Thought I'd redress the poor three star overall rating this drive had in Jan of 2019... it deserves better.I have a Apple Mac with USB3 ports.... (also thunderbolt which are Thunderbolt 2) but I'll be upgrading soon and the new Macs have only got USB-C - so this drive will be compatible for a while on this basis. Meanwhile, if you have USB3 ports (which most people do am guessing) then this drive works perfectly. The cable it ships with is USB-C to standard USB so this is a highly compatible drive generally. These cables are available everywhere for buttons if you wanted some spares....Try not to get confused about Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt 3 uses the USB-C connectors - so I'm guessing some people are tripping up on this. This drive it seems won't perform to Thunderbolt 3 standards, since they don't say it will - but USB-C (which I think is sometimes called 3.1) is already very fast - so this is perfect for people using video and photo storage. I'm a professional photographer by the way that does a lot of video stuff too. This drive is ideal! This is a BUS powered drive, so this is again very good for field operators - It's portability and padded drive protection are good and I've got other versions of this design including a TB2 one from years back, and it's not died on me. Can't say so much for the 4TB bus powered USB3 Seagate drives I also bought. I've had to say goodbye to three of these already since they just seized up... causing me some interesting backup shenanigans! I've also lost a couple of WD drives over the years and I own about 10 other Lacie desktop drives - most of which have never fallen over on me.Lacie are a proven and industry standard manufacturer and this drive, being 5TB is also a cut above in terms of storage to its competitors. I would always advise everyone to keep at least two copies of everything in two separate places... all drives do eventually die folks. This world is constantly changing with speed and storage but right now, but this drive is the best in terms of price, compatibility, portability and reliability. The photo looks correct to me by the way (some say this is the Thunderbolt version) either Amazon have changed the image since these people commented, or there's something I'm not seeing.... but, as previously mentioned, TB3 uses a USB-C connector anyway...

Great device for extra storage. I recently purchased a MacBookPro but it only had 128GB storage as I edit photos this wouldn't work out. So I already had in mind an external drive. The LaCie is simple and easy to use. Just plug in and drag and drop files onto it. Check they have copied, then dump files off your hard drive.I've had LaCie drives in the past and never experienced any failures. The unit is small and compact. It comes well packed and supplied with a USB 3.0 cable! YES CABLE INCLUDED. I emphasise this as the description doesn't lead you to believe this: yet Amazon encourage you to buy one - or at least it suggests others buy a USB cable.Tips for set up. If you want to register your drive as part of the set up.Then pull back the rubber bumper at the end the cable plugs in. (Not when attached to the computer) this is where the serial number is.When you plug it in you'll get a nice icon on your desktop (like pictured) and use the quick start icon to set it up.Remember when you've finished copying and done. Then click on the LaCie drive icon and drag to your trash bin to eject. If you fail to eject the drive it can possibly cause problems. It also appears to be a moving hard drive, I wasn't sure if this when I bought it. Not that it bothers me massively as its sold as a rugged drive. However the next purchase will be solid state as no moving parts. Aside from this for the price you can't go wrong. I wouldn't buy a cheaper drive as it is your data you are backing up / storing!

It's not the prettiest storage device I've ever owned but I suppose rugged > pretty when it comes to storing data. I haven't ever heard of LaCie before which is surprising given that I've since read that it's the film /music/ photography industry's preferred brand when it comes to storing media. I suppose it'll cope well with my hobby photos, music and miscellaneous documents no problem then. I'm terrible at backing up my laptop but I do save my media and important things regularly to external memory but don't really trust one particular device over another though so usually have the same stuff on a few devices just to be sure. I tend to use smaller drives though at around the 16gb - 32gb range so 1TB feels epic. This one is such a large memory that it will hold all my existing media and still have plenty room for the new.Easy to set up and although there is a little bit of formatting to perform (which my son did for me) it's more or less plug and play. I wish the usb port had a little cover or something to keep the muck out as it's not always put away in a drawer after use and sometimes just sits on my desk so will eventually attract dust no doubt. In the meantime it's more than enough for my files. So far it's proving invaluable but if anything goes wonky with it I'll update as and when.

Aesthetics, I think this drive is rather ugly looking as a Lacie product I dont think the design is their finest moment having previously owned several well designed and functional Lacie products.Designed as a rugged drive claiming to be able to survive a drop from around 1.2m, being able to survive running over by a 1 tone weight and being rain resistant are claims I dont intend on testing anytime soon.Performance is very good being a USB 3 drive, I own Windows PCs as well as a Macs and swapping and sharing files between both platforms, backing up data are concerns I wanted to address. The generous 1TB capacity should more than sufficient for personal use and I would suggest for small scale business use.Performance and compatibility was excellent, the maximum transfer rate is 135Mb/s, I was easily averaging around 95Mb/s when copying files to and from the device. Size and portability it is fine for what it is. The drive is designed to be powered solely from a USB cable so no need for any additional power source. A small status LED indicates what the drive is doing. The drive is bundled with PC and Mac backup software, which I haven't used yet. Overall very impressed by performance, the aesthetics let it down slightly (I mean bright orange really?).

This is the second one I've purchased and it simply works. I create a lot of video content that I need to share between machines and an external HD is the only solution that works for me.They are well-designed and durable and I never think twice about just dropping it into my rucksack along with my laptop and camera when out on the go. It's fast and silent - and totally powered from the USB so you don't need to worry about plugging it into it's own power socket.I'm a mac user and it works perfectly fine with both desktop and laptops. It does come with some software, but I just found it easier to format the drive when I received it and simply start fresh - which works great for my needs. So far neither drive has failed me - but this is technology we're talking about and never say never. So maybe one day I'll invest in a proper multi-harddrive server for backup purposes, or build my own cloud solution. Until then I'll stick to these great little devices.

I bought this drive as a replacement for a previous one that failed. After a simple set up to allocate space for different formats (Mac and Windows) the drive formatted itself and was ready to use within 5 minutes. It works perfectly with Time Machine on Mac - note that if you do use this, it is best to have a partition formatted for Mac use only for it to back up to and a separate partition for other files. Another thing to take note of is that when the drive is plugged into the computer for the first time, it says it has 931.5GB of space - when it is formatted, it will clean itself up and give you the full 1TB of space to use. This drive will work with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 (about 10 times faster transfer speed tan USB 2.0).I would definitely recommend buying as it will last a long time, especially with its design factors. The manufacturers website is included below:[...]

Pretty good customer serviceThis 4tb drive died 6 months after it started "ticking", which spells the end of the drive. The return process is complicated by the fact that you need to supply a product code which is NOT printed on the drive itself. It is not unreasonable to provide this but not printing these clearly on the product is an error (numbers and code cannot be found under the orange rubber covering as well). Of course, as the drive is dead, Lacie's suggestion to use a software tool is rubbish - nothing shows up.After many attempts I was able to get a product code by entering the serial number first. Why This is so complicated, I don't know but it's made to be complicated and difficult. On the plus side,Lacie did ship a new drive in less than a week including delivery. Also, the drive is quite fast. The cable is poorly fitting and of a special type.

I've used LaCie drives for about 10 years now in both studio and location recording settings. I bought this to record on location so the heavy duty protection was quite important. I haven't dropped it yet - I don't really intend to - but it is a nice safety blanket.I have only used the thunderbolt connection, I'm still not sure of the speed of USB3 for recording and can't really afford dropouts. Runs at 7400 rpm, I had no disk read speed errors or connectivity problems. It works really well from the bus power on the laptop, but obviously running this and an audio interface rapidly depletes battery power. Obviously though, right, no fault of LaCie there!I've never had any problems with LaCie before, didn't expect any with this, and it works perfectly.

Large capacity, light weight, rugged rubberised protection, hi speed USB-3 with USB-C connector, USB powered, there is not much more that can be asked from this product.Read and write speeds are not quite at the top end of USB-3 but not as slow as some other USB-3 storage devices that I own. So just above average in terms of speed. At 1TB, speed is valuable but not my main concern, I'm more concerned by the safety of my 1TB data stored on this device. I'm not about to drop it to test the protection offered by the case, but I do feel more confident that it would survive an accident.Overall quite satisfied with the Lacie Rugged, a slight bump in write speed would have made it 5 stars.

The LaCie Rugged Mini USB 1TB Hard Drive is exactly as I anticipated. It is solid and sturdy and portable and provides an easy to use drive that I am able to take with me when I take photos and create a back up copy for just in case. I am able to use it for all my photos and can easily use it to show photos to others and provide copies using their computer. It is weather proof and easily fits in my camera bag. It has become part of my standard camera kit. What makes this different from other hard drives is its portability in all weather conditions and its resistance to knocks. Worth the extra cost for the extra peace of mind that its solid build gives you.

Light weight drive made by a reliable external hard-drive manufacturer. LaCie make good digital products, and my rule of thumb for buying comp hardware is try and avoid companies that manufactured other technology before they entered the computer hardware game. Especially with hard-drives, I think, it is better to buy from companies who started off making the product you are buying. That's my opinion anyway. The partitioning software on Mac is easy to use, a sliding bar determines how much space you want to devote to FAT and the transfer speed is quite efficient. Good for editing video.

I thought I'd leave a review as I've been using these for years without an issue so despite others saying theirs have failed, there are clearly reliable ones around! Mine get carried around all over the place and I've never had an issue. I've just bought my eighth. One year I did buy a different brand as I was put off by the reviews on here saying avoid. It was the one most of the bad reviews suggest buying instead. That one failed only a couple of months after buying and I bought another one of these to replace it which worked fine!

These LaCie Rugged external hard drives are awesome. I took some on my around the world motorcycle adventure "TeapotOne" and they never let me down. This is my 3rd unit as I use them for backup when editing vids on the go.They have incredible protection qualities for your important data, allowing the hard drive to take fairly substantial knocks in transit, as well as offering some protection to the elements too.A great external hard drive for those who need to protect their files whilst on the go.

Backing up your precious documents/photos is an absolute must and I now have 3 different hard drives, in different locations, just in case the unthinkable happens, then at least my documents are safe. My older two HDs are at least twice the size of this and this one is so small that, when I'm away for long periods, I take it with me to back up on the move (keeping it in a separate bag to my laptop of course). Great product, and the rugged protection is an extra bonus for when I am travelling.

Owned this little HDD for a year, using it mainly for back-ups. We travel a lot on business so I always take a copy of most of our important stuff with us on this HDD. The ability to password protect the drive is great. Data transfer to and from the device is quick. I haven't dropped it on the floor yet (touch wood) but I think with the construction and extra rubber protection it wouldn't be a problem - highly recommended for business travellers.
