Wanted a pair of bins that would enable me to identify birds at reasonable distance (so needed good magnification) but would not be too heavy to hand hold steadily; and would also fall within my budget. After some research I went for the Kowa SV 12x50.Yes, Kowa make some very expensive binoculars and other optical equipment; but I am not interested in the high end at this time (I may turn into the kind of birder who takes off for the Outer Hebrides at 5 min. notice on the rumour of a 3* vagrant, but I am not there quite yet; if I do get there, that is when I will consider paying 4 figures for optics); what I wanted was a really good pair of affordable bins so that I could distinguish Little Grebe from juvenile Coot, and Shoveler from Mallard even in eclipse plumage, at 100 metres +.These are those bins.I can hand hold them steadily, being used to an equally weighty (.75Kg) pair of old Russian 8x40s. They have a reasonable field of view for the level of magnification. The light gathering is excellent, giving a clear, bright image even toward sunset. Many of the birds I've seen since buying these binoculars I would not have been able to identify with any certainty using my old pair, just because the light level would have been too low.Only small downside is that with very high contrast and high light levels, one does see a little chromatic aberration (think distant mute swan adult on black mud at high noon - purple fringing appears). But this is not a problem for general use.And it's very nice to have a pair of bins that will not fog up even when taken from a relatively cool cycle saddlebag and applied to much hotter face at noon in high summer.Highly recommended to the birder on a budget.

Great binoculars. I really like the finish on these bins - they really have a quality build, with smooth, well damped focusing and very firm diopter, which doesn't move accidentally, but is smooth when being set. Optical strengths are sharpness and very low C.A. Contrast is decent, but not remarkable. Due to the 10x32 formula, they are not as bright as 42mm bins, but for daytime use, I don't miss that at all. I have some 9x63 bins for very low light, but they are massive and weigh over a kilo, so horses for courses. They're a bit longer than some 8x32 or 8x30 bins, but still quite a small form which is easily stashed in the top of my camera bag.I particularly like the fact that the focus knob is closed off where it joins to the body - some other makes have focusers which are open at the bottom and can accumulate dust and sand. I wanted a waterproof bin for use while photographing birds and seals on the beach, so I wanted to be able to wash them under a tap on returning home. the waterproofing allows that and the closed focuser will prevent sand wearing the focus gear.A robust binocular with a great view and at current price of approx £200 I could say, very good value. I tested these against Nikon Prostaff and Nikon Monarch 7 bins and preferred the view through these Kowa SVs... I was very lucky and got them for £98 on special, so brilliant value at that price.

I purchased a pair of these binoculars already having a much larger pair that I use for motor racing but are a bit big when walking. These fold up really small as both tubes are hinged and this means they fit in to a jacket pocket with ease. The quality of the optics is really very good on a sub £100 pair of bins. They are as bright as you could expect from the small 25mm lenses, they have a nice sharp bright image and the focus is both light, quick and fast to focus.I usually rate binoculars that dial in to the subject you want to see really fast and easily to be good and these don't fail. They have good eye relief, no black fringes and give a crisp, bright image and the focus wheel is easy to use.Drawbacks - none really, the only slight drawback is no objective lens covers but you can purchase some if necessary. So, in short, good quality lenses, thick rubber coating, light, small and very handy for those moments when out walking when you see a bird in the distance and wonder what it is!Read full review...

I wanted a new pair of binoculars that gave a reasonable magnification for seeing objects not too far away - such as birds from a bird hide but which were not too heavy. My search included checking out many options from the likes of the RSPB shops. I couldn't find one that would give me clear vision through both eyes, with easy and accurate focusing, and a bright image, that didn't cost many hundreds of pounds. Until these. They are great. They feel well made, They are quite light, being only 8x magnification rather than 10x and you feel a part of the scene when you look through them, while other binoculars in the same price range always made it seem like you were looking through binoculars (ifyou see what I mean).

These binoculars have proved to be an excellent purchase. I am a keen birdwatcher, and needed a more powerful pair of binoculars, as due to an eye condition I have been having difficulty using my telescope. I am very pleased with the quality of these optics, they are easy to focus, sharp and clear, and let in plenty of light. Considering their high magnification they are not unduly heavy. I was also pleased that they came with a wide and comfortable neck strap. Good value for money. All in all, I am very satisfied.

We have just started bird watching and we wanted a pair of bins that gave us decent magnification but that did not weigh a tonne. these glasses are superb perfectly clear lightweight with great megnification. I feel we only got thes bins at this price as kowa are new to the market a branded pair of this quality would cost much more.i would recommend anybody to buy a pair of these bins.

Fabulous value for money. Have a classy and well made feel despite the low price. Optically they are good to very good. Not as good as my Leica 10x32 but not far off. And waterproof too which is great for tropical climes and wet season activity. Thoroughly recommended
