What an incredibly fun, challenging build this was!Directions were extremely clear - at no point did I feel I was flying blind. When things didn't work or fit, it was inevitably my mistake. Figuring out those mistakes was part of the fun. Mid-build Bluetooth motor testing went perfectly. I had a couple of issues with a previously-connected power pack having problems reconnecting, but that was because I exited, but did not terminate, the Connect Plus app. It was easily fixed by taking out a battery and, essentially, rebooting the pack. When all was done, the last test - the moving of the scoop front to back - failed. I heard the ending purring perfectly, but the gears and scoop did not move.I figured out that I didn't put one key dowel into the red motor input (I accidentally put it in a hole just to the side), and with very little deconstruction got it in the right spot. That didn't end the problems - the hinges that connect the front scoop panel to the motor/gears were connected wrongly. After about an hour of trial and error, I finally got everything in the right spot, successfully calibrated the unit, and I was off to the races.I hope this doesn't sound like a criticism of the set - as I said, every error was my own fault, and it was a sick kind of fun figuring out every which way I went wrong. When the unit finally worked perfectly, it was incredibly gratifying. I will say the Bag # 5 set of parts (the last stage of construction) was a little tedious - lots of ladders, lights, trim, but I do have to say the once it was done (after about 90 minutes of work), all these little bits added up to a better-looking, more realistic excavator. I haven't played much with the set other than to test out what it can do, but that will come, now that I finally worked out the bugs. Bottom line: I absolutely LOVED this build. It required a level of focus and attention to detail that I found very, very rewarding. This takes the place of the Roller Coaster (10261) as my favorite build. I can't recommend this any higher!

I thought i'd write this review just in case anyone was having a similar issue with connecting to the hubs. I've seen some feedback saying it could be the wrong motor, the app or bluetooth connectivity. I couldn't find the solution for my connectivity issues, so i thought i'd share what I've experienced.I've just completed stage 1 of the build (the base section) at which point the instruction manual (on pg234) asks you to test the hub connection using the control plus app. I then downloaded the app and began testing the hub. I found the app not intuitive to use as it wanted me to connect to the upper hub which I hadn't progressed to at this point. I tried various things to get to the lower section, but the app simply wouldn't allow testing on the base section. I tried to reach out to Lego via email, but apparently its fairly long wait to hear back from them ~11days.So what I've done is to take out all remaining motors and hub and connect those up (randomly). Please see the photos I've attached. Then I've gone back into the app and gone through connection testing. It asks you again to connect to the upper hub first and then you can see which motors are in the wrong ports. After correcting, it instructs you to turn on the lower hub at which point it shows connected to both hubs. It then went through 2 firmware updates for the upper and then the lower hub. After which it goes through a calibration mode. At this point I stopped the port testing as everything seemed to work fine.Bottom line for me is the app doesn't work very well, but hopefully the rest of the build goes ok. Good luck to the rest of you!

Build was pleasant and individual module builds went together easily without needing 4 hands and/or extreme finger gymnastics during assembly of those. Building instructions are clear and easy to follow, however I personally feel that full pages for installing or pushing just a single or pair of pins is a bit overkill especially with all the colors used for pins these days for visual assembly aids.Finished model is pretty robust for its weight. Control+ app works good in conjunction with this model and it is fun to operate. The Cons I see from my side are:No B model, sadly that is a tendency with new LEGO technic models even with the high price large set Technic models. Is LEGO moving the technic line to the build once and then put it in a showcase type of customer? In that case might as well remove all the electric functions since some handcranks will suffice for a showcase. Powered up still very rough around the edges even after having been introduced over 3 years ago. Still no rechargeable Li-Ion battery modules for any of the powered-up hubs available to date from LEGOPoorly documented Powered-Up app especially on the code block level. Missing legacy support for previous Power functions motors, servos & lights. IMO it should be possible for LEGO to make an adapter for bang-bang control of the older PF peripherals with the Pwr-Up hubs.My cripes with missing B-Model and Pwr-Up resulted in a reduced rating for an otherwise great model.

When I seen this kit available I immediately knew this was a special build. The size of the finished model is very impressive and the controls are easy to use.Starting the built with the tracks and base with the motors I found the 1st bag contained a lot of peices. This could have been split up in to smaller bags to save the hours of sorting before the build starts. Bags number 2 is the main body of the It's the same with this, larger number of peices that could have been broken down in to smaller bags. Bags 3 build the main boom arm and bucket functions with the remaining bags 4, and 5 for detailing. This monster of a build has 7 motors and 2 smart hubs that connect to a smart device for pin point controls. While building this kit the instructions ask to test the hub as your building. I found that the app would not connect to the hub if all connections were connected. This was frustrating with the 2nd hub but after figuring out to plug all motors in for the test then it connects fine. I have had issues with the tracked hub where it would get "stuck on" even after closing the control + app and I've had to reset the hub by holding the button for 10secs. The control + app is very easy to use and the one touch, and programmable functionality is really good fun. I would highly recommend this kit for everyone and being a 30 something adult there is nothing like digging up large amount of lego

This is by far the most satisfying build of all the Lego kits I've assembled in my life time. The final model is sturdy, and feels very solid, such that you are not afraid to pick it up and move it around- no loose pieces falling off when operational. There is plenty of detailing on the excavator, from cockpit controls (barely visible), to rubber hydraulic hoses, and lots of railings, and nicely made cooling fan blades (again barely visible), doors that open to reveal the hydraulic pumps, and many other details that make this model so realistic. After reading reviews from Lego suggesting that you should NOT test the electronics until all motors and hubs are completely connected was a truism, because nothing will happen if one tries to run the tests that are suggested in the manual. And it was rather scary waiting so far into the build to see if anything worked, but everything did spring to life at the end of assembly. The cell phone control app. was also quite amazing in how many ways it gives you to control the model. The movements from all seven motors was smooth and gave realistic actions. This was in a whole new class of Legos! I can hardly wait to see what the future brings in this type of complex, remote controllable, realistic, solid, robotic devices. This was a really fun kit to assemble, and also, plenty of fun to operate. Enjoy the journey!

The build is not the most pieces of any set, nor is it the most complex, there were no real problems building it and it was pretty straightforward. The only problem I had was solved when it turns out you ned to have all motors connected to the second hub to test it. This is not in the instructions, but calling support they are aware of it and just plugging the motors in will allow you to test part two.The thing is pretty heavy, the bag of 100 "rocks" is a good touch and it is how the LEGO group is able to claim that this is the largest set by piece count. Those pieces are not in the model unlike the rough terrain crane so I don't count them. When playing with it, make sure to stow the steps and lock them in place,I did not do that originally and caught it in the carpet. The controls are well explained and the app works fine on my phone. The model is very smooth compared to most power functions sets as there are not a lot of complex gears in the boom. The boom and bucket are all moved by linear actuators. The new longer linear actuator is soing to be something to play with in the future. All in all, a nice build, fun and heavy. Lots of replay value. Most of the expense is in the electronics and the license I suspect. But it is really fun to play with.

First of all this set is not that “technic” compared to some of the “groundbreaking” flag ship sets. One thing I really need to give credit to is the play experience. Honestly Id rather have a set that’s ok interesting to build and works great after built( especially for sets with power functions ) than a set that has a fancy gear box and long drive trains but doesn’t work as smooth as you would expect. This is something that I always had complaints about technic sets. The Arocs is probably the only set that’s satisfying to build as well as to play with. (Highly recommend this set) So in terms of play experience this set really does a great job, everything works really smoothly(thanks to the short drive trains).APP works good as well. The only minor issue with the set is driving. The motors for the tracks is a little bit on the weak side. While on a perfectly flat surface it works great. When on a slightly rougher surface turning is almost impossible as it can no longer handle the torque without triggering the new clutch. A bit disappointed but none the less a fantastic set.

This was really enjoyable personally, as it was interesting to see the parallels between the Lego product and the real thing (I had the displeasure of working on the machines for a short while), and really cool to watch the gearing come together. The only two points of improvement would be:1. Add in an additional 1x8 black straight line piece. This can sit at the base where the hydraulic cables curve in from the boom, and can replicate a very similar black (or just greasy) rubber piece that often exists on the real things. That may be a Hitachi or Terex memory, but I think if it is added as a liberty even, it will help clean up those lines.2. My big desired change would be the ability to somehow adjust the track, boom, stick, slew, bucket, etc, positions without batteries. That would no doubt be a whole new engineering challenge however! It would still be nice if the finished product didn't turn to stone unless you have the correct batteries handy :).Really cool product, and as always, I marvel while putting it together!

My first technical LEGO set since the original sets released in the 80s. Apart from one small disappointment, I am a satisfied customer. It's a humongous beast and impressive once built.Being unfamiliar with modern Lego kits I found the hand-holding of the instructions (showing how long the axles are) and colour-coding parts took some of the challenge out. There was one missing piece (out of 4,000, so not too bad), which turned out to be cosmetic and has been ordered from the missing bricks service (which is a brilliant thing to have - I remember as a kid writing letters to customer support). The remote control option worked really well on my Huawei Mate 10 PRO,although an older Nokia could only connect to one of the hubs.I bought this mainly to see how the bluetooth control and the hubs worked, and the only shame is that you can't re-programme the hubs to do things outside the scope of the kit. I'm planning to build other things, so will be downloading a non-LEGO app to make this work.

Let me first say that i like change, in a good way. Lego seems to be advancing pretty fast. It's how a company stays ahead in the game. I do like how they came out with something a little different other than another car or crane (cough* 42082) This set was a little on the high side, the could of dropped it by maybe 100 dollars. I think you are paying for new electronic systems, because the parts are pretty generic and common. The thing i like about the control hubs is that you can pull the battery pack out without removing pins or disassembling the set. I have read other reviews and the most common problem seems to be getting it to connect to Bluetooth. The only advice i can give is to make sure there are no other devices around and you have the latest updates on your device, apple or android, what ever you use. Also try holding your phone close to the model to load the hubs faster.

I absolutely love mine, If you have the money, definitely buy it. However I have some minor inconveniences with the model: the building experience is mediocre, at least for me, there are no complicated gearboxes or any suspension linkages, but it makes up for that in the playability aspect. Also to note; in the one-touch control panel, the arm has a tendency to lose alignment, and you have to consequently recalibrate it. It is also to note the countrol+ app will not allow you to play with the remote functions of the model prior to its completion. All this notwithstanding, this is hands down my favourite lego of my extensive collection of technic. As far as looks and size, it looks even better, and bigger in real life. Lego designer, another absolutely amazing job. 10/10 would recommend.

Good to build - not too difficult.Only had a bit of a problem with the App. Tried to test first part of the the build nothing worked. read the review where all motors needed to be connected for it to work - still nothing. After a while screen came up on App - software update - after this everthing fine. Also software updated for second part of the build. Shame there's no "home" bit of software to put model at a start position - would be a nice starting point - when starting to build up own programs. Or when model first starts up. What would be nice if Lego release a Dump Truck kit to the same scale as the Excavator. Or could have included one in the kit - as was done with the Bucket Wheel Excavator.Missed an oportunity there - buy the Excavator you also buy the Dump Truck????

Probably the best app control experience of any LEGO set I've had, it's really really well done. The model is larger than I thought, and very detailed. Took me 1.5 days of non-stop building to get it finished. I particularly liked the color coded cable management inside the model, that was a nice touch. However, the quality control issues other reviewers have noted also struck me; one of the step 1 bags was split open in the box, and instead of the 4 dark grey gears needed to make the excavator rotate, I got 3 gears and a turquoise 1x3 brick that's not even part of the model. It's a bit annoying that in these cases it can take up to two weeks for LEGO to send you the replacement part.Overall though, this set was everything I wanted, and I want more sets like this!

This was a great build. Once all the pieces were sorted it was a nice steady build over 3 nights to get this monster set completed. Some nice techniques, nothing too repetitive and some really nice touches (although most are hidden once complete). Had some troubles with the Bluetooth software requiring the app to be installed 3 times but once the hubs had updated there were no more issues. Has been constantly played with my my 4 year old who uses it to deliver his dirty clothes to the washing machine. The app also allows 4 buttons to be programmed from a list of predetermined coded steps or it will record/save your movements which is another great feature.12+ for building but 4+ for actually having fun with it.

This is a splendid model, with most photos of it not doing it justice, but has some tricky bits during the build, especially if you are trying to get as perfect a result as possible (with the injection flaws hidden). In particular, the orientation of pieces is often unobvious when you start making a sub-assembly.If you have electrical problems, be sure to check that you have wired everything right, and that you are using fresh batteries (especially the first time you start a control+ hub up, when it does a firmware update). Using a Huawei P30 Lite to run the app works absolutely fine.Overall, I'm glad I got this despite it not having as much mechanical complexity as some other recentmega-kits.
