The way manufacturers derive their volume figures must differ greatly. The Osprey at 38 litres provides the same capacity for packing as the Lowe at 45 (without extension). For some years I have been on the hunt for a go-to rucksack for 1 or 2 day hikes to replace a Berghaus Freeflow 50 which is no longer available. Ignoring how much the front pocket could be expanded, the remainder of the sections of the Osprey also seem to be as large as or even a bit larger than the Berghaus. The Berghaus Freeflow 40 was no good, apart from being smaller, it was uncomfortable across the shoulders. The Osprey has been mostly great for the past two years but I prefer a top and bottom section separate access to the rucksack.I like to pack overtrousers, bivvy bag, insulation jacket (or sleeping bag), first aid kit, neck gaiter, gloves, Sealskinz hood in the bottom section. To reach the first aid kit for example would involve too much emptying of the sack. The bottom section of this Lowe is too small. This is due to its shape. If you look at the Osprey it looks like a baby penguin, bottom is wide than the top but this Lowe is like an adult penguin, mostly straight up and down, actually the top pocket area seems wider than the bottom which tapers in two dimensions whereas bottom of the Osprey is wide and flat.I tried the Osprey Stratos 50 but rejected it because much of the ventilated back panel is blocked. It designers should look at this Lowe to see how Lowe has put the adjustment facility inside the sack, not at the back of the ventilation panel. Also rejected was Osprey Atmos 50; the hip pockets chaff the arms and elbows even when empty. There are hip pockets on the Lowe's belt but I don't use them. Am glad that when empty, they do not cause chaffing on the arms and elbows.Regards comfort, neither sack is perfect. The Osprey has short padded section on the shoulder straps such that the adjustment buckles are exactly at my armpits. If you look at the photo, the padded sections of the Lowe are 3 inches longer and they are very much out of the way of armpits and swinging arms.If you look at the ventilation trampoline on the Osprey, the holes are large and offers superior ventilation, the whole pack panel is very comfortable, even when comparing to Stratos 50 and Atmos 50. The Lowe has a large gap in the middle. The AirZone for me is mostly fine but my problem with it is at the bottom where you see the blue coloured padding. This looks and feels like a very firm piece of closed cell foam. It digs into one's back when donned whereas the Osprey contours itself to ones curvature.I was tempted to keep this Lowe for winter use but was disappointed not to see anchor points on the lid to strap crampons. There are total of 6 points on the lid of the Osprey Exos 38 for this purpose. There are however, 4 anchor points, two either side of the front net pocket on the Lowe but that is not my preferred place to put it as I was quick access to this net pocket to dump items during a trek. In most respects that Lowe almost meets my specifications. In summary this Lowe AirZone is very good but not quite suitable.
