I’ve never tasted a Vermouth before so this was uncharted territory for me. I’m a red wine drinker and I read the background to Vermouth on the web – very interesting. I see it can be used many different ways but I decided just to try a glass or two one evening. Good move! It’s delicious and a nice drink to sip as you read or watch TV. I quite like the idea of it being an aperitif and I can actually think of many uses for it. I’ll certainly try it again and I’m amazed I’ve never thought of it before. The background is interesting (courtesy of Wikipedia):“Vermouth is an aromatized, fortified wine flavoured with various botanicals (roots, barks, flowers, seeds, herbs, and spices). The modern versions of the beverage were first produced in the mid to late 18th century in Turin, Italy. While Vermouth was traditionally used for medicinal purposes, its true claim to fame is as an aperitif, with fashionable cafes in Turin serving it to guests around the clock. However, in the late 19th century it became popular with bartenders as a key ingredient in many classic cocktails that have survived to date such as the Martini, the Manhattan, the Rob Roy, and the Negroni. In addition to being consumed as an aperitif or cocktail ingredient, vermouth is sometimes used as an alternative white wine in cooking.”

I have not been a big vermouth drinker in the past and, frankly, before trying this, thought that there were only two "real" vermouth producing countries; Italy and France. Also, where I grew up, it was more a drink - with sherry and cognac- for my grand parents' generation although the advertisers certainly did their best to liven up the brands with enchanting and sexy ads - over here, some might recall J Collins as an accident prone sun lounge lizard and her partner who had pretentions of sophistication he rather lacked). However, in 2012-13, or at least that's when I noticed, it seemed to have a resurgence in many London bars. Not only the white one, but also the red varieties. This particular style is sweet, but delicious and warm and complex at the same time. It drinks well on ice and with orange, lime or lemon peel - depending on preference. The alcohol percentage is 15 so about the same as a good strong wine. Not surprising as vermouth is fortified wine with the addition of spices and herbs.Excellent as an aperitif or digestif - or for lounging in the sun.Sweet but with a cool freshness that recalls summer and happy days4.5 stars and recommended although the price seems a bit high around the £18-20 mark

I'm not much a Vermouth drinker to be totally honest. This is largely because I'm not much of a sweet wine drinker anyway. However I do appreciate it as an ingredient in cookery so will approach my review from both the perspective of using it as a drink and as an ingredient.First off as a drink, this is quite a pleasant Vermouth, the herbals and botanicals are not overpowering and do provide a pleasant bitterness to contrast with the sweetness of the sherry base. It is pleasant mixed with soda or lemonade as a longer drink over ice and is also pleasant neat over ice. I would certainly drink this long with soda as a summer refresher. As a cooking ingredient I used it in place of madeira in a game ragu. Here as well as giving that sweetness to the sauce that I get from the madeira, there is also the pleasing herbal overtone that blends exceedingly well with the meat flavours. I had browned the meats first and used the Vermouth to deglaze the pan before adding the wine and stock. It is certainly something I will be adding as an ingredient again in the very near future.Overall, this is something I would certainly have in the kitchen again, both to cook with and as a tipple to enjoy from time to time.

Vermouth gets its name from wermut, the German word for wormwood, it is an aromatized wine with herbs, spices, and other botanicals, fortified with distilled alcohol to keep it from spoiling as quickly. Traditionally, vermouth is classified as sweet which is usually red; or dry- usually white.Because vermouth is a fortified wine prone to oxidation, it should be kept in a refrigerator to keep it from spoiling.Vermouth may not be the 'hot' drink of the decade, but it is a very refreshing drink. This Emilio Lustau Red is a very nice example made in Jerez, it is sweet but not too sweet and mixed over ice with a twist of orange peel to bring out the flavours it makes pleasant cocktail. You could even try chilled grapes instead of ice? I fancy I can taste a hint of angostura bitters as the botanicals fuse into the cocktail, a most enjoyable libation. It can also be enjoyed served alone. It is 15% proof.JC

A great new contender for the rapidly expanding vermouth market. A lovely red vermouth based on two sherrys selected by Lustau's enologist Manuel Lozano. One is a rich, complex and lustrous Pedro Ximénez and the other a clinical, dry and nutty Amontillado – separately aged for 10 years and then infused/macerated with over ten botanicals and herbs like sage, coriander, citrus peel, violets, absinthe root and mixed to produce an outstanding red vermouth. It's got a lovely complex bouquet with high notes of citrus and coriander with some bitter low notes from the absinthe and violets. The sweet taste dominates the first moments after you sip, smooth grape and oak with bitter notes of burned sugar and wood.Very very smooth finish and utterly lovely. Goes very well with cheese and heavy desserts. Recommended.

This fortified red wine - essentially sherry with added herbs and botanicals - comes in a classy-looking bottle with a vintage-style label. When poured it's more brown than red, with a real depth of colour. It has a very sweet taste and so works well as a wine to pair with dessert, or even to have instead of dessert. It would work as a welcome drink as well. It is slightly sticky in feel and quite satisfying so you don't need to drink a lot. It has a warmth to it that will be much appreciated on autumn and winter days! It also has some citrus notes in it so goes well with a little orange peel. You can taste some bitter tones as an aftertaste.A lovely alternative to sherry or mulled wine, though the price is a little high for what it is.

It has been years since I last tried a vermouth, it was the famous commercial white. This is my first taste of a red vermouth and was not expecting great things. I was proven wrong. This is a delightful drink. I like the cork which made a delightful pop as the top came out - very satisfying and a lot better than a screw top.The overall smell is of a sherry but it is not an overpowering aroma. I was expecting the taste to be a strong sherry one as well, but it is not. It has a really nice taste with a balance of herbs and sherry, with a final sweetness to the taste. For me it tasted a little too sweet, but as I only drink it in small glasses, it is not too much of a problem.Would I buy this again, yes.

I'm not a huge drinker, nor am I a wine buff, though I do enjoy an occasional tipple. Previously when I've tried sherry, it's just been as a one-off, like at Christmas. Usually it's just too sweet and syrupy for my tastes. This Emilio Lustau red vermouth is different. It's actually delicious! It's sweet but also smooth. It warms the belly nicely. I can definitely see myself drinking a small glass of this on an autumnal evening with the fire roaring and wrapped up in a warm jumper. The back of the bottle reads, "A recipe that originates from the tradition of the House of Lustrau, sherry wines, wormwood, gentian, coriander and oranges enhance the personality of this vermouth."

Now on my second small glass of this red lustau Vermouth. So an appropriate time to now review it:)This vermouth has a fairly strong scent with hints of citrus and also reminds me of the smell of vanilla essence. This red vermouth has quite a pleasant taste,it is sweet but not overpoweringly sweet. After it has gone down you do get some slight, bitter tones. This vermouth has been made to a traditional recipe, and is a nice mix.At the moment I am drinking this straight but I reckon it would be a good accompaniment to dessert, maybe something like a panettone motta.

Being partial to a drop of sherry I was very intrigued to sample this high end version. I do like a sweet sherry but this vermouth doesn't disappoint as it has a sweet initial taste followed by delicious bitter but fruity after tones. I think this could be a perfect autumn/winter drink as despite serving it chilled it really does warm the cockles and makes you feel all nice and toasty inside. If you've never had a red vermouth before I definitely recommend this as one to try. Could work as a nice Christmas gift for anyone you know partial to a sherry too :)

This is actually a sherry rather than a regular wine so it is quite viscous and heavy with flavour. It is very smooth, strong and rather sweet. The botanicals give it a slightly flowery, fruity taste. I really like this sherry. It's a great after-dinner drink and very moreish. I could just sip it all night. The only reason I haven't given it five stars is that it's not sufficiently better than cheaper sherries to warrant the price tag. If that's not a problem, and you're a fan of sherry, you'll love it.

At Christmas my drink of choice is a Negroni, a good quality Gin paired with Campari and a quality Vermouth is heavenly. On appearance the bottle looks great, cork stopper takes a little effort to safely remove but its ok. Colour is a deep vibrant red and lovely spicy warming smell. On its own or with Ice its very nice but really has to be taken in a Negroni where the flavours come alive. Its worth the extra cost on the Vermouth, makes a significant difference.Cheers

This is really nice - neat or over ice - makes an excellent aperitif. I've used Noilly Pratt before, as a Vermouth, but not a red. It's the right side of bitter, the smooth side of bitter (if such a thing is possible). I drunk mine at room temperature, neat and was really pleased with it. It would make a lovely summer time aperitif too. I would definitely purchase this again and would be interested to try it mixed as a cocktail.Nice tipple, recommend this.

An extremely refreshing blend of aromatised wine, I’ve tried it mixed with lemonade over ice with a dash of Angostura and some shavings of orange and lemon peel and it was a really refreshing long drink.Following a suggestion from a friend, I also used a little in a sauce for sausages and mash and it gave a really lovely flavour that was discernible from the usual flavour of the sauce.Great neat over ice too.

Wow I love it.Very unusual blend of ingredients but the taste is beautiful. It is a Red Vermouth but so different.A blend of botanicals, gentian, sherries, coriander and orange. This is from an 1896 recipe but done differently of course.I was highly delighted with it and it lasted over 3 days between 2 without any detriment in taste. What else can I say a tasty wine with a bit of a kick.Really gorgeous.
