I'll start of by saying that I'm not much of a gadget fan. For something to deserve drawer or shelf space in my kitchen it has to deliver on ease of use, quality of the task it performs and ease of cleaning. I'm a keen cook so find myself most days chopping garlic. Whilst not the most onerous task in the world I nevertheless wasn't keen on the daily garlic chopping/crushing/slicing activity. Also, I don't like smelling of garlic. So I took the unusual step of buying a gadget with only one designated use - and I'm really pleased I did. The rocker looks beautiful ( I got the all steel one) and it has turned one of my least favourite tasks into a doddle. I now start with preparing the garlic because it's so easy.Unlike other reviewers who didn't like the item I find that a few drops of olive oil over the cutting surface results in almost no bits of garlic stuck in the holes. I also find that a quick scrape out and a second going over results in an almost paste like result which is useful for recipes requiring a paste. It is also easy to prepare several large garlic cloves simultaneously as you just keep on going without having to open, close, scrape etc as with a garlic press. Cleaning is usually a tap on the chopping board, a quick rinse under the tap and a few seconds with a washing up brush if needed before being popped into the dishwasher to remove the olive oil. My mother in law, who suffers from arthritis in her hands used it when visiting and commented how much easier it was to use than a garlic press - and easier to clean. Unlike a press which requires hand strength, the rocker uses your arm strength and downward pressure which comes from your upper body. You can use the palms of your hands rather than your fingers to operate the device meaning that arthritic hands can operate it with much greater ease. All in all I would recommend this product and has already bought a couple as gifts.

I adore and actively seek out kitchen utensils with the simplest of designs to use and maintain. Fashioned from a single piece of corrosion resistant durable alloy, and without moving parts, it doesn't come much better than Joseph & Joseph's: Rocker Garlic Crusher.Containing Nickel: 18% and Chromium: 8%, the chance of corrosion (rust) is greatly reduced, while also being highly durable (allowing you to avoid the issues those who cheaped out on the polymer version had) as the single moulded piece of stainless steel is likely able to take the full force a normal housewife could ever apply by hand. The design is a canny one as the desirable garlic mince presents itself cradled on the top of the utensil, ready to be scooped out with a spoon. The rocking motion to encourage this is made easy with the universal palm sized flat top area when moving from one garlic clove to another. If cleaning the product by hand (I always use gloves, even during operation) then the stainless steel *will* help prevent your fingers from being left smelling of garlic odour. The only issue comes when removing the pieces of garlic from the punched hole areas, as not all pieces will dislodge with the force of running water alone. Those need a little poke with a fork, or cocktail stick if one is it to hand. One of the best designs J&J have out on the market.note: as of writing, I have had mine for nearly three years now, with regular use, it has not succumb to rusting (and I leave the utensil to air dry).

Note: I purchased mine from a high street retailer but I wanted to share my experience.I have been using this to crush ginger almost daily for the last 6 months and it is by far the most robust and simple crusher I have ever used. It is elegant, easy to store and very easy to clean by simply running water over it. After crushing ginger, I use a spoon to shear off the pieces from the crusher, it's incredibly effective at getting everything out and straight into my beverage concoction. However, I am now looking for a tradition crusher because there is one major 'flaw' with this item: when crushing ginger, highly concentrated juices spill out all over the cutting board which simply goes to waste.A traditional crusher ensures every last drop of ginger extract ends up straight into my beverage and not on a chopping board. Additionally, given how often I use this, a traditional crusher avoids my having to wash up my chopping board as well after every use.So all in all, if you're looking for a long lasting elegant crusher to help out whilst chopping veggies and cooking, I highly recommend this item. But if you simply want to crush a small piece of ginger straight into a mug, I would opt for a more traditional crusher.

A friend of mine got one of these for a wedding present and told me to get one. I've had umpteen different styles of garlic crusher/grater/chopper gadgets over the years but never found anything that was any better than just good old hard work with a sharp knife. These are pricey but you can definitely feel the quality when you handle it. It doesn't take a great deal of effort to crush even a large fresh clove of garlic. I'm not sure if you can use it on unpeeled cloves, I haven't, I still peel the garlic and cut the woody end off, but then crush the whole thing with the garlic rocker. It crushes rather than cuts the garlic so you get all the lovely juices too.It is hard to get all the little bits of garlic out of the holes when washing up, a stiff bristle brush is the only thing that really works, even running it under the tap doesn't dislodge all of the trapped garlic. It's a tiny niggle though, and overall I'd say that it was probably the most successful garlic implement I've had to date.

There is a certain way to use this item (and I bought the full metal item as it would withstand a certain amount of abuse - read on). To ensure the garlic does not stick, just drizzle some oil on the honeycombed area then crush your garlic. If the bits are too big (as some other reviews state, but which I didn't really find) just scrape off the garlic and rock over it again. Because you have oiled the item before use, the garlic should come out of the holes with ease if you upturn the tool and just bang it out on the chopping board. Any remaining stubborn bits can be easily poked out with the end of a pointy chopstick. In an ideal work JJ would have provided a second tool to get the bits out; however, life is not ideal and you just have to be flexible. I never get 'garlic fingers' as I wash my hands in cold water (it stops your pores opening and the garlic smell getting in). I hope this helps any potential buyer as this is a nice bit of kitchen kit.

This garlic crusher is a much simpler design than most. It is cool to look at and looks great in my kitchen as I have a lot of brushed steel in there. To use you simply put the garlic (peeled) on a hard surface and rock the garlic crusher over it. The crushed garlic is not a fine puree but slightly coarser than that, perfect for recipes which call for crushed garlic. Then the crusher is so much easier to clean than my old Oxo garlic press, a quick run under the tap, maybe a little brush and it is clean. I liked the comments of previous reviewers that a. to get the garlic smell off your hands, rub the clean crusher between your palms- it works! and b. to prevent garlic sticking to the crusher drizzle on a drop of olive oil. This garlic crusher is much easier to store in a kitchen drawer than most, due to its flattish and more compact design.

I read reviews advising that the plastic version cracked away from the metal so I went for this all metal one and I am pleasantly surprised at how well it works. It does take a bit of pressure to squash the garlic but I hate those scissor action crushers that push the clove into small square section of the gadget, only to have half of it force its way back up the sides, so this in my opinion is far better.Cut the clove in half first, start crushing cut side up, and use a silicone chopping mat and that certainly helps. It's easy to scoop the crushed garlic off the top of the crusher, and I haven't found it difficult to clean either. The odd bit of garlic that sticks after running it under hot water comes out with the tine of a fork,or a washing up brush.I really like it, but then I hated my old crusher so much maybe I'm biased.

I'm always somewhat skeptical about the designer kitchen items which sometimes seem to sacrifice functionality for form. This is a good exception though as it is probably one of the best garlic crushers I have ever used.In particular it is very easy to crush several cloves of garlic in sequence without having to mess around with opening up the jaws or similar that you have to do in the case of traditional garlic crushers.Access to the crushed garlic is easy as is cleaning and it has survived six months of use and dishwasher cleaning without blemish.Still haven't had long enough to assess its longer term reliability but looking good so far.Would thoroughly recommend.

I bought this after our traditional 'can-opener' style garlic crusher finally broke. This is a much simpler design, much more elegant and takes up less room in the kitchen draw. The beauty of the Joseph and Joseph Garlic Rocker is that you know it's not going to break and will stand the test of time. The only downside is that it can be a bit fiddly to get all the garlic out of the mesh and requires a bit of poking with a sharp pointy knife. The same goes for cleaning. Bits of garlic tend to get wedged and stay trapped and you have to clean with a toothbrush or poke out the remaining garlic.Apart from this it's a great piece of kit, stylish, simple and elegant.

It looks great, and it works. But those holes don't empty themselves. My wife has a small basting brush which can be used to push the crushed garlic into the pan (or wherever) and then to poke clear the holes, which otherwise retain a large amount of the garlic. So she's happy with the product and her workaround. If only you sold this with a washable rubber mould whose nodules pushed exactly into the metal holes - it would enable a simple one-step clearing action, to get all the garlic where you want it; and then make washing up easier afterwards too. How about it, Mr Joseph? I'd have paid that little bit extra; and you'd have 100% 5-star reviews!

this arrived speedily and works well, the holes are quite a bit larger than I expected and at first I thought this may be a problem, and I even went over the garlic a few times, but there is no need and it works fine - I got it as my Mum has arthritis in her hands and struggles with my garlic crusher when she comes over once a week to collect and feed the children whilst I am at work - but the other garlic crusher has been binned as I love this one too - very good on space saving as well as its not chunky or cumbersome. I've got one for my mum at home too as its so good and have recommended it on.

Wanted a better garlic press/crusher that the one I had & opted for this. Reasons-was taken by the simple design and the fact that it is made of strong brushed metal. It looks good and takes up little space in the drawer. In use it is not as good as expected, the rocking action does seem to work but unfortunately the crushed garlic gets stuck in the holes & you end up having to use both hands to scrape it out with a knife. Washing is also not straight forward. Will keep it though as like the one piece crusher compared to some of the other which come in several pieces.

For some reason I keep breaking every single garlic crusher I get my hands on, so I though I'll try this one, as there's no hinges for me to destroy and so far so good! It does the job perfectly, but you actually have to rock the thing back and forth! It's easy to use and clean and it really neutralises the garlic smell if you rub your fingers on the metal "wings".The only thing I would note is that the wholes are quite large, so If you need your garlic to be very finely minced, this crusher might not be for you.

I am so pleased with this garlic crusher. All you have to do is peel your clove, place this nifty little device over it, lean a bit of weight onto it and rock the crusher side to side.Once done squishing I just scrape of any little bits off with a spoon and fling it in the dishwasher and it comes out clean (unlike my old garlic press)No wasted bits stuck in the edges like ordinary garlic presses, nicely crushed garlic every time.If your garlic crusher makes you cross then buy one of these and chill out.

I bought one of these for my Mum as she has arthritis and can't use a conventional squeezing type of garlic crusher. I was so impressed with hers, I got one for myself. Just place on top of your garlic clove and rock from side to side. It crushes the garlic perfectly with no waste whatsoever. All you need to do then is tip into your cooking. Absolutely brilliant and because it is a single piece of steel, there are no parts to break or snap. A fantastic buy. Can't recommend it highly enough.
