Having owned nearly all variants of the kindle I am amazed at how under appreciated it is reading the low ratings on here.Part of the problem I believe is the younger generation are given powerful smartphones and compare the two which seems unfair. The kindle is a product designed for reading and reading only.Nothing else.It serves this purpose wonderfully and I don't believe there is a better ebook reader out there that can offer the huge variety of books like the amazon kindle can.You are better off buying the kids version for kids because of the easy no worry free warranty, no ads, double storage space plus the 1 year unlimited access to free content.People have stated it's slow to use and the interface is not easy to use.I disagree and once you know what technology powers the kindle you will know they have done a fantastic job in utilising the device to the best of its capabilities. Is the kindle slow?Yes, compared to a smartphone or tablet. It's much slower. Is it slow for an ebook reader?Definitely not. The technology behind the display is a work of art in itself, it is perfect for an eBook due to its clarity and it's low use of power. This does not house a media like display with huge brightness and multi colours. It's a simple display and perfect for reading. You won't get headaches or any ill effects from blue light.Only buy this kindle if your children enjoy reading. If they don't then it's simply a waste of money and you probably will suffer with buyer's remorse. But if your kid/s love to read, ignore all the ignorant comments on here they are unjustified and I don't know how anyone can complain about such a great little device. As with any new gadget, there is a small learning curve and the kindle has limited processing power so won't have drop down menus or hold functions, the menu UI is based on simple clicks to navigate around.Yes you will need to spend a few minutes learning how to use it but this is nothing out of the ordinary. Here are a list of positives using a kindle:-More space in the room due to less books-Ability to do multitask reading-Can be used without interfering with a siblings sleep-Downloaded PDFs can be viewed on the device-Long battery Life-2 Year accidental damage warranty-Powerful aid in helping your child go to sleep if they struggle-Can be connected to a Bluetooth speaker, then read to your kids through Audible-Can have multiple profiles-No ads or adult related content-1 Year free access to free time-The kids version has exactly the same specs, a few mm larger in size but double storage space at 8GB-You can run the kids as a normal kindle at a later dateI can't rate this product enough. It encourages reading, it's small and portable, last for weeks and offers a great 2 year warranty. If you are reading this review, then certainly consider these points and only buy one if you want to encourage reading or enhance it.It's not a tablet, it has no games or YouTube, its exactly what the kids need, some engaging activity, get the brain working again and you can even use this for family reading time. There are no cons to reading I'm general and I find it hard to be critical of a device like this. It's cheap and for this small investment it's peanutsI will however echo one of the complaints which is the connection type. Micro USB are infamous for breaking and kids especially will end up damaging or inserting the connector the wrong way round.Hopefully they use USB-C in the next genIf you are worried about this though, search Amazon for magnetic micro USB cables. You can buy a cable that has a magnetic break off connector that installs into the micro USB and stays there, the other end is magnetic and connects to it and will make it much easier to use.

Here is what important to know about this Kindle edition. First, this is a standard 10th generation wi-fi Kindle, the most basic Kindle, though it does benefit from 8GB storage and adjustable backlighting. It is not modified to make it child-friendly other than in software, and once you set up a child account, you can have that child log on to any of your Kindles in the same way.Second, the Fire for Kids Unlimited offer is a subscription, and after the first year you have to pay, currently £3.99 per month or £1.99 if you also pay a Prime subscription. You can cancel auto-renew and therefore not pay anything after the first year, though you will have to contact customer support to do so.What’s in the subscription?Well, “thousands of books” that you can read at no extra cost, but I cannot find a complete list of titles. It does include the Harry Potter books (all of them), several Paddington books by Michael Bond , and some classic out of copyright books like Robinson Crusoe, but a lot of the other books look rather low quality and it is only a small subset of what is available. Of course you can purchase other books as needed but it is a bit unfortunate that when the child is logged in, the only books they can see are those already purchased or in the subscription. So in a sense you are directing the child to a rather inferior library when there are better titles they can get outside it.The books are subdivided into titles for 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. There are parental controls so the child won’t normally see books above their age range but you can override this. In the youngest age group you might find the Kindle unsatisfactory because of the lack of colour and the poor reproduction of pictures, and in fact Amazon recommends this Kindle for ages 7 and up.The setup experience was not very good for me. I followed the prompts to add a child profile but got “Server error” and completed this in a web browser at Amazon’s “Parent dashboard.” After that the Kindle showed a nearly blank screen and did not work properly until I forced it to restart (hold down power).Once set up you or a child can enter the “Fire for kids” experience and once entered it is locked to that until you enter a PIN code to exit. It seems very safe in that the child cannot read titles not approved for children or use the web browser. The parent dashboard will tell you what the child has read. One thing I don’t like is that when you browse what is available, there is no description of the book, just the cover. If you tap the cover it immediately downloads to the Kindle. I would have preferred more information about the book before you decide whether to download it.The Kindle is good for learning vocabulary in that you can tap any word and get a dictionary definition. There is also an optional feature called Word Wise which has definitions in small type above all words it considers difficult. So above “cauldron” it says “a large pot.” Word wise is not perfect though. Above “stitches” it said, “thread used to close a wound,” even though the context was knitting rather than surgery. I preferred to have Word Wise off and just use the standard dictionary facility.Despite all these niggles, this is actually a smart buy. You get the latest Kindle hardware with a plain magnetic cover thrown in (pink or blue! No sensitivity to modern thinking about gender and identity), two year guarantee, 4 week battery life, and a year’s free subscription that you can cancel without penalty. So despite being not very good as a child-friendly Kindle, it is great value, especially for a child near the top of the age range.

This device look very pretty, covered with smooth and soft pink cover, perfect for girls. We didnt have Kindle device before so can not compare it to previous generations :/ Took few minutes to set the account, and a bit more time to know how to use this device. From begin it was confusing, because didnt know how to come back to main page, as there is no buttons to press ( only one on the bottom to restart, cancel or screen off). Im missing an option to switch device off when is not in use.. standby option is not the same, isn't it? After some trying, tapping here or there finally worked things out and now is all good.So if I want come back to main page I need to tap on top of the screen, then navigation panel shows up and with one touch I can be back on main page to search for another book for my child or click one from already downloaded ones. She loves "Chip and Biff" series but there is only 2 positions :/ Same with "Mr Small". That's a bit disappointing that there is no much kids favourite books..To check on which page we are or how many left, or to skip some pages, just slide finger up from the middle of bottom of the screen. There is 2 options- see many pages at once or one page with slide option. To go to next page while you read just tap the right side of the screen, and to go back to previous page- tap left side of the screen.I've set "word wise" option so while reading, and not knowing what some word means, this option will explain the meaning. Also if I tap finger on the unknown word, the full description will appear on the top of the screen. Thanks to this option we all can learn new words. That's big bonus for the Kindle. After spending some time with this device, it feels more familiar and easy to operate.Child profile on this device is pretty basic and easy to use. There is parent controls settings where is more options, for example to purchase new books. That is very good, that only parent can access paid service.Kindle is all in one, is small but have many books in it to read (not all of them we know yet, but not all the books are included in this service as I mentioned before). We are currently in 1 year included subscription and if we decide to continue, I would like to see more books available in here. This one small device doesnt take much space compare to shelves loaded of paper version of the book... everything have its positives and negatives.. less paper books, more trees saved but sometimes I want to hold a proper book in my hand.. electronic sometimes let us down though..Reasuming, battery life is very good, last many days; Kindle is good to have, especially for long journeys; It teaches new words, interface may be a bit slower than expected for 10th generation Kindle but I dont complain, I'm happy with that.

I'm really pleased with this device, but have some niggles and ideas for improvement.Weigh the pros and cons before you buy; it's still great value for money.[Remember, this device is the SAME as the 6 inch adult device (£80 without Special Offers), but has twice the amount of storage and comes with a case, longer guarantee and 1yr Fire for Kids subscription]POSITIVES*Lovely illustrated case (very smooth to touch, magnetic closure, folds fully back, soft lining)*Beautiful illustrated screensavers when in Fire for Kids mode (see photo)*Ability to change back and forth from adult and kids mode*Backlight, vocabulary builder, built in dictionary,8gb storage*2 year replacement guarantee and Fire for Kids subscriptionNEGATIVES*The 167ppi screen displays pixelated text (see photo). I have good eyesight and can see the pixelation quite clearly, and it's sometimes jarring. I wasn't expecting to see pixels on a Kindle screen. This may just be me being fussy, and I will probably get used to it, but it's a good reason to buy or upgrade to a 300ppi model instead*The battery life is around 15hrs. It lasted 12days with roughly one hour of reading per day and lots of playing around with settings and switching back and forth from kids to adult mode. If you take this device on holiday then make sure you take a charger. I expected better battery life from a KindlePOSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS*You cannot invert the screen colours in the Accessibility settings menu to have white text on a black background; the product is capable of doing it, so it'd make sense to give readers the choice as some people prefer to read this way - either just at night, or all the time due to eye strain or eye conditions*Allow users to search the content of the book they are reading instead of ALL books*A 'mark as unread' option would be useful as I often try to scroll through my library but a book opens instead, hence most of my books are now 0 - 3% complete*When you open a book for the first time it should open on the front page - showing the book cover. Currently books open on Chapter One, which is usually around 3% in and means you miss any author's notes or dedications and have to scroll back to the start anywayI have sent these ideas for improvements to the Kindle feedback email address, so hopefully they'll be implemented in future updates.

This is essentially a 10th generation kindle, but geared up for kids by giving it a decent case to avoid damage and a special kids interface. It can also be used by adult readers in the same way as every kindle, with a switch to the kids mode just in the settings bar.The free year of Kids Unlimited gives access to a number of free books. I was slightly disappointed by the lack of real children’s classics such as the Chronicles of Narnia, Roald Dahl and suchlike, but there is still a vast amount of books and audio books available. It is setup so that after one year, you have to cancel the subscription or it will automatically renew by charging your regular amazon account payment method.I don’t know if downloaded titles will disappear if you don’t renew the subscription, so don’t leave anything unread before cancelling just in case!On switching from kids mode back to regular kindle (if you are going to share this with your kids), a pin code is required so they can’t access adult themed reading.Out of the box, the kindle comes charged and ready for use. Setup was easy for me as I already have an amazon account so it just treats it as a second kindle. You can then setup child profiles for your kids. There is the facility to set daily targets for reading. The screen size is excellent and the backlighting is great for reading in bed. Having the screen set fairly bright does noticeably reduce battery life though. The touch screen seems slow to respond when compared to other modern devices, but you have to remember that this is simply an e-reader; nothing more complex! Forward and backward page turns are achieved by touching the left or right side of the screen. I was worried at first because I’ve been used to a 5th generation kindle which has forward and backward buttons on both sides of the case. so one-handed reading is easy. I did worry that I mightn’t be able to do this so easily, but actually unless you tap right on the left edge of the screen, the page turns forward so I can still do one-handed reading in my left hand and hold a cup of tea in the right!USB lead was included in the box. Bluetooth connection to headphones for audible books was easy. All in all a great setup because you can let your kids use it, but then nab it back afterwards and use it yourself!!!!

My son (10) was excited when I got this Kindle. It's the latest edition, and has a backlit screen (Which is useful for his bedtime reading) and also bluetooth, which he set up straight away and downloaded a Goosebumps Audio book. He did this without any guidance from me, which indicates how easy it is to use. The device is slim and portable, with a clear screen and a bright backlight so it'll be easy to take away on holiday. The Kindle came with an extremely well fitting and durable blue case, which he also liked and I think will keep it protected from bumps and drops. One thing that did disappoint him slightly was the selection of books available as part of the package,as there did not seem to be enough fantasy/science fiction. This is not a huge problem, as I can just get him the books he wants anyway, and I can see there are some there he would like (Harry Potter books for instance). It's just a case of persuading him to read something new. (Although he did find a Goosebumps book, so maybe he needs to spend more time looking through the selection.)To conclude: an extremely happy 10 year old who was over the moon to have a Kindle (And another piece of technology to play around with!). I'm very happy as well, as I want him to read a bigger range of books and hopefully he would use this to diversify his reading material.Setting up was easy: once I entered my account details it picked out my existing kids accounts and allowed me to select him.

Got this for my 10 year old son in a desperate last ditch attempt to get him to like reading. It worked! For the past 5 years I have tried EVERYTHING to try to get my son want to read. We tried all the tricks and tips that his teachers suggested, read to him every night and ended up getting him tested for dyslexia (which he doesn’t have). Nothing worked.Apart from the kindle kids!!!From the night he got it he wanted to read on it. Being able to search for his own books, set reading goals and see his minute by minute progress has all combined perfectly for him. Now he actively loves reading the kindle (he calls it kindling)and is also moving on to asking to buy paper books to read and is actually interested when we go into bookshops too!Because it is the paper white version it doesn’t stimulate the eyes/brain like the blue screen of a tablet so he can use it before bed and go to sleep quickly with no problems. Also, because it cannot do games or tv etc he knows it’s just for reading so he doesn’t even ask to use it for something else like prime etc. While I don’t feel like my time trying to get him to read before this was wasted, it was a struggle, mainly because it felt like he hated it! Now he loves it and it’s like a massive stress has just gone away and he can start to enjoy reading! It’s worth every penny!

I love books and reading, but on holiday, that can lead to a significant amount of weight to carry. Having a reader means a large volume of books can be available to hand. This is a kids version, slightly smaller, pink or blue cover. Really? Pink or blue? Are we still so gender rigid? On opening, there are a number of free books you can download - this comes with a years subscription to children's books. However, the vast majority are for young children, for older kids, the selection is limited, although there is a set of Harry Potter on there. However, by going into your amazon account, you can buy any type of book and download it to the device - thereby adding more,or overruling the child bit.Open it up and each time there is a different image, like the front of a child's picture book, except in black and white. Tap near the top and you are always taken to the home page, able to switch between the books in your library. a light tap will turn the page. Brightness can be altered and the battery seems to last a long time. It also switches from dark on light to light on dark, enabling reading in the dark.I really do like this. Its so handy. It would be great for public transport, as its so light and small.

This kindle is great and in my opinion worth the additional premium on top of the original. The original retails for around 60 pounds on it's own. When you add in the 24 pounds value of Kindle Unlimited for Kids, you're at 84 pounds. A case is around 20 pounds. That's 104 of value. Plus Amazon will replace the item for any reason if it breaks within 2 years, so that is great as kids often don't take the best care of devices. This is effectively free! The blue is bright and vibrant.Otherwise this is the original standard 2019 kindle, with a storage upgrade. I'm not sure why it has double the 4gb storage of the standard 2019 kindle, but this is welcome if you are perhaps listening to audiobooks on the device as these take up much more space than books.Otherwise you will almost certainly never reach that limit just loading books onto the device. This is a great kindle for kids, or alternatively those travelling a lot in difficult environments due to the guarantee and the case/cover which is thrown in. Or simply those that can't be trusted to look after their devices (those of you using phones with broken screens, you know who you are...)

I love that it comes in a perfect size box!Love the fact that is easy to set and start to use.The design is lovely also, but get a sweet and nice case for it, the one I've got is too simple for kids I would say (blue).I feel its a bit hard to use sometimes, the way you have to scroll, I find myself having difficult to go back to main menu... That also happens with my 6 years old daughter, so it needs a software more simple and user friendly...The warranty for it is amazing, and free replacement if its damaged... One year subscription also included...You can't play with it, only read, but it's a reader, so get used to it...It's black and white tablet also, so no colours! Still, stories have pictures, and they are fun to read.So many different stories to pick, hours of good reading! It charges quick, and its light to old.My daughter still thinks it should be able to play simple games, what it doesn't...Overal, if the navigation becomes easier, I think its a perfect reader, but it needs that essencial improvement...Other thing that has to be changed is the available cover cases, they need to be more fun, it's for kids...

This was under the tree from santa, my daughter loves it she's happily reading harry Potter as I type this. She does like reading and was always asking abouT our kindles so when she asked for one on her list the big man obviously listened.I can't comment too much about the kids content included because the second she seen harry Potter that was as far as I was permitted to look. It's essentially the basic kindle from what I can tell but with an included cover in surprisingly for this day and age normal gender typical covers no doubt that will change to be inclusive of spotted penguins and an excellent warranty. I was hoping to be able to limit the time reading to ensure she isn't up all night but alas I don't seem to be able to,it hasn't been an issue so not looked too hard.Battery lasts ages and wifi only so ensure you've loaded books or have wifi if going away etc.She loves that she can read in bed without the light on thus disturbing her younger sister. Overall if your young one enjoys reading it's really good and I'd much rather they where reading than watching mindless drivel on TV or ipads

This is great, not only for children who love books, but also for reluctant readers. My son, 10, is really enthused about his Kindle dispite my struggle to get him to pick up a book!! I have read that boys particularly are more drawn to e-readers than a book and it appears to be true! He (and myself) like to built in dictionary so he no longer has to ask what a work means he just taps and checks!!Down side: it's quick had to navigate through the book store when you want to choose a new book. I can't find any filters to narrow your search. There is a search icon if you want to look for a specific book or author, but if youre not sure it's a long process of scrolling through 100s!! Therefore,we have been selecting books on the laptop, which is linked to his Kindle, as the laptop allows filters to be applied then syncing them! It's seems to be the best way.

I really like that they are catering for kids with this Kindle. I find that the adult version of the software is more user friendly than the kids one though and I am often confused with having to find things on the Kindle addition. I hope they improve that.My 7 year old is pouring through books now and is loving her Kindle.I like to shop for Kindle books on the Amazon website more than on the Kindle itself (including books for myself) but I can't tell which ones fall under the Fire for Kids Unlimited - it doesn't give you the option to 'borrow' the books through the website, only buy them. The Parent portal is difficult to find. All in all, love the Kindle but interface should be a lot more user friendly and organising books for my daughter is a chore.

This is my fifth kindle! They get better and better... this one is like my paper white... it has a great screen and is easy to read..I signed into my account and all of my books synced with this...It comes with a kids account too... so you can sign your kids into it... they get reading of about 1000 books for a year... they can also watch programmes on the Fire...It comes with a cover already applied... I got blue...I do think the pink or blue colour range is a bit naff to say the least... why not black or orange etc... but the cover supplied is very good...It’s a great product that you can read on and it links to an audible account ... if you have one....and you can listen to books too..Great for travel...

This was the only thing my daughter wanted for her birthday after she started borrowing my kindle to read at bedtime. As a kindle owner myself I knew what to expect for browsing speeds and downloading etc, I was pleased with how easy it was to set it up with my daughter's profile, we did already have a profile for the fire tablet so this does speed the process up but looks like it would be just as easy for a new profile. We have had this running two weeks now and it works perfectly and my daughter loves it. She loves the awards you get for reading achievements and the selection of books available on the kids unlimited is great.
