You may not have heard of Leifheit before and wonder who they are, and whether their products are any good? So, here is a little background info about them.Leifheit AG is a German manufacturing company that makes kitchen equipment. It was founded in 1959 by Günter Leifheit, 1920 – 2009, with his wife Ingeborg. They sold the company in 1973 and today it is part of SDAX. It has its headquarters at Nassau, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, although it also has subsidiaries in the USA, Czech Republic, France, South Africa and elsewhere. Its kitchen equipment trades under the name Soehnle.Leifheit invent, design and manufacture a large range of domestic products, from ironing boards to rotary driers, laundry equipment, kitchen equipment including preserving jars, as well as cleaning equipment. Their innovative designs have won awards. They sell through John Lewis and other retail outlets. They have a fairly good reputation. These can openers appear to be extremely well made, even though they are made in China and not in Germany. Sometimes Chinese goods are sub-standard, break easily and wear out sooner than expected… but these can openers are in a quite different and higher class. They are made of faultless, sturdy stainless steel and yet still have an elegant feel about them. All the metal edges are rounded and there are no sharp edges to act abrasively in your hands. The handles are coated in a generous white high quality plastic which feels smooth and pleasant in the hand, with the top side extra smooth and the under-side slightly micro granulated, so that they do not slip when in use. Examples of a well thought out design. The can opener operates like a Rolls Royce, so smoothly and quietly that you wonder if it has cut the tin open at all ? Yes, it has. And, just as claimed, it leaves no sharp edges. It is an amazingly efficient mechanism. To operate the opener, the handles are opened slightly, the head is engaged on the top of the can, and a an elegant plastic knob is twisted by hand. Presto !... an opened can in seconds. All completely effortlessly. These can openers have been precision engineered to work so well. As a bonus, there is also a metal cap opener, flipping open the type of cap which seals fizzy drinks and beers etc. On the other side, there are a pair of nippers, small jaws that act like mini pliers. Maybe useful for something? These can openers should last a lifetime, so it is a puzzle why the manufacturer only guarantees them for 3 years. Some other makes guarantee for 10 years or more, so this lets the product down a little. At RRP £27.95, and an Amazon price of £21.75, they seem expensive. But if you want the best quality and can afford the price… these surely will satisfy even the most critical owner. They are a sheer pleasure to use. They are faultless.

When you unpack this can-opener, you may initially be a little under-whelmed, especially if you have just paid over £20 for it. It looks like a perfectly normal, run of the mill opener, readily available in any supermarket for under a fiver. However, it works perfectly. With cheaper openers, the blade will often fail to stay in place, or simply won't deal with more awkward tasks, like square tins, or these large flat steak pies. This opener deals with everything I have asked it to do with ease.It operates differently from most openers by cutting the side of the tin, rather than the top of the lid. This results in the lid coming off neatly, and leaves no sharp edges. This is at first a little baffling until closer inspection shows that the edges have been folded over by the opener's action; quite ingenious, and a real plus, certainly for clumsy individuals like me!In summary, this is a great can-opener; simple and safe to use. I would recommend it to anyone, but would understand if they demurred sue to the price.

The safety aspect of this basically folds over the sharp metal bit as it opens, leaving a smooth ridge and taking the whole top and lip off, and not just the inside circle of the can.It sits on top of the can rather than on the edge, and the first few times it didn't catch, lost the catch or was very stop and start with the mechanism. Other times it was fluid and there was no tension at all, the can opened with such light effort and ease that you can see the precision design. However I currently have a JML opener, battery powered and half the price, which also is a safety opener that ensures no sharp edges and it works a bit better. Hence my reason for 4 stars because in my experience it wasn't every time the easiest to use, even though when I could work it it was fantastic, and the price to me for a tin opener seems extortionate.

I bought one of these in 1990. By 2020 it had been dropped too many times and the plastic handles had cracked, and is was getting hard to use ( I am sure WD40 would have sorted it, but the cracked handles where holding water). When it was time to replace there could be no option but to go for the same brand. I am convinced if I'd bought normal tin openers, I would have got through 5 or 6 over these last 30 years.

We had another make (more expensive) bought about 10 years ago, and the gear was starting to wear, found this at almost half the price of the original one, and just the same operation, very pleased. We like that after you remove the lid, it just sits back on the top of the tin, so that half tin of beans can go back in the fridge with the lid on (loose, but rests on the tin fitting just inside the tin).

Like another reviewer it actually took my wife and I five minutes to work out how this Leifheit can opener actually worked. And even when we did think we'd cracked it we were a little dubious and the action seemed too easy.Lo and behold though the lid came off the top of our tin of chopped tomatoes with no sharp edges at all. Amazing really.Wonderful.

This is a neat can opener. It is an easy to use can opener. It opens cans without sharp edges. It cuts on the side which enables a lid to be placed over the can.Guaranteed for 3 years.Overall a brilliant can opener that should last.

Went for a Leifheit as I used to buy this brand when I lived in Germany and it has never disappointed. Functional, nice to look at and good quality. I am hoping it will last as long as its predecessor which was about 30 years!
