I have worn Lowa Men's Renegade GTXs (with Sole® Softec Casual Insoles) all day every day since about 2006.I wear them because they are one of the two things that cured my plantar faciitis. (The other cure being bare feet on a tray of ice cubes for 15 to 20 minutes which I only use to eliminate acute pain. And this ice treatment has only been needed when I've abused my feet by walking barefoot on hard surfaces because the Lowas completely eliminate my plantar faciitis pain.)So, obviously, I think very highly of these boots. And when they become too tattered for "business casual," I get a new pair and relegate the old pair to work boots and relegate my work boots to garden boots. So I always have three pairs of my Lowas on hand. And the business casual pair generally last 12 to 14 months of every day use.For those of you who also suffer from plantar faciitis:The sandals that I wear are the Chaco Z1 Vibrams. They're as supportive as the Lowas. I'm even able to run trails in them. The sandals I wear in the shower (I can't stand on hard surfaces anymore) are the Chaco Hipthong 2 Ecotreads which are also as supportive as the Lowas. And, my running shoes, they're New Balance MT1110s with the Sole Softec Ultra Insoles. Finally, since I can never walk barefoot on a hard surface again due to my plantar faciitis, the slippers I've worn in the house, also every day since about 2006, are Finn Comfort Men's Clogs.Notes:Although each of the pieces of footwear I've mentioned here seem to be quite expensive, they last so long and continuously perform so well that I view them as a bargain. For example, I've put over 200 miles on the MT1100s and only replaced them because the fabric was beginning to tear, not because they weren't supporting me properly anymore. And the Finn Comfort Clogs, my house slippers, if I'm in the house, I'm wearing them and I'm still on my first pair since 2006.Also, when I say I've *cured* my plantar faciitis with the above footwear what I mean is that I have no pain unless I do something known to cause pain like stand on a hard floor and cured also means that I've run 5K's, done a Sprint Triathlon as well as pedaled the entire 200K Horribly Hilly Hundreds bicycle event. To conclude, however, although Lowa claims that the Renegades are waterproof, I know that that's just a silly marketeer's dream/wish which has never been true of any of the 6 pairs I've owned. My proof involves standing in the water at the bottom of the driveway while busting up and removing the accumulated ice after a snowstorm. But if you want to test this, just take four steps through a puddle that's deep enough to reach the point that's just below the Lowa's laces. And then, of course, wring out your socks. ;-)Good luck!Sincerely,Scott WingerVerona, WI

I've just returned from teaching a 2.5 week field camp wearing these boots and feel confident in giving a review singing their praises. This is the most I've spent yet on hiking boots, but I feel it was 100% worth it if you are doing hikes lasting more than 2-3 hours. I wore them every day for 19 days, on hikes as long as 12 miles/day with elevation changes up to 1800 ft across rough trails. I am not an especially fit person, so there was some soreness, but far less than with any other boots I've had. I was delighted to be able to purchase wide hiking boots. They were probably a touch wider than I needed, but quite preferable to boots that are too tight (remember that your feet will swell on long hikes!)In shallow river crossings, I appreciated that I could simply walk across with these waterproof boots, while others on the trips had to balance precariously on logs and stones to keep their feet dry. While deciding whether to buy the boots, I was concerned by other reviews stating it was difficult to get a tight lacing around the ankles. I didn't have this trouble at all (possibly a difference in ankle shape), and found that the 3 loops for laces on the sides of the ankles made it easier to put on and to lace up. I wore these around for 2 days before going on trail, but suspect they would have done well fresh out of the box. I can't vouch for how they perform in cold weather as the lowest temperatures I hiked in were in the upper 40s. The only downside I experienced was that there was limited arch support and I have a tendency for overpronation. This made my arches a little sore on especially rocky hikes. But, overall, I was very happy with my purchase.

I live in the northwoods and spend a good amount of time in the National Forest. I was looking for a boot that I can spend the day wearing while hiking. I need a sole that will hold on wet rocks, give me a good feel of the trail but not so much that I can feel every sharp rock on the bottom of my feet. I want something that is fairly water resistant. Most important it has to be comfortable with good support. The last pair of boots I owned were Merrill. Total piece of junk. I shopped quite a bit this time and decided I didn't want anything made in China. Too many bad reviews and all that I tried had a cheap look and feel. I tried Vasque, Columbia, Keen, Lowa, Rocky and others that I can't remember. The Lowa fit and felt the best and looked well made. But I didn't want to spend $230 (MSRP) for them. When I saw them on Amazon for $162, I jumped. So far they have been what I expected. The boot length is right on, the width may be a little snug. I expect that to change as they break in. I took them out onto some wet, sloping rock and they held perfectly They give good support and feel comfortable. So far, they are just what I was looking for. If things change, I'll update this review.

I live in the Lake District with two dogs and when I am not climbing mountains I am walking the dogs on lower level walks. I always have 3 pairs of boots on the go. First, a pair of proper winter boots which will take crampons. Second, a general pair of heavy duty 3/4 season boots.I bought the Lowa Renegade GTX as a pair of lighter boots to wear on low level walks and on higher walks in Spring Summer and Autumn when the conditions to not warrant my 3/4 season boots. They are ideal for the purpose. They are light, comfortable and needed no breaking in. They are ideal for less demanding conditions or when my other boots happen to be in need of slow drying our before I can wear them again - which happens far too often in the Lake District. No proper waterproof leather boots can be described as cheap these days but these are very good value - highly recommended for someone like me who needs a lot of boots or for anyone who wants a comfortable boot for summer weekends away in the mountains or dog walking at low level in the winter.

I took this pair out on a short 14'er in the fall. With no break in period, the 4 mile hike wasn't too bad. I had no blisters and only minor aches in the ball of one foot. However, they really shined on our Everest base camp trek. I wore these boots all day, every day, over varying terrain. I had almost no issues after 13 days and 76 miles. No blisters, no pain, just some minor discomfort that I think could be solved by upgrading the insoles. If I could take off 1/2 of a star, I would. The only part of the boot I've experienced issues with are the eyelets above the arch. I've had the laces pop out of the hooks if I laced them up quickly (e.g. a few miles into a hike). On a somewhat related topic,I also tie my boots a little weird. I don't know the name of the knot, but I secure the top two sets of hooks differently to help lock in my heel. This has caused the leather on the upper part of the boot (where the hooks are) to "bend in". This makes it a little more difficult to tie my boots correctly.

Comfortable immediately. Only one walk so far of about 3.5 miles in rain and long wet grass. I treated them with Lowa active cream and Scotchguard the day before. The walk was off road and they felt secure. No rubbing and no discomfort. The most important thing for me was that my socks remained bone dry. This has not been the case with "waterproof" boots with a Goretex tag from other manufacturers. Lowa have clearly fitted the Goretex lining properly. Very promising so far. I walk over 2000 miles a year off road with my dog so I'll update this if I remember in about 1000 - 2000 miles.... Update after 3 months x 30 days x 7 miles off road dog walking in all weathers. Best boots yet.Comfortable from the start. Genuinely waterproof unlike some others that make this claim. Easy on, easy off, twice a day. Hardly any noticeable wear so far. They seem to support my ankles well. I am prone to twisting and spraining and it has not happened in these boots. They grip well even on wet wooden mossy walkways.

I'm limited to choice of boots because I have size 16 1/2 feet. What they say about men with big feet is true, by the way. These boots are absolutely wonderful. This is my 4th pair, so I now happily buy them online, knowing they will fit perfectly from the first mile to the last. They usually last me about 1200 miles of Lake District hiking, which is rugged, rocky, muddy, boggy and lots of up and down. Feet remain dry even if walking through a stream 3-4 inches deep. Eventually, they always fail at the same place - where the upper meets the sole, inside foot, next to the base of the big toe. Suddenly one day you feel the water creep in. Then I relegate them to my "fair weather hiking" boots, and buy new. I regularly rub G-Wax into them when fully dried. I can't say this extends the life by much. I've tried several pairs of (more expensive) Meindl boots in the past, but Lowa Renegades have grippier soles (for Lake District rocks at least), and also the Lowas feel more flexible.

I have been wearing various variations of Lowa hiking boots for almost 2 decades and they continue to impress. There was no breaking in period (never has been for any Lowa boots I've worn...how do they DO that?), they offer excellent ankle support, extremely comfortable soles (and I suffer from neuropathy so this huge) and they are waterproof as advertised. I have hiked almost 500 miles in them since June and forded several ankle deep streams without my feet ever getting wet. My feet never sweat in them and they have held up remarkably well considering I don't always treat them as well as I should. I have seen no indication of the bottom separating from the boot as many others have mentioned as a problem. That has happened to all of my previous Lowa's AFTER I've put more than 6,000 miles on them at which point I feel I've gotten my money's worth. I highly recommend these boots and will most likely be ordering a replacement pair in case they stop making this model.

Though I haven't owned any other boots in this price range, I was blown away by what a difference these have made. I've done several strenuous snow hikes where my friend's feet have just about bit the dust, becoming waterlogged and icy halfway thru our trek. These have kept me warm and dry every time. Great for summer hiking as well, the grip on them while on desert rocks is insane. Almost makes me too confident knowing I can always trust in my shoes to get me through anything I have encountered. Have crossed many rivers in them as well and as long as water stays under the top you'll be dry as you were before the river. Comfortable too!Only negative I have encountered are the shoelace clasps maybe aren't deep enough?Seems my shoelace always pops off the first one, I've never had to re-tie my shoes but does loosen it up a bit which isn't the best when you're scrambling down rocks.

As my first mid boot (always had low shoes), these boots were really great in my trip to the Tien Shan. Bought these 4 days before our trip and broke them in for that period, but it doesn't really seem necessary since they are comfortable from the start. Was out walking up and down slopes in Kyrgyzstan for practically nine days in varying weather conditions (under mild rain for many consecutive days, and few times in dry desert-like environment under the heat of the sun) and surfaces (mud, rock, dry sand) and they really held up well. Despite being in wet conditions for several days in a row, my feet were never soaked even if I felt that the shoe was actually absorbing water in the fabric.I wasn't too worried with stepping on some shallow streams. My feet were not very sweaty during the very dry and hot days. Each shoe is still in one piece. Definitely worth the money.

These are great boots, had them for 3 months now and covered about 50 miles, from walking to the shops to climbing Ben Nevis they have held up well. For simplicity I will bullet point my thoughts-Comfy from the first wear-As they are leather they take a little wearing in tofeel like they are perfect-after 50 miles and a clean they look brand new-feet have stayed dry in moderate rain-untested in heavy rain-easy to put on and get off as metal hooks to lacethrough-no blisters or rubbing at all-no wear and tear noticed at all.-I usually wear 10-10.5 trainers and size 11 is perfect me forJust a couple of points to note. I changed the insoles as found the originals not soft enough, use a quick coat of renapur to get the colour and waterproof back if needed. Look after these boots and you can't go wrong, should last years

Hands down, the most comfortable boots I have ever owned, straight out of the box.Recreationally, I walk long distances, averaging 25km a day. I've been searching for the Holy Grail of boot heaven, in vain, for years....They come in regular, wide and narrow width (wide: add 7mm; narrow: subtract 5mm) - in the UK (I think) it's only possible to buy the regular size.On the 'shoe fitting gauge' I'm bang on 9UK (reg. width) - so, 10UK reg. fit perfectly with room, crucially, to wiggle toes in ample toe box.It would be great if LOWA did a synthetic version! They do have a lot of stitching and seams, so boot care is a must...Once I've clocked up 1,000km (hopefully)I will revert here with further thoughts...

My previous Lowas (bought in Switzerland) lasted me 12 years and I've taken them on hikes on four continents. I figure I've probably done about 6000 miles on them, most of it in mountainous terrain. After a dozen years of faithful service and many beautiful memories under trees and stars, it was time to replace them since the tread had worn and a couple of the seams had come apart. There's no reason to switch when something works, so I got the current version of the boots I've previously owned. SO far, so good, I've taken them out for a couple of day-trips and they've performed well. Quite comfortable out of the gate and they feel pretty much like the boots I had earlier.

These are without a doubt the best boots I have ever owned. They are comfortable right out of the box. They are super tough and scratch resistant, due to the thick real leather. Tie that in with the goretex liner, and they are going to hold up to almost anything. I did treat the leather so it would hold up to the snow and muck, and the leather did darken quite a bit. I was expecting this so I had no problem with it, but if you want to do the same know it is going to happen or consider a lighter color to start. I have worn these boots nearly every day since I got them and I love them, but they are still leather boots and they will not breathe very much.
