The word Kessen means "Decisive Battle" in Japanese, specifically those which were fought in early part of 17th centuary Japan. This title is very different to conventional real-time strategy games that you may be used to on PCs. This I found refreshing. You'll focus more on the capabilities, actions and tactical strategy of a number of troops then macro-managing each individual soldier (which to be honest - is a godsend, given the kind of numbers you're working with!)First off, the graphics are first class - and by that I mean the quality, detail and scale of waging battles of such magnitude. It is truly a cinematic experience.During battles there is a fine blend of pre-scripted animation sequences using the in game graphics engine and real-time,animations showing your troops in action.Tip: Don't spend too long gawping at the amazing graphics! While it is probably the first game to show off the graphics potential of the PS2, the scale of the battles is so huge you'll find it is pointless watching each individual unit fight because you'll end up loosing. In between battles there are some nifty pre-rendered CGI sequences and documentary style narration of the story, at other times you're made to feel like your experiencing the story first hand - there is some excellant characterisation. After a few hours I found myself caught up in it, ignoring the beautiful graphics and finding myself more concerning with planning (this is a first. I never though it would come to this... the PS2s awesome graphics over pure strategy?).Its a great game worth investing in - the storyline and music (courtesy of the Moscow State Orchestra) match the quality of graphics. You'll really need to spend around two to three hours to work it all out. So don't become frustrated if you feel overwhelmed, they do kind of drop you in at the deep end. That said, as you begin to figure it out you soon learn that its an epic title, with some big ambitions and it doesn't fall far short.I would recommend this game to anybody who enjoyed PC real time strategy games and wanted to try something different!

This is one of the few ps2 strategies worth spending money on.It eases you in getting gradually difficult instead of throwing you into a ridiculously difficult battle that you have no hope of winning so you sell or return your game. The interface is very easily used. The special abilities can help you win a losing battle and managing your troops morale is a challenge but the game is rewarding and makes you want to play on to the end. There are many generals and you get to play as both factions. i can't remember how many stages there are but there are quite a few. if you work out strategies you may be there for a while as i have played some missions for a few hours. This game could even be compared with shogun:total war as it is so good.If you own shogun total war then expect much of the same but for the PS2.If you like Kessen this get kessen 2 and 3 which are both just as good featuring improved graphics, new stories and more abilities!

Kessen, at a glace, is a crappy, hardcontrolled game with a nice shiny surface, dipped a number of times in saucy CG-intros. But when you begin to look under the surface of the game, on the actual gameplay, you might find something you didn't think a game like this could have. Scheaming. Thats right, even if it's not like the C&C-games (where you controll each unit individually) you van set up actual real formations, lure the enemy into scissor-formation, box or other traps and destroy him. And it works! Sometimes. ;)So who cares if the outfits isn't true to the timeperiod? The story is based on real battles and the movies, ahh, the movies. Even the in-storymodes are sometimes real CG-renders.Beutifull game.So if you have a couple of hours left, spend it with this game!

when i first got my PS2 i had no idea what were the good games and what were the bad ones. i got it at toys r us with 2 games, tekken tag and kessen. when i first got it my bro was saying how s*it both games were but cos the only mag i got had no reviews, i had to go with the ones that looked good. i Got this and at first... it seemed i should've got another game. But as i got fursther into the games i realised just how great it is. The movie cut scenes are magnificent and add to the game superbly. the tension, the drama my only one problem is that there is no multiplayer!

now everyone hates history lessons but the japanese were vicous this game is a real treat it allows you to blow stuff up and take out ure frustration all at once. the graphics are really good you can see the facial expressions and everything. there might not be blood but it is fun to watch people get stabbed over and over again! the only down side is that they constantly repeat the battle scenes so u know whats going to happen but other than tha it great. a must have for startegy players and a game that will keep you busy while ure friends put the kettle on:)
