Its BIG. But you already know that. As a 62 year old newcomer to Lego I am amazed by the sophistication and complexity of the Lego Technics range. Since buying the Lego ideas Saturn V and the Yellow Submarine a couple of months back I have waded in and purchased the LEGO 42043 Technic Mercedes-Benz Truck and the LEGO 42054 Technic CLAAS XERION 5000 tractor and this set . I have to say I was in two minds about purchasing this as many folk have commented on the difficulties in making the power functions operate. Also, it frankly looks like some thing of a rejected prop from Thunderbirds. Still the challenge of building the currently biggest Technics available together with a good price from Amazon made me dive in.The build is split into 8 stages with components in numbered ( 1 - 8 ) plastic bags. Some stages have multiple bags for a given stage for example there are nine bags marked as '6' - this is biggest stage as it contains the 75 cm long bucket arm. Assembly instructions for the model are for the most part excellent and as there are 450 pages, plentiful.I did not find any of this build particularly challenging and my advice just take your time and don't rush it, the fun is the build and watching the thing take shape is great fun, highlight has to be attaching the bucket arm to the base caterpillar unit.Important: I did take care with the assembly to ensure that gears had room to move laterally as the instructions advise. I am pretty sure this is the reason some folk have reported problems with the power operation. The motor is a Lego XL but frankly it is being pushed to its limits driving this 3.5 kg beast and the sheer amount of friction being generated by all those gears is considerable. That said it runs fine if slowly ( geared downed a lot, to provide authentic feel and also the only way this much mass is going to be moved by that small a motor, but again I doubt the real thing that inspired this model holds any lap records!Driving the caterpillars is limited to forward/ backward i.e. no steering. Use of the power functions to drive, swivel upper stage around the base and power the bucket wheel and two conveyor belts is handled via two gear boxes and is not the most intuitive experience that said with practice you will get there. For comparison and based on my limited experience, if I had to choose between this and the LEGO 42043 Technic Mercedes-Benz Truck, the truck wins as it is hands down more fun and challenging to build and unlike this model it is based on an actual prototype rather than a generic hazy concept, on a good day both models can be found on Amazon for around £135 give or take. At this price point I think it represents good value for money and certainly for myself not disappointing.

Have had my eye on this set for a while and decided to take the plunge when the price hit £140.I have absolutely no regrets. The set was really enjoyable to build and never got repetitive as some can do and every step was so satisfying and became so addictive. When you mount the bucket to the arm was a highlight, it all just fit into place and you could see where all the gears and wheels engaged with one another. As you went along it just got bigger and bigger and you wonder where it will stop, you're going to need a lot of room to display this model. Many reviews will tell you that the set is very slow when using the motorized functions and this is true, but when you see the amount of gearing on this thing you can understand why. It's also quite heavy so it's not really surprising so I would'nt count this as a negative. If I had to pick a negative with this set it's that there are quite a few stickers. Personally, for an expensive set I expect Lego to stop penny pinching and print the parts but that's probably never going to happen. So yes, a fantastic set. Whether you're a Technic fan or not you'll probably enjoy the finished product no end. You'll probably require an extra pair of hands on occasion and kids will probably require adult supervision.

This is the largest Lego technic set available.I was initially apprehensive about ordering this kit,as it is very daunting, but I needn’t have worried,as the instructions were fantastic, and it went together beautifully.I did decide to alter the gear ratio of the bucket,as it was too highly geared as standard, and needed lowering, because the bucket was jamming up.This was easy to do using just the parts that came with the kit, slightly rearranged.Lego really should have done this modification in the form of an addendum to the instructions,I don’t know why they didn’t.Anyway,if you’re in two minds whether to buy this, you don’t need to worry,it’s nowhere near as hard to build as it looks, and it’shuge and impressive once it’s built.guaranteed to turn heads!

Haven't played with lego technics for nearly 30 years ( 41 now ) , bought some lego for my youngest daughter and was helping her build it and remembered how much I loved playing with lego so decided that I wanted a kit for myself and decided to go big for my first kit , Amazon were doing this at a discount so decided to take the plunge . Didn't realize exactly how big it would be but after 20 hrs of work I do now , only issues I have are that 2 little pegs were missing but got around that and the gears quite easily jam up but tap the gears and it starts working again ( could do with better quality plastics for the gearbox parts and a second motor for the thing as one just seems a bit inadequatefor all the functions )

The spirit of LEGO technic is in its construction. As an AFOL I only build large sized sets. The excavator when finished is well worth the 18 hours I spent making it as I did not want to make a single mistake. . It is huge and a very satisfying build. The movements are a replication of the monster excavators that are steady and slow, so I would not call it sluggish but actually it is totally realistic. Full credit should go to the design team. I was pleasantly surprised that the excavator can rotate endlessly if left on a battery. The forward movement is also ok. what do you expect; a construction equipment going at the speed of a Porsche!.LEGO should continue giving us sets this engrossing each year.

Arrived on time, without any defect. The box is huge, the manual is huge (over 600 steps) but the printed one is only for the main escavator. If you wish yo create the second alternative model you need to download the instructions from Lego website. Me and my 8 yrs old child are still building (we're almost at 30%) and so far all instructions were very clear and apparently we didn't make any errors in assembling the model. What surprised me is that, apart when you need to attach main blocks together, my child (passionate for Lego but only 8 yrs old) built alone with just some help. So consider that you don't need to be present all the time even with a younger child (12-16 suggested by Lego).

Awsome bit of lego, my first proper challenge for myself age45+ , if there is one thing i have learnt is to read instructions don't assume you know where bits go ,i found once i put the motor all together found one red cog under box had to take it to bits and do again but apart from that it was great. Worked first time when completed fully ,although i do find the little bits that are supposed to be the rocks some of the small bits get caught up and can stop the motor by wedging conveyor belt .well worth the money . I belong to a model club and some of the boys there are eager to see finished itemNow saving up for r/c front loader £200+

This set from Lego is amazing! There is an awesome use of gears to obtain a lot of different function with just 1 XL Motor.Otherwise this is even the weak point of this model: only 1 Motor (even if XL) for such a big and complex model it's just not enough and you will notice that some movements are not so fluid.Batteries must be of good quality and at full charge for best results.Visually impressive and presenting some new parts that will give new opportunities for custom creations. The model contain even a white mining truck very similar to set Lego 42035, anyway this is a more simple version of it.

Much like its real life counter part this kit is a behemoth, it dwarfs other technic kits, its a complex build, absolutely tones of gears and loads of moving functional parts.I would say even at full RRP its good value, shouldn't be attempted by anyone not familiar with technic kits as one mistake will most likely mean loss of function. It comes in a massive box, has a really thick manual and is built in 8 subsections. The kit even includes lego rubble and a fuctioning dumper truck.I really hope Lego keep producing large scale kits like this as im hooked as both a builder and a collector.

My 10 year old son has built this over the last week. He didn't need any help apart from getting a few long bits to click into place. It works but is very slow and the gears slip quite a lot. With hindsight (which is why I'm writing this review) I would have checked on him a bit more as he built it and ensured every cog and gear moved a freely as possible. Then it would have stood as good a chance as possible to run like it does in the videos. But even so, it's an impressive build, and well worth the money compared to other sets.

I believe this is Lego's largest ever Technics set.Almost 4000 partsAlmost 700 pages of instructions.Incredibly detailed. Its a great shame Lego decided to do all the functions via one motor and a gear box. This is a model that lends itself to multiple motors and remote control. Why only 4 stars? The truth is I found it a boring build compared to other Lego Technic modelsBeware this is a very large model that takes up a large amount of room.

This is a serious build for any Lego fan at 3929 pieces and a novel of a intstruction guide at 650 pages but it's well worth the 8+ hours it's takes to build. Requires serious attention to put it together correctly and get it to work. The PF is slow and clunkly which is fine but the motor is at its limits for something so big. Big kids / Small kids will love it just be mindful it's massive so think about where it's going once it built.

What can I say that's not already been said, it a magnificent kit, challenging and fun to build, even for a 27 year old. I would whole heartedly recommend this to anyone who wants to get it. It's heavy and very detailed and once you fine tune the gear positioning when you build it, it will run smoothly and quickly. All in all a wonderful thing to behold, especially as it's now sat in my living room for all visitors to see!

I have a very good time spending many hours building this huge LEGO set (biggest ever for me). Still not finished but I appreciate the engineering of mecanics to transmit power using a single motor. I'm learning many building techniques and the number of pieces is huge and will allow me to build my own big things without mixing pieces with other sets.Instruction book is also top quality. You can't miss a step.

12.10.2016

I like the set as it is massive and challenging to build alone or with my kids. What I would have liked is a full function remote control to be included, or an optional instructions and parts set for fully motorizing and remote controlling the set. A set this big and massive should be fully motorized like the Volvo loader. Also the motor is too weak for the size and weight of the set so it moves very sluggish.
