For someone who grew up with Lego as a child I’m always a little hesitant when it comes to the ‘pre-planned’ kits. I find they stifle the imagination a little too much - sure once you’ve built up a few kits you can mix and match but it’s not quite the same as a box full of bricks and several hours to kill! That being said the new arctic series look very good.. I Built it with my 8 year old who needed very little guidance, she really likes the newer instructions which walk you through step by step building just the right amount of detail and scale pictures of key pieces really help ... we (I) did make the mistake of ripping open all the numbered bags and attempting to sort into Tupperware boxesbut as this is multiple individual kits in one - having all your bricks out in one go tends to make things more confusing rather than working through things methodically by the numbers...a note to this effect would be handy for the uninitiated/impatient!The kits went together well and had a nice mix between functioning parts and intricate detail.. this kit felt like you could play with it without constantly disintegrating...rather than put on a shelf away from the younger kids! - it only took us an hour or so to build so perhaps the age range on the kit is a little conservative (8 year old needed minimal guidance).I really liked how it was several standalone kits - it felt like more value for money that way..and helps with longevity.. you can play with the vehicles on their own all as a set - I also really enjoyed being able to re-configure the various elements (hook/unhook trailers). The addition of the mammoth ‘on ice’ was a great touch..All in all a well thought out kit - and one that truly lets the imagination run free! I look forward to testing out more in the series in the future!

This took a little over 2 hours to construct (I was no slouch about it believe me and I really can't believe the other claims here of under 1 hour), and seems well within the capabilities of the intended age group; the only annoyance was a couple of places where you are putting dark blue bricks on top of other dark blue bricks and it's a bit difficult to ascertain in the diagrams in those places exactly what's going on.As is sometimes the case with Lego there are the little elements of whimsy (coffee dispenser and mug in the science lab) but also some things you don't quite "get" initially or at all (there are some yellow things you put inside boxes, which I only much later realised are supposed to be snowshoes and can thus be put on the figures - the boxes have slots and if shaken around the snowshoes can come flying out). The theme here is a train of arctic explorer vehicles which can be connected together - a self-mobile crane vehicle, towable science lab on sleds, self-mobile giant circular saw and towable sled/trailer. There is also a mammoth inside blocks of ice. The "story", if you like, is of arctic explorers freeing the frozen mammoth using the saw, lifting it onto the trailer with the crane, then towing it away (though I can't actually see, despite the picture on the box, how the mammoth can actually possibly affix to the trailer to do this). Maybe as an adult who has left behind childish things I'm really overthinking this too much, but it feels like relatively limited scenario for play; maybe children with active imaginations can make more of it.3½ stars rounded up to 4.

My six- and seven-year-old boys were very eager to get this set. I was sceptical because it's fairly expensive and they were really just excited about the mammoth figure; the rest of the set looked a bit ordinary from the box lid. But we spotted it at a good discount and they had enough Christmas money to buy it between them. The set comes in numbered bags with separate instructions for each of the elements, so great for sharing the construction. They were able to build the whole thing between them in an afternoon. The mammoth is definitely the star of the show, but the rest of the set is much better than I thought. The boys love using the saw to break up the ice around the mammoth, then the crane lifts it onto the sledge; the vehicles can all be coupled and uncoupled in different orders to make a long train, the science lab is pretty cool, and there's a good range of minifigs for imaginative play. The boys have played with this set regularly for several weeks now. One of those fairly rare cases where the box design is less exciting than the actual toy.

As per usual this is a high quality playset that any child should be delighted with. Inside the box you get 6 numbered bags and then 2 separate bags with the wheels and mammoth parts in.Alongside and within these are 6 new mini figures and a handful of instruction booklets to put it all together.I would say this collection is firmly aimed at the younger end of the Lego market as the builds are a lot more straightforwards than the average Star Wars kit and, visually, are a lot more appealing to smaller kids. That is not to say there is not a lot to do though and this should provide any parent with a good few hours of concentrated silence at the very least!Once built there are plenty of movable parts to make the finished products fun to play with and create scenarios for.Once again,Lego have provided a winning kit. It only loses one star because I feel £85 is grossly overpriced for what you're getting (I would say the same of most kits) and closer to £50 would be (barely) more reasonable.

As always with LEGO, this is a great product. The set itself feels a little different to other LEGO City sets i've had in the past simply because the actual build time is quite short. This really isn't a complex build and you'll have the whole lot done within under an hour. The set itself is made of 4 main components which are a monster truck with working crane, a mobile lab with a flip up roof to access the interior, a trailer with a chainsaw/buzzsaw and a final sledge/ski bike trailer. All 3 trailers connect to each other in various combinations. As well as these 4 main components you also get a small ice cave, giant mammoth, 6 LEGO figures and a handful of accessories such as pick axes, walky talkies, snow shoes, etc.All in all, this is yet another great LEGO product and highly recommended... As always though, it does seem very [pricey for what it is but that's par for the course with LEGO.

My daughter was very pleased with this Lego set. It was challenging enough to keep her concentrating, but not so hard to be frustrating for children at the younger end of the suggested age spectrum. It took her around 3 hours to put it all together and she enjoyed the whole thing. Now it's built I can imagine a younger child getting hours of fun with it, using their imagination, with the explorers discovering the mammoth and transporting all their gear across the snow. She liked the little details like the snow shoes, mug and screen, and the people all seem to have distinct personalities - not just the same faces and outfits. The price is quite high, but as Lego sets go it's pretty reasonable for the amount of play time it will give both for building and playing with it once built.

This is a really smart Lego set with some pretty unique feature. The mammoth is fantastic - just the right size and my daughter declared it one of her favourite ever lego "characters". The explorers are very cool and there are a decent number (6) in the set to play with. The overall theme is great and a bit different from any of the other City sets we have. It has a really rugged feel to it, and the huge wheels (and massive saw) on the vehicles makes for some great possibilities when you start to combine with other sets. Assembly time is not huge for this set - you'll probably be done in an hour, but subsequent play time is much longer. As always with lego, build quality and instructions are top notch.

To say that this was well received by the kids is an understatement. As soon as it got into the house they were ripping the box open and building it. It's an impressive set, took them most of the evening to finish, and consists of a four vehicles that can be connected together along with a woolly mammoth inside a 'block' of ice (I think.) There's a lot of Lego here and weeks later it's still being played with, we have a procession antarctic explorers across the living room floor! The mammoth can be put on top of a sledge, there's a crane (Which was a *little* wobbly) and a rotating ice cutter, so plenty of moving bits to keep kids occupied.Highly recommended for Lego mad children!

This is a mega set as my grandson puts it. He is seven and loves Lego as most kids do. He has been building this after school with his granddad over three nights and is now on display in his bedroom. There are lots of fiddley bits and moving parts which help with problem solving, which our grandson enjoyed doing by himself, poor granddad did not get much of a look much to his disappointment. There are rotating wheels, moving articulated arm, door that open and shut, figurines and a chain saw so it is a great model to be played with. It is a great set well worth buying and up to Lego`s usual good quality and attention to detail. It comes in a big box so is a great gift for any child.

My daughters (aged 8 and nearly 11) have rather enjoyed building and playing with this kit. They worked together and took about three hours to get it all together; as ever the instructions are bang-on. Have a good look at the pictures on the product's page as they do show in detail what's in the box.The girls thought this was much less difficult to assemble than some of the kits they've built, the dolphin cruiser for example, but whilst the eldest soon lost interest playing with the end result, the youngest is still really into it and has been searching the 'net for all sorts of detail about mammoths, so perhaps better suited to the lower end of the 7 - 12 age rating.

This was passed to my junior Viner LEGO tester for a review.Hours of silence followed so I can assume it is a very fine kit. Hopefully plenty more silence will follow. As with all modern LEGO, you can build from different instructions to extend the playability. Apparently the Mammoth is "way cool" and others agree too. It also led to much searching about mammoths so the educational part has worked. I do fear though that a Mammoth will soon appear in Gotham City and give Batman a hard time, When asked if the kit was worth it, I got a huge grin and a "yes!!" and I'm back to favourite uncle again.

Another amazing Lego City installment. This one is an Arctic Exploration unit and comes with six figures in arctic clothing, a mammoth frozen in a block of ice, 4 ice tundra vehicles and a brick separator. While I still feel that most Lego sets are obscenely overpriced, I can't argue with the amount of time my children spend on them and the amount of joy the derive from them. On that basis, I suppose them must represent value for money. This is a very cool and slightly different Lego City set that will appeal to most enthusiasts.

This is a great set from LEGO and we found a great idea that they added an animal frozen in ice.The three vehicules have a lot of playable value. They can connect to eachother to form a train. The mammut is quite big (hand-size) and fits nicely in the ice enclosure. The "ice block" is so built that the bricks come easily apart when the cutter-blade slices through .This set is a nice addition to other older sets from the arctic range. Our 9 years old loves it! We plan to add another set from this new range.

Grandson loved my Christmas gift, a great addition to his massive Lego collection/obsession! His concentration at nearly 6 years old is wonderful to behold and Lego has played a huge part in this. This set includes natural history, archaeology, and engineering facets and can be enhanced with other pieces eg the exploration ship! He creates all sorts of scenarios as he is an avid reader, and enjoys inspiration from the Lego Ideas books! He will sit for hours focused on his plans! Magic!

My grandson tested this product. He's a little over the age range recommended on the box, but thinks a seven-year-old would find it difficult. He enjoyed building the Lego, and found it really fun. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow provided you build it in order. There’s a few really good features including one movable crane and a movable drill. Yes, it is expensive, but Lego doesn't come cheap and is a quality product, so 5 stars
