The lock seems solid, and the cover over the keyhole should decrease the likelihood of rust. The 4' cable is the perfect length for securing the front wheel to the back when using the U lock to lock the back wheel (through the back triangle) to a rack. You can't do much more with it, but extra length would mean it would be harder to carry around. These two items sold together are a great team and a great value package. The only area of contention with this package is the much-discussed flex bracket. For me it has worked out perfectly, but I hated it at first. As others have mentioned, the bracket is quite large so it sits out a long way from the frame. In addition, the way the lock slides in and out of the bracket requires quite a lot of extra space. For these reasons, I couldn't place it in the central triangle of the bike as I normally would, for fear of bashing the frame when taking the lock in and out of the bracket. However, there is a fair amount of flexibility in the way your lock is pointing when sat in the bracket, which allows for a lot of experimentation in where to put it. I tried A LOT of different placements and most of them just didn't look good and/or caused the lock to rub on my legs when pedaling. I was just about to give up when I found a position which works well on my bike. I've had no problems with the bracket slipping at all, and am very happy with the purchase. For this reason I give it 5 stars, but I can imagine how others with different models of bike would not have similar luck, and would be very frustrated and disappointed. For information: I have a Trek 7.2fx, and the position I found was at the front end of the cross bar, in front of the break cable (just before it threads out of the tube). The bracket is mounted on the right side of the cross bar (bracket pointing horizontal), with the lock pointing diagonally back and down towards the pedals. Due to the triangular shape of the cross bar here, the bracket sits well against it and doesn't slip. And due to the shape and balance of the lock, the way it is angled is how it would naturally dangle if you balanced it on your hand. This means that the bracket is not trying to fight to keep the lock upright, and therefore adding to the stability. It's not where I would normally mount a lock, but I now like the way it looks, and it feels very stable. I also didn't need to trim the strap for it to fit here.

Despite seeing some harsh reviews for this lock, I’m giving it five stars for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it’s prevented my bike from being stolen so far, and I can’t ask for more than that. I mean, it is sort of the entire reason I purchased the lock in the first place. With that in mind, there would have to be some meaningful drawbacks for the lock to have less than five stars. For the sake of comparison, my previous bike lock was a cheap plastic-coated cable with a key lock. While the length and flexibility was nice, it seemed too thin and flimsy, and I was frequently told that bicycle thieves could cut it with ease. Additionally, the locking mechanism frequently malfunctioned, making it difficult to unlock it. By contrast, every part of the Kryptonite U-lock is thicker and more robust. It simply looks and feels far more secure than the previous lock. The locking mechanism itself is also far superior. There is a sliding cover to protect the keyhole from the elements, an excellent feature for rainy Corvallis, OR. I have yet to notice any malfunctions or sticking points when unlocking it.My one minor complaint is that the entire U-shaped portion of the lock completely separates from its base whenever I unlock it. I understand that this ultimately makes it easier to put the lock on more parts of my bike or cover larger distances, but I rarely actually need the lock to completely separate; it would be just fine if it functioned like a normal padlock, with one side of the U-shape pivoting when unlocked. However, this is a minor quibble, and I just have to make sure that I’m holding both parts of the lock before I turn the key all the way.Anyway, the inclusion of a couple useful accessories outweighs the small “separation” drawback. The sturdy steel cable can be used in conjunction with the U-lock, which is handy to secure both of your wheels if your bike is going to be left unattended for a long time. There is also a small device that attaches to your bike frame, allowing you to easily holster the U-lock when you’re bicycling.Overall, this Kryptonite U-lock has done its job, and that’s all I can ask for. My bike hasn’t been stolen, and the lock is a huge upgrade over my last one. Finally, although I could have knocked off a star over the annoying issue of the lock separating, there are two useful accessories that easily outweigh the slight inconvenience. 5/5 stars.

SECURE - I use this product to lock up my bike around New York City. The U-lock feels strong and durable. It is also big enough that I can easily attach both my bike frame and one tire to a bike rack. With the added cable, I can then secure the other wheel by looping the cable through the unlocked wheel, putting one end of the cable through the other end, and then locking the loose cable end to the U-lock. The cable feels like it could be cut with very strong wire cutters, so it is more of a deterrent than anything else. However, I feel the U-lock/cable combination is a better solution for my bike than carrying around two U-locks.I’ve used it several times a week for the past three months and neither my bike not my tire has ever been stolen.BRACKET - Speaking of carrying around U-locks, I really like that this product comes with the FlexFrame Bracket. The Bracket easily attached to my bike without much work. It feels very secure on my bike frame. The U-lock easily attaches to the bracket and easily comes off by pressing the lever on the bracket. When the U-lock is attached to the bracket, it feels very secure. Neither the bracket nor the U-lock have ever fallen off my bike, despite much jostling.EASY LOCKING - Locking the bike is very quick and easy once you get the hang of it. Three things to be aware of: First, there is a keyhole cover that you have to swivel out of the way in order to access the keyhole. I think it is there to keep dirt out of the keyhole but I always just leave it exposed and have never had a problem. Second, when you unlock the U-lock it comes apart (intentionally) into two pieces- the straight bottom part that has the lock/keyhole, and the rounded U-bar part. One end of the U-bar curves slightly outward making a little ‘J’ shape. This means that the J end can only be slipped into the correct end of the straight bottom part. You have to put in the J end first, and then the straight end can be put into the straight bottom part. I like this feature because it adds another level of protection. Finally, just be aware that the key has to be in the unlock position in order to put the U-lock back together.OVERALLY IMPRESSION - I love this lock and can’t find anything wrong with it. It has held up well in the past three months and only has some minor cosmetic scratches.

A lot of complains on this lock seem to be aimed at its mounting kit, instead of the U-lock it self. So let me just say the mount works fine. If you can't get it to work for you, you haven't tried hard enough. In fact, based on the reviews found here, I knew this mount was probably going to be tricky, so I did a quick search online for some video tutorials - admittingly, the instructions that came with the lock was abysmal. The big 'trick' to installing the webbing turns out to be getting it fully soaked before install (put it in a cup of water for 1 minute), install it wet, and let it dry out completely afterwards (overnight). As the nylon webbing dehydrates it tightens up,what was fairly tight will become rock solid. The other problem some reviews here complain about is the limited position you can have with this lock/mount. Again not true. The mount can be unscrewed and loosen up to rotate a full 360 degrees. The lock's mounting pin has a screw, loosen that and you can rotate the pin 360 as well. Combined, these two 360 adjustments can make the lock fit in almost any direction imaginable. Finally the lock. Its heavy, its beefy, it should be difficult to crack with hand tools. However, Kryptonite themselves rated this thing a 6/10 in terms of security, so you know this U-lock isn't bomb proof. If someone really wants to get at it, they can break it for sure. Also since Kryptonite locks are so common, thieves would know these locks better than other brands too.Still, the U-lock and the chain together will make your bike a more difficult target, and as long as you are not riding some ultra fancy 6k+ bikes, this should suffice.edit:On a side note, this lock offers a great 'lost key' protection. Register your key number to Kryptonite's website, and if you ever lose your key(s), call their number and they will mail you a set of new key for free (first set anyway). Each additional set will cost you 3 bucks for S&H.However, while browsing their website, I learned that this lock/cable combination falls under their 'moderately secure' product segment. There are 2 more tiers above this, the 'more secure' Evolution Lock series, and the 'Ultimate security' New York Lock series. Choose your lock according to your needs.

Large enough to fit around the wheel and frame of my bike at any sort of bike-parking structure, and solid enough to make me feel safe leaving it in a high-traffic area in a big city. I've been using the lock for a about year while I commute every day, and I've never had a problem. My reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that if I have to lock my bike to a sign post rather than a bike parking rack, this u-lock doesn't always reach my around my wheel and fender. If the sign post is a closed rectangle, I can lock my wheel down, too. If the post has a rectangular front but then flays outward in the back, that makes it a little too wide for the u-lock to fit around.I've ended up either looking for a different post or just locking my frame to the post, which works, but it would be nice not to have to do that all the time, especially since the lock is on the larger side.Another reason for 4 stars: the attachment piece that holds the lock to the bike isn't the easiest to set up or use. I haven't had success finding a suitable spot for it on my bike where it's out of the way of my long legs (and I'm 6'2" with a big bike frame to match) so I just carry it in my bike bag, which isn't a big deal, but since this is one of the features of the product, I would have liked it to work better. The cable is easy to use, flexible and strong, and helps me lock my bike to my girlfriend's bike so we don't have to bring two locks all the time. It also solves the problem I mentioned above of locking my bike to posts that are larger than usual, although I don't always devote the extra space in my bag to bringing the cable, so that use doesn't come in handy all that often. If you have a nice bike, or you are in a place where bike theft is common, you really don't want to mess around with a cheap bike lock. The cost of this lock is much less than the price of a new bike, or new wheel, or a car, so the investment of slightly more dollars for this lock up front makes sense.

I purchased this to leave at the office, so I don't have to drag my lock back and forth. It is a pretty standard 'D' lock, with a short (4 foot) cable. It has a handy velcro loop to tidy up the cable into a loop. It comes with two keys and a bracket to attach it to your bike (which I have not used). This is the KryptoLok Series 2, it is part of the Sold Secure range, at the Silver level (NOTE: the cable isn't recognised as Sold Secure and could be easily cut, it will only help prevent somebody pinching your wheels). Sold Secure Silver level offers enhanced security, but with cost compromises from the highest level (Gold) and often lower weight than Gold. Bronze is only recommended to stop opportunist theft. If you need a secure cable, there are Silver and Gold options on offer. The replacement guarantee from Kryptonite is full of weasel words and reading through it I decided I would almost certainly not get my money back in the event of a theft. The limit is £800 in the UK for reference. In use the lock works well and I can bolt my frame securely and protect my wheels with the cable. I cannot get the lock around the fence post (looks like a scaffold pole diameter) and through both the rear wheel and the frame. The lock mechanism works well and is easy to unlock, unlike some I own. I thread one end of the cable through a wheel, through an eyelet and then round the other wheel and put the loop into the D lock before I close it. I ride a 20" mountain bike frame on 26" rims, but if you have something with a longer wheel base, you might find that 4 feet is too short. All in all, I am happy with the purchase. I knew the guarantee would be almost worthless, but it's a decent lock and protects my cheap unfashionable bike in a low risk environment. I would not use this to leave my bike in a public place all day e.g. rail station, bike racks at school, etc. You'd want Gold for that.

Keeping your bike protected is something all owners think about. To secure this piece of mind, it is best to use a lock. Whether it be for mere seconds or days, it is always best to lock it up to a secure object. Although no lock will deter one hundred percent of theft, I believe this lock is one of the better ones. It is strong and complicated enough to scare away most thieves. The ideal user of this product is anyone with a bike who is looking to deter theft. The lock comes with two essential items, the U-bar and the four foot cable. The steel bar is long and wide enough to cover the frame and one tire. The cable can then be used to wrap around the other tire to make it even more secure.Set up time is minimal as it usually takes less than a minute to install. This lock is also resistant to weather. It is always best to store your bike indoors, but if needed, the lock will be fine outdoors as you can slide the cover over the keyhole to reduce rust and dirt getting inside the lock. The lock is quite large, but it can be easily stored on your bike with the mount leaving no reason to have to carry it around in a bag. This mount is also quiet with little noise and rattle, leaving a smooth ride for you.To provide you with more piece of mind, the company offers a lifetime warranty on the lock if it has a defect. If you register your key set, there is no need to worry about paying for a new one as the first replacement is sent free of charge.Another positive is the affordability. At $30 you get a strong, sound lock that will do its job. This makes it a great lock for college students who do not necessarily have the means to buy an expensive lock. The reviews are even comparable to the more expensive locks. As previously stated, no bike is one hundred percent safe. However, you can feel more secure with the strength of a Kryptonite KryptoLok protecting your bike.

I had minor reservation about spending so much money on a bike lock, but I am glad I did. This lock holds up to the name Kryptonite, because it's made to stop Superman! Not really, I'm sure he could destroy this, but anyone short of superman has no chance. The U lock is VERY thick and sturdy. It has an adjustable mount which allows for easy attachment to the mounting bracket. The lock itself uses a unique key, and has a cover to help protect against rain and other elements. The flex cable as well is much thicker than some other cables I've had in the past. It comes with a velcro strap for easy storage. The bike mounting bracket itself, while it works, is a bit odd. It uses a mesh strap, which does allow for easily mounting to many different shapes and sizes, however it only relies on a rubber piece to prevent sliding. I haven't had any issue, but I do worry that this could be a problem in the future. The mount, while a bit more complicated than it could be, does allow for a fair bit of versatility, which is nice. This lock actually comes with a warranty that I found to be pretty great, however, there are some things to know ahead of time in regards to it. It covers up to $500 of a motorized vehicle, or $1500 on a bicycle, and will cover either A) Your insurance deductible, or B) value, based on which is cheaper. You have to register the product within 15 days of purchase, and the registration costs $10. As well this warranty only lasts 1 year, and only covers thefts due to product failure, IE the lock being cut etc.Part of the reason for my purchase of this lock, was due to the warranty, I just wish I knew ahead of time that it costs $10 extra and is only good for 1 year. I am still very satisfied with the lock, however, and felt that I've gotten what I paid for, as opposed to buying some cheaper cable for $5 or so.

I bought this lock on a recommendation from The Wirecutter group test. My previous bike lock was a combination+cable lock. I only found out how rubbish it was when my bike got stolen. So, for my new bike, I wanted to be sure of getting the best lock.Frankly, if it wasn't for the recommendation, I would never have looked at a D-Lock like this, since I had assumed they were too heavy to carry around. What I didn't realise is that it comes with a handy adapter that allows you to mount the lock to your bike frame when not in use. This works very well for me - it holds the lock very securely. No wobble, no rattle, and you really don't notice it's there until you need it.Some reviewers on this page have said they found the adapter impossible to fit.I must admit that I struggled at first, because I am a man and I don't like to read instructions. When I eventually did read the instructions, it all became clear, and I had the adapter fitted in under 5 minutes (it's a plastic mount attached to a nylon tether; you loop the tether through the mount, and tighten an allen nut to secure the tether. The secret is to push down the plastic against the frame as firmly as possible so that the nut engages - then it's easy). Also, there are 2 keys included (just in case you lose one). I'd recommend storing the spare one somewhere safe! The only quibble I have is with the 'insurance'. The fine print is so full of exclusions that it's basically worthless. If you do a little Googling, you'll find numerous stories of the company not paying out in the event of theft. But search a little further, and you'll see videos of just how much noise and effort it takes to get through this lock - rest assured that *nobody* is going to cut this lock without attracting a *lot* of attention.

I purchased this lock after reading that Oxford is the bike theft capital of Europe. I was unaware that such prizes were awarded and I'm sure that Kryptonite fund them in order to boost panic. In any case it worked for me and after doing some research I picked this lock. It seems to be the entry level serious lock. I've watched youtube videos of people having to try to cut through having lost their keys and clearly it means business.Having the cable along with the D-Lock is the best way forward. It allows you to lock another bike to yours, secure the front tire, and also loop round a second fixed post. The D-Lock is solid but light enough to be practical. The key system works well but does require regular oiling to ensure that it stays free moving. A couple of the 3 star reviews have noted that the lock seems to stick after a few months. A small spray of WD40 once a month will fix this and can easily be incorporated into general bike maintenance. The key is easy to use in cold weather, just make sure that you always push it to the very bottom of the lock before twisting or apparently you can damage the barrel. The mount is excellent, I have mine mounted onto the vertical bar of the seat tube and that seems to work very well. Some people seem to have struggled to mount the bracket. I have no idea why, it's incredible easy and has the advantage that the mount position can be moved it you add more accessories or simply feel the need to change the position. The Amazon price was the best I could find online and the Prime delivery sealed the deal. I would definitely recommend this lock, if my bike gets stolen now it's likely to be my own fault for drunkenly locking it to something silly, like a policeman.

I purchased this lock for use at a university to keep my mountain bike safe. I find the lock to be perfect as it being longer than most U-locks helps me out a lot because my mountain bike has an XL frame which common U-locks don't fit. The only issue I had was the cable which was too short to run through my wheels which have quick releases. After receiving this, I had to use my older cable lock as a secondary lock to keep my wheels safe. The mount is a great add on as it makes it much easier to carry! I had a few issues with the keys, but I will explain later the solution to preventing issues...Pros:-solid lock; seems really hard to cut,and deters thiefs from even attempting to steal your bike-mount makes life easier when biking without a backpack-easy to open and close if you operate keys properlyCons:-the little metal mount on the "U" part of the lock loosens over time(not a big issue, you just have to push it sometimes so the lock locks)-key is pretty fragile and can break easily-cable is too shortThe Key:-make sure you push it ALL THE WAY IN before turning-rotate a FULL 180 DEGREES to unlock or lock-if the key does not come out, DO NOT pull or it could snap, just wiggle it or rotate it the 180 degrees again till it comes out with ease(DO NOT FORCE)-Make sure to push the metal mount piece on the "U" part of the lock all the way up as it takes up space that the lock needs to lock as it WILL NOT CLOSE unless the metal piece is flushBesides these few minor issues and the cable being too short, I'd recommend this lock to everyone looking for a solid lock to protect their bikes! Extremely easy to use and they even guarantee that your bike will be safe! Hope this helps!

We purchased two of these locks to protect our investment in our new bikes. As our bikes are rather expensive it called for a good lock that would leave me with peace of mind when leaving the bikes outside at the supermarket etc. These locks do the trick. When not in use the lock can be attached to the bike in a number of places because the holder that comes included with the lock is flexible enough to fit several areas of the bike. I have mind attached just below the seat pointing toward the back wheel, where the lock never gets in the way of my legs, mounting or dismounting and importantly my panniers. The lock is operated by key which is sturdy but lightweight and small enough that I am happy to have it with my house key,car key etc. A little plastic swivel on the lock protects the keyhole from rust and more importantly rainwater and therefore frost that can leave you unable to operate the lock in cold weather. The steel wire that comes included means that in standard bike parking spots, you can attach the frame of the bike to the bike holder, a street light or some such thing, which the lock itself does not always allow for. That means a thief cannot just unhinge your wheel (and therefore the lock itself) and take off with the rest of the bike.My only complaint is that it is difficult to secure the lock holder (that's only in use when the bike is not locked) is very difficult to make stay in place when attached to a vertical part of the body. Gravity eventually gets a hold of it and it starts to slip down after some use. But, tightening that holder once every two months takes two minutes and is not enough to make me in any way regret this purchase.

No one has tried to steal my bike at least, which may be making this a pointless review, but I'll give it a shot anyway. I am very confident in the lock itself, its well made and very sturdy. Almost everyone on my campus has this lock, and with good reason, although it certainly confuses me sometimes. The cable...calling it a kryptoflex cable may be overselling it, and I am not the type who cares enough about my bike to use it. However, its definitely a strong cable, and a nice addition for those who need some extra confidence in the safety of their bike. The mounting the holder onto the bike is a great struggle, and you will spend a long time doing it. Take care and apply a lot of pressure. However, once its on, it stays on. It is not easy to put the lock onto the holder, its extremely tight. Pulling it off requires a lot of force and I've hurt my hand a couple of times by slamming it into the bike frame after the lock finally comes loose, although maybe I'm just a weak pansy. The proper cyclist type is probably athletic enough where any of this nitpicking won't bother them. Finally, there is a little plastic shroud that covers the keyhole. I've always covered it by rotating the plastic over it, and every time I've come back to my bike, the keyhole is exposed. In short, its useless. The key is also a little bit dodgy, I've had to struggle with it refusing enter the keyhole or turn properly. I'll just chalk it up to the build quality requiring more precision than I am capable of.Closing thoughts: It has some grievances, but for the price it really is a very strong, reliable lock. The holder may or may not be worth the effort to attach.

I purchased this item for my son to use on the bike we purchased for him to celebrate his 13th birthday, which with its allow wheels, alloy frame and disk brakes I felt warranted the purchase of a capable lock to protect an expensive purchase. On arrival, the item felt very heavy, but reassuringly heavy and robust. It comes with two keys, with the option to use a key safe facility to obtain a replacement: oh dear, restricted to the US and Canada only, so no good for us. So onto installation. Personally I found it a bit fiddly to install, but we did fix it onto the frame in the one place it amost fitted; thankfully whilst the locking bar didn't fit perfectly into the bike frame, the mounting mechanism can be adjusted to allow you to insert the locking bar in at an adjustable angle which does not interfere with my son's pedalling motion. So how does it perform? Fine the locking bar works as it should with the added benefit of the flex being inserted through the frame and wheel(s); providing that you take the front wheel off and place is parallel to the rear wheel. It would deter all but the most determined thief from stealing it.So why only 4 stars rather than 5? I suppose I waivered a bit, but whilst it is reassuringly heavy and I am sure strong, it feels a bit too heavy, even without the flex and I suppose the lack of the key safe element made me go for 4 rather than 5 stars for this product. Would I purchase another one for our other bikes if needed? Yes I think that I would, certainly it more that provides the security that I feel essential to secure an expensive bicycle and it would be hard to better at the price.

This is a great lock, which feels remarkably sturdy and good quality considering the price, and the bracket that comes with it to attach it to the bike is very helpful. I also like the cover over the keyhole, which will help stop glue being put in there or the lock seizing due to extreme weather conditions. The 'cord' that comes with the lock could be longer - it doesn't wrap round as much of the bike as perhaps I'd like, but then there was an option to buy this lock with a longer cord, but I chose not to.As far as I'm aware, this bike lock hasn't even been worked on by any thief, but that is because the bike stays in my flat during the day,and is only locked up in two very safe locations when in use (A very middle/upper class leisure centre early in the morning, and at a secluded university campus on a business park, both where everyone drives an expensive BMW or Merc)When buying bike locks the thing to remember is that if a thief wants to get your bike, they will. There are some very powerful handheld tools around now, which would break through even the most expensive locks. That said, do read advice articles on where and how to lock up your bike. Locks are used more as time consumption against thiefs or a deterrent rather than actual prevention of the theft of your bike. Also register your bike on a national database (Such as BikeRegister) and put a sticker on your bike to show this, also acts as a turn off to those who would want to sell your bike quickly as it enables the bike to be tracked by the police. There's more to bike safety than a lock.
