Sorry if I make a lot of comparisons with Metroid Prime Hunters in this review but if you've played both, then you'll know whyAnyway, about a year ago, Metroid PH came to the DS and proved that the format was almost ideal for FPS games. Quite surprisingly though, only a handful have been made for the DS since, and these have ranged from mediocre to awful. Bionicle Heroes has crept in fairly unannounced and is (excuse the pun) - an unsung hero! Whereas Metroid PH was largely about exploration and investigation, this game is more action-based. Exploration is well rewarded though, which offers good replay value and a nice adventure elementGraphically the game is impressive for the format - ofcourse the DS will never be able to provide smooth console visuals but it doesn't feel like a compromise in any aspect. Characters and animations are fluid, textures and environment are clean and varied, it's a very good effort. The presentation, menus and interface are all well-designed and easy to useBionicle Heroes features a good ambient soundtrack. The tunes aren't catchy but flow well in the background and suit the mood and environments very well. Sound effects themselves are good, but not particularly powerfulGameplay is very good and feels very natural. Control scheme and mechanics are almost identical to Metroid PH which is a good thing - it doesn't take long to grasp and accuracy is surprisingly good. The only problem I have is the sniper gun - the controls seem to pick up every tiny twitch you make meaning long distance shots can be slightly tricky. However, knowing how Metroid PH is a big help - within 5 seconds of starting Zone 1 you are discovered by 2 enemies which takes a good few shots each. There is also no difficulty setting either, so the game may feel quite a challenge at first. One good aspect is that to regain health, all you have to do is avoid be attacked for a few seconds. This may make the game seem very easy but some rooms are unforgiving and will have you swamped with enemiesOnce you have the hang of the controls, the game's main quest can be finished in a fairly short space of time. But to collect everything in the game takes much longer and will have you replaying levels with stronger enemies a few times. Collecting the runes, many of which are out of bounds early on in the game, rewards the player with Extras - cheat modes which can be bought with a combination of runes. These are very imaginative and give the game a nice twist - some of these Extras include a carnival mode (enemies will release balloons and confetti when destroyed), a party mode (flashing lights and dance music), an extra-difficult setting - even a gun which fires barnyard animals! Unfortunately, unlike Metroid PH's excellent WiFi multiplayer mode, this game's only multiplayer feature is local multi-cart so you'll need friends with the game to play with them. The game is great single-player and offers hours of enjoyable FPS'ing on your DS. If you're after your first DS shooter and you prefer exploring and multiplayer, I would recommend Metroid PH over this. Otherwise I'd say Bionicle Heroes - give it a go, it's great even for people who don't care for Lego

This game is brilliant. Players aim to collect the Masks which come with ever-more advanced skills and weapons. 3 levels per zone end with a mask, and each mask brings upgrades compared to it's predecessor (for the same element). The game has no structure, but this doesnt detract from it. You can jump streight into any zone you like, and the difficulty seems to respond to your progress (eg. revisit a level you began with, and it will contain new more-difficult enemies). The levels are great fun, and filled with runes that can be used in combinations to unlock extras and special modes. They are also teeming with enemies, that shatter into lego pieces when you kill them (very satisfying)but can also catch you by suprise, and the game can get quite edgy. The combat is frantic in parts, and sections of levels usually end with a mini-boss of somekind, all building up to huge challenging bosses at the end of zones that guard the advanced masks.A great thing about this game is that it's totally un-punishing. Suffer damage, and you can simply retreat and your health will restore almost immediately. Die, and you will respawn very close by with no progress lost. However, although unpunishing, this doesnt detract from the difficulty of the game, or the experiance.A nice feature of the game is available from the start is called "constrACTION"/"destrACTION". On the basic un-masked mode holding a key for afew seconds in the right position causes piles of Lego-Technic to magicly assemble themselves into levitating lifts, walkways, and huge bridges. Despite this feature not being puzzling or interactive, constructing an enormous lego bridge across a lava-filled canyon using nothing but an outstretched lego hand is strangely satisfying. The graphics of the levels themselves is nicely done, but the enemies are blocky, which is appropreate in my opinion, given they are meant to be lego. The player manouvers their Toa through the levels using the arrowkeys, and looks around/aims guns using the stylus. This system works well, and allows great weapon-precision. The player can also rapidly switch mask/gun/ability using icons across the top of the touchscreen. All the levels are full of Runes and Secrets that must be uncovered for completion, and to unlock extra features, and they tend to be well hidden, often behind barriers that require the special mask abilities aqquired in other zones in order to collect. This extends the life of the game, with the player revisiting old zones to retrieve these bonuses using their new skills, fighting off enemies that wherent there on the first visit, preventing this process from feeling monotonous or repetative.Overall a great game

I'm probably a bit biased due to my everlasting love of classic Bionicle and the fact that I have 13, soon to be 14 copies of this game, 5 of them for DS, but it really is a solid game. The controls are nice, there's plenty of extras to unlock and powers to upgrade, and it has quite solid controls with several different options. Personally I prefer the buttons for looking around, but if you prefer using the stylus you can also do that,It also has a good selection of levels with plenty of secrets to find to unlock the extras. Sure there's a spot where I fell through the ground a couple times, but no game's perfect. Also gotta mention the extras. From tiny enemies to a default weapon that shoots random farm animals or literally making every weapon sound into a person trying to imitate it, they're completely silly and lovely. And the feeling of completing it 100% never gets old, be it the first or eighth time.Even just the little things like the music are quite good for a DS game. Maybe not super special on its own, but it adds a lot of character to the levels. The enemy selection features pretty much all the baddies from the previous years, from Bohrok to Visorak, adding decent variation to the enemies, even if there can be a bit many of them now and again. But the game does have unlockable one-hit defeat, so that won't be a problem when replaying al lthe levels again to complete it.While on levels, I personally love how you can start with whichever level you wish. Stage one of all six levels are available from the start, so whether you want to grab masks and power them up fully one at a time or just grab every mask and have a much more varied if weaker arsenal from the start is all up to you. Add to that the three more stages and boss fight per level and extra bonus levels after those and there's plenty to play in this gem of a DS game. Add to that the three save files per game and this game has more than plenty to offer. Overall it's just a great game for any DS collection.Read full review...

Just to clarify,I'm 34 and I actually like this game, yes it has 7+ on the box but so what,I also have both Suffering games, all the Resident Evil,Silent Hill etc.I confess I've only had it a short while but it's fun,it's a third person over-the-shoulder shooter where you play a Bionicle (natch),you pick up the masks to gain new powers(if you've bought them),this encourages multiple play throughs and you pick up lego bricks, enough will trigger Hero Mode whereby you can operate gold 'constractions' such as doorways, bridges etc. Here's the thing, you're invulnerable in Hero Mode but since you have to trigger a constraction to proceed you aren't immortal for the rest of the game which some reviewshave picked up on.Some other magazines have complained about the controls,it's all on one stick and you strafe with the trigger held down, this is infinitely easier than dual stick control and eradicates the dodgy camera which only plays up when you're really close to something.Overall it's fun,the graphics are sharp and clear and it has immense replay value, granted it's easier than most games but it's still challenging, the only downer is you have to complete the level for it to save,it has plenty of checkpoints though. One more thing,I've since finished this with 100% completion, easy enough but the secret chamber 3 mission is a swine, you need to get gold to get the 100%!

This is the best game i've ever played. The levels are action-packed and fairly long. There are lots of battles with enemies like Roodaka that you need to depend on 'hero mode' to complete!
