If you're doing any kind of work where you need to:1. Reach a snap ring in a less than ideal position (ex: you can't look at it head on).2. Don't want the snap ring to pop off the pliers constantly before you have even removed it.3. The snap ring is large in diameter.I attempted an A/C clutch coil replacement on an Infiniti G35, where the longitudinal orientation of the engine made looking directly at the snap rings impossible. There's also only about 5 inches of room between the radiator and the face of the pulley. The regular non-angled ones (0 degrees) give you the best reach into a deep recess but require space at least equal to the length of the pliers (about 7-8 inches)so that's not going to work for me (I only have about 5 inches). The 90 degree angled ones would be ideal for cramped positions like this but won't work either because the length of the portion past the 90 degree bend is about .6 of an inch, the snap rings are recessed at an inch into the clutch coil. The 45 degrees angle pliers are special, they're a compromise of two pliers since they're half way between the 0 degrees plier and the 90 degrees plier. It gives me some (not all) of the reach of the 0 degrees plier, at the same time since you're using it diagonally against the snap ring, it gives you half of the close quarters performance of the 90 degrees pliers. Remember slope from math class? Measure the length of pliers held diagonally and it's smaller than measuring the length of the same pliers laid flat. 5 inch pliers held at a 45 degree angle is only about 3.5 inches in length. The tips are turned outward so that the ears of the snap ring once locked on will work their way down the tips and lock in place (won't pop off). The long handles give it excellent leverage for larger diameter snap rings that require more effort to spread apart, the tips spread wide enough for those too.I made the first two attempts with cheaper snap ring pliers, laying under a car swearing and exerting force on a snap ring you can't see is awful. It kept popping off if you even spread them a millimeter wider than they were comfortable with. The tips on cheaper pairs break too. It took two hours to get the first snap ring at the pulley off. The second snap ring at the clutch coil wasn't reachable and the pliers I had didn't spread wide enough anyway. I had to put everything back together, total failure. The third attempt I was armed with these pliers, I took off both snap rings in ten seconds total. GOD BLESS THE GERMANS. They're worth EVERY PENNY, less than 30 dollars to not have to waste your time and effort is a steal. They have a customer for life, cheaper snap ring pliers are ideal for small diameter snap rings you can see head on like if you were removing a snap ring holding an anvil on an impact wrench or ratchet. Anything larger, thicker that requires fumbling? Don't mess around. Their website also has an excellent listing of their pliers categorized by angle, spread, shaft diameter, tip diameter, etc, made it easy for me to find the pliers that matched the context I was working within.

Super hard tips. High quality construction. I used these to change the A/C compressor pulley bearing on my Toyota 4Runner without having to remove the compressor. They saved me about $1000 in maintenance costs. I would have had to have it serviced at a shop: evacuate lines, change compressor, condenser, accumulator/desiccant, ND-8 oil, dye, refrigerant, and maybe a switch (depending on who does the A/C service). Instead, I only had to buy pliers and a new Nachi pulley bearing. So far, it has lasted through the heat of summer and well into the defrost and dehumidify weather of winter. I tried several straight and convertible-type snap ring pliers and couldn't reach the humongous front snap-ring at the correct angle.I tied These pliers had the reach, angle, and the strength to do it. The tips are strategically angled outward and they really don't let go once you grab the snap-ring. I found them indispensable when I was working in a space I could barely reach and needed a light and inspection mirror to see. It was tough to get the tips into the snap ring holes. I gave up on the many other pliers I tried and bought these because the others failed to hold onto the ring after many attempts. I got tuckered out and never want to hear the sound of a snap ring plier slipping off the ring again. I will buy Knipex pliers again when I need them.
