You'll see a lot of reviews saying how great light therapy is. I am a believer, but here I am trying to review this lamp specifically (I've had some experience of others) rather than the benefits of the treatment.In my experience, usability is the number one factor in choosing a SAD light. If it's inconvenient or restrictive you'll skip sessions. Can you eat breakfast, take a phone call or read a book, in comfort, and still get a good dose? Some of the smaller ones are not really up to the job unless you sit really close and give them your undivided attention (I confirmed this with a lux meter). By contrast, the Brazil is like sitting next to a sunny window.It really does chuck out an enormous amount of light over a wide useable area. Lovely.Mine (purchased direct from Lumie) did have a few minor niggles. The switch is so stiff, I have to use my other hand to stop the lamp siding across the desk. The cord was a bit mean at just over 1.5m. I had to buy an extension to give me more freedom with positioning. The diffuser was a bit scuffed in places and awkward to put back in (you have to pop it out to remove shipping padding). Small points, but for the price I expected more attention to detail. On the plus side, it's nice and simple. There's no battery to charge, no clock / timer / standby mode or any such digital gubbins to worry about. You could use it with an external time switch.Although this is one of the biggest and brightest available, I would still recommend getting a lux meter (1) to make sure your set-up is correct and (2) so you know when the tubes need replaced. Incidentally, the fluorescent tubes are not very expensive, and they're still far ahead of LED bulbs in cost/performance terms, although I have no doubt LEDs will catch up in a few years.6/11/13 update:Really glad I got this! As well as helping to keep the old body clock in sync, a session gives me a boost of alertness which is most welcome on these gloomy days. Checking Rosenthal's Winter Blues book again, he says 2,500 lux proved effective. I took some measurements. The Brazil is giving 10,000 at 35cm as spec'd. It's very bright straight away but takes a minute or two to reach full strength. More importantly, I'm getting 2,500 at a comfortable distance for desk / computer work. The light is diffuse enough not to worry about the exact position and orientation of my head all the time. I had previously found that to be an issue with a portable narrow-beam LED lamp from another company.

My daughter was identified as having a bipolar condition three years ago. I met with Dr. Norman Rosenthal (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Winter-Blues-Fourth-Everything-Affective/dp/1609181859/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1542494648&sr=8-2&keywords=winter+blues) last year, and after speaking with him we decided to try light therapy (though we were strongly counseled against doing this by a professional we respect greatly).She used this lamp from September 2017 to April 2018 and it has transformed her life - no depression throughout the winter period and (interestingly) no more than a flicker of mania this past summer.We're doing another full annual cycle before we're confident; however it does look like it is a cure for her particular form of bipolar disorder.She says it is like eating - you absorb the light until you feel you are full.There is very little documented evidence of this being effective, and the medical world is sceptical. However, a study was published last year ("Adjunctive Bright Light Therapy for Bipolar Depression: A Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial" AJP in Advance (doi: 10.1176/appi.ajp.2017.16101200)) which shows that something is happening

The light itself is huge, after lots of research i did want a bigger one vs a portable one as i wanted to be sure I didn't have to sit so close to it. This certainly fullfills this requirement however it's bigger than what I was expecting.I tried it as soon as it arrived yesterday evening and felt slightly better. With colder and darker mornings, afternoons and evening i was feeling a sense of loss for the sun and suffering from low energy, motivation and feeling completely down, unable to complete everyday tasks.I have tried again this morning and I am feeling a lot more optimistic and ready to get in the shower than i usually do. It could be a coinsdence but I think not.I am looking forward to seeing if this product can help me to overcome my winter blues which I have suffered with since being a child. Winter has always been a really depressing time for me and if this helps my survival and motivations of day to day life, when all I want to do is wrap up warm and hibernate untill signs of spring then it's definitely an investment.Potentially 5 stars but it's too soon to see ultimate results will update in a week

I wasn't diagnosed with SAD as such but I feel my energy drops and feel sleepy all the time as it gets colder and darker. I've been using it for over two months now and the difference it makes has been immense. I have a lot more energy and feel more upbeat and optimistic. I normally suffer quite badly with PMS, this light has lifted a lot of awful symptoms such a mood swings to minimum. So much so that I wasn't even aware that my period was due last month till the day it arrived. Previously I would have had to go through agonising 5-10 days of mood irritation and physical discomfort prior the period.The only drawback (if I could call it that) is that you do need to use it continuously,the days I skip the session (which has only been 2-3 times so far) I would start feeling sleepy by 4-5 pm. So I've learned my lesson and make sure I have at least 30mins everyday. Even though most days I leave it on for a lot longer. It's quite a pleasing light to be showered in.It's not a cheap device, but for me it's all worth it.

Note: remove foam protection from inside where bulbs are before use.Really bright, different to the blue wavelength lights that require similar or shorter time each day. I prefer this as it illuminates my room and i use it as a general light too.Sit 35 cms away, may vary but curvature helps and too be honest, whilst it is bright, the receptors that reset the body clock, are found in the peripheral retina. Ie... Light entering from the side without looking directly does the job.Takes a few days to really differentiate from placebo but for me its obvious immediately as i am very sensitive to the change in seasons and feel mood changes in the autumn and even on dark summer days.Give it a try,its useful for anyone, not just those who suffer greatly. I believe anybody can benefit from increased energy and better sleep and mood. We are creatures after all, and most creatures change their behaviour in the darker months, either by bailing to the where the sunshine is, or sleeping.All the besy.

Having used the Brazil light for over five years, and diagnosed with clinical depression and SAD for a great many more.I can vouch for the effectiveness of this light therapy for lifting my mood during the day, enabling me to work and perform everyday functions without the lethargy and gloom that predominated my mood during the autumn and winter months, prior to aquiring this SAD Light.'A word of advice.' Try to avoid using the light during the late evenings; as I did with relish on first using it, as it impeded my ability to get to sleep. This mistake on my part was easily remedied by only using the lamp during the day.To those of you who are suffering from dibilitating depression; there are many of us out there.Might I humbly advisethat you seek help from your GP. I have found the SAD lamp a powerful tool, but only in conjuction with the medication prescibed by my GP.

I've owned this lamp now for 2 months and use it everyday for around 30 mins, most days Ill have the lamp around 12-18" away from my eyes, generally to one side of me and I never stare directly at the lamp.After a few days I could definitely see a difference, I felt more alert and lively.Other benefits have been an increased attention span, generally better sleep, less anxiety and a more content general mood.The only downside was, initially, I felt a little nauseous for an hour or so after using the lamp, but this dissipated after a couple of weeks.If, like me you suffer during the autumn/winter months will a general lack of energy/alertness due to lack of day light I would definitely recommendbuying the Lumie Brazil 10,000 Lux SAD Light - Its has really changed my energy levels and given me a much more positive outlook in general.

This is a brilliant, brilliant light. I have tried three Lumie lights and this is my favourite. I use it in the office every day in the winter after it becomes dark, or when it's generally gloomy here in London - which is often. It emits an extremely natural-looking light, so much so that when I forget I have it on and come back to the room, it confuses me because I think there's sunlight there. It's VERY bright and quite large, so definitely think about this. Folks passing my desk by have been making jokes and putting on sunglasses :) However, it does the job for me and makes the winter days bearable. It's also very good quality and has a beautiful finish. Worth the money if you can afford it.One small tip - check out the Lumie website for refurbished items as you might find it there cheaper (sorry, Amazon!).

I've had this light for two days now, and the improvement for me is noticeable and significant. I'm left with a positive feeling for several hours after using it, and start to feel the benefit after as little as 10 minutes. It's definitely worth the cost. My main complaints are the very short lead, which makes it difficult to position well, and the lack of timer functions. I've bought a smart plug to help with the latter, but it's an extra cost and a clunky solution. Of course, the size makes it less flexible than smaller lamps, but I think I would struggle to get the same benefit from those. I don't need to be staring at this all the time.

I work in a dark office, on a mezzanine where there is very little natural light. This lamp has been wonderful at providing natural light to me (and my colleagues) particularly in gloomy mid-late afternoons. It casts a sunlight glow, and really has an impact on energy levels and mood. Its bigger than the lamp I previously had, and much brighter / better. We're investing in another one for home, for the winter months. I recommend this highly for anyone affected by the lack of light in winter and/or living in working in spaces without much natural light.

Had this for about a month now and I was skeptical at first.Now - whether it is a placebo effect or something more scientific I can tell you - this works for me - I feel more alert, more awake and my general mood seems much more positive.No hum, no headaches...I previously used the Lumie wake up clock with the sunrise feature - seriously - that is not a SAD light - just a dimming light - this is SERIOUSLY bright and a league apart to the wake up clocks.Really pleased I grabbed it.

I'm not sure how well it's working, but it certainly feels good so far. I keep it on the kitchen counter while I prepare dinner, and move it into the living room for my morning tea. Following other reviews, I decided on the Brazil model for its higher output.I spend quite a bit of time outdoors, but that's no guarantee of sunlight exposure, especially in the North West. This Lumia light is certainly worth a try if it can ease the passage of the winter months.

The even light is really pleasant from this lamp!It came well protected for transport, so all in all everything is well thought out, with this product.Same color temperature as my Innosol Mesa Mega Bright, so I use them both, for my morning light bath.I could do with just one, if my tables permitted it, but I like the freedom of having more powerful light from further away, and different angles.Morning coffee just taste so much better in 'sunlight'!

I was ver sceptical about these kind of things, but willing to give it a punt. It really seems to make a difference. We're retired and use it when we're having breakfast and then sometime late afternoon. I.e. a couple of half an hour stints. It really seems to raise our spirits/lighten our mood! And boy haven't we had some miserable days recently. Still in denial that it works, but were not doing anything else different.

this is in daily use, it is certainly helping with my SAD symptoms, I use it when sewing too, it brightens up the room and gives me the energy I need so I am actually doing things in the winter. I have found though I must not use it within two hours of going to bed, as I then don't sleep - wish I could have one in every room
