I bought this lamp with some hesitation as a consequence of the discrepancy between most customer reviews, which were very positive, and a few negative reviews which spoke of the poor manufacturing quality, and which claimed the lamp was hard to assemble and even raised safety concerns because of how much one had to twist the flex connecting the two halves of the lamp, when assembling it. I went ahead with purchase only after speaking to the manufacturer, who was extremely helpful and who sounded very professional and genuine. My lamp arrived from Amazon without any instructions in the box (a packing oversight), which did cause a short period of puzzlement as to how to connect the flexible arm to the base,as the lamp comes with these separated by about six inches of loose flex protected by in transit packing which has to be removed, and this loose flex did not seem willing to be pushed either into the arm or the base, so at first I did not see how the two halves could be made to fit together. A quick call to Lifemax solved the problem. The trick is to remove the packing round the loose flex, then to fold the flex in half. It can then easily be absorbed into the flexible arm, after which it is simplicity itself to locate the arm into the base, and use the retaining screw (after you take it out of the base first so you can fit the arm into the base) to firmly link the two pieces together. Once I knew the technique, it took less than a minute to assemble the lamp.I see no signs of poor manufacture, and I think the customer who raised health and safety concerns because of how difficult it was to push the loose flex sufficiently into the lamp to fit the two halves together without overtwisting the flex, must have been trying to do this in an inappropriate way, as I was initially before seeking advice from Lifemax. I cannot see how doing this in the way recommended by the manufacturer, can possibly cause a safety issue with the flex. It is really perfectly straightforward so long as one takes the obvious precaution of approximately lining up the hole in the arm base with the hole in the receiving neck of the lamp base, before fitting the two pieces together.Once assembled it takes less than a minute of experimentation to get the feel of how to angle the arm so that the head does not start to droop down under its own weight. After that, the lamp is very stable, and very effective as a relaxing and natural reading light. Its styling is modern and functional rather than strikingly elegant, but it is unobtrusive and quite attractive in its grey incarnation, and I think it would fit gently into most decors. The only factor to take into account before purchase if you are thinking of using it as a bedside lamp, say, where space may be limited, is the size of the base, which is up to approx .24 cm long by 19cm wide. The oval shape means this does not look particularly bulky, but your table top needs to be able to accommodate this footprint alongside whatever else you may want to have on it. If your table top is too small for this, it may be worth considering the standing lamp, which is not as high as most, and would probably work well as an alternative lamp for a bedside or to the side/behind a chair or sofa.I am delighted with this lamp. It is very effective without being glaring or over dominating, very relaxing on the eyes, gives a much more natural light than my old bedside reading lamp, makes print much easier to read. and brings visual images much more to life. I would recommend it to anyone who is prepared for some very simple self assembly. It is much cheaper than any other natural light reading lamp I have come across, and as such extremely good value. The life expectancy of the bulb is approx 8,000 hrs, and if/when a replacement is needed, these can easily be obtained for approx £9 from Amazon or Lifemax direct, who plan to keep them available into the future. It may finally be worth mentioning that I checked with the manufacturer whether this lamp could be used into the late evening e.g. as a bedside reading lamp, as I know that light boxes which use natural daylight bulbs, and are designed to help people who do not get enough daylight in winter, and lose energy or suffer lower moods as a result, are not meant to be used within 4 hours of going to sleep, as they stimulate the brain too much and so can prevent sleeping. The Lifemax lamp uses much less powerful bulbs, which are fine for reading and desk work, but which do not have the same stimulus as light boxes. So there is no problem with this lamp, using it into the late evening or in bed.1 don't work for the company by the way. I'm just a very pleased customer who likes to acknowledge a good product when I come across it.

The packing of this lamp is impressive and the major parts are separated by a substantial lump of polyfoam and corrugated card. The base is rather large and quite heavy and a thumb screw needs to be removed in order to assemble the swan neck into it. As mentioned by another reviewer, there is a rather large excess of internal mains lead, presumably present to allow the style of packaging used, that needs to be somehow squeezed back into the neck. Twisting is one solution but folding it gently works just as well. The screw then needs to be replaced, having aligned two small holes. No tools or other assembly is required as the bulb is pre-installed, and partly protected with more polyfoam. The mains lead is of reasonable length, about 1.5 metres at least and the switch is based on the underside of the light head, itself quite a substantial unit needed to house the four-tube fluorescent bulb. Unlike standard bulbs of this type that run at mains frequency, 50Hz in the UK, this runs at 40KHz, which is too high a rate to notice any flicker! The downside is that the bulb type is not one you are likely to find in any high street store but it does have an estimated life of at least 6,000 hours so should last a few years of normal use. Rated at 27W or equivalent to 150W filament bulb, the bulb is more than sufficient for its stated purpose - to read.In use, it is more than adequate for its stated purpose - to read - as its bulb is rated as 27W or equivalent to 150W filament bulb, but more energy efficient and without the heat. According to the manufacturers, the lamp is suitable for tasks that require some elements of colour matching, as it is classified as 'wide-spectrum' with output across a major part of the spectrum.Recommended.Update @ 6-2012When I first wrote my review, I had some concerns about the after-effects of the construction and necessary part-assembly of the lamp. Several months on, I no longer have any such concerns and have revised my review and adjusted the rating accordingly.A relative has since bought another and it now has been modified to be fully pre-assembled on delivery and the neck design has been modified to be flattened on the forward side rather than completely circular as it was and the base slightly modified to match. Although it makes no functional difference, the lamp looks slightly neater, if for no reason than the narrower stem. The packaging has been changed to accommodate the changes and is now slightly faster and simpler to unpack.

This review is for the black version of the desk lamp.I produce very detailed artworks sitting at a desk so good light, (preferably day light), is essential for accurate colour reproduction. Over the years I've tried many different forms of artificial lighting. I've found that standard, household incandescent lamps (tungsten & halogen) just don't produce a satisfactory colour of light for me and besides they waste a lot of energy due to heat losses. Many of the compact fluorescent lamps I've tried have produced a warm, yellowish light, (not suitable for my work but okay for most general living spaces), and they seem to take ages to `warm up'to their brightest light output. Here are findings my which I hope will enable you to decide if this desk lamp is right for you.Disadvantages:1. Large base & bulky appearance - takes up a lot of room on desk (24 x 17.5 cm approx) & fairly unattractive.2. On/off switch position under lamp head unit - okay for me but could be difficult for people with poor contrast vision, (I think it would be better if the rocker switch was on the base).3. Replacement lamp cost - at present, about 25% of whole lamp unit cost. But if the lamp lasts for years, (lamp life supposedly 8000 hours), then the cost is irrelevant.Advantages:1. No assembly required - just remove packaging from around lamp.2. Study base and strong, flexible arm which appears to be good quality.3. Fairly long power cord - about 170 cm (67 inches) from base to mains plug4. Non-flickering & bright daylight lamp - according to the manufacturer, the lamp colour effect is `daylight at noon'.5. Flood light effect - gives a good light over whole desk area (rectangular lamp head unit is quite large, at about 24 cm long).I have only been using this desk lamp for a short time so I cannot comment on the life of the lamp or the unit - only time will tell! For my task lighting I need a bright, whitish light which is instantly available & the Lifemax 251.2, Desktop High Vision Reading Light seems to fulfil these requirements.Overall, I feel the advantages of this product far outweigh the disadvantages and so I would happily recommend it.

We own two Lifemax floor standing versions of this lamp and because my girlfriend is doing a photographic degree we needed to upgrade our study desklamp to a near daylight quality one for viewing photographs. The lamp arrived well packed with no self assembly required at all - it was ready to use out of the box, so, presumably, it represents an updated version to that some of the other reviewers refer to on this page, although, it is still designated as Model 250.2. The lamp is well made and the heavy base ensures it is stable in use - the neck is totally flexible and can accommodate being set to most angles and staying in position. The on/off switch is conveniently situated on the underside of the lamp-head rather than "in-line" on the power cord.In terms of light output - yes, this light really does make a difference to reading and its' near daylight output ensures optimum constrast without glare. The wide lamp head spreads the light evenly over just the right area for reading or viewing photographs. The low consumption bulb is easily replaceable and reasonably priced, although, I think unless you are unlucky it will last years. The overall build quality is very good. There are other "Serious" reading lamps you can buy but they cost significantly more, and, we do actually own one of those premium lights too for bedtime reading - there is no real difference in features and performance(except that there is a dimmer option) and the Lightmax wins hands down for value. Overall, this is a good value, well made product that will make reading easier and last years into the bargain. Very hard to fault (and the floor standing version is equally good too). Recommended.

This lamp gives off really white light... no yellow tinge here. Great for color and hue identification and reproduction, if that's your thing. Simulates daylight quite nicely. Functions well as a reading or desk lamp, as the light is relatively bright and focused. Uses two bulbs side by side, which is supposed to last 8000 hours before requiring replacement (though quite honestly, I'd be of half the mind to replace the entire lamp if it dies with a newer model). My only complaints regarding the lamp, is that the neck (i.e. the flexible portion) feels a bit weak, and may be unable to hold up the weight of the light after a while. I haven't really noticed any sagging yet,but if this was one of those lamps that used springs to suspend the light, I would consider the spring to be 'failing.' My cord also had quite a bit of white residue on it, reminiscent of some sort of label or sticker that was poorly torn off. It doesn't really impinge on the function of the lamp... it just makes it look poorly manufactured. All in all, it functions well; as long as you are not trying to get a lamp that fits in with a contemporary styled room, it's look is fine. If this lamp was lost or stolen, I would buy it again.----addendum: after having the lamp for a month now, the neck does not seem any weaker than when I first got it. No complaints so far with it's usage; it has served me well. I can't recommend it enough!

What an absolutely fantastic light. I thought the lamp I had was pretty fantastic until I bought this - WOW !!!!!!! I bought this, not to use when reading - I don't have time for that as I nurse my 97 year old Mother but I bought it to use at my computer - IT'S BRILLIANT - no pun intended. Would definitely NEVER go back to an ordinary lamp again - HONESTLY. Seriously though, you guys out there should try this - WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!! As a side issue [ but equally important ] to the brilliance of this lamp, packaging was great - as was delivery - arrived a week before promised delivery date. Also, I read reviews of this lamp before I bought it and quite a few of these reviews said it was very difficult to assemble - it's nothing of the sort - no joking,it took me about 4 minutes to assemble - no more - so don't let that put you off buying this lamp - it's fantastic. Am thinking about buying another + possibly 1 for my best friends birthday. Honestly, you'll NEVER regret buying this lamp.

Good lamp for a bedside table.Reading should be less eye-straining given the"near-daylight" bulb.Mine came ready-assembled in the box so perhaps some reviews refer to the floor-standing version. My only gripe is the fact that the necessarily large base has a slightly convex top whereas, had it been flat, would have allowed other bedside bits and pieces to be placed upon it.Apart from that and its lack of beauty,a worthwhile purchase.Addendum : After just under three years of use the bulb failed.Replacement bulbs failed to work. The fuse was checked and found to be ok.On examination the plastic surround to the circuit board within the base was found to have melted on one side. For safety reasons Ihad to dispose of the lamp.Although it worked well for some time I feel it's useful lifespan should have exceeded three years.Would not buy another due to safety fears.

I use this for painting/drawing, and it`s simply an excellent light. I was going to buy a Daylight company lamp, as I`m very familiar with their products, but opted for this because of the price, and flexibility of the head. I`m very pleased that I did as the light is fantastic - covering a wider area than I expected, and the lead is a decent length too so I can easily position it exactly where I want to. It`s solidly constructed, and rather pleasant looking in it`s own way. I`d highly recommend this for not only reading but any tasks where a replication of natural light is beneficial (colour-matching, detail, contrast etc.), well worth the money.PS. Another plus point that I`ve discovered is that if,for example, your clumsy wife happens to stumble over the electrical cord, and sends your new lamp tumbling to the ground, it still works...(grrr).

Lifemax's mission is to help people deal with deteriorating eyesight, and it has to be said that this item, which is very nicely finished, looks like it came from the NHS! It's footprint is nearly A4 size, and the lamp unit at the top is not much smaller, but if you need this much light, then you need this much lamp!As a by-the-shoulder table lamp, it suddenly makes you remember how easy it used to be to read everyday stuff, but my main purpose is to shed more light on my kitchen table so that I can continue with my drawing and painting. For this, I found I need to tip it up a bit (well, quite a lot actually)at the back in order to get the light right over the work - the flexible neck is a bit like mine (it won't quite let me look around through 360 degrees).I recommend this product unreservedly

The proportions of this surprised me, the lamp part being quite large whilst not too tall, so check out the specification before you purchase. Whilst described as a reading light, I wanted it to light a work area, used for various practical tasks (e.g. art & model making).Because the lamp is quite squat and I paint on a desk easel, I positioned the lamp on top of a cupboard to the side and about 1 metre above my work area. Initially as a temporary measure, this has worked well with the bright, very natural light reflecting off the various surrounding surfaces, so I get no irritating shadows (e.g. from my hand on the paper).Ii is very easy on the eyes and I forget that I am using an electric light which is better than I expected.

Love this light. Great for the office desk or doing homework. Wonderful hue of white pure light which doesn't blind out monitors or screens. Because it's fluorescent, it is a cool heat (great for little inquisitive fingers, no heat when you touch it). Came out from the box without any building or screwing; plug and go!Highly recommended. Don't hesitate to buy it if you want a very reasonable, well built, lamp.If I had any criticism; it would be the position of the on/off switch is in a stupid place. Placed behind the light area instead of the base; and not luminous in the dark (so you don't have to pat around for it in the dark); this is a very minor quibble about an otherwise excellentlamp.

This lamp is almost surprisingly ugly - the kindest thing you could say would be 'industrial chic', but in fact it just reminds me of all the depressingly utilitarian, beige, plastic objects of my childhood. It also seems to pick up dirt easily, and look a bit scruffy. *But* it does exactly what it claims, throwing an agreeable pool of light which is very easy on the eyes, excellent to work in, and, as far as I can tell (it still being dull autumn daylight outside) without that bluish coldness I associate with most 'daylight' lamps. And it is simple to put together, requiring no tools of any kind. So, as long as you don't want a beautiful object on your desk, I recommend it quite highly.

Wasn't entirely sure what is really meant by 'daylight' lamp. I work at home in a rather gloomy, window-less nook and bought it on the basis I'd try anything to cheer it up! It's amazing how much it improves the environment besides making it comfortable to work because you can see so clearly without getting a headache. The light is white and clear as day but doesn't wear you out the way fluorescent office light does. Looks reasonably stylish too.It needed assembling (even though it said it didn't when I bought it) but it wasn't rocket science. Went together without bother and is sturdy and stable. Decently priced too - will get another one, perfect!

After struggling with standard lamps to read, I got fed up a few days ago and bought one of these based on the good reviews. I am beating myself up now about this - why didn't I buy one before? I'm a historian, and so I spend many hours of the day reading and writing. With my eyesight already defective, things were just getting worse. I received my light about an hour ago and have been reading, writing with MUCH more ease and I even feel better (I get a little sad in winter with no sun). This brightens my room considerably, and I can see myself becoming more productive simply because I can see so much better now.
