At the time of writing this review, I have owned this tripod head for 3 years. I use it on my Manfrotto studio tripod with either a Canon 6D body or 1D-X body, plus any size 'L' lens up too and including the 100-400mm F4. At no time has this ball head let me down (or the kit as regards drooping forward)The finish is the usual Manfrotto quality and once the head is in the correct position required for any shot, it can be 'locked-off' by the knobbs to a very high degree of tightness. It looks expensive when compared too other tripod heads, but it is worth it in the long run. It is tempting to get a version that is a bit cheaper than this model, but put a really heavy Canon 'L'lens and camera body on it and you soon find the limits of cheaper versions. Their cheaper for a reason. This head fits perfectly on the Manfrotto studio tripod, which in itself is very sturdy (please see my other reviews) but again, you get what you pay for in the long run. I can highly recommend this ball head to anyone who wants to use heavy camera kit, or just a head that won't need to be up-graded any time soon for most use.I haven't tried this head with the Canon 500mm 'L' lens (can't afford one yet :( ) but it handles any combination up too the 100-400mm lens and 1-DX with no problems, which in themselves are my "heaviest" combination of kit, especially with a 'doubler' attachment fitted. This combination weighs nearly 11.5LBS (just over 5KG)The best solution would be to get this head AND a really good tripod at the same time, which I was fortunate enough to be able to do. Before that I was using a Manfrotto tripod and head that was mainly designed for binocular use (very high angle viewing) so going too this ball head and studio tripod was a huge step up in stability. My first Manfrotto tripod and head were totally out of their depth with heavy camera kit, but great with large bino's.If you have the choice of a good tripod or this head first, go for this head. Be aware however that ultimately, even a very good head (of any make) is only as good as the tripod it sits on. It all comes down to cost verses weight of the camera/lens combination. Some people say to get a good tripod first, but a 'weak' head of any type, will ALWAYS show itself to be so, when used with heavy kit. An ok tripod on the other hand, can cope with most camera combinations usually, UNLESS your kit is always very heavy. It's swings and roundabouts unfortunately.

I use this on a carbon fibre Gitzo tripod to hold my birding scope, and I can't imagine anything on the market being better. The main control loosens the ball clamp so everything goes floppy, instantly, which is great because I can instantly flick the scope round to any position. The little knurled knob built into the main control sets the 'degree of floppiness' that remains when the main control is loosened completely - this is useful if you like to take advantage of the ultra-fast responsiveness described above, but also want to retain a little bit of support while moving the scope. Without any of that support, a heavy scope or camera could be just a bit too floppy!(I think that's enough about going floppy.)The pan control is also useful when I want to scan the horizon for example - rather than loosening the main control and 'going floppy', I loosen the pan control and can easily swing the scope slowly around without pitching or rolling. On a solid tripod, this ball head will keep any birding scope rock steady, and I can't imagine any of the more expensive (Gitzo, Arca Swiss etc) heads being any better. I love it, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Well this is the first head I've bought for the first tripod I've bought and so far it's good good good :) The big knob to lock the head in place is easy to turn and doesn't slip (I have a 650d and the biggest lens is a 70-200mm F4) although it hasn't had the heaviest of loads yet.The head can pan around with the other smaller knob which is handy and a necessity if you want to put the camera in portrait as the head will only allow you to do that on a single axis. Once you have the camera over 90deg then you'll need to use the pan to get it pointed where you want.I got the head to go with a Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fibre 4 Section Lightweight Tripod and I also bought the 70cm unpadded tripod bag that Manfrotto have and it seems like a good combo.Only thing I forgot was the carrying strap for the tripod when it's out the bag.

Best tripod head I have ever owned. Very stable and simple and fast to adjust. Rock solid even when clamped slightly. The panning function sets it above many other ball heads. The locking function ensures you won't accidentally unlatch your camera.

This is the best and least fiddly tripod head I have ever used. I have been using a 468 for some years now and have just taken delivery of a second. I can certainly recommend this product. LD.

Brilliant. This is as solid as a fat girl stuck in a tight space. Zero give and instant lock.
