Loved the first Kings Bounty (technically the first of the remakes to use the name) game but never did finish it because it became a grind. I must've played around forty hours or more of it. Second game I managed about 15 hours before the grind got to me. With Warriors of the North I don't think I managed even five hours. You can see where this is going? To be fair, I've played more than five hours of Dark Side but there's nothing here to trouble a veteran of the series. A lot of it looks very familiar. In the previous games you could amass armies made up of ghouls and skeletons but it could have a morale effect on your own troops. With Dark Side the first major goal you're given is to raise an unholy army and get back your castle.Obviously things don't go exactly to plan and it'll be a long time before you're either done with the quests or simply too tired to carry on.Raise an army to the maximum of your leadership ability, navigate the map picking up treasure and additional units. Visit shops to replenish troops and supplies. And most importantly kill your enemies. Rinse and repeat. One of the signature features of the series is the quirky humour revealed on the map quests, and that's still there but it's all getting a bit strained. There are not just oddball quests but funny loot to be gathered as well.Truly the engine doesn't look to have changed since the original 2008 release and still insists on defaulting to 1280x1024 resolution, when pretty much every other game you'll play can auto-detect native resolution. The interface is functional but nothing special. There aren't THAT many games that expect you to play the bad guy so i suppose that works in its favour, and if this is your first exposure to Kings Bounty then you can be assured that there'll be plenty to keep you occupied, but if you've been there before then you've already seen it all and either that's enough to convince you to grab it at once or steer well clear.EDIT: I've played a bunch more, and I'm well into the late stages of the game. You know what, it's not as grindy as the last game, Heroes of the North, and its charm has kinda grown on me. I'd still recommend the 2008 original over this for someone completely fresh to the series but it might still be worth revisiting for a veteran. Something that becomes really apparent in the later game is the amount of criss-crossing quests that you'll do. You will literally be sent to a location to check on something, sent back to the quest-giver to find out what to do next, be sent across the map to another NPC or even to a different map, then back to the quest location, then back to the quest giver then off to a third NPC... and it happens again and again.4 out of 5.

I haven't played any of the other King's Bounty games but I'm no stranger to RPG type games and for several years have played a MMORPG online. This is also very similar to the Heroes of Might & Magic series.Turn based combat seems a bit dated to be honest but maybe that's the appeal of these games. Not having any experience of earlier in the series I don't know but I expect the style will appeal to those who prefer an old skool gaming experience but with modern graphics. It was very easy to install on my Win7 machine but I haven't tried it on my Win8 laptop as that hasn't got the Steam account on it.The graphics are not too terrible but that's coming from a perspective of someone who plays a lot of these types of games. They're no better or worse than most others in the genre but they're not CGI cutting edge or even close. The controls are easy to work out but the camera controls were a bit buggy and frustrating. I'm not sure if it's my mouse that's on the blink though as it's been playing up a bit so I'd need to update this review when (if) I get a new one. Other than that it's easy to play and not too technical even if you're new to this type of game. The gameplay and storyline is interesting and enough to keep me coming back for more but it's not really a play from start to finish type game as there are so many different angles you can come at it from. It's much more fun to go exploring and making it up as you go along. I'm not a fan of ambush style games and there are lots in this genre that seem to use that format but thankfully this isn't one of them, you get a chance to mostly pick your battles.Fairly easy to level up, decent graphics, intuitive gameplay and all with a bit of a retro feel. I like it and it'll probably appeal to fans of role play games and turn based and hexagonal gaming.

I'm editing this review because I finally got the game to work, if you read further on you will see what first happened. My computer is running Windows 7, and after spending quite some time trawling the Internet for a solution to the missing cursor, I finally discovered I had to turn the mouse trails off.I have a 2 monitor system, and had configured my computer to leave little trails behind the mouse cursor as it was easy to lose track of it. To get this game to work I do disable the trails, and now it's perfectly playable and very good.So my advice is to anyone wanting to install a game from STEAM is to disable mouse trails first,by going to Control Panel and select the mouse and disable mouse trails.ORIGINAL REVIEW :-I was looking forward to playing this game, but so far have failed to play it at all.The game is supplied on a DVD, so I was therefore perplexed when it insisted on installing a STEAM account, and then seemed to download the entire game from the Internet which took about 40 minutes. What is the point in providing a DVD which only seems to have a loader program.Once the game was downloaded, I fired up the STEAM account which seems to be a software engine for running games. I have 2 monitors on my computer, the left-hand monitor went black, and the right hand monitor was filled with a menu. But there was no mouse cursor to select play, load game, save game, options or exit.I had to use control alt delete to kill the program.I have tried several times but so far failed to run the game.

So, yet another entry in the King's Bounty series. Thing is, I never did get around to playing any of the others because I have something of a love/hate relationship with hex-based games. Disciples II (Gold) - loved it, played all the races and their respective campaigns; HOMM of any description - couldn't get on with it, just left me cold; Fantasy Wars and the Elven follow-up - excellent, although a bit grindy; the original Elemental - loved it, even though it was buggy as all get go and the company that produced it ending up giving me Fallen Enchantress as an apology (which I also loved). So Dark Side is my first foray into the King's Bounty franchise and I figured this would be a good starting point for me because it gives me a good idea of how the rest of the franchise plays, just from the other side. I haven't played all the characters yet (orc, vampire, devil) but what I have played of the game is good. The game is rough round the edges, but I've got no problem with that, and I get the feeling that the graphics engine is probably the same as for the previous King's Bounty title (the engine does feel and look a little old), but again that isn't something that I have a problem with.Campaign depth is good (well, so far), sound and music are excellent (not as good as some, but I like it, which is good enough for me) and most importantly, at least as far as the game publisher's are concerned I guess, I liked the game enough to pick up the Platinum Edition of King's Bounty.

It has been a long time since I played hexagonal type computer games and even longer since I first played role-playing games of the Dungeons & Dragons type, so I was intrigued to try this one out when I was offered it for review. Particularly I wanted to see how good the graphics were on my new Windows 8 machine and the advances that the software producers had made in the past few years.I have not played any in the King's Bounty series before so I do not have another of this type to compare this with but as I said above I played many of these type of games some time ago. As usual it has you wandering around with and wonderful lands raising an army and trying to maximise your abilities by slayingvarious types of foes. It's very easy to get started on this game and you very quickly pick up a few allies and almost as quickly start your first few battles. From a gameplay point of view things really haven't come on all that much in the past 15 years. Also, the graphics aren't exactly 21st-century. But all that said, for me it's all about the gameplay and I did really enjoy playing it. A public haven't even got 50% through the game yet but am enjoying the adventure.

sad creature that I am I have played and replayed all the Kings Bounty games. It's a safer stress management system than drugs or booze!Whoopee, thinks I, a new one.But not as polished, and somehow generally emptier. It has a new, if not Beta, Indie game feel to it and I have gotten fed up and returned to replay Warriors of the North again. (never finished as a mage)The main problem is that I find it unsettling and not fun to be a baddie. I keep wanting and trying to be a goody2 shoes. I'm hoping that the game will play out with me surviving as a rebel dark sider - a sheep disguised in wolfs clothing.4 stars for being a PC game and not a hoppy- skippy -hammer random keys on a console handholdwhile watching a poor film- type game but unless there are some hidden gems yet to visit when I further into the game, a more honest rating would be 3.

I enjoyed my first adventure through Kings Bounty: Dark Side. I play a lot of games and found this turn-based RPG quite good, even if the battles do seem a little old-school; I feel that is part of its charm and I am sure this is the style the developers have gone for. I certainly spent quite bit of time on it already!I tested it out on this

Not a bad way of passing time. Fairly easy to pick up and quite engaging. Nothing new to note really in this genre of game but pretty good.

Good game. Really like the graphics, cant say the same for the gameplay, bit confusing here and there.
