It would be difficult to ask more of a Mah Jongg set at this price. I'll break my review down feature by feature:The presentation case is both aesthetically pleasing, and sturdy, even when being transported a distance in the boot of a car, allowing no slippage of the contents. The faux-leather is of reasonable quality, the metal fastenings holding securely. The tiles themselves are sturdier than other sets I've owned, along with being thicker. These tiles do not actually require the included racks to stand freely without falling or being visible to your opponents. They are also very precisely painted, unlike my previous set, which had a few smudges and errors. These tiles are second only to the true antique bone and bamboo of yesteryear (today worth often double this price!)The tile racks are made of an extremely light wood, and so should be handled with some care (though I doubt they would actually break easily, they feel delicate). They are treated with a woodstain which makes them appear like a darker, richer wood, aside from one, which is to designate the East Wind player (the dealer), and has been left untreated. The racks are long enough to accommodate your entire hand of tiles with much room to spare, and are even long enough to be used to push your wall into place at the start of a hand. The scoring sticks are of reasonable quality, being marked in the fashion of 10's, 100's, 500's, and 1000's, leaving no room for scoring at finer precision than the nearest 10, which is perfectly acceptable under most variants of the rules, but the nit-picker in me would have preferred finer precision. They are also provided in the exact quantity for playing 2,000 point games, no more. No complaint about the actual items, and you can always obtain or make new sticks if you want to play with different scoring rules. The dice, wind indicator and wind indicator holder are of standard make (the exact same as every other set I have seen, oddly) and are therefore perfectly serviceable, though there is nothing remarkable to them.Four blank tiles are included (presumably for the unlikely event of you losing/breaking tiles), and my set came with a green sticker which I cannot for the life of me find a use for, and neither can Google. The rule book is as vague and incomprehensible as all others I have found (probably directly translated from Chinese), but this is hardly a limiting factor, as the rules are widely available online in far more understandable formats. In short, this set contains everything you need to play Mah Jongg all the way up to an advanced level (except an intelligible description of the rules) and all parts and pieces included are at the top of today's market. Short of shelling out hundreds on an antique set, you're unlikely to find a better set on the British market today.

Have recently started playing and LOVE it so much that this was the ideal Christmas present for my husband (myself) to buy me. ;P I particularly wanted one with medium sized tiles with a bit of "weight" (not cheap light, plastic type) and most importantly wanted 4 blank tiles included (the description does not say that these are included).I contacted the seller who was unable/unwilling to open the set to check the tiles, but I decided to take a chance anyway. It arrived quickly in the Netherlands (which appeals to my "instant gratification" side) and I am delighted with the choice.Tiles are 2.8cm x 2.1cmx1.85cm, each weighing 12grams, two-tone, solid plastic (has a ceramic feel). 144 pictured,4 blank. They have western numerals. The figures on the tiles are not as finely painted and are less sharp than some other tiles I have seen but are perfectly acceptable. I do find the green a bit dark and difficult to distinguish from the black bamboo markings, but don't think that is an insurmountable problem.Dragon markings have C for red, F for green and B for white - they do not say "Red, Green or White" like some sets, and again the Green is darker and very similar to black.Seasons and Flower tiles are not marked with "summer, winter etc" but are numbered.Included is a wind indicator, scoring sticks, 3 dice and four wooden tile racks (one is different colour to indicate EAst Wind)The case is black with white stitching with a chinese symbol embossed on the top (I assume it says Mahjong)The instructions are a little vague, but not using them anyway as each Mahjong group has different rules/ways of playing (we don't score)Showed it off to my Mahjong buddies who are very impressedAll in all am VERY pleased with the set and feel it is good value for money at 48UKpounds.

I'm just starting to play this game myself, and this set offers all one needs to play. The tiles are approx 28x21x13mm, so smaller than standard Chinese sizes, but still plenty big enough for easy reading (and I've reached that varifocal age now). Ideal for the kitchen or larger coffee table for those of us with modest homes, you could comfortably play a game on a 60x60 cm surface, though you'd probably want something larger to accommodate cups and nibbles too. The tile racks are about 17 3/4 tiles wide, so can be used as pushers when setting up the wall at the start of play. The case is nicely finished and has metal catches, so I don't anticipate any of the failures mentioned in other reviews. If I had to criticise something it would be the wind indicator, which appears to be much more cheaply made than the rest of the set, and only has Chinese characters. As a westerner who bought tiles with western numbers, so I could read them, it would have been nice if western letters were included on the wind indicator too. The tiles are nicely painted, with no paint splodges, and the paint itself lies within grooves or impressions in the tiles so shouldn't rub off with shuffling. The only paint splodge I found was on one of the dice, and it was easily removed by gently scraping it off with a pocket knife. The only things I am adding to this set are a wind indicator with western characters, and some wind discs so each player know which wind they are for each round. Like I said I'm a beginner, so this wouldn't bother someone with more experience. A true afectionado would probably want a higher quality set, with bamboo backed tiles, but for the casual player I think this set is more than adequate.

This set is unfortunately one of the best on the British market. I say 'unfortunately' because although it is well-made and presented with all the necessary accessories (these aren't included in many sets)it still leaves much to be desired when it comes to that most important element of the game - the appearance and feel of the tiles. Gibson used to produce a wonderful set with bamboo backs and these helped to popularise the game in the 20th century but unfortunately these are no longer available from this supplier. Two members of my mah-jong group have managed to acquire them from e-bay for between £30 - £40 pounds but they have become as rare as hen's teeth. The modern all-plastic sets that are now available up to,and in excess of, £100 are a poor substitute for the older sets made from a combination of bone/bakelite/plastic and bamboo. But having said this Gibson's is still one of the best for the price and don't be put off by the above comments. Mah-jong is one of the best games in existence - it's great fun, challenging and can be played at many levels from easy to a serious contention with Bridge.

This Mah Jong set is really wonderful. I went through a lot of trouble to get it shipped to a friend in the UK and then shipped over to Canada and it was totally worth it. The case and finishing are really lovely and everything you need to play a traditional game of MJ is there. The tiles have no chemical smell which is common in many cheap sets that you can pick up in any china town. We are used to playing with the jumbo tiles and these tiles are on the smaller side (About 30 x 20 x 14 mm or 1 x 3/4 x 1/2 inch). They are somewhere between a large set and a travel set in size. I haven't had a chance to play with the smaller tiles, but I suspect they will be much easier to sort between games. They are plenty wide enough to stand upright on their own and the included racks are of course optional. A really brilliant product.

I had seen a video review of this Mahjong set from Gibson and I had liked the fact that the tiles looked sturdy with great designs. The set is all I expected, the faux leather case has a lovely finish and it arrived in impeccable condition. The tiles are not too large but of the right size to stand them up on their side if you do not wish to use the racks provided. The inclusion of the wind indicator, dice and counting sticks completes a grand set I am already employing with family and friends for hours of great entertainment. A great set to get cracking at this incredible game. I recommend this set to anyone starting out playing Mahjong.

I was very pleased when I opened the case (although sadly the catches on the locks had broken in transit, the packaging was't up to protecting them) and found that the tiles were indeed of a very high standard. The box itself is very smart, despite the loss of catches and the racks for holding the tiles are excellent. I thought at first we had an untreated one but when I read the rule book I discovered it was so you could always identify the East wind player immediately, very useful. There are 2 'how to play' booklets, one is better than the other! I have practised setting up play before playing with others.

It's a really lovely set and it is functional and sturdy. It doesn't in itself ruin the set but one of the tile racks has not been finished. By this I mean that it has not been stained or filed and it looks faintly ridiculous. This in no way represents a criticism of the product and no doubt will become a talking point. I could find no way of communicating the problem with Amazon to see if it was possible to get a single rack replacement. It appears it would need to be returned completely and a full substitution set resent. This seems a bit pointless. I'm sure this is just a freak occurrence.

Ordered this set as it was free delivery to Spain and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of it. The tiles are a good size and the set includes everything needed to start playing Mahjong - a bonus was the inclusion of the racks which most sets do not have.At the price it is an excellent set - certainly not cheap and nasty and friends after seeing it have been most impressed and ordered one for themselves. The only criticism is that the writing/symbols on the tiles may in time fade - one of the numbers isn't very clear but it may have left the factory faulty.

Really delighted with this set. I had been concerned about the size of the playing pieces as there seems to be 'regular' size pieces and 'travel' size, I was hopeful this would be about right (having checked the measurements) but there was no real way of knowing for sure. I've got another set (this one was a gift) so I checked the pieces against mine when it arrived, they are fractionally smaller but this didn't impact in any way on play. If you're looking for a nice looking, professional, 'full size' set - this is perfect.

It is a good product, the blocks are of really good quality, seem to be quite heavy plastic or resin. The accessories are very good quality too, not to mention the box.The compartments inside are not fixed, they can be moved around, which isn't really necessary, but good to have. The block are quite nice, size-wise. They aren't too small, neither too big. Just right.Oh yeah, the pictures are really nice too. Seem to be engraved in the surface and filled with colour paint. This gives a really nice look to them.

This Mahjong set is fabulous- l am so pleased with it -the tiles are clear-white one side and green the other I bought large ones which actually turned out to be just the right size not too heavy to carry- the racks are not very good though a bit too light for the tiles to stay on - so I shall buy some new ones with a flat top - but they do seem rather costly but would be worth it- I play this game in a group of four -The set came a day early so I was delighted and pleased with the seller - many thanks indeed .

We were very happy with the product when it arrived. The tiles have a nice weight and feel and the case and presentation are good too. The only problem was a defect with one of the wooden racks which had a crack in it. However, Amazon customer service resolved the situation to our satisfaction quickly and with no quibble by delivering a replacement and arranging collection of the defective set.You could probably find cheaper sets, however we believe this to be excellent value for money.

We had looked all round China Town in Manchester for a Mah Jong set, but failed to find anything of quality which we could play. (many sets only have chinese writing)This is an excellent set. The tiles are large and easy to read. It comes with everything you need to be able to play including instructions and racks to place your tiles on. It really is a high class product and has already provided hours and hours of entertainment. Well worth the money.

I played Mahjong via the internet and really enjoyed it,so decided to get the real board game. It is completley different from the internet games. However it really makes you use your brain and you have to have 4 players to play. It arrived very well packaged but the only problem was,the intructions had pages missing, but found them on the internet and printed them off. Great to play with family and friends.
