When my children of 5-6 years of age first saw the packaging they were very excited and upon opening the pack were both excited to have the set built. All the books are numbered; I began with building the mobile dumper truck and drone set. My 6 year old boy helped build this part of the set as it was rather simple, but as soon as these parts were built he was off playing with them and no longer interested in helping me build the other parts of the set, as to be expected!Next I moved onto building the digger, the instructions were very straight forward, it was a little fiddly building the tracks for the vehicle and took a little time, I will say that it appears from the instruction that you should use all 42 parts of the track for each side, but this results in the tracks being quiet ‘baggy’ either side, so kept falling off when my children began playing with it. I simply removed 2 of the track sections either side and this resolved the problem.I then moved onto building the mobile research center, again very simple easy to follow instructions, no complaints here. The trailers sides open up to reveal a research lab.The Volcano part was a rather tricky section for me to build, it took me some time to get my head around the instructions, but once clear it became fairly easy to build. The volcano has a little lever built in so the volcano can ‘erupt’.Overall when the set is built it is quite impressive. It took me just under 2.5 hours to build. The vehicles are fairly sturdy when constructed; the only thing I have to keep fixing is the digger module as this keeps coming away from the base tracks. Each part has a different LEGO character with it to perform the different research roles. Overall the kids love it and after showing them how the set works have been playing happily with it. Good value for money and great imagination once again from LEGO.I would definitely recommend.

It's been a fair few years since I unboxed a Lego set, let alone one as large and elaborate as this. While the magic and quality interlocking brick system have remained the same, a few things have changed and mainly for the better. After recovering from stepping on a few pieces, I got my prepared to remind my fingers how to assemble something like this. This set itself is comprised of a number of different elements, allowing flexibility in play options and assembly over time - rather than one big piece. Big is also the way I'd describe several of the individual elements - the volcano, truck and drill are all large items in themselves and once created have interactive elements and numerous play opportunities. Each, plus the smaller cart, drone and stand are in separate bag to reduce time spent hunting around with a brick separator provided for when you go wrong. Six charming mini figures finish off the set (including the much demanded female scientists) making up the 800+ pieces you can follow the well written instructions or ignore for hours of fun. While a number of things may have changed in assembly, colours and themes (I'm still not entirely convinced this belongs in the city), for me the supremacy of Lego in construction toys clearly remains. This set is no exception and hence from me comes highly recommended - if you like the look of it, then it's almost definitely better than it looks.

This is a good Lego set. Has a couple of really good sized vehicles, the main one being a big truck, and a trailer big enough to fit a few mini figures in it, it's pretty chunky, and very popular with my sons. Also popular is the huge mobile drill - I really like this vehicle, great caterpiller tracks, and very sturdy drilling arm. It looks great, and again has great playability for the kids.In addition there is a good volcano, and a wee dumper truck to scoot around with as well. All in all, it's a very good set, but I'm holding back from 5 stars, as I'm not sure it's great value. At this price, the other sets I've bought that it competes with are the fire station and police station, both of which are superb sets, loads of lego, the design of which is absolutely top class - I don't think that this falls into the same category - so given it costs about the same, I'm going for 4 start.

This is a great set with lots of detail, variety and scope for imaginative play. The inclusion of a 'drone' to inspect the volcano is a particularly nice touch! These sets are quite similar to the Arctic Explorer sets of a couple of years back but with the inclusion of more digger like vehicles. All of the recent lego sets that I've build (ahem... with my daughter... mostly) have really well thought out instructions specifically tailored for the target age. Each major feature (e.g. the digger) comes with its own instructions and the parts are in mulitple bags whose number correspond to the particular component you are building - in other words you won't be confronted with one huge pile of bricks, even in a very large set.I'd say the age guidance is about right, and as with most lego beyond Duplo there really isn't an upper age limit!

A substantial set of Lego, presented in a big bright box, a great gift to give any child. It was nice to see my 7 year old nephew getting stuck in to what I consider to be good old fashioned playing, where your imagination is stimulated, instead of the one track route that video games take youngsters down. It took him around 90 minutes to build the set using the comprehensive instruction booklet, and it was an impressive set up once he had finished it.Initially I thought that the rrp was a little expensive for a set of Lego, but I'm old school, and when I was his age, Lego was never considered to be an expensive toy. But considering like for like, and the cost of video games,I conceded that it was value for money. So, an item I'd be happy to give as a gift, and if I were a youngster, one I'd delight in receiving.

There is so much to explore within this amazing LEGO set.It was destined to be a Christmas gift for a 10-year old LEGO aficionado/obsessive, so the challenge was to find him something that he didn’t already have.It was hard to resist opening the packaging to have a peek – LEGO has moved so far since I was a child. I loved that this set contains two scientists as well as workers and adventurers. I really like that the set also has vehicles and tools and I particularly like the volcano. There is plenty to keep an active imagination busy for many hours.Needless to say, my thank you note told me it was his second favourite Christmas present (how could I compete with an electric guitar and amp?!),and his mum has reported that the set has been happily absorbed into his massive LEGO collection.

We had a lot of fun building this and then playing with it. It's interesting and innovative and both children (a boy and a girl) enjoyed assembling and playing with it. Although the age range says 8-12, it's probably better towards the mid and older range of child. There are some parts of the putting together that will require a longer attention span and concentration.that might lead to frustration and impatience. Adult help will probably be appreciated on the sidelines. As with all Lego toys it will stand the test of time and be a great inspiration to further play and invention and well worth the money if a long term view is taken. There are some very small pieces,so beware if the family also involves a baby or a toddler.

The kids enjoyed playing with this Lego set. The exploding volcano is great fun when its assembled. Its an big box of lego with lots of different smaller builds to tackle. This meant two kids could build a bit each (the Volcano and lava are quite complex but a 5 year old happily tackled the tracks.) As its lego there were hours of fun in one box assembling the various bits; then playing with it, then destroying it and making a mess. Its a great Lego design and the lava bombs in particular had intricate detail to the parts.

Lego is a quality 'toy'. It is constructive, educational and imaginative. It is a great alternative to the PS4 or the Xbox or TV. It gets your child thinking, following instructions concentrating in order to build. This is another great Lego set. Plenty of things to build n this set. Plenty of moving parts. It took my 8 year old a good few hours to build and he will spend plenty more hours playing with it. Highly recommended.

It's expensive but you get so much!Lots of little neat touches as well, like there being a diamond in the ball of lava, awsome little male and female role models, tiny walkie talkie, a camera on the drone.. & many more.So much fun!

Excellent value! My 7 and 9 year old build it in a day but they are avid 'Lego-ers'. Very satisfied with the purchase.
