Leifheit Linomatic Rotary Washing Line 500 Plus, 50 mThis is one of a range of engineered clothes line / driers from Leifheit who have a good reputation for quality items. It has long aluminium arms that enclose the line so keeping it clean when not in use. The arms fold up and down quite easily although you do need to watch what you are doing. The four arms fold up into a compact shape and fit loosely together when vertical. It was rather a large intimidating package when it arrived and I was a little unprepared for it's size. It needs a little thought before you set it up. As the main shaft is 500mm dia, it needs a special ground socket fitted. It comes with a simple black plastic ground socket and to use this the ground must be dug out and the socket concreted into place. There is an alternative available which screws into the lawn and even though this cost an additional £17, I opted for this method for ease of use and the fact that it boasted an internal "levelling" mechanism to get the drier vertical if the socket was a little "off". Simples ...!!!!????When the screw socket arrived I made a pilot hole and checked for vertical...that bit was easy enough, the socket screwed into the ground OK and capped with a large black dome and collar (to protect it from an over aggressive lawn mower). A practical idea but it is ugly and spoiled the look of the lawn. We spent the next hour and a half trying to get the drier to sit vertically using the internal adjustments without much success. .There were a couple of "give up" moments before reaching a less than perfect but broadly acceptable result. Fitting the drier and opening it were easy although a little care is needed with the arms. The drying space and the area when open is immense. There is 50 metres of line which in truth is unlikely to all be used and plenty of room to spread out the washing. The line can be tensioned to take out any sagging for heavy items and will remain clean as it sits inside the arms when folded up and not in use. There is a doubt in my mind about the strength of the cord but time will answer that.It is an impressive piece of equipment once set up but has a few practical issues which one would not expect on an item listed at over £170 (Amazon discounting to a more acceptable £112). The screw socket is awkward and less than effective to set up to get the desired vertical alignment. When closed up and not in use you really need the optional green cover (£10) if you leave the drier in place. In addition when being moved there is nothing to hold the arms together - a clip or a strap would have been beneficial. The green cover does that job well and keeps everything clean when in store. The unit is too tall to be able to fit the green cover unless the drier is removed to the horizontal position. It is a pity the screw socket and the green cover were not included in the original package.Being so much larger than our existing unit makes handling a bit more awkward and I suspect it will be the man of the house who puts it up and takes it down.It is a good piece of equipment ....at a price and whether it performs over a longer period cannot yet be answered. We are only now approaching outside drying weather (well in Scotland) and it has not seen a lot of action yet. It carries a 3 year warranty, useful for peace of mind although I would not want the hassle of trying to return a package of this size.

Leifheit is well known for the quality of its products, and this is another prime example of why the reputation of the company exists. This rotary washing line is different to the majority of the better quality competitors. The clothes line, when not in use, retracts into the arms, which keep them dry and clean. This is a large rotary washing line, and is absolutely brilliant for a lot of washing. The rotary washing line is bulky but light, so it’s relatively easy to pick up, but not quite so simple to transport home (unless you’ve got a large car, or an estate). The packaging is good, and very simple to remove. There are instructions, which are in several languages, including English. The “spike” that is needed to go into the ground is included. My first use of the rotary washing line, I dug a hole in the ground and put the spike into the ground, and inserted the rotary washing line into the spike. By the end of the day, the rotary washing line was leaning over more than the Tower of Pisa leans. The instructions do advise that a proper hole is dug, and concrete is used in the hole.My second use of the rotary washing line was after the hole that I had made was partially filled in with the spike, and the remainder of the hole with cement. Perfect. It’s not essential to do this, and naturally if you want to move the clothes line to different positions within the garden, this wouldn’t work. It’s easy to buy ready made cement – and a small bag costing just a few pounds will suffice for this. The well known DIY stores sell ready made cement (unless you wish to make your own cement).Opening it out is fine, and there are several different heights which may be used. I used the highest one of all – not because I’m so tall, but because I want all my washing well off the ground. There is a handle to use, which is sturdy, and gives a good solid feel when opening the rotary washing line.Once opened, it’s time to use the tension – which is just one (large) clip to flick over. So often with rotary washing line, the lines lose the tension, whereas with this one from Leifheitt will be good for many years to come.Closing it is an art I think with any rotary washing line – my arms never seem long enough to ‘click’ on the catch to reduce the height, and then to slowly allow the clothes line to retract into the arms of the rotary washing line.Taking out the rotary washing line when finished is fine – so mowing the lawn, storing it in the garage over the winter isn’t an issue at all.Overall, it’s good. Yes, it is expensive, and there are many other rotary washing lines available at a much lower price. If you want quality though, you usually do have to pay a little more, which includes Leifheit.

Well, my wife nearly fell off the chair when this was delivered to the door, it's so HUGE!, absolutely huge! I had trouble getting it through the door and into the garden.I knew at once that it was going to be a quality piece of merchandise simply from the weight, and that's exactly how it turned out to be. It's a wonderfully useful and welcome item. The only downside is that it is so big and heavy that it WILL NOT stand unsupported in a garden with a lawn spike without the additional assistance of some concrete, fortunately I had some left over from another job and it was dry and as hard as a rock withing twenty four hours. But what of the device itself?Well, the amount of line provided is generous in the extreme,we have a large family and my wife got the entire load of one family wash on the thing, which was rather nice and convenient. One of the best features is an 'easy lift' handle which provides stability and support when folding up the mechanism after use like an umbrella, this is of enormous help due to the sheer size and weight of it and it closes like a dream. My wife, being a small lady, has always had trouble reaching the various washing lines over the years so you can imagine her delight when she found that this has seven adjustable height positions, no more stretching for her, now she can place the clothes out to dry without any discomfort whatsoever. It also has the added bonus of preventing longer clothes from trailing on the ground as they dry.The item's size also gives ample room for simply tons of washing to be dried in one go, we are a large family and there was still space on the lines to fit more items of clothing. The mechanism seems to have been designed with aerodynamics in mind as it catches the wind very easily and turns just as well and quickly. This gives faster drying time at absolutely no cost energy-wise. The machine may seem a little pricey on first view but it's worth it';s weight in gold as it will pay for itself and actually save the user money in the long run. We don't have to pay for wind power (at least not yet)and this item maximises the use of that unlimited energy source beautifully. This item really is the business. It will save uses time, hassle and, more importantly, money in the long run and I cannot recommend it enough. So, what are you all waiting for? Buy this and remove all the messing around of domestic washing.

Of all the rotary driers we have used over the years, this offers the best combination of excellent build quality, ease of opening/closing, line length and overall size not so large as to be a problem in our modest garden. The drying area is however more than enough for our family washes. The Leifhet is quite light and therefore easy to carry if, like us, you want to temporarily remove it for grass cutting. It comes with a plastic base that is designed to be surrounded with concrete but we have previously tried to simply bury the standard supplied Leifheit base beneath the lawn without any concrete. It want a long term success when the ground became saturated with water so followed Liefhelt's recommendations and bought their recommended screw in base (sold separately) which has proven ideal. We have found that the Linomatic range will not fit our other existing 50mm bases so it seems that you are really are better using one of Leifheit's dedicated base units The one issue that we noted with the supplied base is that it sits proud of the ground to the extent that you will have to mow/string around them. Alternatively you wil have to set the top of the base lower than the surrounding grass level. The airer itself is very easy to use with a grab handle helping in raising the arms which can be set to different heights, a pleasingly helpful feature. The Linomatic range's unique design feature is that the airer lines retract into the arms when the airer is closed up. Theoretically, this means that the airer lines will be protected and remain clean but we still protectour airers with covers and suspect that most owners of these units will also do the same. The lines remained taught even when heavily loaded and each arm has a couple of clothes hooks to allow hangers to be used.Overall, this airer is well built, very easy to use and strikes a very good balance between overall size and drying capacity. A three year guarantee offers reassurance that the perceived quality will be reflected in durability and this is our favourite airer of several used over the last three years. Recommended.

I had been using a slightly smaller, non height variable leifheit line prior to getting this so I knew that one of the great things about this would be that the lines tuck into the body when it's not in use meaning the are protected from the elements. The aluminium arms are great quality and you get a huge amount of space for hanging, easily the five machine loads that are billed.I have this installed in grass and rather than concrete in, which you could, I have bought a leifheit spike to install it; this works well and means the line is well tethered and secure.I was hoping that not having a pull string to raise it like others in the range would be an advantage in this model as I've always found it a faff. This line has a handle you pull and a couple of buttons in the centre, one to select height ( the whole top can go from head height to about waist on a few increments) and one to press when you want to allow it to be folded or unfolded. In practice it's not as intuitive as I thought and is a bit awkward as you have to reach into the middle. I'm not sure the varied height is that necessary for the average user though it does occur to me that it does go to a height a wheelchair user or child would find reachable, unlike traditional lines.Like all in the range, the hanging space is great and I'm sure it will wear well in the elements like my other one did.I would definitely recommend this range as being better than others I have used by far due to the retractable lines and clever features such as holes on the end for hangers. As to whether you need this top of the range of a rolls royce of rotary lines; I'm not sure. The added feature of height variance is not as much of a bonus as I thought, and the lack of pull cord is a slight plus but means it's slightly awkward to unfold. I would probably get whichever is best priced if I were looking to get one of these. The smaller ones might be better for a small garden too. My advice is look at the measurements carefully and only buy this one if height variance is a feature you really need.

Leifheit 85120 60 M/195 ft. Linomatic Plus Rotary Clothes Line for me is the perfect solution to drying my washing, I am just so pleased we have a very large back garden as when fully open the actual rotary dryer does need a lot of space. I have wanted one of these rotary lines for such a long time but with so many to choose from I was never sure which one to pick. I love Leifheit as a company as they have a great history of providing well manufactured products which last which for me is ideal. Where I live is at the base of a mountain and our back garden seems to get a strong wind even on the sunniest day so therefore a rotary drier which was manufactured from superb products was the ideal plus the fact the actual line space is up to 195 ft.which will provide me with more than enough space to dry my washing. The company says this should be enough room for six loads, personally in my own opinion it would depend on what the contents of the washing are, but this guideline gives customers a rough idea how much space is available within the rotary dryer. One thing I do love about this dryer was that I like to change all beds on one day but before having the rotary dryer I would have had to dry each set of sheets separately, I can honestly say I was able to dry the three sets which included one king size set, one double plus a single size set of sheets and all three sets had adequate room to dry properly and thoroughly without having to finish them off in the electric tumble dryer. The plus for me with using this particular model is that it has seven height levels which are roughly in-between the measurements of 135 and 175cms according to the manufacturer. Why I like this model is that I am tall but if my sister wants to hang clothes when she visits the dryer can be lowered to suit her short stature. I like to put the line up at the highest for drying the clothes as it does seem to get more wind power and therefore dry's the clothes quicker which suits me.I found it easy to erect as I used this actual aid

This is a big, big rotary dryer, for medium to large gardens, and for families with a lot of washing. As it rotates, the arms will sweep out a circle 3.28 metres in diameter. Its many lines (50 metres total) will hold 4-5 machine loads at once. The plus point is that when you fold up the dryer, all the lines retract into the arms, so they stay clean and untangled. Don't underestimate the job of installing it. You are going to have to dig a hole, and set a couple of buckets of cement in it with the dryer's socket accurately upright -- maybe a job for your local handyman. Alternatively, you can buy a Leifheit socket that screws into the ground. I've got one of those, and that takes a good deal of strength and skill to get it in perfectly vertical.Once placed in the socket, the dryer stands tall in aluminium and strong green plastic. I don't think it needs a cover. You can try different height settings, so that people of different heights can open and close the dryer and peg out the washing comfortably. To open the arms, you pull down on a handle on one arm, but I found that it was necessary to give another arm a shove to get started. After that push, erection is easy, and a little lever locks the dryer in the up position. You will need pegs that close fully, as the lines are thin nylon cord. The dryer rotates smoothly as the wind blows, and when you have finished, you flip the lock open, and push up on the handle to close. You can't leave any pegs on the lines. It's going to stay out all summer and early autumn, then I'll set it to its lowest position, haul it into the garden shed for the winter and close the cap on the socket.

This is a large and good quality washing line by a well respected manufacturer. It is supplied fully assembled and includes a sleeve suitable for setting into concrete and an instruction sheet. With a line this size it is definitely preferable to set it into concrete but I found my well established ground spike was just about OK although it did show some signs of movement so I may have to replace it at some point. Note that the pole width is 50cm so only the largest spikes and fixings will be suitable. There is no cover supplied and this was too large to be able to use my existing oneThere is no cover supplied and the washing line was too large to be able to use my existing one, however Linomatic system where the lines retract into the supports, stopping them flapping around and keeping them clean made this less critical although I will probably get one at some point. There is a handle on one of the arms to make it easier to open and the height adjustment is also useful able to adjust through seven height levels between 135 and 175cm. The tension is also adjustable which is useful when drying large items such as sheetsI have tested the 50m model and this is plenty large enough for most. There is also a larger 60m model available although current amazon pricing does not make sense with the 50m model costing £150 while the larger 60m model is £130. This is a lot of money for a rotary close line, even for one of this quality however it is well designed and looks like it will last a long time.

We’ve been through a number of rotary clothes lines, including a couple of Leifheits (our children come and steal them). This is one of the best.Linomatic models do a very clever job of containing the lines, to keep them clean. The handle on the arm of this one makes it easier to open than models with a cord to pull, and the height adjustment is very welcome. Our 12-year-old Leifheit is still in use by one of the children. It looks and works almost like new. I therefore have high expectations of this latest one and so far have no reason to doubt its quality. There seems a pricing anomaly at the moment, with the 50m model costing £151 and the 60m model £130. £151 is too much for the 50m model.I’m going to award just 4 stars, as a result, but if the price comes down to less than £130 it’s well worth 5.PS The supplied ground spike is easy enough to install and keep well-hidden. Dig a hole in the lawn about 200mm across, then set the spike in the middle, the top roughly flush with the lawn. Prop it with a couple of stones, if you like. Stand the dryer in the socket and have someone hold it while you check it’s vertical. Fill the hole with dry fence post setting concrete (from a DIY shed) to within 25mm or so of the top. You probably won’t need to add water – it will be drawn in from the soil. Carefully remove the dryer from the socket. When the concrete has set, after a couple of hours, you can add soil or turf above the concrete, so only the top of the spike is seen.

So, I had a choice of the 40m, 50m or 60m rotary drier. The difference in price was negligible so the 60m version seemed the obvious choice.Delivery of the item was the first clue - it was significantly taller than me! I decided to buy the ground spike that goes with this drier and I'd recommend anyone else do the same. It too is large but simply screws into the ground. The drier then slots into this when needed and can be removed and stored away when not.The quality of this line is very very good indeed and really shows where the money was spent on making it. Our first use of this line was just after we'd moved house and had accumulated a mass of washing, around 6 loads in total. This washing line held between 4 and 5 loads when full. This is a serious amount of clothing. We hadn't realised the number of pegs so much washing would use! Without this line we would still be catching up on washing now, 3 weeks after moving in.If you are after a rotary drier, and want a very well made, and large clothing area this is the one for you. I cannot fault the design, build quality easy of getting this drier in and out the spike. The only downside is the sheer size of it when stored, it is really really tall. But this is more my problem for not appreciating the size. Otherwise this is a fantastic item and while expensive, does exactly what you want a rotary drier to do. All I need now is a few more washing machines and I can start my own laundrette!

This must just be an interim report at this stage, as although I have bought the concrete mix to fix this into the ground, ongoing sub-zero temperatures have prevented me from fixing it as yet.As our current clothes dryer is fixed permanently into the ground, I do like the way this one is designed, which allows it to be lifted out of the plastic socket so it can be brought in during poor weather or if you don't want it spoiling the appearance of the lawn. The one less obviously good aspect of this device, however, is its use of a nylon cord instead of more conventional, wider diameter clothes line. I will be surprised if it doesn't leave a sharper crease where clothes have been hung over the line, and normal clothes pegs will grip the line much less firmly, if at all, depending on the thickness of the clothes.Much of the engineering of this product is dedicated to keeping the lines covered when the device is folded up. I can't say that keeping the lines clean has been a major problem in the past, but everything helps. I particularly like the hops designed to facilitate hanging clothes on clothes hangers, which may be the best way to dry some clothes - shorts, jackets - while not creasing them.I'm looking forward to better weather and the chance to try this out - and will update this report them on the basis of my - and perhaps more relevantly, my wife's - experience.

This is a quality item that arrives in a lot of packaging that takes ages to open, but for how much this costs, I'd expect robust packaging. This is also very tall and once in our porch, had to be manoeuvred careful into our house.Ideally, two people are needed to transport this and get it set up. We found this easy to get into the ground, as our existing rotary line is embedded in our patio, and all we needed to do was remove it, remove the packing from the gap, dig down (this needed another 6 inches depth), insert the plastic spike, force it in, and pack a tiny bit. The pole is around 2cm bigger in diameter than our own 40m line, so it's around 5cm in diameter, and allowances will need to be made for this when considering purchasing.I currently have an injury to my back, but the folding mechanism is so smooth and easy to handle and operate, that I have no trouble folding this up. It can be adjusted easily to different heights, which is brilliant for when I want to hang sheets on it. My washer does a 9kg dry load, and this easily takes 3 loads without trouble, without drying being affected and without any wobbling.Great item, easy to install, use and the closing/opening mechanism can be operated single-handed - it's the 'upmarket German car' of washing lines.

The line arrived without delay, however on attempting to open it for the first time it would only partially open. The instructions did indeed mention that the lines operate by means of weights & that it should only be transported & stored upright (obviously the weights became tangled in transit). The instruction leaflet gave details of the UK product support as being Cachet Homewares Ltd. from Sussex. I tried calling this number for some suggestions as to how best to rectify problem but it was unobtainable. Research on the internet suggested that this company no longer traded. I then made an unsuccessful search for customer support from Leifheit itself. No joy there also from various lines of approach.I then Googled companies which sold this product, & I found a company in Bristol, and on giving my tale of woe, the man who answered my call knew the product & was extremely helpful. I managed to free the tangled weights after several minutes of shaking & opening / closing the line as far as it would go. I bought this probuct because I believed it to be quality - which I am sure that it is. I was however disappointed by the non existent level of manufacturer support.

As several of the other reviewers have also noted: I didn't realise quite how ginormous this rotary clothes airer would be. It is very large indeed, which made putting it up rather a challenge but means that it can hold several loads of washing at once, which is wonderful considering that the British weather means there's approximately one suitable clothes-drying day per three weeks! The manufacturers of this product are a German company (the instructions are authentically provided in that language), and this really is a BMW of a clothes dryer. The poles are made from rust-proof aluminium, and the lines retract right into them, thus avoiding dirt issues arising from passing birds etc.!There are special hooks for clothes hangers, and the height is adjustable so that it is suitable for use by persons of (almost) all statures and washing of (almost) all lengths. The entire thing is very sturdy indeed and I am confident it will withstand the wild Welsh coastal winds.Unless you already have a suitable hole in concrete in which to place a rotary dryer then I would recommend the purchase of one of these

The Leifheit Linomatic Rotary Washing Line (This one is the 500 Plus) is a superbly designed and made rotary washing line that is very easy to use, and takes an absolute ton of washing.Once installed, you can either cement in the supplied ground socket, or buy one that screws into your lawn ... I did the latter, and it was a tough old business to get it in, and get it straight (forget it if you have stoney or heavy soil ... I actually broke one). I think that if you can live with cementing the supplied socket in ... that would be the best option.Once done tho, the 500 plus is very easy to put up, even one handed, and because the line retracts back into the the arms, the line should be clean each time. All aluminium construction means that it should last for years, just as well, as this is an expensive buy ... you can buy much cheaper, and I have done in the past, you to a certain extent, you get what you pay for, and I can certainly see this lasting at least 10 years.
