This set was a disappointment. There were a number of times when putting this together when I scratched my head and asked, "why?"Having put it together, I'd say a reasonable price for this set (compared to other LEGO brand sets) is about $75.This set includes 841 pieces spread out between 5 bags. The minifigures are also separated between the bags which speeds building time. What you can't tell from the box is that this set is actually 4 separate parts - the throne, the bridge, and two small platforms.BUILDING TIPS:Sections of this set are very weak until all the bricks are placed on it. I'd recommend using a hard, flat, level surface. Also, this set makes use of black, dark brown, and brown bricks.A desk lamp and a good pair of eyes are a must, it can be very hard to distinguish between the three in the instructions. The three instruction books come packaged with a sheet of cardboard, no paperweights are required.BONUS:This set includes an orange brick separator.MINIFIGURES:This set contains 8 minifigures, including the Goblin King, two Goblin Soldiers, a Goblin Scribe (has small legs instead of full), three dwarfs (Ori, Nori, and Dori), and Gandalf the Grey. The dwarfs have small legs. Ori (brown hair) has a grey cape and a purple shirt, and has a battleaxe, Nori (ginger hair) wears a brown shirt and has a sword and a club. Dori (grey hair) wears a red shirt and a red cape, and is equipped with a sword and a flail. Gandalf has a staff and a sword. One of the goblins has a scimitar, the other has a bone axe. The scribe has a book.DECORATIONS:Part of the reason this set had me scratching my head was because of all the random decorations (some loose) tossed in. I write tossed in because the normal way LEGO instructs its builders to construct sets are from the bottom up; this set (especially around the throne) has the builder putting bricks and items down after the main structure is completed in hard to reach places. It's as if the designer looked at the area afterwards and thought, "There's too much empty space, fill it with stuff!"This set includes a sheet of stickers. The stickers are mostly rectangular and small. There is one large sticker on the back of the throne that was a pain. There are quite a few sculls, bones, and teeth along with an anchor, and several spears.PLAY FEATURES:This set includes a catapult on a turret, a trap cage (pull a lever and a cage tips out the side of the throne), a collapsible rope bridge, a ladder on a section of movable wall (push the wall out and the ladder topples). Also included is a basket crane, wind a chain and the basket raises. The crane also swivels. Underneath the throne us a bucket with some gems on a slide. After the dwarfs are successful defeating the Goblin King, they can loot his throne.FINAL THOUGHTS:Once again, from a LEGO fan's perspective, this set was a disappointment. I've come to expect much more from the $99 sets. Unless you have a compelling reason to buy this set, I'd recommend using your money on a different one.

The large Goblin King is the ugliest Lego figure ever, but the rest of the minifigures are nice with lots of fun little details with their hair or weapons. They all have two facial expressions to choose from, except Gandalf, who only has one. This set comes with a little bucket with a handle that I have never seen before, I am a huge Lego fan and I love acquiring new pieces like this. It also came with an anchor like piece, a book, some bones, some little yellow crystals and a barrel (I will post a picture). The instruction booklets are in a plastic bag with the cardboard sheet so they don't bend in the box. The stickers that you apply are made out of a plastic material instead of paper, which I prefer because then your stickers don't show any wear when the pieces are frequently played with.My usual rule of thumb is the set should cost 10% of the number of pieces, there are 841 pieces so that would be $84, but the MSRP is $99.99. Maybe inflation is going to prove my rule of thumb inadequate when buying Lego's soon or the cost of licensing caused this set to be more expensive. Either way I still don't feel this set is worth the $99.99, there is not even any larger pieces justify that higher cost, it does not even come with any baseplates.I let my 4 and six year old play with it and it was just too fragile, I definitely think that the 9 - 14 age range is appropriate.

This product is definitely one of Lego's best Hobbit sets. It is full of special functions like a breaking bridge and latter, hidden treasure and a moveable scribe's chair/bucket/thing. If you've seen the movies, then you know what I'm talking about. The set also includes a full sized Goblin king, with posable arms and hands. This set utilizes many minifigures, and it is not hard to create cool battle scenes, without having minifigures that have no purpose. Even though caging one of the minifigures (I choose Ori the most because he is more timid and less battle ready) seemingly puts them out of the game, he is still a part of the set and has a purpose. As with most lego LotR and Hobbit sets, this set perfectly epitomizes the Goblin Town we see in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Looking at it, I am just feeling the scrappiness. However, the build is still structurally sound and built for play. Also, the build comes in four seperate chunks, making the build seem larger or smaller based on how you position it. This also allows for versitality and diversity in the set. It took me a little over an hour to build this set and would recommend ages 8+. Even though the price is high because Lego no longer makes this set, it is worth the expense.

Let me start of by saying this set is four pieces. The throne is the largest piece followed by the bridge and then the two sections on the right of the throne. I got this set on sale for $60 but it is worth $100.Throne: the throne is really cool. The Goblin King fits perfectly on his throne and the secret goblin treasure pushes out from under it. The bridge is cool and there is two functions included. You can collapse the bridge and send the ladder tumbling. The cooking pot is pretty cool (I filled it with extra bones and a skull). There is also a small catapult and a cage. Overall, the whole set looks eerie just like it should. The skulls and bones all around give it a evil-like feel. The set comes with three goblins who are much cooler than the Urk-hai. Two are warriors and the last is the goblin scribe who flies around in his barrel. (He has the short legs). Dori, Nori, and Ori come with this set exclusively along with all the goblins and their king. Gandalf comes with a sword and staff. Good set.

I have just gotten back into LEGOs since Christmas and bought this set as it went on sale on Amazon. I absolutely love this set! I must agree with the other reviews that I am not completely sold on builds that have the "platform" or "island" type dioramas... however, the sheer size and density of this set is outstanding and gives your collection a LOT of bits and pieces that you might have a hard time otherwise getting. You get a slew of minifigs, so much that is what pretty much enticed me to begin with. The Goblin King and 3 lackies are unique and figs you can use when building fantasy/castle themes later on. I love all the brown pieces, plates, bones and skulls in this.I plan on using these to create other structures and buildings after having buit the main model. That's what LEGOs are all about... creating what you want and using everything you have to bring your creativity more detail.

Having read the books, and seen the movies, I have to say this set really captures the whimsical essence of The Hobbit. The amount of characters and accessories in the set is great. The Goblin King looks terrific, I especially like that he is so unique. He's not just a recast of the troll from Moria. The little details of the set really add to its overall character. I really wanted to give this five stars, but I couldn't, here's why; Lego needs to stop providing stickers to add detail to their sets. The details should for the most part come from the design of the set, and unique pieces. Stickers never come out right, and they make the building experience less fun. Also,I wasn't thrilled that the set doesn't really connect together. I'm delighted that the sections separate, but they should also connect to each other to make a continuous set. That being said, all in all, this is a great set.

My hubby who loves both Legos and LOTR was jazzed about this gift. He use to have a tub full of legos, but sold it after college, and has regretted it ever since. I got this as a gift for him so he can restart his Lego collection. The set itself is not very large, it took him about 2 1/2 hrs to build. This set has lots of weird pieces like "skulls," sharp bones, and of couse the Goblin King. My husband like werido things and this was up his alley. I think the detail pieces, like a book that opens, little jewels, etc are really niece touches. I would really recommend this set to any kid at heart. The only thing that bummed me out was the price, I ended up paying $25 more here on Amazon, and then less 2 weeks later, it decreased in price.

I allowed my late teen daughters pick which lego set and they chose this one. We normally get a lego set for New Years Eve to put together to kill time till midnight, but with the COVID-19 crap, I hoped that this would hold their bored teenage attention for a couple of days. This is a pretty good build, but I'm not sure it was worth the cost that we purchased it for. However, it did entertain and provide a nice distraction for a little, while. I would advise anyone to look at the Star Wars lego sets, as they provide hours to days of entertainment, for around the same amount of money. Anyway, stay safe and healthy. Blessings and shade to all.

This is an awesome set. I got this for my 7 year old girl who has begun to love Legos. It's rated for ages 9-14, so unless your child has a great amount of patience and maturity, do not order for a younger age. This set has many tiny pieces. That said, my 7 year old LOVES it. She's spent hours sitting and putting it together. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. The parts are easily arranged and easy to identify. We've almost got the whole thing put together by now, and it looks SO COOL. If you love Legos, and you love cool things, and you want to sit with your child and do it together, this is the set for you. I would buy again.

I gave it this rating because it has a lot of really small pieces that are easy to overlook when reading the instructions. It takes a long time to put it together. Other than that, it's great! It's realistic. The characters are ugly enough to be real. It comes with a lot of extra weapons. It's just an awesome set!I would recommend this to everyone who likes Legos and the Hobbit. I would NOT recommend this for children under 8 due to the myriad of tiny pieces. My 14-year-old was given this set for his birthday. This review was dictated by him. He was very skilled at Lego sets above his age range.

10.8.2015

This set is EPIC! The minifigures Dori, Nori, Ori, and Gandalf are so cute! The Goblin King and his mini army are cool, as well. I just love all the details put into every character and the background pieces. The Goblin King's throne looks very much like it does in the movie, and the collapsing bridge is great.Dori's and Nori's weapons are perfect. The only thing "missing" is a slingshot for Ori (but check his back pocket!) I was actually able to make a makeshift slingshot using extra pieces. Overall, a perfect 5-stars!!

My son ordered this set, and the item was received very quickly. He loves Lego toys. He is 14 years old, and still enjoys putting together every new set. Lord of the Rings is the latest for him. Legos are of great quality, they are durable, they have different items according the kids/teen ages, and they help kids use their imagination while playing. Legos also keep up the brain working while kids put the sets together. Highly recommended.

20.5.2013

As with all other kits, my sons loved it and put it together immediately. I now find the Hobbit King's fist implanted in the flesh of my heel after stepping on it in the dark. The next big thing is a lego vacuum / sorter, just like the old egg sorting machines. It needs to be backpack style to pick up all 4,823 pieces lying on my floor, and my stairs, and under the covers of my bed, and falling into the toilet bowl (true but gross story).

16.2.2015

I enjoy the set, however it does have one major issue that needs to be addressed. The platform and main play area is separated into 4 or 5 sections and they are not connectable in any way. So you have to keep them together by just mashing them close together. Which is fine for people who would like to display the set, but would not be ideal for play. Other than that the set is fantastic, great figures and loads of detail.

I purchased this for my nephew for his xmas/birthday present. If it was not his birthday then it would have been ridiculously expensive, like ALL lego's to buy as one gift for a child (or anybody for that matter). Hate that lego's are that expensive. Even when my own kids, 30 years ago, were small they were expensive. Hopefully I can sell all their lego's for what we paid for them back then!
