I am a big fan of Makita 18v LXT and this saw is fantastic.....I have used with two 4 Amp batteries and it runs for a good length of time and makes lots of cuts before it runs down - certainly as much cutting as you could manage with a petrol saw before needing a break. I have also run it on 2 x 6 Amp bought off here and I wore out before they did!The battery indicators are useful to keep an eye on things and the safety on / off switch is easy to use and effective.... If you make a cut and then stop the saw for more than 10 seconds it auto shuts down so you cant accidentally fire it up and chop off a limb - but its positioned such that its easy to switch back on with your thumb while you stillhave the saw in your hand ready to use - very well thought out safety feature.>It relies on the narrow chain width to prolong battery life but that is also an advantage as it cuts quickly and accurately with little or no kickback.I have been removing tree stumps by slicing them up and burning them out and this works great. Obviously if you hit the earth with the chain it dulls it very quickly and it needs resharpening - due to the chain length even this is a straightforward operation and doesn't take very long - the tool less adjuster for the chain is great and makes it very easy to set up and maintain.Buy yourself a decent chain file kit with a guide and check how to use it on Youtube - its really easy - I bought a Sthil set for the correct size of chain and can rub up the chain in 5 mins - this makes the saw really effective until you touch the ground again and blunt it in a microsecond! It comes in kit form in the box with a small can of oil - see photos of before and after assembly - easy to assemble but you will need a litre of Bio Oil pretty soon after your first set of batteries run out as it lubricates the chain really well, (without slinging muck everywhere), but does get through the chain oil.All in all a fantastic product from a fantastic manufacturer and from Terrier tools it was a fantastic price - highly recommended.Read full review...

I recently moved house and we had a wood burner installed this year so I needed to get a chainsaw.I originally looked at getting a petrol model but then looked at electric saws, which is when I came across this relatively new advance within the cordless power tool line up.I researched quite a bit until I made the decision to go for this model and took the plunge.I'm very glad I did as this tool is extremely user friendly especially for new users, and it has many safety features as well as being very efficient. The saw is very fast at 20m/sec but has relatively low torque so it's kickback potential is probably quite a bit lower than a grunty petrol version, but it still goes through wood like a hot knife through butter.I went into it like I do with my new toys, ehem, tools, and got myself a stihl sharpener which takes most of the guess work out of sharpening, as well as upgrading the bar and chain to an oregon pro am bar and 91vxl chain which is slightly more aggressive being a semi chisel cut and more of a commercial setup. It's not necessary to upgrade the bar and chain but I decided to, just so i have a spare, and it works flawlessly.I already have other Makita tools, so can use the batteries from those. One wierd thing that I noticed though is it does make a clicky, grinding kind noise which has happened with both the bars and chains if you're not cutting perfectly true. Whether that is a fault with my unit, or if it's a fault at all, I'm not sure, but it doesn't sound normal.Luckily, Makita offer an additional 2 years warranty if you register their tools on their website within 30 days of purchase, so if it does go wrong, I'll be sure to send it back and update this review.I hope this has been helpful.

Note: I didn't buy this via Amazon. In a nutshell, this saw is a beast. I have a couple of acres of woodland to maintain and usually use a chainsaw for coppicing, sawing down small trees (no more than 15" in diameter) and cutting up logs for firewood. This saw is more than up to the task - cutting through 12" oak logs didn't present any problems - I didn't feel the need for anything more powerful. A tree surgeon friend was very impressed with the power. You should wear protective clothing with this saw since it has a chain speed of 20m/sec - it's a very different beast from the usual mains powered or cheaper battery powered saws which generally have a chain speed around 12m/sec.This saw requires a pair of 18v batteries to run, providing 36v in total attached to a brushless motor. I have an older top handled Makita 36v chainsaw (duc302z) which uses a brushed motor (8m/s chain speed) and the difference between them is night and day. I love the duc302z (it's great for pruning and sawing small logs), but the duc353z is in a different league. I doubt I'll ever use a petrol saw again.Replacement chain is: Oregon 3/8" .043" (1.1mm) gauge, 52 Drive Links, Micro-Lite, narrow-kerf, Low-Kickback Chainsaw Chain (90PX052) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B013KONLXU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_k.nPybRZCAERYAnd the chain can be sharpened using the Oregon Chainsaw Sharpening Kit and Pouch - 11/64" 4.5mm https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006HTCPH4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_FfoPybWC89YTS

The Makita chainsaw is a must for anyone who want to be totally mobile, not only does it last ages on two 18V batteries but it cuts fast too! I used the 5Ah batteries and it lasted over 30 minutes on a full charge. If you are in an area where noise could render a problem, then fear not, for the Makita chainsaw is relatively quiet, much quieter than it's gas engine'd counterparts. I used mine in the front garden where next door is attached, he was in bed on nights and I had to cut some logs for that nights fire, when I saw him later I asked him as to whether he had heard me cutting logs, he said "No mate, I was dead to the world".If I had have been using a gasoline engine'd chainsaw I know it wouldn't have been long before he opened his window and asked me to stop for a couple of hours. The weight is much lighter than an engine'd one so is easier to use with arms out-stretched if needed. Balance is excellent and the chain brake works perfectly. One caution; make sure that after EVERY run you CLEAN it thoroughly! If the oil feeder hole gets blocked, your chain will be ruined. This is why I've cleaned mine after every run, it doesn't take long but does secure the chain for further operations without sharpening. If you are in the market for a quiet, powerful yet long lasting chainsaw, I cannot recommend this one enough.Read full review...

I wouldn't say it's the saw for felling old oaks but it's smooth running and surprisingly quick at cutting through 8 to 12" diameter rounds for firewood. My 4Ah batteries last reasonably but more Ah = more better and the ability to charge 2 batteries is needed if you're really processing wood. I can saw until the batteries switch off then split while they charge. It's also good for working up in branches with no pull starting at height just a button to enable the drive. The oil tank is easy to fill and doesn't leak, the chain tension is easy to adjust and it's a comfortable saw to use. The only thing I don't like is the sticker on the side looks cheap for such a nice machine,I like the moulded Makita logo that's on many of the 18V LXT tools.Overall, a quality machine that's at a good price point in the market and uses the standard 18V LXT Makita batteries very effectively.Read full review...

I have not used nor owned a chainsaw before, so I am writing as a novice user. My trees had not been pruned in 17 years and they were in dire need. I was looking for a used Stihl petrol chainsaw and then came across some YouTube videos of this chainsaw and was impressed. I already have a lot of Makita battery operated kit, so had the LXT batteries and charger. It arrived next day and I put it to use straight away. Set up was very easy, you just need to pay attention to the way the chain is installed on the bar as if you get it wrong it will not cut. Put some chain oil in and you are ready to go. It made easy work of cutting back the trees. I needed to cut two down entirely, although they were relatively small trees. Nothing phased it, it just cut cleanly throughout the day. Once finished, you take the the side off which enables you to clean out the area by the drive wheel. Very impressive kit.

I have a McCulloch 335 that has been brilliant but is coming to the end of its life looked for similar size 14" and found great reports of this Makita cordless duc353z. Since I already have this Makita LXT battery system and finding the chainsaw for a good price £120, thought I would try it.I have to say it's brilliant I've cut two conifers down and into logs so far and I can not fault it. The added bonus is no fuel mixing, no exhaust fumes, no dragging on the pull start, a press of the button and off you go. The quality is excellent as with all Makita equipment. I should say if you don't have the LXT batteries and charger already this can be and expensive alternative to replacing petrol for petrol, but if you're thinking of jumping into the Makita LXT family and need a chainsaw for your log burner this is a great place to start.Read full review...

This has all the benefits of a petrol chainsaw of this size with very few drawbacks. The principle advantage is that it is quiet in use, no need for ear defenders, no need to fill with petrol & 2 stroke oil, none of the problems with starting etc...The only downside is that you can easily get carried away and the power can be quickly drawn from the batteries. Recommended is the use of the new 5Ah batteries, as the 3Ah batteries could be excessively discharged and could therefore fail in service sooner than expected.Sawdust can quickly build up under the drive chain cover, so needs to be cleaned out after every use otherwise the oil lubrication will not service the chain.Very easy to use andslightly lighter than the petrol equivalent of its size.Overall an excellent addition to anybodys Makita tool collection.Read full review...

This is the first cordless chainsaw I have used. I tend to buy everything Makita owing to the inter-changeable batteries. A cordless chainsaw is a fantastic but odd concept. This one is really a pruning / light duty saw and if abused like a 2 stroke the set of 4ah batteries will not last more than 20 minutes and get all heated due to the quick discharge, so ensure to buy a double battery charger and have at least 4 x batteries to hand and stop for tea whilst working. In so far as the cordless concept goes it is fantastic just to be able to pick up this machine, pull the trigger, cut and stop with such ease, it almost seems like a joke but it proved to be exceedingly productive. I'm impressed,it very definitely has a place and use.

After owning a Stihl petrol chain saw for a few years and getting numerous complaints from neighbors i decided to opt for a cordless saw, although many competitors offer similar tools i opted for the twin battery Makita as i already operate on the same battery platform for half my kit. Straight from the box could tell this little saw was a quality tool and to my surprise was so easy to use when compared to its petrol counterpart, no more mixing fuel, cold start problems, loud noise or breathing exhaust fumes just put the batteries in and away you go, the power from this unit is more than ample for fire logs and tree felling for your average user i have used it on trees up to 300mm in diameterwithout a struggle

Walk 20 paces and look back to where you started - that's how far the razor sharp chain moves in one second. (so you don't have to do that maths - it works out at 72 km/h, or about 45 mph). So, be careful and wear the right kit! It might be very, very easy to use and deceptively quiet, but it packs a very powerful bite. This tool is awesome, so useable. Brillant for smaller jobs, stop-start work, work where you don't want to upset neighbours, etc. The only reason for petrol would be if you are off-grid or have a lot of work to do. Makita batteries re-charge in about 20-25 minutes, and I have a few, so I've never been waiting. If you need something like this, get it - superb Makita, as usual.

The saw has areas for improvement in its build - it's a bit fiddly and plastic for continual 'rough' work in woodlands - but once set up, it was remarkably able to cut through tough stuff without flinching. I cut 4 large baskets of 4-6 inch hardwood logs and cleared 10 fallen x 5 inch dia green trees from paths and the batteries were still going. Lightweight and relatively quiet, it is very quick and convenient to use around garden and near the house. If you have other Makita products using 18V batteries, at £120 or so it simply makes sense to have one. Be good if you were doing heavy decking work too. I'm surprised and pleased!

Having concerns over going electric... and cordless, having a 2 stroke Stihl. All I can say is out with the old and in with the new. This 36v electric cordless chainsaw out performed the Stihl and is now my go to for safety, speed and usability. Granted the batteries have a limited life but it happily chopped an old 15" diameter bay tree down and divided the logs up for drying to be burnt next year. At least 20 thick cuts and didn't run out. A second set of 5ah 18v batteries which charge in 45mins and you'll never run out of power.

I bought this saw to cut up logs and various off cuts of timber to keep our hungry log burner happy, and take the strain of my cordress circular saw on roofing jobs.Well impressed arrived the next day. Easy to set up. I had a few offcuts of softwood perlins 12x4 inch to chop up for the woodburner and it blasted through them. It also blasted through the battery's I have X5 5ah battery pack with double charger, all of which were well used that afternoon. I counted 30 cuts on one charge.Overall I recommend this tool.

Great piece of kit again from Makita, build quality good, well balanced in the hand, built in battery indicators and easy chain tensioning.Quite easily dispatched a 12” tree, into 300mm logs for the Woodburner ,above all else it’s very stealthy compared to a petrol equivalent, which means I can hack away early in the mornings, without upsetting all the neighbours.Rips through pallets in wood shed in no time.I can see this being my go to saw, look out Stihl!
