The engine is as described, and our remote control works very well, unlike some other reviews.Compared to Brio official electric engines, this one is superb. There is almost no wheel slipping, and the engine is more than powerful enough to pull it's two carriages up bridges and inclines. The lights and sounds are great, my two and a half year old loves it, and has no problem using the remote. On the negative side, our engine's undercarriage sat just slightly too low, which meant the engine would occasionally get stuck going up or coming down a bridge. I had to sand the plastic undercarriage to remove about a millimetre before it stopped catching. Additionally, when the engine hits a particularly tight bit of track, the wheelbase can be a bit too long, resulting in a derailment. This can be fixed with better track design. Finally, we have had one instance of the engine pulling away from the carriages on an incline, due to the magnet being slightly too weak. All in all, the positives massively outweigh the negatives, and I would definitely recommend this (so would my son!).

We hadn't tried the Brio branded train due to the feedback. All I know is that this train really is the business. It is powerful enough to pull a long train even up steep bridges. All the action is on only one of the engine style trains, but this doesn't seem to matter too much. There are quite a few sound effects and best of all, headlights on the RC engine, all of which can be controlled by the remote control. The only down side for us was that previously we didn't have an RC train, only the small wooden unpowered affairs. When we originally bought our bridge-stock, they were high enough for the smaller wooden carriages. However, this train is larger than the wooden trains, and so we needed to purchase a higher bridge. Only a minor point really, otherwise both myself and the kids are really pleased (except for having to play with the train in the dark now due to the kids liking the headlights so much;-) )

While others have reported build quality issues with this product, we've been happy with ours so far - perhaps we're just lucky. Our 4 year old loves it, plays with it every day, and it's robust enough to survive when the 2 year old gets hold of it too. It's a good intermediate between basic wooden trains and more sophisticated electronic sets aimed at slightly older children (Tomica, Hornby etc.). The gearing is low, making it strong enough to climb gradients & not too fast for small setups or tight radius curves.Only real downside is inherent in running a battery powered train on a wooden railway system - the points/junctions are all manual, there's no mechanism allowing a battery powered train to take the left or right fork so it'll either take the same one every time, or de-rail. But I'm hoping it will last & keep the children amused til they're old enough for Tomica/Plarail or Hornby.

Do you like trains? I like trains. Sometimes I walk around the house in my underwear going "choo choo, choo CHOOOOOOO", with great enthusiasm. Sometimes for an extra added kick I add a "chugga chugga, CHUGGA chugga" engine sound along with it. And when really happy I put on a black and white engineer's cap and tell myself I am Casey Jones, running on the Danville Line. One day a nice man with a stethoscope said the neighbours were complaining and I had to come along quietly with him. But they let me take this toy train with me and I am soooooo happy where I am now. Gosh, I'm asked about the trains every day here. "Choo choo...choo CHOOOOOOO". I am so happy. Are you happy?

I bought this train after having trouble with another make of train we bought. We have found it very robust. My toddler likes to separate the carriages and add others in between them and try to get as many as possible in a line. It is very strong and pulls along most of them including up and over a bridge. They lights and sounds are good and it is a very quick around the track. My son also likes to push the engine without the battery in it on its own around the tracks. It works well on our wooden track and doesn't slip or slide going up hill which one of our other trains does. I would recommend this train.

I bought this for my 3 year olds birthday as she struggles to reach round her train set so doesn't play with it very often. As soon as she opened the box the train set was out and she was off. The controls are very easy to understand and she has no problems making it go, stop, turning the lights on and off etc. This train will quite easily pull 7 carriages up an incline and over a bridge which was a concern of mine when purchasing this item. It will also work on the carpet and is great at chasing cats and dogs round the house (albeit slowly and in a straight line!)

My son loves BR1O and generally the quality is good. However their products with electric motors seem far below the mark -- all the BR1O (non RC) trains we have and which I have seen at his friends' houses are broken and the motors burned-out.This train seems to have a very solid motor and after two weeks of constant play is working fine. The remote connection is good and the sound effects are fund.I don't want to put down BR1O but they need to put better parts in their electric trains.

Bought for my 5 year old son and he loves it. It seems to be quite resilient and has a good speed, plus all the lights and sounds are great (even a realistic garbled station announcement!). He loves to have the train light on, especially going through tunnels and tends to forget to turn it off so we've discovered that the train turns itself off after several minutes, so you have to turn it off and on again for it to work again. At least it saves batteries that way. Very pleased with it.

This toy train is fantastic, my son is train mad so got him this for his birthday along with a wooden track for it to go on. It's very sturdy and easy to control. Lots of different sounds and a light on the train to turn on/off also forwards and reverse. Love the controller as it's shaped like a piece of track. Only thing is that it doesn't come with batteries so make sure you have 5 aaa batteries ready.

This came without batteries. The notes say requires AAA batteries and included LR44 battery. No it didn’t!. Came with no batteries and required 5 AAA batteries. Good job I had a stock of them!It looks like the toy has been updated to beefier batteries from the previous comments, it sounds like the model before ate LR44 batteries. This could make this a better selling point, so update the “comes with”

I very carefully read all the reviews for this item, as there were so many that were negative and decided to take the risk. We have being using it for three weeks now and my four and two year old love it. It has had a couple of battery changes, but has been a joy. It sometimes needs a push up the hills, but the kids love doing that. It is fun and seems robust so really pleased

So far so good. The train seem strong enough for my 3 year old and he loves it. Unlike the last remote control train (different brand), this one doesn't have a middle electric connection joining the carriages, so he can't break it. The only downside is that he can leave the switch 'on', which runs down the battery when he's not playing with it. All together a successful toy.

This train is excellent! The remote control has a really good reach so it's easy control from elsewhere in the room. The engine itself works well and it is very capable in terms of pulling carriages and going up and down hills.Buy this over the Brio equivalent any day because the Brio one is absolutely terrible. Our kids love this train and it keeps them busy for hours.

14.7.2011

Don't bother trying the more well known brand's equivalent of this train. In contrast it is robust, has more sounds and is much more fun. Both my 2 and 4 year old love it. Only downside is that it didn't come with batteries so make sure you have some in the cupboard to avoid impatient faces!

Excellent remote controlled train for brio track. Handles hills and tight bends very well and the remote works well even when covered by little hands and pointing in the wrong direction. I mark it down only due to excessive price tag. 30 is too high on reflection.
