After waiting for a number of years for this game, it really didn't disapoint when it finally dropped. After a number of revised release dates by Bioware, the game was released with a classy promotion campaign that avoided much of the hype and hyperbole of Halo 3.I've discussed this game with many friends - as many who have not played it as those who have, all inquisitive as to what lies at it's heart. I'll tell you what lies at its heart: story, immersion and adventure. If you ever hoped as I did as a young kid that one day a game would emerge that would drop you into a huge, fantastic world that wasn't inhabited by golbins, faeries, orcs and elves, and that evolved as naturally as a well-crafted sci-fi film, then "this is the game you have been looking for".Within it, you will find subtle elements tucked away not just in the gameplay, but also in the look of the game, the feel of the game, the music, the dialogue, that will make your alien surroundings feel somehow familiar. This is all down to the amazing talents and efforts by the Bioware team who have to be commended on making a work of art - it's hard not to notice the occasional nod to such epic movies as 2001 A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner (the soundtrack owes a lot to the feel of Vangelis iconic score as well as James Horner's Aliens soundtrack), Logans Run (take a look at The Citadel's architechture for example) amongst others whilst avoiding many (if not all) of the usual comparisons with the Star Wars saga. Although this must have taken some concerted effort on the Bioware team, being so burnt into our generations conciousness, it does make for a far more engrossing (and in turn far less distracting) game.Yes, there are a few little glitches here and there, but when you bear in mind just what is going on under the hood, this can easily be overlooked, and I can honestly say that I've never found it so bad as to detract from the game - hopefully these few minor issues will have been ironed out for the PC port in may/june 2008)As a gaming experience, this remains to date, unrivalled, and I for one can't wait to see what Bioware do with episodes II and III (and no, that wasn't a Star Wars reference - honest)To summise:If you have a 360 (or indeed a PC with the up-coming release on that platform) then you really do owe it to yourself to buy this game and experience all the riches it has to offer you. Even if you are no RPG fan like myself, this is a whole different kettle of fish, with none of that turn-based nonsense getting in the way of immersion. This game truly does DELIVER THE GOODS - and does so in abundance. So often in fact that you'll find yourself hard pressed having to describe one moment that made your jaw drop when you're done. You'll not want it to end...

Finally, a game that actually lives up to the hype!!Ive seen a few dodgy reviews of this game, and must admit, and after watching a few videos was a bit sceptical as to whever this would actually be any good. Having the choice between Assassin's Creed and this, I chose to buy Assassin's Creed first and regretted the decision every minute (OMG Steven Neupert ive slagged this off again!! Quick, buy more copies of this so it stays at number 1!!).Without giving too much away, Mass Effect is set in the far future where humans maintain an uneasy alliance with a race of aliens aboard the Citiadel - a political seat of power where all the universes troubles and conflicts are resolved through a council.Thegame kicks off after your space patrol answers a distress call from Eden Prime - a far flung human colony under attack by an unknown enemy force. Upon landing your team discover the planet being invaded by an ancient race of android life forms known as the Geth - a living machine race dedicated to the complete destruction of all organic life in the galaxy. And so the game begins. As an RPG, Mass Effect is probably the best of this genre on the XBOX. Featuring some of the best graphics around (finally, true next gen quality), this game features an excellent blend of squad-based shooting and exploration that had me hooked for hours I couldnt put the pad down. I found exploring the galaxy an absolute joy, and with plenty of stuff to do I didnt find this game boring or a chore at all. (Again, this is where assassin's creed fell up on - take note there stevie-baby).However, Mass Effect is not without its faults, and hopefully, these will be ironed out for Mass Effect 2. Technically, it is let down slightly by its boring repetivie level design (some levels look exactly the same as early ones). Alot of textures and level design is reused again and again, and you can only land on one planet in each solar system, limiting the overall amount of exploration you can do. The combat is also cumbersome and canny bad, as you automatically hug walls in combat which leads to getting stuck and dying during hectic situations. However, all these niggles do nothing for the game, and Mass Effect still makes a brillant addition for the XBOX, and is a giant leap towards true next gen gaming. Although I completed this game within 18 hours I would gladly play it again, and would recommend this to future gamers. Cant wait for the sequel.

My eyes hurt, they do. I've just finished Mass Effect, racked up something like 35 hours and I don't think I've blinked for the last 2 of them.Without dwelling too much on what has come before, I loved Jade Empire. It was without doubt my favourite game on the Xbox. This, however, surpasses it. Easily.OK, let's get this straight before I go much further. This games frame rate is poor. Some of the collision detection is way off. There are parts where you'll walk your character into a spot you can't get out of, and saving and reloading doesn't help. But you know what?None of that matters a jot. What Mass Effect does wonderfully is pull you in make you a part of its universe. The voice acting is spot on,the quality of the cut scenes is awesome (given the niggles above), the interface is intuitive and if you're a sci-fi fan, the throwbacks to old films will keep you smiling from start to finish. This is a game with real atmosphere, at times I felt like applauding before realising there's something a little weird about clapping a video game in a darkened room at 2 in the morning.....The interaction between characters has been pitched brilliantly. The power struggle between the Captain and the ambassador I found particularly amusing. My only criticism of this aspect of the game would be the slightly odd romance subplot. Not sure why it was needed, or if it really works. If you're a fan of role play games, sci-fi games, action games, whatever, buy this. Buy it now. This is the most engrossing slice of video game pie I've eaten in ages. Now I'm going back for seconds.

Ah, Knights of the Old Republic was a good game, wasn't it? And now its creators are back with the first part of a new trilogy. Surely it will have the same moral choice and sophisticated RPG elements, but even better visuals? Surely it will be, officially, the Best Thing Ever?Well, no. Take the Jedi out of the Star Wars universe and you're seemingly left with a pretty soulless experience, full of dour posturing and mindlessly repetitive sub-quests. You have unprecedented opportunities to customise the face of your hero/heroine, but you can't make him/her crack a smile or a joke. You can spend your talent points on "Biotic" powers but never make them as good as the Jedi powers in the earlier games. You can choose a path of Good or slightly less good, while collecting things such as flags, artifacts, diaries, whatever. So, has it actually gone all Jar Jar? Well, my answer to that one would be "no" as well. This is still a decent game, and proves surprisingly addictive. The visuals, especially in the cut-scenes, are very good, although a stuttering frame rate and some odd loading points do mar this. Some of the quests are interesting, and the overarching plot (while incredibly cliched) is enough to pique one's curiosity. The real-time battle system is okay. Forget that all these aspects were better in KotOR, and you will probably be happy enough. With a significant shooter and vehicle-based combat element, this game does nothing badly, and can be considered a very solid Jack of All Trades. Overall, it's one of those games that's difficult to love and hard not to like.

What can I say, but yes! Bio ware has done it again. I was totally hooked into the game as soon as I started playing, this is one of the reasons why I ran out and bought my X360 in October, and I am not disappointed. I was just blown away at how good this game actually is, and I am salivating at getting back to playing it.From the moment you start chatting to members of crew on board your ship, including the Captain, to landing on the first planet and shooting the hell out of Aliens I'll be surprised if there isn't a big grin on your face. There was one permanently plastered to my face, and rightly so.I had no problem with the combat system, it worked fine and the graphics are great, the sound is great, everything about this game is great!!!!Don't be a fool, buy this game! Also if you have a chance to get the limited addition do. I got mine from Play, the day before release (I'm quite smug about that) but they seem to now be sold out on their site. The Tin it comes in is beautiful and the booklet and extras are well worth the extra £5 if you can get it for the good price of £45. Because I have no doubt in my mind that like Halo 3 the limited will be worth a lot more than £45 after it's release.

I haven't played an RPG this addictive since Oblivion was released over a year ago. This game entices you to complete it again and again using different allies on different mission and to choose different background stories, and classes. It also has a great storyline not quite as good as KOTOR but still very entriging and i can't wait for a sequel.Improvements? Allies need to move more around the ship you're on and so do the non interactive characters. But in the big picture an incredible game. I know i haven't mentioned the plot but thats because you need to experience it for yourself, a must have game.I'd recomend only playing it for an hour or two a day so that you can drag it out, instead of rushing through it.

This is a great game - a real cinematic experience. It was obviously rushed out to rack up Christmas sales as it's full of bugs (texture pop-up and AI is awful) and missing some of the promised conversation features, but even so it's still better than most other games out there, including on the PC.If you want a slow-paced Sci-Fi adventure story with plenty of action and exploration then this is the game for you. It has a fair bit of replay value too (some achievements can't be unlocked first time round and there is a higher level cap once you've finished) and additional content packs are promised containing a lot of stuff that should have been in anyway. Let's hope it's free.

Got this last Christmas, and when i got it i was pleased to see a great game under the wrapper, my god when i started to play this game i was on it for hours, there are endless quests and an everlasting downloadable content to add to the hours of gameplay, if you ever played Knights of the old republic and liked it you will love this because you have complete freedom of what you want to do, but everyone has to save the universe one day, oh and you could even compare it to oblivion in the freedom of speech, and the way you set up your character has impact on what you say, and what you say has impact in how the game plays out for you. A must buy...

Mass Effect simply is the best sci-fi creation I ever came across. The gameplay, non-linear story, art and design, music, voice-acting, and atmosphere are all top notch.Part 1 (this one) can feel slightly dated now, but we're talking 2007 here.Part 2 gets you deeper into the story, and opens up al kinds of plots.Part 3 got a huge budget, and just hits it out of the park for this trilogy. To me this is the best piece of MEDIA ever, it just feels 'real'.A masterpiece that took more then 7 years to create, starting out with a blank sheet of paper.

This game, absolutley brilliant bit ort for my liking though only took me 12 hours to complete when the new one out?!?!?!?! Only problem was they dont explain to you how to manual override the lockers!!!! ANNOYING!!!!!! anyone who took more than 20 hours has got to get help you need it!!!!

10.12.2007

Mass effect is a virtually flawless game in every aspect, RPG,real time action, suspence my only critisism if you can call it that is i found the main story line across the main planets very short, very good story but i thought it could have been drawn out to another planet or two.
