There is a LOT I like about this shell. The basics: It's a hard shell which in my use is much more appropriate and versatile than a soft shell. Fit is appropriately to size...meaning it runs a little large on the size scale BUT that's expected...you're wearing stuff underneath it. Loose in the shoulders (again, on my frame) means it wears well under a ruck but doesn't mess with your movement. Length is right on, somewhat below the belt line. Sleeves are a touch long again, to allow for shift of the shell under ruck. When I have my ruck on the sleeve length is perfect, as well as having velcro cuffs to dial in the fit on the wrists. There's good ventilation in the shell as well, and on its own it rides quite light. Construction is sturdy....good stitching and the material is going to hold up over the long haul. It manages to ride that line between over and under built. For me the star of the show here is the insulation - a separate made-for-the-shell fleecy thing. My original go-to shell/insulation combo is the Marmot with a new(er) design WindShirt, though the two do not attach to each other. The practical effect is that the WindShirt sleeves ride up when putting on the shell. Here the inner fleece attaches to the shell via snap loops at the colllar and sleeves, as well as zips up the torso....so you have in effect a single item to wear. Great! On its own, the fleece looks sharp and certainly stands alone very nicely for non wet chill.OK, so the fashion stuff out of the way, how does it perform? Fantastic. The shell is certainly waterproof (er....water RESISTANT) and guards against wind as well. The hood dials in via back-mounted drawstring AND has cutouts to save your peripheral vision. When on and drawn it works very well. There's a slight brim as well on the hood.Pockets....appropriate. This isn't meant to hold a TON of stuff but has enough space to hold things you want very easy access to...GPS, snack pack, etc. The pockets themselves aren't voluminous but do hold a decent amount without bulging or messing with your center of balance. This is, I have to say, my new go-to. I can't imagine any situation in my backcountry adventures where this shell wouldn't be an asset. It packs down to almost nothing in a compression sack (well, sans the fleece of course) and the weight is negligible.I've heard of Jack Wolfskin over the years but I've never had the opportunity to use it...apparently it's a very large business in Europe but is just coming to the US. If this shell is any indication of what they have, I say welcome to the US! A very good shell.

Good quality utilitarian jacket. Not the most stylish but well made, practically designed, warm and waterproof. Ideal everyday dog walking jacket. RecommendedProsVery well made and feels high quality with good zips, sturdy and deep pockets with zips and good stitching.Comfortable.Excellent hood. Best hood I have ever found on a coat. Does not restrict movement or visibility but keeps your face dry. Doesn't rustle much when moving and has a draw string on the top that tightens the hood on the crown of the head.Removable and very good quality and warm fleece liner that can be worn separately.Fully waterproof in heavy rain.ConsIf you are not particularly sensitive to the cold then the coat is quite baggy when the fleece liner is removed. In this case it is better to try a size smaller than you would expect.Looks good as a walking coat but not that stylish.

First a word about the supplier who deserves 5 stars for customer relations. It was MY fault I ordered the wrong size which I discovered after jacket had arrived. Asked supplier for his return address so that I could return at my cost. Instead, Supplier sent pre paid label. I returned the Jacket a day later and then two days later received a full refund. In the meantime the right size jacket was on its way.The Jacket and inner fleece are extremely well made. Put the jacket on and went for a 'yomp' around Exmoor, it had been snowing and was bitterly cold the jacket kept me very warm and the icy cold air out. Later that day, I took my dog out late afternoon along the canal and the rain hammered down.Doggie got soaked buy I remain 100% dry. Have had different jackets over the years but this has to be 'simply the best'

I wanted a coat that is mesh lined because I tend to get very hot in winter coats. This coat is well made and has managed to keep me and warm, but not too warm, for the last couple of weeks. The fleece fits neatly into the coat and is easy to detach and re-fasten. I like this coat very much and intend to make good use of it through the winter, spring and autumn, with and without the fleece. Why not 5 stars? Although it was discounted from recommended retail price, I still think it is expensive (at over 100 GBP), and that there is a strong element of paying for the brand. That said, I do think the wolf's paw is a nice corporate logo!

Good sizing, nicely finished, warm and one important thing, the zip does not scratch my chin when fully closed.I rarely get a jacket that does not bother me when fully zipped :)Important to say also that the method used to join both parts of the jacket is simple and does not move at all. the inside polar jacket is warm by itself and could keep you warm at outdoor temperatures of 5 to 7 degrees with no need for the waterproof jacket.Tried it in two pretty Irish storms and not a drop in.Pretty good and price is darn good for the quality you get.I would buy a second one in a different colour :)

I like this coat. The zip out lining is nice, You can put it in for colder weather. I would say this coat would be good down into the 20 degree range. Or take the lining out and have a good rain/wind jacket. The outer shell is fairly heavy duty, so it's more than just a windbreaker. Good front pockets with zippers and a detachable hood. (I generally do not like hoods). This is an extra large, and fits well. Im 6'2" 220. It fits well, but there is not a lot of extra room in the middle. If you are bigger than that, go up a size, which I might have to do after Thanksgiving dinner.

I bought this to give me a warm jacket and it is definitely providing that. The inner fleece can be worn on its own as a jacket if it's not too cold and the outer layer provides a nice jacket if it's not too cold outside. Together it's one of the warmest jackets I've ever worn and quite happy with the purchase.I would have liked the outer jacket to be slightly smaller as the large feels like an extra large at least which I'm guessing is in order to be able to combine the two layers without any issues.

Love this jacket; rainproof and breathable. Looks great too.The fleece is really easy to separate from the main jacket & easy to re-attach.Size-wise; I'm 6"2 and skinny-ish (32 waist) and the large fits me fine, I certainly wouldn't want to go any bigger. Worth noting in most conditions you only need a t-shirt on underneath the jacket & fleece as its warm enough to around -3C (for me anyway) so again, large is fine as its breathable but allows room for another layer (i.e. a jumper) if needed.

This beats my experience of Regatta and North Face jackets hands down. The seperable fleece and waterproof outers are fantastic individually or together. The fleece is well sized, soft and warm. Ample pocket space and the velcro sleeve adjustments are great to keep the cold from sneaking up the coat arm.The waterproof is much more breathable than typical, cheaper, waterproof coats and dries in no time once the rain stops.Highly recommend.

This is a good XL size comfortably on the larger side of the size. Zips are good and large so easy to find with cold gloved fingers. Velcro cuffs. Hood does not fold away in itself but is shaped with a peak so good in windy rain, neck and mouth properly protected. Liner zipped in like it belongs. Two good top open pouches inside the liner. Snug, warm and dry. No breast pocket, where I would keep my phone and earbuds hence 4 stars.

Really good jacket. I bought this for my Iceland trip (coincidently) and I was so glad to have found this jacket. It worked amazingly, I never felt any cold despite several doses of Icelandic winds and rains. In the entire summer I've been using the outer part on its own for rainy moments and it's very waterproof. I wouldn't say it is completely waterproof, but unless it rains cats and dogs, you won't get wet at all.

I absolutely love this coat. I had a cheap one from the high street, and feelign a bit flush decided to get a better one, and this one is so good I almost look forward to bad weather. The wind and waterproof-ness is excellent but it doesn't feel at all industrial, and the lining zips out to make a fleece. Pockets are really practical, and the real acid test is that it keeps me dry and warm on a motorbike.

This jacket looks and feels quality. The material is nice and when worn with the zipped in fleece its very warm. I ordered medium and it did feel a little big - Im 186cm or 6ft 1 and 75 kilo / 11.5 stone. However I do think this type of jacket would be too small for me in the smaller size and you need it to cover your hips to keep you warm so if you are of similar dimensions this would be the one to get

Quality garment as expected from this brand however as usual with jack wolfskin jackets the sizing seems to be in the middle of sizes when compared to other makes. The large feels a bit neat and the extra large feels a bit roomy. It may just be me but this isn't usually a problem with other manufacturer's.All that said for the price I paid I'll lose a few pounds

Works fine as a basic jacket and its good value for money - particularly as it comes with a fleece - although the weight of the material isn't the same as you would get for a more expensive jacket. It's got a chest pocket which I wanted. My only criticism is that there is no system to roll up the hood - a small built in pocket on the collar would have been great.
