Kingston have been making computer accessories for many years and this, as is usual for their items, appears well made and will probably be able to take quite a bit of abuse. It is clearly aimed at users with laptops and will work both with and without the supplied power adaptor. However if you are wishing to use it with higher power demand USB devices, especially if you're charging a phone, pad or tablet then the power unit really should be used to diminish the risk of over loading the USB port output rating of your computer. The device itself is simply an anonymous black box 75 x 50 x 15mm in size. It has one input for the power supply 4 USB ports (blue because this is intended for USB 3.0 ports)and one input for the USB lead to your PC.This particular lead I suggest you take great care of as it is not a standard USB to USB lead having a different plug at the hub end than the usual USB type A or type B style. As is the norm these days it comes with a virtually useless folded sheet of paper masquerading as a user guide. This sheet tells you nothing. Annoyingly so since the hub has a blue LED on the top which tells you........ well that's your guess as it's not even mentioned in the instructions or on Kingstons web page for the device. It doesn't light up simply when power is applied but it does light up when you connect it to your computer. However it only stays alight for 5 seconds and then goes off. If you plug any active USB device in (not just a device using the hub as a charger) then the light illuminates all the time at least one hub port has an active device in it. Also simply ejecting the device from your USB control window in Windows doesn't turn the light off. It is only extinguished once the device is completely unplugged. I would have preferred a light per port so that should you have more than one device attached, you'd be able to tell which has been ejected. As USB hubs go it's a bit on the pricey side but it does have a 2 year warranty against failure in normal use.The power supply stays nice and cool while I tested the hub supplying charging power to 3 devices and that always bodes well for the future longevity of anything. The UH4000C is certainly worth considering if you're after a USB 3.0 hub with higher than usual supply and charging capabilities.Update! For anyone thinking of using this with a Raspberry Pi - DON'T !I saw another review where the reviewer had tried this hub for powering a Raspberry Pi and had found it didn't.So I thought I'd give it a try on one of mine and. not only did it not power the PI for some reason it corrupted the configuration files on the PI's SD card. Luckily I got it repaired and the Pi works again but DO NOT try to power the Pi via this hub as, for some reason it won't do it.Other hubs will but not this one although it does work as a normal hub with the pi to feed other USB devices.

Everything about this product was on track for getting a five star review, but ultimately it doesn’t work for the purpose I wanted it for, so I’ve had to reluctantly go for four stars. The problem is that it won’t work with my Raspberry Pi. I had planned to remove the direct charger from my Pi and power via this Hub instead- this gaining myself some USB sockets without using up any more power sockets. Having read a very little about it in advance, it seemed like although the strict USB 3 standard technically isn’t enough to power a Pi, there are USB hubs which “view the USB standards more like guidelines, and will provide as much power as you want out each port” and which, according to the Pi’s documentation, will provide enough power for the Pi. Unfortunately, this Kingston device is not one of them. The Pi wasn’t receiving enough power and constantly cycled round its boot process until I unplugged it.I shouldn’t really criticise the device too much for that, since technically it can have been built to the USB 3.0 standards as advertised, so I was really just hoping for, rather than expecting, the Pi power. It’s a shame, because otherwise it’s a top-notch little device. The hub itself is absolutely tiny, and will be easy to fit almost anywhere. A slightly longer USB 3 cable might have been nice, but otherwise the compactness and efficiency of it is hard to fault. The power supply is larger than, and weighs more than, the hub itself. It’s optional whether you plug it in or not, it depends on whether your hub will be in situ most of the time, or travelling around, and if it’s in situ, then you won’t mind the weight of the charger so much anyway. It’s got an excellent build quality, and both looks and feels posh and professional. Given its simple purpose, it could hardly be any simpler to use.But four stars it is, even though I feel a bit unfair and maybe it should have been five.

This device is so tiny and lightweight - see the video for an impression. The key point is that it's USB 3, which is so much faster than USB 2 (and 1.1 before it - all backwards compatible) - if you've got a USB 3 port on your computer or laptop, this device extends it so you gain another three. It comes with a power supply, so you can charge devices with it - we use it for our phones, tablets and Chromebooks. It feels well made and should last for years - at least until we've all converted over to USB C (even faster, higher power and far easier to plug in) - but that migration has just started.USB 3 sockets can be identified by the blue plastic inside (instead of the white or black of USB 2).As it's quite common for laptops and desktop computers to have a mixture, do ensure you plug into a USB 3 (blue socket) to get the maximum speed.

I have recently purchased a MacBook which has only a single USB-C port on it. As a result, connecting peripherals has been somewhat o an issue, although I love my new computer. This Kensington 4-port USB 3.0 hub is a life save, and now means that I can connect all of my existing traditional USB devices to my computer. I have a time machine hard drive, speakers and another hard drive all connected at the same time, and all work very quickly with no drop outs. The port is a sleek black colour and quite small, so can discretely sit behind my desktop monitor. All-in-all, I am very happy with it. 5/5

This is a very well made and useful device. The speed of the USB throughput is as good as you would expect from USB 3. The device itself is very small and feels well made. The cables are thick and the power plug is as small as any other. The charging capacity is very good indeed. I connected my iPad3, Galaxy S5 and an e-cigarette charger and all of the devices were charging at the same speed as with their native chargers. And it works without the computer switched on.Overall I am unable to find a flaw in this device. It has saved me space on my desk and a load less cables.

Good hub does the job. My computer has USB3 ports and I need a fast transfer for large photo files, this does it very well. Had I not had further USB ports, I would also be using this for my external backup drives, which transfer at the faster rate. Having its own power source means that I can also charge various accessories directly from this hub. Why the 4 stars and not 5, its the power source, which reduces the portability of the hub, which is very small in itself, the charger is bigger.

I'm using an iMac 2011, and this hub works very well, I can't verify if it's USB 3 fast but it works well enough on my system, plugged it in and it works, and it gives me a little comfort knowing that it will work on the next computer I buy.As with every Kensignton product I have used, it quietly and efficiently gets on with it's job, no fuss, and is small and unabtrusive on my desk, very very pleased with this product!Yet another brilliant bit of kit from Kensington!

With Tablets and Smartphones requiring a bigger and bigger power source these days this works well. Doubling up as a USB 3.0 hub it supports fast charging capabilities on most products that support it. It is neat compact (although there is still a hefty power supply that comes with it) and well made. Expensive - A little, however it works well for charging your items and also as a portable USB hub so very useful and makes a good travel companion.

Used with a laptop and at home with our main PC. Worked so well on the go with my laptop, meant I had means to charge items whilst leaving the ports free for other things. At home was fine as well felt it was an expensive piece of kit for keeping next to my computer but fantastic to keep in my laptop bag or as a standalone charger at work for example in my locker so it was always handy. A good price and a good piece of kit.

This USB charge and sinc hub is excellent. It is being used by my husband who has numerous uses for it. I have had a few of these in the past that have not worked anywhere near as good as this one. It is sturdy and very well made and looks like it is made to last. It has been reduced in price so it is also very good value for money. Being able to charge a few items at the same time is brilliant.

Great to see a product like this, given the high number of USB3 connections I need... but with only a few sockets.Fast to connect and thankfully stable (unlike many USB3 products). The connecting hub USB3 was a little short for me (approx. 50cm), but easily remedied with one I had stashed away.Overall, usual Kensington build... but that packaging is tricky to open!!!

Exactly what I was expecting. Good product, well known manufacturer and it performs well with USB 3.0 devices.
