I've had this lock for almost a year now. First thing, all of the reviews complaining about the clamp being on the wrong side are just foolish. The clamp can easily be changed around via a simple bolt, and it can be made to fit any need. I've had the lock clamped to my bike the entire time and it works great and doesn't slide around or fall off. You'll also read a lot of reviews about this thing being broken. The thing is nowadays there are mini tools that can cut through just about anything, and quickly. I view this thing as more of a deterrent than a 100% full proof lock. Therefore I've used this lock combined with a thick chain lock to keep my bike secured in downtown Fort Lauderdale, and at the beach. It's always been kept outside. To put that in perspective, when I moved to the beach 4 out of 5 bikes were stolen from my building in less than 2 months... mine was the only one that wasn't. To be fair, I noticed most of the bikes had minimal security, such as small basic cable locks only, which were quickly cut (most of them were taken during the day!).Another thing is that where possible, you'll want to keep the keyhole pointed downward. I had his thing in the rain for so long with no issues, but one time the keyhole was pointed up and a heavy rain came through, and it was full of rust and pouring out just the same. Nevertheless, it's still held up and still does. But since the rain I've had the occasional complication with the lock mechanism. All in all, for the price, this is a great lock in my mind.

If you care enough to buy a lock for your bike in the first place, then you should care enough to get a lock that works better and easier than another lock, on top of giving you great security, so you will get into a habit of employing it all the time and not be lazy because the lock takes more effort to use. Lazy? Yes, and laziness is the biggest reason to not use a lock you bought to protect your bike. Just having a strong U-lock isn't good enough. You have to use it. An unused lock is the worst security feature a lock can have. Easier, with top security features is just better. You'll use this Kryptonite lock and that will save your bike more times than you will ever know.I put it in the same realm as building a better mouse trap.Having returned an On-Guard 5510 Mini U-Lock with Additional Security Cable (4 feet) to Wal-Mart where I had bought that lock, I chose this Kryptonite lock instead because, although On-Guard claims to be "obsessed" about security they sure aren't when it comes to product design. Bottom line is if you have a lock that is not as easy for you to use, then you will of course use it less and take a bigger risk with your bike becoming a crime statistic (stolen).Amazon had Wal-Mart beat on price for this Kryptonite lock, too. Comparing Amazon's service to Wal-Mart's wouldn't really help, since Wal-Mart forgot what service is years ago, and Amazon has consistently provided me with better service in all areas for many years now. As a lock, this is decent. It's reliable and tough enough for areas like Ann Arbor. Any higher risk though, like New York, and you'll want to get a beefier lock and preferably with double bolting. Anyway, I've been using this lock daily for more than a year and the mechanism has held up well. It's been dropped on the road a ton of times and still works like new. Just be sure to lubricate it regularly, like monthly, or else it gets dry and difficult to get the key in all the way. One of my friends let his go dry and spent like half an hour trying to jam the key in before I got there with the WD-40. Speaking of which, the keys are nice and strong. The lock is good, but I can't give this five stars because the part of the bracket that stays on the bike cracked off after two months of use and I had always treated it with care before. Because of the failure of that part, the lock fell on the ground and the plastic slidey thing on the shackle broke off as well. Also, the covering over the shackle became badly cracked so I had to wrap it up with duct tape to avoid scratching my bike. The summer after that, I restored the bike and gave it a new paint job in the process so I devised a way to hold the lock without chipping the paint (pictures below). It now knocks on the rack and not the frame and it doesn't have to bounce out of the basket anymore.

I guess they finally fixed the clamp problem, because I was able to use it the intended way. I only use the clamp when I don't have my backpack on me, so I can't speak for longevity. It does seem to be sturdy, though. The barrel turns freely when I operate the lock, given that you've inserted the key properly. No issues there. My model looks slightly different than the one pictured, and came with longer oval keys that have a solid feel to them. The lock itself is relatively heavy but that's to be expected. MUCH better than the Wally World locks. I feel confident leaving my bike alone with this lock, however, I do live in an area where bikes are not stolen that often, and I also never leave my bike for periods longer than 2-3 hours. You may want a stronger one if you live in a bigger city or leave your bike outside. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS pair a U-lock with a chain or wire lock with a separate padlock when leaving your bike for extended periods of time. I cannot begin to describe the way people at my university lock their bikes up. Despite having decent locks, they somehow manage to make it scream "PLEASE STEAL ME". Please don't be careless; you're the only one that will get burned from it. This lock is definitely worth the price. Very satisfied!

It's fairly easy to get this lock onto the bike, although depending on your frame and other attachments you may only have a small area in which to attach it.As others have stated, the key/lock mechanism can be a bit annoying as it will only lock/unlock if you have put the key in and turned it perfectly. That sounds obvious for a key lock, but there is a lot of room for error with other standard locks like door locks. I've had this thing for well over a year (2?) now, and it still takes me time to lock or unlock it frequently. That being said, it still does its job as a U-Lock. For that alone, it gets 4 stars.Having two keys is also kind of nice.I sometimes carry a different set of keys if I know I only need to get into the house and lock my bike, as opposed to the other set that has home, car, office, desk, mailbox, and whatever else keys.BUT, depending on what you need to lock your bike to, and again the size of your bike frame, I find it difficult to lock my frame and tire to bike corrals (and other things). I have to figure out the angle juuuuust right to make it work. This happens all the time.

Had I read any reviews I would have bought a different lock.Pros:Discreet, robust, and compact.I especially like the included bracket for mounting the lock to your bike frame when cycling.Cons:KEYS - Inserting the key and turning the lock in a swift fashion is not something I'm able to do with this lock. It takes several attempts to get the key all the way in, then a few more attempts to successfully turn the lock open or closed. This dramatically reduces its value in my eyes. With the lock containing several internal components, when cycling over bumps, even with soft landing off the curb, these internal components make a hell of a racket, which after a few rides can get a bit annoying.Overall I think its ok value for money, the brand is reliable and nobody has tried to steal my bike... Yet.Personally I would try to find something that didn't rattle when attached to the frame, and that allowed for a smooth locking and unlocking.

I suspect the mounting problems is more pebbar (problem exists between bike and rider) since this went on my bike within 5 minutes without any problems at all. It's not hard to look at your bike, look at the mount and figure it out. Now granted I have it mounted upright since that seemed like the most stable position and some people may not have room to mount it that way but honestly it mounts fine. You can do it, just mess around with it for a minute. The key is a little sticky at first but after a few turns it loosens up.I don't live in a super heavy crime area hence the basic need for this simple lock but if your bike is stolen it isn't kryptonite's fault. If someone wants a bike bad enough they'll get it.If you don't lock it properly and use a two-lock system you're just asking someone to take it from you. People are jerks, jerks who can't do puzzles.

I bought this lock because I use my bike daily and want it to be safe whenever I leave it alone. As a student at UC Davis, bike theft is a pretty real concern to me.One major reason I chose this lock was because it was a U-lock, which is supposedly harder to remove than chains and other types of locks. I'm not sure whether or not this is true because I have no experience with removing locks, but nobody ever damaged or removed this lock and I've owned it for about 3 years now. Moreover, it did not rust the way an old Bell u-lock I bought did. Despite the seasons of rain my lock has endured, it has not even begun to rust and I've never had an issue with that on this lock.I think this is great!

Excellent padlock for bicycle security. I ride a lot of bicycles both to go to work and to go to the center to study and that is why I often need to leave my bicycle in different places, as I have a bicycle that I believe to be very good, all safety is welcome, that's why I purchased this padlock together with a steel cord to lock the frame and bicycle wheels. The padlock is great, I choose to carry it in the backpack but it comes with a support that you can put on your bike, the padlock comes with two keys, and has extreme quality, resistance and security, passing the security so that you will leave the bike anywhere and be calm, I loved the product and recommend it to other people.

I've had this lock for about a month and so far I've still got a bike. Like some of the other reviewers, I couple this lock with a thick cable to wrap around the frame/tires. It's big enough for my large framed bike and I like that it comes with a frame mount for the lock. Beware though, that red button you see in the product pic is meant to release the lock from the mount, but it's super flimsy and is hardly functional. Also, other reviewers mentioned that the frame mount was attached incorrectly (backwards) however I haven't found that to be the case with my lock.

EDIT: Two days after I wrote the 2 star review below, my bike was ALMOST stolen. The lock showed evidence of being cut with a saw in three separate locations but the perpetrator obviously gave up before getting all the way through. Despite any inconvenience with the lock sticking, I'm very grateful I had this lock on my bike. I just ordered the same lock again as a replacement.Original review:After about of month of multi-daily use, the locking mechanism gets stuck about 50% of the time. It opens after jiggling the key a few times, but is inconsistent.

I had a previous Kryptonite keeper which I wore out - the lock where you insert the key became hard to turn and I was worried that my bike would be locked up and I would be unable to turn the key to release the lock. So I got this placement - it already fit with the same holder that was attached to my bike frame already. This emplacement works fine, the key unlocks it easily, and it has one improvement on the old version in that it is slightly longer by and inch or two, which makes it easier to lock the frame and front wheel around a pole on the street.

Excellent quality u-bolt lock. It's easy to use one-handed because the key stays in when it's turned to the unlock position. All the metal parts are covered in a sturdy paint/rubber material.I didn't give five stars because the bracket isn't very strong or adjustable, and the red button on it seems to serve no real purpose. Maybe when the bracket or lock are much older, there'll be some risk of it slipping out, but since mine is only a month old, the fact that the bracket can latch onto the lock is an annoyance, not a feature.

I am an occasional bicyclist with an inexpensive bike.I just needed a lock for when i went to a local store or casual ride. This lock is perfect for that. I have used it a dozen times already and have been absolutely thrilled with it.The key and lock work perfectly. The size is great to either lock to a pole or another bike.I haven't used the clip because i have a basket but I'm sure its also great.Definitely would recommend to someone who doesn't want to spend a lot of money but wants the security of a strong, safe lock.

It's a pretty good lock. Feels secure, the only reason it lost a star is because the lock is kinda finicky, you have to insert the key just right and sometimes try several times to open and close it. It can be kind of frustrating if you're in a hurry, but not a huge deal. It's still a quality product. I've been using it every day for about 2-3 months now as my back up and travel lock. It probably gets locked and unlocked about 3-5 times per day as I go to the store and class. I use a huge on guard chain for home and work.
