The Maglite Xl-200 is a very versatile pocket light. It is light enough a small enough to fit into a side or back pocket and not be in the way. Yet it is still bright enough for the majority of the needs that a flashlight would fill. The beam is a cooler (more blue) white with a good hotspot. The hotspot is a little wide which had me worried that the throw would not be very good, but that was an unfounded worry. The throw is actually pretty decent, the light gives a usable amount of light in a dark area out to 200 feet. The spillover is actually rather intense, it creates a flood of light around the hotspot. The deeper design of the Maglite reflector focuses the light into a more intense pattern allowing the hotspot to be larger while maintaining the throw. The effect of this though is that the spill over is not the biggest. I actually find that this really does help in lighting the area in front of you. It tends to flood the entire area in front of you with light. The body is small and compact, it readily fits in the palm of you hand. I have always found that I like the ascetic design of Maglites more than most other flashlights, something about them just seems clean and elegant. The body is smooth in grip, easing hand strain making it very comfortable to hold for extended periods of time. The knurling on the light is a series of ridges spaced out every so often surrounding the circumference of the light. While it does provide some extra grip I get the feeling that under intense enough conditions (like running or trying to climb while holding the light) the light could slip out of my grip. This has yet to happen so I wouldn't worry about it too much. I have dropped it a few times though that was more of my fault than a failing of the flashlight. Other than a slight ding in the paint there was no damage. I don't like the fact that it uses 3 AAA instead of two batteries of a larger size. It just means that the charging schedule for the batteries is a little awkward. I get a solid run time out of it though, I tend to change the batteries once every two weeks or so from medium use while on duty.I find that the various functions are very useful and fairly easy to control. I had heard about all the issues people were having with XL-100's and was a little apprehensive. The interface system is actually fairly smooth, easy to use, and easy to understand. In example if I want to make the light dimmer I depress the switch once and hold it, then turn the light till it gets to the level I want. Some of the modes I thought I wouldn't use have actually been quite useful. In example I didn't really have a use for the night light mode, but when the power goes out it is actually quite nice. Set the light down and dims real low to save batteries but still puts out just enough light to walk around without hitting anything, need the light to see something you pick it and it goes to full brightness until you set it down and don't need that much light again. The switch itself has a nice solid feel to it and is fairly easy to find when wearing gloves due to its size and your thumb won't slip off due to the fact that it is recessed into the light slightly. For mechanics and the like, this light is light enough to hold in your mouth and keep on target no problem.Other than the amount of batteries it takes I couldn't really find to much to complain about with this light. It has a nice feel to it, with a good throw and excellent spill over. The battery life is pretty good especially considering the size of the batteries. The various functions are extremely useful. Plus it is a beautiful light in my opinion. It is light enough and versatile enough to earn its way to a spot in my every day carry equipment.

UPDATED to 5 stars, 01/27/12. After using the XL200 for a few months, I find the XL50 does not get much use any more. The brighter XL200 beam at max, and the ability to drop brightness to a very low level (for closeup reading or detail work without getting blinded) has made the XL200 now my current EDC light of choice. Not to say it won't get bumped as EDC in the future by something else from surefire, streamlight, malkoff, etc. .... but I can buy a whole bunch of XL200s and AAA batteries for the price of one of those lights and a box of CR123s .... Despite minor quirks as mentioned below, overall XL200 is a winner.A nice evolution in the XL product line, but minimal value added over the XL-50; somewhat more illumination at max setting, but the awkward controls on the XL200 make it a net negative. XL50 provides a quick and reliable means of switching between max and low light settings; XL200 requires an awkward twisting of the unit to change between hi and lo settings. And while making that adjustment, the illumination level often changes in unpredictable "jumps." The remaining settings (variable strobe rate, "rotational" on-off, and SOS mode), are truly useless for most practical applications. Night light mode is intriguing, but more a novelty than a useful function. So you have a flashlight that is somewhat more bright than the XL50 on max, with a shorter run time, and a very awkward transition between hi and lo settings.Summary:PRO: More lumens than XL50, wider range of adjustable lumen levels, and lowest setting is sometimes handy ... and much lower than the low setting of the XL50. Good to see Mag advancing the product line.CON: Shorter claimed run time than XL50, awkward and slow to turn on light and go to a low setting. Note - the complaint about switching to LOW settings assumes that most users will want MAX ("tactical") lumen level as the default setting when the light is first turned on.If the multi-click interface offered some programmable levels associated with various number of clicks (like XL50), the light would be more useful.NOTE: I have not verified claimed run time. In testing the XL50, with fresh alkalines, the unit ran for just over 2 hours on "high" before going into a flashing mode. A bit less than the 8 hours, 45 minutes claimed on the package. Will be interesting to see how the XL200 tests versus the claimed run time of just over 2 hours.

for some bizarre reason, i like flashlights. I have a couple dozen floating around. I love the LED ones, bright, reliable, long lasting. But they arent' as reliable as my old maglites. Even the Nebo Red Ring(s) I have have failed a couple times. I have 2 Streamlight Scorpions which are terrific but don't have strobe, and the batteries, when they fail, fail quickly. As for the Nego....Had to return one, just stopped working. My current one just doesn't work 100% of the time. Not comforting, say, if there's a home intruder and I'm holding this next to my handgun....So when I was preparing for a european trip and really needed a reliable light I looked for an LED maglite.I bought the Pro which is similar to the classic mini maglites, and is terrific, but I like the strobe function so I bought the Xl200. Here's why I use these. My fiancee and I walk several miles a few times a week, often at night, sometimes in the winter when we are really bundled up and not especially visible, and the bike path/shoulder is filled with snow. We walk facing traffic with a red flasher, but I also hold a strobe LED flashlight. When a car comes into view, I turn on the strobe and jiggle the light. Works well. Usually gets the driver's attention and they slow down. Occasionally we'll get an A...hole who comes flying around at 60, or someone who is veering into the bike lane, and I'll flash the strobe right at 'em. That works. It's gotten me the finger a few times but has also saved my life at least once a week. But the light I have requires that I cycle back through every time to get to the strobe function. It's a nightbeam 900 and it is amazing. But there's still that nagging doubt that it may not be up to the most reliable construction and it is clumsy and redundant to get to the strobe.Tonite we gave the XL200 its test run and it is terrific. It is also very easy to get to the strobe - just 2 quick clicks from the off position. Works great. Then I can easily click back to the regular beam and adjust it by rolling my wrist instead of clicking. Very convenient and intuitive.don't know how long the battery will last under those circumstances. We'll find out. These aaa led flashes tend to have great lifeOnly negative? No where to put a lanyard. Worried I'll drop it.That's it.

This is a great product. I originally purchased this because i have had many Mag-lite products in the past and they have always have been superior to any other flashlights i have ever encountered. This flashlight is no exception to the reputation that i have come accustomed to in the Mag-lite brand. Now i will break down the reasons this is a superior product. First, it comes with batteries. Next, the 5 modes were a selling point with me i was originally intrigued about and pushed me to make the purchase. finally, the light is rated at 172 lumens. For those of you who are not familiar with the lumen term it is a scientific term measuring light and it deals with wavelength and brightness todull it down to its basics (15 lumens = roughly 200 watts of your conventional incandescent light bulb). This is a very bright.Ok, now i will get into the things that surprised me and deserved my 5 stars.I had no idea what the night light was, basically it dims the light to its lowest level until you touch the light then it reverts to the power you set. Wait what is this "power you set business?" when you turn the light on and hold the the power button before you release you can adjust the brightness by rotating the light in your hand, in strobe mode this adjusts the speed of the strobe but the brightness is set by what you had previously set the normal flashlight mode. finally there is a lockout mode, hold the power button point the light upward than rotate downward and release and the power button is locked out (will not go dead in the backpack) and do the same thing to unlock.bottom line great deal at the price, then when you consider the functionality of the on/off features this flashlight is the bottom line best out there. great for camping, hunting, the car, or an everyday flashlight cant be beat best quality and features i never knew existed. and water resistant.got one for myself just bought 3 more for Christmas gifts. First review ever here on my end, 25yo. construction engineer by trade.

I have owned many maglites over the years, from the small pocket ones, to the large tactical style lights. They have all been incredibly durable and performed very well. I have replaced the bulbs occasionally because after time the halogen ones would dim, the light would become very yellow, and they would be more or less useless even with full charge batteries. And after losing my small halogen maglite that I use for hunting I decided to try one of the new XL led lights. All I can say is WOW! This is easily the best and brightest flashlight I have ever owned. My primary use was for a hunting light - walking to and from my stand or blood trailing. For night-time blood trailing this light is AMAZING.It is effectively a small spotlight and really makes blood "pop". Small, lightweight, and easy on/off. The strobe feature and dim feature can be hit or miss to activate it seems like, but I do not use those that often. The only thing I wish it came with was maybe a clip? I see they now sell a model with one but it was not available at the time of purchase. The construction is typical maglite quality - very durable and sturdy, no loose parts. Does not feel cheap. I have had the same set of 3 AAA batteries last 2 years before having to replace.Any I was so impressed with the performance of this flashlight that I bought another to keep in the house. We had the power go out a few weeks go and I turned the flashlight on, aimed it at the ceiling, and it pretty much lit up the whole room! It kept us out of the dark for a few hours until power was restored. This year I bought one for my FIL for xmas (shhh don't tell) because as we were blood trailing a nice buck he kept commenting how nice my flashlight was compared to his old bulky baton maglite that wasn't even half as bright! We found the buck (partly thanks to this flashlight) but point taken and now he's getting a nice stocking stuffer.Do yourself a favor and buy one! You wont regret it!

First thing that needs to be said. BUY THIS LIGHT!Now that we have that out of the way, the details. If you actually read the instructions, everything is perfectly clear. I have owned many maglites over the years, mainly because life on the farm gets a little rough and you need a strong light. This light feels like it is going to live up to the standards set by its previous kin.The only "weak" part i can see would be the lens assembly. The rest of the barrel feels thick and solid, but the cap is so light weight that it might be a little thin for big impacts. (so in other words, ill have to find my actual hammer instead of just using my old maglite as a stand in.) I love the five modes, its like my 2AA minimag, but more functional. The main reason i got this light is because you can adjust the settings by physically rotating the light. Brightness, strobe speed, and flash signaling. My old minimag had a "flash" setting that was too slow to be usable, but now with the adjustable strobe, i got my desired effect. SOS feature is nice, dont know when ill need it, but that's the point of having it. The signalling mode is like clicking the old maglites button partway down, but instead on this one, you rotate the whole light. completely silent. great for tactical. Another feature I like is "lockout", you hold the light straight up, hold the button, rotate it to the floor, and release. now it is locked off, the button wont work so it wont come on in your pocket or toolbag and drain the battery. The main part, where it counts, brightness. This is brighter than my 2D cell maglite with led conversion kit (wayyyy brighter than the old standard bulbs) Almost hurts to look at. Fixed focus so you cant adjust the beam, but it is precision balanced and is very good. All in all, I will be getting another one to add to my tactical shotgun because of its sleek case and bright light.

I usually like to wait for a while before reviewing unless I feel its necessary to get the word out about problems with a product. I'll make an exception here 'cause gosh gee its kinda neat, with a few minor exceptions.First, there were no instructions and the average viewer would say a flashlight is pretty simple we don't need no stinking instructions. However instead of a switch we have a mouse that does quite a lot including getting stuck on dim every time one turns the light on after having it on dim. Ya, I was fiddlin' with it. Ok, hold down the mouse and rotate the light until it goes to bright and then release. You Tube Video Or the other option is to unscrew the batteries and reinstall to get it to default on bright.Second, there is no real spot, its a pretty much a flood and it does a superb job. The adjustment actually makes no improvement, worthless actually. I found I could light up my Cottonwood trees dimly to 100 yards or so and if that was a spot I might not be enthused, however the beam covers such a wide area there's no complaint. The beam is so much better than my 3D original yellow beam Maglite and yes with new batteries I tried them side by side. If I need more I'll bring out the Thor light but I don't foresee that being needed.Third, the mouse "safety off" which prevents you from accidentally turning on the light in your pocket, requires some new moves. To one hand it, one must thumb the mouse, swing it vertically overhead, press, then rotate it straight down and release the mouse. The same to reactivate it, however it sometimes takes a few tries. One might practice this out of sight of their mother-in-law as it might confirm what she always believed.Fourth, the lens is plastic as others have mentioned. Its a keeper.

I've recently purchased the Maglite XL200. I own several other quality LED flashlights and find this to be a very nice design in comparison. The controls are particularly user friendly and even intuitive for me to use. I find the rotate to dim feature to be particularly innovative. My favorite every day carry (EDC) flashlight is a, 4Sevens Quark 123 Tactical. It's much smaller, brighter, etc. However it's controls are not nearly as user friendly and are not printed anywhere on the device as they are printed on the Maglite XL200.My one and only complaint related to the Maglite XL200 is that the tailswitch is not "Momentary On" capable. The user must fully depress the tailswitch and the light will illuminate and remain on.If a user were to try to quickly illuminate the light and extinguish it with a double click, it would be interpreted as a double click and enable the strobe feature rather than a quick on then off. The user must pause briefly between the two clicks to effectively produce a momentary on, then off.My 4Sevens Quark 123 Tactical, has this feature. Perhaps that's where the term "Tactical" comes into play.As others have reported the "Spot to Flood" focus is not without complaint. This is an accurate concern. Should a user rotate the Head to bring the focus from a Spot to a Flood, the Head is now loosened to a degree that the sealing O-ring has little sealing capability and the Head feels loose enough that it might work it's way off if not fully re-screwed into place. It is however not a concern of mine and I'll not down rate the light as a result. All in all a great little light. Additionally, AAA batteries are much less expensive and are more readily available than the CR123A for my EDC.

I broke my bulb and was out of batteries for my Surefire G2, I decided to try something else. Since I've carried that surefire and a maglite 4 cell on duty the last 7 years, I'll be comparing it to those.Brightness. Brighter than the surefire and the 4 cell. Which surprised the hell out of me considering it only uses 3AAA batteries. If you need anything brighter, get something from surefire that runs on 3 Lithium 123 batteries, and prepare for the hit on the wallet.Beam. Not really adjustable, but neither is the surefire. But the pattern was far better, no real dead spots, and I was easily able to see 200 yards. Perfect for what I need it for.Battery.I've been on night shift this last week and haven't had to change the batteries yet. Some people are complaining that 2 1/2 hours on its highest setting isn't good enough. The surefire's batteries lasted 60-90min, and cost $10 to change. 2 1/2 hours is GREAT for a AAA flashlight that is this bright. Spend an extra couple dollars and bring some spare AAAs with you. Or turn the brightness down a notch or two and the batteries will last a hell of a long time.Features. I don't think I will ever use most of em. Lockout is nice. Adjustable brightness is awesome, however my only knock on the product is that it seems to go into adjustment too quickly. On my surefire I would hold the button to turn it on, so I noticed on this light as I was pulling it out of the holster, I was holding the button down out of habit and accidentally dimming the light. It will take me awhile to get used to that.Holster. One thing that worried me buying this product was finding a holster for it that fit my duty belt. To my surprise, it fit my surefire holster PERFECTLY!!!

I purchased this flashlight a few days ago to carry with my leatherman in a custom made leathercase and wanted something that would hopefully last. I opted for the XL200 not for the extra functionswhich are mainly just gimmicks I will never use but for the extra light output. To those commenting about buying the cheaper XL50 to get better battery life I would remind them that these flashlights have adjustable intensity so if you want more life simply dial (rotate in this case.)it down. For me, Iwant all the brightness I can get when I need it and that is why I only looked at flashlights with variable output. Like most Maglites it is well made and this one is simple to run for the main function. The extra functions are a little harder to use when you start entering three clicks or four or five clicks.I gave this Flashlight a four star because contrary to what the ad says and several reviewers have said, this flashlight will NOT go from Spot to Flood. I did a test in darkened basement and marked the width of the Spot and halo with lens screwed full in. I then rotated the lens outward and the halo remained the same width with only change being the spot slowly becoming dimmer until it disappeared. That is not a Spot to Flood Focus folks. I have another brand of led flashlight that does have it and when I rotate away from Spot the halo area gets wider and brighter. This was a big disappointment since having a true flood is really nice if you are using the light say for camping andyou want to light the whole room. You also have to be careful how far you screw it out or you will disable the o-ring seal.

172 Lumens using easy to find AAA batteries. Lots of lighting options using the click button. Made of durable aluminum. American made using very durable components including the battery cage, MAG-LITE got this one right. I purchased a 2 AA accessory pack to use the additional lenses in conjunction with the rubber lense device. What a bargain when looking at the Lumens/$$$ ratio. Highly recommend this light for scaring away curious 'squatches. :o>UPDATE 9/2/12:After having this light since February and enjoying the enormous light it puts out, as of July it has been killing the batteries to the tune of one set per week. Granted they are Duracell AAA (3)and I use this light for a total of 10 minutes or less per MONTH...I personally feel that the batteries should last at least 60 days. After changing out the batteries 5 times using fresh Duracell's, I've lost all confidence in this model (XL200). I also own the XL50 and have only changed the batteries once in the last 6 months and I use this model a whole lot more. I guess I will replace the XL200 with another XL50.UPDATE 9/20/12:Just for giggles & grins I contacted Mag-Lite, they were very professional and asked that I ship the defective flashlight back to them. 1 week later I received it back with a note that the control switch was deemed defective and was replaced. It's now 11/17 and I've still got the same set of batteries in it and it functions just fine. Mag-Lite's customer service has proven to make the difference between 1 star and 5 stars. I will continue to purchase Mag-Lite products.

I've owned several Maglites over the years and several recent LED lights from other makes (typically $30 or less). The XL200 is almost a light I love. The functionality is great. I really like the user interface and the way it remembers the preset brightness. I've got several lights with variable brightness but this and the Thrunite Ti2 are the only ones that will let you select low brightness without selecting high first. The nightlight feature is also great and one of the reasons why I wanted this vs the XL50.However, not all is perfect. First, I would rather they have used a knurling on the side similar to the AA and D cell Maglights. It's not a huge thing but I think it would look better and make the light look a bit less like a big version of the Solitaire.More significantly I don't feel like this light will be as durable as the old school AA and D cell Mags. I dropped mine perhaps two feet when I first got it. The aluminum around the lens now has a dent where the round shape has been flattened out. Not a huge deal and the light still works but In perhaps two decades of use my original mini-Mag has suffered little more than scratched paint. I understand that a small dent doesn't mean the light won't last a long time. It's just that the light doesn't feel like it's built as well as the older lights. It's probably going to last a lifetime just like the older Mags but it won't feel as god in the process.Still, if you aren't the sort who is going to abuse every light you own this one may work really well.

I love my Maglites and have been a die hard fan since i can remember. love the size of the flashlight, its features and especially its brighness. I have owned most maglite series including the XL50 and 100.I am dissapointed however that the one i received a couple of days ago does not work all that well. it only turns on once i remove the batteries for 5 mins and put them back in. after that it works fine, the adjustment, strobe, sos, lock and unlock all work. its only when the flashlight is left off for more than 10 minutes it stops working (even tried to unlock it; and yes i do know how to unlock it), it will only go back on once i do the battery removal procedure again.maybe its a one of defective item; however like all othe maglites I have owned, they are bloody fantastic!I sent an email to amazon to find out what to do next in this regards. ill keep you postedUpdate:I had contacted Amazon on this issue and WOW, they gave me 2 options; a refund or them sending me out a new one without worrying about the return of the defective unit as shipping back from Australia whould have costed a Ton!I opted for a replacement. the delivery estimate was 10 April however i got the flashlight 29 March. Yep! almost 2 weeks earlier than expected. Amazon did take my packaging feed back on board and the package was buble wrapped and seemed much more protected.Well Done amazon :)as for the flashlight, its a great addition to my maglite collection it works exactly as described. great little pocket rocket.

The difference between the Maglite XL200 LED 3-Cell AAA Flashlight and the comparable imported competitors is like night and day: There is a substance and feel to the Maglite that is distinctly lacking in the imports, and I've been through many of these in the last several years. I fully expect the XL200 to last for a decade or more, and after that I probably won't be needing flashlights of any kind.At first, I was rather cool to the multiple modes of operation, but I have grown to depend upon the "Nite Lite" mode (three quick clicks) when I am walking the dog around the yard in the middle of the night: If the lamp is held still, the light dims slowly which is perfect when I'm waiting for the dog to decide what and where her business will be be; when she is through, a flick of the wrist brings the light to full output and I can easily navigate the treacheries of the suburban backyard and get back to the backdoor where the pup is waiting for me...I heartily recommend this flashlight, despite that fact that it costs as much as several of the imports, because, unlike the imports, the Maglite will not fail just when you need it, and that is what a flashlight should be...I also like the fact that it is manufactured in the United States, because, although I am retired now, I have always made my living with my hands - and more than a little bit of brains - as a theatrical stagehand. Stagehands spend their working lives in the dark and know the importance of a good reliable flashlight

This flashlight forms one of the cleanest and most thorough circles of light I've seen. Most flashlights form a circle in which the center is more illuminated than the periphery, but that is not the case here. You get a very consistent circle of light. In the absence of any other source of light, this tiny instrument is nothing short of a floodlight. Its body is well-built, of some kind of metal, Aluminium, I think. It takes in three AAA size batteries from its rear. Batteries go into three parallel slots in a cylindrical cartridge, sort of how bullets go into a revolver. And the light comes out of a tiny LED at the front, of course. The light can be switched on in five different ways by pressing a small and soft rubbery button at the rear-end.So, what's bad about this light? Not much really to think. But a little bit of better designing could have made it a better product than it already is. Sweaty palms may find holding this instrument a little difficult, although there are small grooves to provide the needed grip. A nice sturdy rubber grip would've been a better option, however. The instrument also gives you four more ways to light-emission that you can play around with, although most would find it useless. Overall, a good product. Slightly expensive for its goods, but really, you won't regret it.
