Mafia II is a stunningly cinematic game that draws upon a whole range of famous gangster movies to create its world of Mafia dons, hitmen and wiseguys. Its graphics are amazing and the third person gameplay well balanced and varied. If it has one flaw it is only that it is all over too soon.Mafia II follows the rise to power of a Mafia henchman Vito Scalletta as he struggles to survive in 1950's America. The game depicts different events in Vito's life, occasionally jumping several years at a time, and while the story is fairly linear it sucks you in and makes you believe you are a part of it. As the years go by you see the changing face of the fictional Empire Bay where the game is set and the historical detail is truely remarkable. The buildings, clothing and music all change throughout the game really making it convincingly authentic. The action of the game includes a lot of variety from gun fights to punch ups to car chases and other general gangster activities. In the gun fights you have a third person view and a cover and shoot approach that is both tactical and looks great. There are a lot of traditional gangster guns you get to use like the Thompson and the BAR and the environments are destructable so you can cause mayhem with automatic weapons fire. The cars are also well modelled and if you are into 1950's cars there are a vast array to choose from or collect.Vito generally has his own apartment and car and can earn money that can be used to buy clothing and weapons in the local shops. This sort of activity is fairly limited but it was nice to be included, making the city feel more alive. A lot of the game has parrallels to Grand Theft Auto but there are a lot less options. Instead Mafia II focuses on the story and the set piece action scenes that are straight out of movies like The Godfather and Goodfellas. The voice acting is first class and there is a lot of humour in the dialogue. As the story unfolds you will find yourself enjoying every minute of it and wanting to find out what happens next. By the end you will be talking just like the Sopranos and eager to whack the next wiseguy who crosses you.Unfortunately the game does end far too soon. There is only between 6 and 8 hours of gameplay in the campaign, and no multiplayer option. An add on which was included called The Betrayal of Jimmy allows you to play a different character in a number of individual missions against the clock, but it lacks the story of the main game and is no where near as involving.Despite its length I would highly reccomend this game to anyone, especially if you are a fan of the whole gangster genre. From the very first steps you take in Empire Bay you will be amazed at how good this game looks and how well written it is. Wise up and get yourself a copy !

I personally thought this game was fantastic and could be the best game i have played this year. Your character, Vito, is an immigrant who travelled with his family to America to begin a better life. Years later after servicing in the military as punishment for a few small offences he begins to get involved with the local mafia families, along with his friend Joe, with the intent of eventually becoming part of the family. The storyline is fantastic, the characters are believable, the voices are very good, the background music makes for some good listening and the map and scenery make for a pleasant environment to walk/drive around in.The gameplay itself is very fun as well. The mixture of hand to hand and shoot-outs makes for a varied gaming experience. Driving around the city is great fun and seems reasonably realistic. Also there is a good selections of cars to use. One thing i must say though is that when you have money don't save spend it while you have the chance, particularly on cars, as you lose it all a couple of times during the game but you don't lose what you have bought with the money. However before you buy this game there are a few things, that although i didn't mind, may put other people off.First a good percentage of the game, or at least more so than other games, is cut scenes which are vital to the storyline and are great to watch. Therefore if cutscenes annoy you then i would definitely think twice about this game. Also it does take quite a while to get anywhere in the game and if you don't want to attract the cops you have to obey the rules of the road, e.g. traffic lights, and before you say i want to be chased by them it will be fun, most missions you can't start with them chasing you and sometimes it can take a while to get rid of them as they are generally quicker than you.I would also say that the game itself is quite short however i would not hold me to this as i did generally loss track of time while playing it so it will have probably lasted a bit longer if i would have staggered my gameplay a bit. It also has no real replay value and you probably wouldn't want to play through it again as you already know the storyline and it wouldn't be as fun.If you do not mind any of the above then i would definitely buy this game, however if you are unsure i would wait for it to come down in price a bit.

I just completed Mafia 2 and all I can say is wow, the graphics amazing, the story amazing and the game itself is amazing. The game starts as Vito Scalleta is telling the story of how he came to America with his family his father was mysteriously killed and now Vito is living with his mother and sister. One night Vito and his best friend Joe (childhood bully who became his friend) are robbing a jewellery store only to be stopped by a cop on patrol Vito is sent to prison but is later placed in the army as they need someone who speaks Sicilian to help in clearing out enemy troops in Sicily. The game fast forwards and you are fighting in Sicily here you learn the basic controls and what its like to be playing and I'm telling you it doesn't disappoint, you are then wounded and sent back home the rest is up to you unfortunately the game although it is free roam doesn't feel like it is very story driven the only free roam I found enjoyable was the betrayal of jimmy which gives you a lot more freedom. Soon after working with various mobsters and gangsters you soon become part of the family and within time you begin to enjoy it you're rolling in the cash buying the best clothes dining at the best restaurants and stealing the best cars and exporting them for good cash. The story as I said is fantastic its just wow from start to finish there's lots and lots of twists and one huge one at the end leaving you speechless. the graphics are amazing and so are the cut scenes which have been beautifully created, this game is different and that's what makes it fun you never know what to expect and every mission is different weather your trying to sneak into a government building trying to turn off the alarm as you try not to alert the guards or having a hardcore gunfight in the street with the police everything is just amazing and it really is an enjoyable experience. In my opinion this is a definite buy with rewarding outcomes!

I think once you get past the fact that this is not an open world GTA-style behemoth and just a single story game (like Uncharted...) then there is a lot to like here. The story is pretty much a Mafia-by-numbers affair with Joe and Vito as the Butch and Sundance of Empire Bay getting into all kinds of scrapes with various families as well as the "Chinks" and the "Micks", boozing and schmoozing along the way. PC this one ain't.Graphically it is a very pretty game. We first arrive in Empire Bay in a snowy 40s winter but after the inevitable few years in "the can" our boys are in a sunnier 50s city with louder music and in Joe's case a louder shirt. I was hoping for another time shift maybe to the 60s but sadly this wasn't to happen. The city is beautifully realised and cruising around the large expanse is very enjoyable - just as well as you have to do a lot of it. The (cover) gunplay definitely is up to scratch with no limits on the guns you can carry and there are some excellent set pieces such as the hit on the hotel and the gunfight at the observatory. Love that Thompson "Tommy" gun :o)The obvious downside is the city that promised so much could not deliver it all. Aside from the main story there are no side missions and little to do apart from steal a car or buy/rob a new suit if you really feel the need. There is little incentive to earn money - particularly AS it all gets taken away twice during play. The driving between missions could also be seen as padding but if you're a fan of the cars and imagery of the era it won't be too much of a chore. Some say this game is too short but for me it was about right and it didn't overstay it's welcome and overall I really enjoyed it. There are two DLC missions if you really want more. The excellent voice acting and story helped to keep my interest and you get to perv at real Playboy pics too - what's not to like LOL ?

The main story is great but as others have mentioned before unlike other free roam games there aren't any side missions available in between missions which makes the free roam nature between missions a bit pointless. However, the story is great and after adapting to Joe's adventures I am thoroughly enjoying that too. The main floor with this game is the lack of ability to save the game where you want to (while on a mission). The load from last checkpoint option is better than having nothing, but in the Joe's adventure missions this basically means starting from the beginning of the mission.Another point of contention I have with Joe's adventures is the whole bonus points concept which makesit a bit like saints row or burnout and getting a missions score just seems a bit pointless as you aren't given a rank overall throughout playing the game.I would have given the game 5/5 if Joe's adventures had been as original and entertaining as the main story without the silly timed missions and with its lack of updated checkpoints and if you could save more often as a whole in the game to avoid repetition of parts which you have easily got through before. But as it stands Mafia 2 is a brilliant game worth anyone's money and time. I will review Jimmy's dlc later when I have played them both. I hope there is a Mafia 3 in development as the game was very well written.

I have to say that a really enjoyed this game and had wished i came accross it earlier. It has a very fun storyline that will keep you wanting more which in my case, makes a great game if it can do that.People say the story was too short. They're right & wrong. The story does feel to finnish a little early and with a disapointing end too but in terms of playing time, Just increase the difficulty, hard is not actually that hard, except the final mission which was still not really hard. The only downside is the emptyness of the game once the story is done. These no side missions neither is they're free-roam. If you want to free roam, you'll have to select a mission to replay and go from there as well as getting those pesky trophies that you might want to clean up on to increase the game value.Would i recommend it? Yes! I really enjoyed it but dont be suprised on a few let downs. Is it better than GTA (Many people ask & wonder)? No. It has a great story and feel to it but GTA is more interactive and drains every drop of juice from its oranges and has it own unique feel, ways and touch to games when it cames to it.

Mafia 2 is not one of the best games you will ever play, however i am a big fan of gangster themes and story lines such as Goodfellas and Boardwalk Empire therefore i found myself enjoying this game a lot purely based on the story and settings of this game. It is set in the 1940s which carries on to the 1950s as you play through the game,it also has some classic soundtracks from the early 1940s which sets the scene and gives you a feel of what year you are in, you will also find some cool cars in this game which you can personalise to your liking. The graphics are not too bad. The game play is pretty easy to pick up,you find cover you see the enemy you shoot the enemy pretty simple and thedriving is just as easy.Mafia 2 is an action packed game which is very enjoyable however do not be fooled it is not an open world game, it is a mission based game.If you are a fan of gangster themes and story lines i am pretty sure you will like this game but make note this is not a very long game to complete. My personal rating of this game is 8/10

I loved this game. I never did have the first mafia but I wanted an open world game similar to GTA. This is better than any GTA I've ever played. The graphics are amazing, the missions thrilling and the time setting seems accurate. I have to say it is a bit short in terms of the storyline but I found several hours to be a sufficent amount. There is open world but you are limited to freedom only at certain times. This game does pass through a decade showing how changes in America came quickly. Not to spoil the story but the missions are everywhere from the army, prison to the outside world in the 1940's and 1950's. Another great part of the missions is everything is diffrent you really can't even imagen what is next.Love it best game on ps3, first game I completed on ps3 because I was hooked and by far the very best game on the market to date. I recommend this game to anyone a fan of GTA especially.

From graphics to gameplay Mafia 2 is excellent and very addictive. The storyline keeps you on your toes and isn't repetitive unlike some similar games. Landscape, cars, and music are great and the different areas you explore are all really well done. The AI of the enemy is ok, sometimes abit easy but then you do seem to find that the cover and firing can be a little slow at times but thats being fairly harsh. I really think this is a must buy for all Mafia fans. Only area that it could have better is you dont get to use the city enough outside the story mode. It looks amazing and would have been brilliant to be able to do some other sub missions away from the career mode.Still a must buy inmy book.

I have to say I really enjoyed every second of this game. It is exactly what you expect from a gangster style game and is a more mature game than what other games like grand theft auto offer which was great. The shooting and ducking mechanics work very well and the graphics are fantastic. The whole atmosphere is perfectly set with the 40's and 50's musical theme and you have to love empire bays detail. I hope more dlc will be on the way as I hope to return to empire bay!!!But you wonder could they have included more of this dlc to offer a more full game experience?!?!? I have a sneaky suspicion this is why there is so little to do after completing the story mission.

I'd read a few reviews, but as usual tried to keep open minded. The demo helped in swaying towards buying the game in the first place, but the whole package is so much more. From the music, the driving, the voice acting and the storyline itself, its pure poetry. I loved it and couldn't stop playing which for me is unusual. The last game that got me this engrossed was GTA4 which is why I though I'd put down these thoughts. Another anomaly. It not only stays true to the original, but in my opinion improves in quite a few areas. Buy it. You won't be sorry.

27.9.2010

Mafia 2 has a great story line that keeps you glued to the screen all the way. Game play wise it is quite linear, despite their being a massive city with lots going on you are kind of shepherded from one mission to the next and so don't really get a proper chance to explore like you can in other games like GTA.If you are a fan of Mafia/Gangster movies like Goodfellas then this is a must buy, the game has a great story and it is fun to spot which movies the developers have taken inspiration from!

31.8.2010

I coudn't stop playing! This is a story based game, not only mindless shooting, if you like this kind of games you will love it!Very artistic visuals, amazing soundtrack, real characters with very expressive faces (we rarely see so real expressions in videogames), immersion, superb representation of the 40s and 50s,atmospheric cutscenes, what else I can say? Buy this game and play it! I wish to be longer because I didn't want to finish! It took me 13,5 hours to complete it.

3.9.2010

I want to keep this review short and sweet. This review is much like every other review for this game. From the off you are hooked with the brilliant story, gameplay and graphics. Its a great game but it ended way too promptly. There could have been a few more hours of gameplay but it has got a replay factor. Due to the prompt ending there is definately room for a mafia 3 which i will be patiently waiting for

25.6.2011

while mafia 2 lacks in open world gameplay such as other games like GTA, the beauty of mafia 2 lies within its storyline which truly makes up for its other lack of areas. the storyline is gripping and truly immense. whilst others have criticized it for being to short, i would recommend this game to anyone, and would say most would get enjoyment from it. great gameplay and an immense story line.
