LaCie STFY10000400 10 TB d2 Professional Thunderbolt 3 + USB-C Desktop 3.5 Inch External Hard Drive for PC and MacUPDATE: a second LaCie-10TB was purchased by me on 27 March 2019, to back up data on my first LaCie-10TB. Using the USB 3.0 ports on a Lenovo G580 laptop (i3 model), data transfer rates were around 80MB/s. As before, they are extremely quiet, and after several hours of copying data from one drive to the other, both LaCie drives felt cool to the touch. The only reason I'm giving this drive 4-stars instead of the full-5, is that it doesn't come with USB 3 connectivity, to supplement the USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity that it's supplied with.My General Impressions of the LaCie-10TB:(1)SETUP: after unpacking, you need to set it up - software for this is already installed on the drive, for both Windows and Mac. However, I use Linux (Manjaro) as my main daily driver, but fortunately I have it dual-booted with Windows 8.1. Setup using Windows, and the online registration for the 5-year guarantee, were both straightforward. Following setup, I found that Windows or Linux will show a total of 9.1 TB available for file storage out of the indicated 10TB. A single 10TB hard disk is used for this drive.(2) SPEED: my laptop (Asus G750JS) has only Thunderbolt1 and USB3.0 connectivity. The 10TB LaCie drive has Thunderbolt3 and USB3.1. In order to setup a Thunderbolt1-to-Thunderbolt3 connectivity, I'd have to spend an additional £90 approx on a specialized adaptor and a connecting cable. Instead, I used the supplied USB3.0-to-USB-C (USB3.1) connector that came with the drive. It means, that instead of the advertised data transfer rate of "up to 240 MB/s" for Thunderbolt 3, I get around 165 MB/s (10GB/min) when copying from the laptop's solid state drive to the LaCie hard-disk drive (HDD), but this drops to 100-110 MB/s, when copying from a 4TB Seagate external HDD (USB3.0) to the LaCie HDD. Fine for my needs, as I'm simply using it as a storage drive for memory-hungry videos. However, it will take a while to transfer my 4.5TB of videos, i.e. 7.5 hours.(3) NOISE LEVEL: the most obvious thing is just how quiet it is - a real whisper. This is despite its hard disk spinning continuously: it doesn't stop spinning when idling, i.e. when no data is being copied to or from it. The quiet behaviour was a major factor in me buying this drive (£445.00) over the much cheaper Seagate equivalent (£249.99): some comments for the latter indicated a noise problem, which I didn't want.(4) OTHER: this drive produces hardly any heat. Even after 3 to 4 hours of data transfer, I noticed the metallic heat-sink designed chassis was hardly warm. Concerning the large blue flashing light on the drive being distracting/irritating (mentioned by some other reviews): I found a simple remedy for this (unless you prefer to work in a completely dark room) was just to turn the drive around, so that the flashing light faces away from you - then you won't see it.I'd definitely recommend the 10TB LaCie external drive, and would consider buying a LaCie drive again.

Got it today and is, as always with LaCie external drives, a breeze to hook up for a Mac user. And I'm pretty certain it won't disappoint me, as I've always found LaCie drives to be the most reliable. However, the information above doesn't clarify that the 3.1 USB-C port is only active when linking the drive to a PC/laptop and can't be used for daisy-chaining. This is what I had hoped, as I also have two Thunderbolt 2 and two USB-C (3.1) drives which I also need to hook up to my new iMac (which only has two Thunderbolt 3 ports). But by adding a Trust Oila 4 Port USB-C 3.1 hub to the configuration, I should connect all of them at the same time,as that hub has two USB-C ports for attachments (in addition to two USB-A ports). One of the iMac's TB3 ports will be used for this new TB3 LaCie, which is then daisy-chained to the two TB2 drives, with Apple's TB3-TB2 converter in between, while the Trust hub will be plugged into the other TB3 port and then hooked up to the two USB-C 3.1 drives (which have only one port each, so they can't be daisy-chained).I will get the Trust hub tomorrow, so we'll see if it works. I already have the TB3 to TB2 daisy-chining working fine. The similar and slightly cheaper Belkin USB-C 4-Port Mini Hub should work as well, but I chose the Trust hub as USB 3.1 drives all its ports, while the Belkin hub uses 3.1 for the C-type ports and 3.0 for the A-type ports. Using simple USB-A to USB-C cable, it should thereby be possible to hook more USB-C 3.1 compliant units to that hub.

Easy to set up. Very, Very quiet. Blue light is a bit distracting. One down side comes with a very short Thunderbolt cable. Had to buy a 3rd party one which is much longer.Only got it set up this morning, but have already transferred 2TB of music from my Porsche Lacie hard drive & it handles large quantities of data very impressively. Write speed is excellent.Happy customer. Would recommend

Had this about 3 months. It connected very easily to my IMac. I'm using Time Machine for backups which again was straightforward.I write music, so I also use this external drive to store all my audio sounds and instruments. The software then calls these audio files in real-time which is working perfectly.

Bought to provide additional backup support within home media. Drive is easy to set up and configure, speeds are as published so happy from that perspective. Would have like to see richer software from LaCie to manage data across network and drive compares but easily sourced from elsewhere!

I bought this 3 weeks ago to back up my laptop and 4 external hard drives. I wasn't certain it would be big enough but it has turned out that it definitely is.
