Bombproof duffel bags from outdoors brands started out as a purely practical solution of how to transport lots of gear through tough environments. Then they started to be a recognisable 'branding' exercise, lead by TNF with their famous Basecamp Duffel, making their way into the adventure travel market. Most other outdoors brands have something on offer - from the fully waterproof (Ortlieb, Overboard) to the wheeled varieties from Osprey and Eastpack for example.I like Marmot - I have one of their excellent neoshell zion jackets that has lasted for years and I bought one of their sleeping bags for my wife. But I think they have made some slightly odd design choices for my liking in this bag.Choices that indicate to me that they were more interested in how the bag looks and what price point they could sell it for rather than how it should behave. The first and most important of these for me is the mix of fabrics. The top half of the bag has a tarpaulin type fabric which is waterproof... but it doesn't extend very far. The underside is a heavy duty (probably 600 denier) woven fabric that doesn't seem waterproof to me. The point of an expedition duffel is that you don't know which way up it will find itself as it gets strapped to rooftops, slung over yaks, hauled up mountainsides or shoved in the bottom of a canoe. I'm not sure what Marmot's design brief was here but it wasn't 'must keep the content dry'.Secondly, all the internal zips, extra webbing and pockets add a lot to the empty weight. I have a full spec mountaineering rucksack with metal stays and larger 57l capacity that weights much the same as this bag. (Crux AK57 if you're asking). So it's not exactly light although beats wheeled luggage of a similar capacity. So as I say, these could put off the purist... BUTIt's actually a very nice bag if you're more in need of practical compromise and won't actually be taking it on an expedition. The zips are all well designed running smoothly. The internal colours are bright and appealing - also helpful in finding things in the bottom in contrast. The internal straps help you compress and secure items that you don't want moving about in the bag and layout inside is practical.Outside the bag, the combined grab straps / shoulder straps are surprisingly comfortable and adjustable. The tpu coated top flap makes for a reasonably comfortable back contact fabric. There are plenty of daisy chain loops around the edge of the bag if you want to attach accessories. The black and sky blue colours are maybe not my first choice but my daughter likes them and I doubt there'd be too many bags to confuse it with in the airport carousel. So ultimately, it's a useful and practical bag at a competitive price but it does slightly bother me that it's masquerading as something tougher and more waterproof than it actually is.

The definition of 'duffel bag' has clearly changed from my youth, as I think of them as rucksack-type bags with drawstring tops, however this 'Marmot Long Hauler Duffel Bag, Medium, Sport, Weekender, Travel Duffel, 50 cm, 50 Litres, Grey (Dark Charcoal/Blue Tint)' is much closer to a sports holdall which can be worn rucksack-style (to me). Confusion aside, this is a really beautiful bag. I was surprised to find that it came packaged inside a little drawstring PE-kit mesh bag, and don't really understand why it was but am pleased with the additional useful bag! The main bag is made of heavy-duty nylon, with a sort of rubberised waterproof flap top with a D-shaped zip, which makes it as weatherproof as such a bag could be without putting an additional rain cover on top (which could be done, and is probably to be recommended if you're going to be in extreme weather). The bag has two main straps, which can be adjusted through a wide range of lengths to facilitate the bag being worn either rucksack-style, with the straps separate to each other; or holdall-style, with the two fastened together with the velcro over-strap provided. Inside the base of the bag are a couple of straps to hold items down flat inside (they'd be flat against your back if you wore it rucksack-style), and there are lots of other secure pockets, which I have tried to show in my photos. There is a label which came on the bag which states that the bag can be folded into one of the end pockets - while the end pockets are indeed extremely roomy, I sadly lack the origami skills required for this, perhaps others will have more luck?Brilliantly designed, nice-looking, versatile and tough, this is an excellent bag for travelling and well worth it.

This is a good size at 50 litres, which could be crushed down to be used as hold luggage if required. The top of the bag is opened using a large D-zip and is waterproofed – although this fabric isn’t used on the other sides. With this in mind, it would be sensible to keep the bag in its normal orientation in wet weather; using it as a backpack in the rain isn’t advisable with the lack of waterproofing. That said, this is a duffel bag that could be used as a backpack so isn’t really suitable for backpacking adventures as its not designed to do so. The main straps are comfortable and fully adjustable. The base is double-thick and is very durable, but still not waterproof, so careful where you place it in wet weather. There are grab handles on each side to easily pick up and move whilst you’re on your travels. There are external zipped pockets on both ends which are handy to store smaller items that you may need in a hurry. Internally, there is a zipped pocket in the underside of the flap which is handy for documents, as well as a zipped pocket that runs the length of the bag. There are straps on the bottom of the main compartment that will compress items so they aren’t being moved around whilst in transit. There are cheaper options available, but this is a very well built bag using excellent durable materials which should last a number of years of use.

I love this bag. It came compressed inside the built in side pocket, so you can easily store it when not in use without taking up much space. It stores about the size of a frisbee. When you want to use it, you turn that pocket inside out and the full duffel bag expands. It was pretty easy to figure out the strap system, and converting the straps to the backpack is not complicated at all. I have the Medium 50L, and it is more than big enough to use as a weekender bag. I would almost thing the large would be too big. The inside has a side pocket for storing wet or smelly clothes, a second large mesh pocket, and straps for securing clothes inside the duffel. There are handles on all sides (except the bottom)so you can grab it from almost any angle and pull it out of a car or tent. The two shoulder straps can quickly be converted from a duffel handle to backpack straps, although it's not as comfortable as a full backpack and I wouldn't recommend using it for backpacking. But it works well for walking through the airport or for a short 1-2 hour day hike. The one complaint I have is that the two compression straps shown on the front in the picture are not present, at least in the 50L version. My only regret is that I didn't get it in red.

This bag is not cheap, but it is worth the price tag. Here’s why. It has everything that you can find in a bags half its price, but not made with the level of design detail and quality. The fabrics on the outside are a combination of lightweight sides and tough ends and base. The all-round tapes are stitch as grab handles, giving you a handle on every side. The pockets at each end are deep and include a boot pocket. Inside, the bag is neat and tidy. It is a large bag and capable of being loaded to very heavy.Returning to the outside, the zips are chunky and stitched in very nicely. The zippers are colour-coded in a Tiffany turquoise, with chunky cords at the ends.Every zip is two-way and in the same chunky style – no cutting corners on the smaller zips. On one side there are rucksack straps. Nothing special there, except that they are adjustable at both ends. Cheaper bags cut costs by adjusting at only one end. This makes a difference, because you can put the padded straps where you want them. This bag really is all about the details and the quality. Its original £110 was a bit steep, but it is now down to a very reasonable £71 (November 2019).

This is a great bag! My husband is going on a diving trip in a few weeks, and his travel buddy started teasing him about what bag he was going to bring. My husband had planned to bring our small rollaboard, but his friend said, "you'll probably show up with some wheeled suitcase, won't you." Off to amazon to buy him something big enough for his mask and fins, but more sporty and less stodgy. This bag easily holds as much as our rollaboard does, but in a duffel style. Each end is a separate zippered compartment, and there is an interior compartment inside the big open bag. It's waterproof and, best of all, can be used as an over-the-shoulder duffel bag OR a backpack. When it's a backpack, the large zippered compartment is against your bag, which prevents pickpocketing. Now, the backpack straps detach easily. Not while you're wearing it, but they're not the sturdiest straps. I like that they detach as it makes it easy for checking the bag, but just FYI - this isn't a bag you'll be taking on a long hiking trip.

This is a modern, durable travel bag, a superb choice for one-bag travellers who appreciate the wisdom of travelling without wheels. The main strap is excellent, meaning the bag can be comfortably used as both a backpack and a duffle bag. Comparing it with the excellent Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler—the materials are thicker and probably tougher, at the expense of increased weight. I love the large zippable interior pocket (not shown in the product shots—it’s the full width of the interior and made of lightweight fabric). The mesh pocket on the underside of the main flap is excellent too. The 50L size is probably pushing it for carry-on size for some airlines, though I’m sure it’s possible if you’re mindful of overall weight. The construction and fittings are top quality (storm flap, proper YKK zips etc)—I’d trust this for international travel. If you’re looking for a tough duffel bag that can be worn on your back, I wouldn’t hesitate.

Marmot Long Hauler bag is synonymous with quality. The hardware, stitching, and material are of the best quality, and this bag shows it. The strap has the ability to use this bag as a backpack, as well as a normal strap (comes in handy with a heavy load). There is a divided pouch to separate on the bag to keep items separated when needed, and pockets on each end to keep things close and easy access. Internally there are cargo straps to help you keep items in place when traveling. The rain flap is good and the bag protects your gear really well, but overall I do not think the bag is totally waterproof (I do not think this was intended to be a dry bag). The medium is rather large, enough to hold all my husband's hunting clothes and parkas (and he packs a lot when he goes hunting - "it does not do you any good to leave it at home").I would recommend this bag to anyone who needs a bulk storage and transport bag.

This duffel bag is well designed and well made. The quality shines through its overall look and down to some fine details. For me, this is a perfect bag for a short weekend trip to a city or a semi-rural place. It has many section and pockets for different items so you can pack and find them easily. The weights are evenly distributed and the straps are ergonomically places so it is very easy to carry, even with a lot of heavy stuff. I like the colour combo. Not my usual choice of trim in terms of colour but it works well. Now it has replaced my wheeled suitcase and the other sporty carrier bag as my default short haul holiday bag. The recommenced retail price of over £100 was a bit rich. But the advertised price of £70 is worth it I think.

This is a fantastic bag for sports or travel. It has a very spacious interior and will accommodate anything you could possibly need in your carry on and will comfortable carry everything you need for a weekend away. It can be used as a duffel bag or a backpack and is very sturdy and robust, so it ought to be able to withstand most of the bumps and drops it is likely to encounter. I think it is pretty nice looking but my son wasn't a fan of the color scheme.... My only gripe would be the price. While I don't think it's insanely overpriced, £80 seems a lot to pay for an item of "soft" luggage.

This review is for the Marmot long Hauler duffel bag. The product arrived well packaged and on time. This duffel bag is black and turquoise, would be great for both men and women. The bag is 50l, and its pretty big! It is perfect for anyone going travelling, hiking, backpacking as it would hold a lot of items. The quality is fantastic and explains the price. Not something that is like to break after the first couple weeks of your trip. It comes colder up in a small bag (see image)Great bag for the price and sure beats any other quality products.

I am currently using this bag as my sports bag as it's roomy enough for work gear as well. It's stylish, well designed and strong with very strong and sturdy zips and a good inner pocket.I'm very impressed with it. I think it's worth the RRP but it's currently discounted to just above £70 which makes it excellent value.I really like that it can used in duffle bag or rucksack mode. Excellent product.

I've used this twice already as an extra check-in bag and it has withstood rough handling. As a carry-on bag, the strap/handle makes it very cumbersome (to carry by hand or as a rucksack) especially when the bag is fully loaded. A shoulder strap would have been nice.

5.11.2017

It's a basic duffel bag of decent size. It also appears to be well-constructed and of high quality. In my opinion, one of the best features is that you can fold the bag into a built-in pouch for easy portability.

27.1.2020

Bag is strong, well made, good heavy material. Only issue is getting the shoulder straps out of the way to get into the bag, and the lack of a topside handle (holding the shoulder straps in one hand is awkward).
