There has been a real rise in the number of people relying on coffee machines that take individual capsules of coffee. This is incredibly convenient but perhaps doesn't offer the most environmentally friendly way to make coffee. This Krups machine is a traditional espresso maker where you place your coffee of choice into the "grouphead" (which is what, I am reliably informed, is the proper name for the metal cup and handle which holds the coffee). This is a really compact little machine, but it packs a lot in to a small size: it takes up to 1 and a half litres of water, which is about three pints, and the machine builds up a great bit of pressure to force the boiling water through the coffee and produce an intense coffee. If you don't like really strong espresso, you are well catered for, as you can vary the amount of coffee in each cup to make longer, Americano-style coffees. The steam nozzle, which you can use to heat and froth milk for you cappuccino, latte and flat whites, works very well and is very easy to wipe clean. The water storage unit is removable and easy to rinse and clean, as well. The coffee that this machine makes is excellent. The high pressure means that water is forced through the coffee quickly, producing a fresh, bright coffee with none of the bitterness that you get if the water trickles through too slowly, which is a problem with some of the capsule-based machines I have tried in the past.On the downside, as the machine is quite small, it isn't particularly heavy, so it tends to wobble and move when you remove the grouphead and reattach it, so you have to keep one hand on the machine to stop it from toppling. I suppose that could be fixed by making the machine larger or heavier, so I appreciate that you this is a drawback you have to accept with much smaller machines like this... but my capsule-based machine is only marginally larger and stays in one place! The grouphead is also quite stiff, even after a week of constant use, but I can live with that given that the machine needs to have a secure fit to allow the boiling water to force through the coffee quickly and cleanly.Overall: this is a great small machine that produces tasty, well-made barista-style coffee. It's a compact design which is great for the smaller kitchen where counter space is limited, but that does lead to some issues with the machine being slightly unsteady, but it's a small price to pay!

The Krups is a smart looking unit, in a combination of brushed metal, chrome and black plastic. It feels well constructed - mostly from plastic, but high quality plastic. It is light and easy to move about without feeling flimsy. It's quite small, and takes up a surprisingly small amount of worktop space. It's simple to operate, having only has 3 controls - an/off button, a brew/steam heat selector and a brew/steam activation dial.It comes with a combined ground coffee scoop and tamper, which allows you to fill one of the removable filter cups easily and with a minimum of mess. The only part of the process which is a little tricky is inserting the coffee holder into the machine and tightened. It does take quite a bit of force to get it properly tight, and you do need to keep a firm hold on the machine while you do so, or it will simply spin around on the counter. This force is necessary to ensure a steam-tight fit, so all the energy is directed through the coffee and not out the top of the machine. There's a cup warmer on the top large enough for 2-4 espresso sized cups. It gets warm, but not too hot to touch. The water reservoir is a decent size, and a clever folding handle makes it simple to lift out and replace without spillage. As far as creating espresso, it works wonderfully well. The coffee looks and tastes like espresso should look and taste - obviously dependent on the coffee you're using. Obviously it's not as effortless as using one of the pod type machines, but it does work out much more cost effective over the long term, and you get to feel like a real Barista while you're doing it. You just have the slight additional faff and emptying and cleaning the filter cup afterwards. Two are supplied though, so you can make two cups and leave the washing up for later. The milk steamer works fine - one of my first requests was a Babyccino for my 9 y/o daughter - it came out looking like a professional product after I'd sprinkled a little cocoa on top. She was very impressed - and she is quite a fuss-pot!When you're done, it's very easy to clean, with a removable drip tray at the front and a metal plate which sits on top of it. You can clean the steam spout by immersing it in water and activating the steam jet.In summary, a great little coffee maker, and the only slight annoyance is the amount of force needed to lock in the coffee filter holder.

This was the first 'real' coffee maker I've used, having previously used 'pod' machines, and I am generally pleased with the result. The coffee is easy to brew and nice - with a creamy froth even when black. The milk frother can both froth and heat the milk, although I found it a little fiddly and struggled to combine this back into my coffee. The steam nozzle and tamper were easy to operate and empty. I used the 'double' filter, which took a scoop and a bit of coffee, to make a single coffee; this compares for me when using a cafetiere to a single equivalent scoop for the same mug of coffee. I had to remove the drip tray to fit a regular mug under the steam nozzle, and while this is par for the course on an espresso machine it would be great if it were otherwise. The machine continually powers water through the filter, until you turn it off. This is great for making the perfect, custom, mug of coffee, but less helpful in the mad morning rush when the machine can't be left unattended. The water reservoir is located at the rear of the machine and easy to remove and refill. The reservoir has an innovative lid which transforms into a handle, opening the lid when picked up by the handle, and helping close it when returned to the machine. I have a gripe with the location of the power switch, which unlike all the other controls is on the side of the machine. This made it harder to place the machine close to other devices, taking up more room. (The switch is on the same side as the fold-out milk frother, so potentially requires the same space.) The switch itself can be used to turn the device on and off, but the device will power itself off after a reasonable delay if you forget, which is great. Most coffee I brew to drink at home will now be made with this machine. Goodbye coffee pods.

Krups is, of course, a very famous manufacturer of coffee machines. The products are made in Germany and we expect, and get, German efficiency and excellent quality. I got this machine to replace my old and much cheaper De Longhi machine which I had been using for a number of years. This Krups machine was probably twice the price of my old machine and I did wonder whether the higher price could be justified. The answer is yes - this machine made a really lovely cup of coffee. It made the coffee quickly but as another reviewer mentioned, if you want a cappuccino, there is a delay between pouring the coffee and frothing the milk. This was not a major problem, merely a slight inconvenience. There is a good sized water tank at the back of the machine. If you are using the machine daily, you simply need to top the tank up but if you want to refill the tank it is easy to lift the tank out and refill it. I found the filter holder slightly awkward to insert - sometimes it went in easily, sometimes not. Because of these two slight problems I have reduced my stars from 5 to 4. If I could I would have given it 4.5 stars I would have. As far as the coffee is concerned I would give it 5 stars as this is undoubtedly the best tasting coffee I have ever made at home. Indeed it is probably one of the best cups of coffee I have tasted anywhere. I must also say that it is much cheaper and more environmentally friendly to use a machine such as this rather than buying pods. It is vital that we all do our bit for the environment.

I’ve been quite impressed by this little espresso maker. The build quality is pretty good, a combination of both shiny and brushed metal, and plastic. It doesn't seem to show fingerprint smudges badly. My old espresso machine – bought some years ago now – had a water tank that filled from the top into an inbuilt tank with a screw top, this one has a removable tank that’s easier to refill and keep clean. The machine has a neat, compact size that would work well in most kitchen areas. Unlike my bean to cup machine – which is a space hog, and so tall (with a top opening bean compartment) that we can’t fit it in under the top cabinets in our kitchen. In addition to its space saving form factor, the machine has a built-in storage tray on the top that’s ideal for storing demi tasses. There are two inserts for the filter for this machine - single and double espresso holders. The supplied measuring scoop/tamper provides a scoop that is an exact fit for the single filter, and then compacts with the back. It's a bit light, but seems to do a decent job. The milk frother works well – using chilled skimmed/semi-skimmed milk and a chilled, metal, straight-sided jug (not supplied). The frother spout isn’t the easiest thing to clean.

We have had a compact coffee pod machine on the kitchen worktop for a year or so now and it has been really nice to have a variety of coffees on demand. The downside is the environmental was caused by the pods. Rather than pods, this machine takes ground coffee and so you can immediately cut down on plastic waste, but it is more of a chore making the coffee. The scoop is useful, but I had to use it over the sink as I found I was also losing a few grounds over the edge when tamping. I wish the tamping tool had been separate and made of metal, as you are really supposed to compact the grounds very tightly and the plastic tamper did not seem tough enough for that.It is a little awkward to insert the coffee holder and it takes quite a bit of force to lock it in place. After that, it is easy enough to produce the espresso. Then it is down to you to make the coffee into your chosen drink, whereas the pod machine did more of that for you.The tank is too large - very few households will get through 1.5L of coffee in a day and you won't want to leave the water standing in the tank. For occasional coffee drinkers, I would probably go for a smaller unit so as not to waste space on the worktop.

If you love to have coffee at home and want to greatly improve upon what you can do with the standard method thenyou will like this Krups coffee machine very much. It has a small footprint, is finished in piano black colour and is visually well designed. Personally I find it intuitive to use, but for those whom don't find it so there is an instruction manual. There are copious amounts of enumerated high quality diagrams to support the instructions text. The water heats up very quickly, whether is be for the expresso or steam selection. There is very little noise during operation. My reasons for 4 stars instead of 5 are: At this stage inserting the coffee holder/handle into the machine needs sucha large force that it needs one to counter-hold the machine to stop it moving sideways; and whilst on such a subject I would say that what the machine needs is larger/stronger rubber feet because even pushing the toggle type - (return to default position type) - On/Off switch causes the machine to slide when the Krups is mounted on a typical formica type worktop.

At £150, this is not hugely expensive compared to other coffee machines. If you wish to grind your own beans, you will need to get a grinder, but you could simply use ground coffee. I will add that either way, it is better for the environment and cheaper to run than a pod machine which seems to be the current popular way to make coffee. With this machine, you can design precisely the cup you prefer, much like an old-fashioned espresso model, so you need to get to know your chosen coffee blend, the amount of water and coffee ratio that suits you. You can then make fine adjustments as required for each person. The milk frother works really well for those who like a macchiato, cafe latte or cappuccino. You can even make a babycchino without the coffee if you wish.It is easy to use and I think it is real value for money for the output. I would recommend it for coffee lovers. As with any Krups machine, it is well and solidly built.

I have always preferred coffee made through a pressure machine--you get good flavour with no bitterness, as long as you use fresh water and strong coffee. For more girly coffee, there is the option of steaming and frothing milk to make chinos etc. This is a really classy looking machine in black and chrome finishes and is not as mighty as I expected, in fact it looks quite neat on the kitchen worktop and is not much bigger than our pod machine. The instructions are clear and the machine is easy to use if you do not have dexterity problems such as arthritis. The coffee tamper and the filters can be difficult to fit. As with pod machines, you can adjust the settings for 1 or 2 cups.I think that if you want a mess-free coffee quickly, use a pod machine, but if you are willing to take a bit more time and trouble, you can't beat coffee made in a machine like this one.

I've upgraded from a cafetiere to this very good coffee machine, a move I have always resisted until now. It is more time consuming to use than a cafetiere but the results are worthwhile and the coffee very nicely frothed which makes it feel better and taste better, I think. I've got in the habit of preparing the coffee holder while the machine warms up which does take a while.I've learnt that a good tamping down gives a stronger more frothy coffee. It's a bit fiddly to clean but so was the cafetiere.I can't stand the idea of expensive single-use pods and I get to use exactly what coffee I want in the quantity I want which is ideal and saves on running costs. There must be a long-term gain here over a pod or capsule machine.I'm a happy convert.

The design of this espresso maker is great, for the fact that it's pretty compact and looks stylish without being much bigger than a kettle. However the design is not the easiest to use, in fact I am still getting used to it after nearly a week. Getting good espresso from it comes fairly easy after a few trys, the only difficulty is getting the filter part to click in place properly, but the actual process is fairly simple! The milk part is easy to froth, but I still can't get much heat into it.

I love coffee, I am very particular & this little machine is good value & packs a powerful expresso. I was surprised at how light it was compared to other machines. The filters are easy to use & clean by popping them in the dishwasher. The coffee delivery is smooth & fills my kitchen with that fresh coffee smell. The only downside is cleaning the steam nozzle after use, the milk seems to stick to the nozzle and you have to use a scourer to remove the milk. But overall great value & recommended.

This is a lovely looking unit but newcomers beware.Using fairtade filter coffee the taste is good though a little weak. Other blends my produce more favorable results. The tray is high and it's not possible to put a standard mug or latte glass beneath. So if you dont already have small espresso cups or glasses removing the drip tray allows bigger cups but adds drips. It will need cleaning after every use, especially the milk steamer as the milk clings to the nozzle.Very happy overall

This strong and sturdy espresso maker machine gives the opportunity to make a cup of coffee at home. The machine is easy to use, although clear instructions are also provided. The cleaning isn't too bad as the components can be taken apart, but it is still a little involved. It's also possible to make longer drinks, such as lattes, and it's possible to make two drinks at the same time. It's not the quietest of machines, but the coffee is decent and it's all pretty quick to use.
