Lego continue their Clone Wars releases in 2009 with set 8039: Venator Class Republic Attack Cruiser and while the scale is drastically reduced this is nonetheless a great replica of the backbone of the Republic Fleet.Built using a similar construction framework to 2006's 6211 Imperial Star Destroyer, this predecessor is packed with play features and great detailing. The forward module roof hinges open to reveal Palpatine's office inside. there is a rotating throne chair, control panel, storage box with a hologram of the Death Star and room for guards as well. On the outside there are laser cannon batteries, one on each side, and they can move up and down covering about 170 degrees of fire. The aft section comprises several compartments. The hull plates on the wings hinge up through 90 degrees and the lower wing tips flatten out as well.In the front there is a removable bomb bay drop pod. This contains 5 bombs and by turning the axle on the port side the cogs inside release the bombs onto your targets below.Behind the bomb bay there is a turbolaser cannon which slides along a platform so it can be deployed on either side. It is built on a turntable so it covers about 280 degrees rotation and there are two red tipped flick missiles in the top of the gun. There is a seat on the side for a Clone Gunner. The upper hull of each wing has 4 turbolaser emplacements which can rotate the full 360 degrees and the cannons can also be positioned through 180 degrees as well. The upper middle section houses a carry handle which swings up and out of the forward part. behind it is the bridge which can actually be removed by pulling it out of the back. There is room inside for a Clone Pilot. At the aft the end panel hinges down and there is an escape pod contained inside. The pod has an opening side canopy and retro thrusters that angle out through 100 degrees on either side. You get five figures with the kit. Two are reissues, a Clone Pilot and a Clone Gunner. For the first time this kit includes Chancellor Palpatine, who has a great evil look on his face, and 2 Senate Clone Commando Troopers, decked out in their blue armour and each on has a black heavy assault rifle. The Cruiser is 54 cm long (forward to aft hull), 30.5 cm wide (port to starboard wing tip) and 18 cm tall (lower hull to upper command hull). The kit comprises 1125 pieces (not including figures, weapons, missiles and bombs), there are 10 decals to apply and construction time is about 90 minutes.A brilliant capital ship and a definite must have for any Republic space fleet.

Like almost all the larger Star Wars Lego sets, this one is delightful to look at (but not so durable to hold/play with). On most of our Star Wars ships, I grabbed additional "reinforcing" pieces from our existing collection to make the model sturdier---it's possible to modify it in a way so as not to change the outer look of the ship. Without additional reinforcement to the design, this set is more like a cool display you might keep on a shelf or desk and play with carefully. I got this at $149 USD, so the price-per-piece cost was about right, lower than many current sets; there are not any truly unique parts to add to your large collection though. The pieces (almost 1200)are NOT in numbered baggies for building purposes. To avoid major frustration searching for parts during construction, you will need to do some preliminary sorting by color or type. With the pieces somewhat sorted out, this is still what I would consider a challenging build for a smaller child. Because there are a lot of connecting sections, it's critical that certain pieces are in exactly the right place; with less-than-perfect attention to detail an inexperienced builder might realize down the road that something isn't fitting together correctly because of an earlier oversight (mercifully, mistakes can be corrected in most cases without breaking the whole thing back down). Kids might learn a good lesson there---pay attention to instructions, check your work carefully, be persistent, etc. There are 2 booklets of instruction and most of the ship is modular, so there are plenty of opportunities for taking a break during the process. I would say this took about 2 hours to get finished. The ship is very cool though---moving wings and a fully retracting main compartment, bomb-dropping mechanism, escape pod, and more. All the Star Wars sets are great to look at and this one is no exception. The only challenge is keeping the thing together during play time!

My 10 year old boy loved putting this together, as he is into star wars & spending time with lego. It too a while to put together and then he started playing with it, unfortantly bits started to come off, as it has wings, etc, then he got board of putting them back in the right place, so he put it in his lego box and just puts other bits on top of it, when he plays with it. so good initially, but re wing bits, it would be better if they were bigger bits of lego, rather than small bits which could easily fall of lots of times.

My son has started collecting the star wars clone wars lego sets and chose this one to spend his birthday money on. Seeing him rush to his room and disappear for an hour, surface for food, grab his 8 yr old sister to help, and resume building makes me say that this is an excellent item! He has trouble reading but managed to put this together himself and continues to play with it with enjoyment. Full marks!

My 7 year old son had 2 days of fun and concentration immediately after Christmas making the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser. With a little effort from your youngster you can ignore the 9-14 on the box.The gift was also delivered in good time. All together a great buy. Why only 3* for durability? Once made it needs to be looked after/handled with care.

Very clever and detailed Lego model. Kept my intelligent 10 year old occupied for a week and a half. Only help from me was in in making sure the initial pieces were well pushed together. Once built tends to fall apart if handled too much- it is effectively a complex model , not a toy. Look out for the great Chancellor Palpatine.

My son loves lego and wanted this for ages. He is twelve years old and it took him two hours to build it. He has made his own ships since and is very clever at building. The instruction book was very easy to follow. It takes you stage by stage using pictures. He has had it for a month and still plays with it every day!

My 8 year old son, who loves Lego, was challenged by this model, but built it nonetheless in 3-4 sessions, and was extremely proud of himself. It is quite delicate when built, but that in itself is not cause for criticism. The delivery (to Hungary) was in 2 days from placing the order, by normal post - a record.

Just the quality that you would expect from a Lego product. This is an excellent ship, very sturdy and strong. There are also a lot of extras with it. It takes some building but it is worth it in the end.

The box was badly damaged on arrival so would have been unsuitable to give as a gift. My 7 year old and I have not finished building yet but he assures me it will be a cool addition to his collection!!

Fabulous excitement but equal disappointment when instruction book did not include all the instructions esp section2. Two copies of section 1. Not good enough at the price!
