I'm surprised by reviews saying this is complicated and that university educated people couldn't figure it out? Jesus, I'm in uni and am by no means a genius and we managed to get it within one play! Yes, there are instructions, yes they are long but really it's not that hard. There are lots of little rules or things that you might need to look up as you go but surely that's true of any game.First of all, this is the first type of card game like this I've ever played. I'm not much of a game "geek" like this and I've never really played anything beyond Monopoly yet I managed to get the hang of this and even win a few games! I really enjoyed it and once we had played it through once we started working out tactics. It was very fun, and the game goes fairly quickly (about 40 minutes a game) and at a good pace. It's a shame it's only for two people as it would be more fun to play as a large group. The game is quite simple. You get a hand of cards that are either: locations, characters, events or attachments. The characters you play and "battle" with, you can enhance them with attachments, get money from locations, and do interesting things with the events (such as kill the oppositions characters, block move etc. Everything is written on the card.) What cards you can play depends on how much money you have and you win by winning certain challenges which give you "power tokens".About the set itself, you get the following stuff: deck of Stark cards, deck of Lannister cards, coins, power tokens and plot cards. The cards are very high quality in my opinion. They are thick and glossy card and are substantial, same goes for the plot cards. The photography on the cards if gorgeous, all interesting stills from the HBO series. The coins and power tokens are popped out of thick cardboard when you get them so they aren't quite as fancy but are still quite nice, die-cut thick card with print on them. The box itself is very nice. We were given this as a gift and were very happy with it.I definitely recommend this for anyone who enjoys the series or the books and likes to play games with a friend or partner. As for not being able to figure it out: well apparently there are some people my age who just don't like to read an instruction booklet. Laziness!

Your first ten minutes with this game will be as such; you'll spend five minutes looking at how well presented it all is, from the box to the instructions manual, to of course the cards themselves. You'll then open the aforementioned instructions and have a five minute read-through feeling rather confused. But stick with it. Some comments on here suggesting that the instructions "do not correspond to the cards given" are simply made up.Its a game that you almost have to learn as you play, and as you become more experienced it becomes better and better. With a little help from an excellent set of Youtube videos (just search Game of Thrones card game), I picked up the general gist of it quickly and taught my partner in one slow,walk-through "round". By the second time of playing we managed almost a full run-through with a little bit of helping each other out and discussing which cards we were playing to make sure we were understanding the them and the rules correctly. By the third time we were away, playing the full game as it should be and feeling very satisfied with it. Stick with it; if you're a fan of the show its a very, very good game and one that you can repeatedly come back to with many new tactics, challenges and outcomes!

A great shortened version of FFG's main version of the 'A Game of Thrones' Living Card Game. The photo quaility stills from the TV show combined with it's open card layout is a real improvement over the 1st edition card style.Although it is only two fixed decks, Lannister and Stark, it does have 32 plot cards which will allow for some replay ability for a while, but eventually once a player gets used to the deck, this version of the game WILL get stagnant (hence only 4 stars). It's main strength however, is that is is a very good teaching tool for introducing new players into the game, as once a player has learnt to play using this game, they can then move on to the full LCG knowing all the basics, only having to learn about the new keywords in the main game.Overall, A great package for new players to the game or for causal players who just need a quick game on gaming night when a long game is out of the question.....

First impressions: not as complex and long-winded as some FF games. By the second time playing it we were fairly confident in the rules and the game moved at a decent, if not particularly rapid, pace. It's a standard two-player combat card game a la Magic: the Gathering, though to be honest I prefer the relatively fast speed of M:tG a lot more. It does have some nice strategic elements to it though and by halfway through the second game each of us was being a lot more careful in how we attacked the other player, and concentrating on building our power base instead of just battling to kill enemy characters.Being a Fantasy Flight game the presentation of the game is excellent, with each card featuring stills of the characters from the TV series - but then that's par for the course with Fantasy Flight stuff. However it's not expandable in any way, unlike the

We introduced a house rule to offset some of these weaknesses in game play: after the dominance phase, we add a new phase called 'rescue'. The player with least power tokens can look through their deck and choose a card to add it to their hand before shuffling their deck. It stops one player running away with the lead. It also mitigates the potentially problematic 'Iron Throne' card. Worked for us! Games are almost always a close call now, making it a much more enjoyable experience.
