a hefty 10½lbs. Loaded, it jumps up by 5 lbs to a good 15lbs. Lugging this about for a period of time becomes a chore. My 16" Stihl M2 weighs in at 12 lbs full up.I do like the solid locking caps on the oil and 2 stroke tanks, a nice feature.For firewood, I will replace the bar for a lesser 12" one, which is a much handier size for logging wood ready for the fire, I will stick to my Stihl saws for felling and big stuff. I prefer the feel and balance of the Stihls, however, they are a lot more expensive than the Mcculloch brand from Husqvarna. So if you want a cheap to run, not too expensive saw - this is the one to go for, don't forget the safety equipment and use it with loads of care.

If your looking for an easy to use chainsaw ideal for all round use and one that offers both performance and value for money - then you've found it with this McCulloch CS 42S. It features a petrol engine rated at 42cc, a 16" bar with a 3/8" chain pitch, an easy to access air filter with a centrifugal cleaning system and a soft grip handle to name just a few.It's not overly heavy and easy to both start and use, its both well-balanced and the controls are bulky enough to find and use even with gloves on. It's ideal for frequent use and perfect for cutting branches, trunks and making firewood. It started first time without hesitation every time and because of the design of the CCS,purge ability and air-filter its quick to clean meaning you have to stop less often.This is a near perfect entry level chainsaw, the only limitations that I found was that it wasn't quite powerful enough for intended use at times, the plastic housing also makes me wonder how it will withstand the test of time and repeated use. Still a good quality and reliable chainsaw well worth considering.

Went for this as my frst chainsaw due to price and name, I have a 20 plus year old McCullough 2 stroke strimmer that still works fine. OK, the bodywork is plastic rather than metal on more expensive models, but at the offered price this is a real bargain. It comes with an Oregon semi chisel profile chain which cuts very efficiently. It is really easy to start and when warm requires only about 1/4 of the cord pulled to jump into life. Only things to be aware of (1) the fuel tank is quite small, so you will be refilling quite often (likely more than 6 times in a full day's work) (2) the air filter doesn't seal on particularly well, so you can get dust sucked in underneath that then lodges just above the choke valve,so clean with care. It can take a 16 inch bar as well. Overall very pleased. Please do get proper training and all the necessary PPE before using any chainsaw!

Great saw. I wanted a good value saw and didn’t have the need for the high end Stihl or Huskie brands, which are excellent top notch saws, but well outside my budget.I wanted something with a known brand name, as safety is a priority with chainsaws. McCulloch is owned by Husqvarna, so that ticked the first box. The bar length and engine cc were decent and suitable for all round use on the small farm I have.I’ve had the saw now for about 6 months or so and it’s been epic! Never once failed to start, build quality is decent for the price and it powers through the small and medium sized stuff I throw at it. All in all, a great buy.

Had a 20 year old McCulloch chain saw that finally bit the dust after lots of garden maintenance on some fairly large jobs, so I went and got another one. This is better than the previous version as its far cleaner - no more 2-stroke smoking when you are cutting wood. Note that the part numbers are Husqvarna, so if you want good quality but without the name, then get one.Chain tensioning and the initial start is easier on the newer models too.The only slight disappointment is that the chains from the old saw were a different pitch and tooth count to the newer one.

Brilliant - the only niggles at new ...1. is that the claw is not attached, which makes no sense, Only takes a couple of minutes to fit though2. on the first startup, it would not run at full speed, and I had to semi-squeeze the trigger, but after a while, it sorted itself out and is now perfectHowever, they always good are when they are new - time will tell if it is worth it. For £130 I would be happy for it just to last 5 years, but it does feel quality and I suspect it may last longer

This does exactly what it says on the box. I have now had the chainsaw for 6 weeks and used it several times. It was easy to complete the assembly and started first time, every time. I am sure there are better chainsaws out there but probably twice or three times the price. Compact, easy to use and perfect for general garden maintenance and log cutting.

I bought this small chainsaw for diy use to cut logs for a woodburner. It is a replacement for an 8 year old McCullock chainsaw which sadly died. I have just used it for the first time and found it very easy and comfortable to use and efficient for the required job. It seems quite powerful for a small machine. So far very pleased.

Needed small chainsaw for logs. The CS355 is perfect. Not too heavy, easy to use. Starts with just 1 or 2 pulls. Had to buy mixing bottle to get mix of 40/1 (shots I found are 50/1) Need to check bolts are all tight before use (general safety) brake kicked in well. Great little saw by reputable manufacturer couldn't ask for more

This is solid, well-made equipment. Starts easily. Gave it a tough challenge and it held up well. Nothing to dislike with this product and am very pleased with it.If you've not used a chainsaw before, don't forget to order the correct oil. There are 2 tanks - one for 2-stroke petrol and the other for the chain oil.

Used this non stop since purchased and it has perfomed brilliantly ! Used it to bring down and log a 30ft Cherry tree with no issues at all. Build quality is excellent and the chain performs very well, holding its edges for long periods of heavy duty cutting. Held its own against my mates Husq no bother.

Chainsaw arrived fully assembled just had to mix 40:1 ratio fuel 600ml of petrol to 25ml of 2 stroke oil mixed gently in a bottle until one consistent colour for me a (light red) colour yours may be different if using other brand of oil. and just had to add chain oil easy to start and light to carry.

Simple, easy to use, like a hot knife through butter! Need more trees to fell! I don’t think deforestation is anything to do with commercial goals it’s just blokes with chainsaws getting carried away!! I know because I have!

The saw its self is fine but it doesn't have tool-less chain adjustment as stated in the product description.this means loads of messing about with a spanner and screwdriver trying to get the correct chain tension.
