Up until recently I have almost exclusively looked to metal miniatures or hard plastic figures to feed my wargaming habit and I am aware that, in some wargaming circles at least, soft plastic 1:72 soldiers are somewhat looked down upon. I started out with Airfix plastics and “graduated” on to metal and then hard plastic minis but as my disposable income has decreased over the years I have returned to this medium and have been delighted at what I see. It is still a thriving market and the quality of the products has increased dramatically with many new companies out there manufacturing great figures. Prices remain relatively cheap too with a box of around 50 figures costing anywhere between £5 and £10.This box from Italeri is,in my opinion, a terrific set. For your money you get 50 crisply cast (very little flash), detailed British paratroopers. Although the plastic used is not the same as the hard plastic used by the likes of games Workshop it is still relatively hard and not as soft or bendy as some other 1:72 figures. There are some minor historical inaccuracies such as the ammo pouches being a little too low on the belt and the PIAT having a bipod instead of a single supporting strut. The poses are generally very good and although the grenade throwing character looks a little odd, I have no doubt that a reasonably skilled modeller could rectify this with a bit of minor conversion work.I intend to use these for wargaming purposes so these issues are not a problem. Out of the 50 figures 48 can be used on the table. The 2 figures I would not be able to use are the ones posed with parachute harness on ready to jump. However, this is still a nice sculpt and would have a place in a diorama, vignette or as a character piece. All the figures are dressed in their standard issue Denison smock and steel helmets and most of the helmets have the netting with strips of hessian camouflage. The soldiers are equipped a variety of sten guns, Mk4 Lee Enfields and Bren guns. There are a couple of prone poses one of which is a Bren gunner who is in mid magazine change, which I think is a nice touch. With the correct preparation (wash in soapy water and use an appropriate primer) these guys paint up very well. There is sufficient detail that will allow shading and highlighting techniques to be used. A quick look on the internet turns up some fantastic examples of what can be achieved with these types of figures. All in all I recommend this set, particularly for the budget conscious Second World War wargamer.

Brilliant! The mouldings on these 1:72 paratroopers are second to none, fantastic detail on the figures and very minimal or any flash, Italeri produce some great model soldiers, delivered on time and packaged well from the supplier. All in all a great buy.

nice product, good selection of positions, as with all these types of models, more injured men would be better
