I bought this game in Oxfam. I very rarely play any `computer' games and I had no great hopes for it. I bought it mostly for the curiosity value and to support a good cause. Particularly as I realised that the game is almost ten years old!It took me a while to get it to work during which I almost gave up a few times, but eventually it was up and running. It's necessary to apply two patches (to be found through internet search/PC version), and as far as I can tell it won't work on 64bit systems.I do like coming to things with no knowledge or real expectations and so this game was a revelation, proving to be absorbing on all levels. The theme of the game is about searching for a lost couple,a couple who went missing searching for information related to a murder that happened years earlier. To complete the game you have to learn a whole lot about what they were researching and what got them into trouble, you also have to complete various puzzles along the way. The game unfolds using locations around Europe and at various stages sequences of video are supplied filmed in those locations. The amount of depth provided is fascinating and you do feel involved in a developing story. A lot of the resources are provided, many of which are on the internet. The sites linked to the game have a retro' feel, in that they are low bandwidth and fairly basic, but this adds to the feel as you are searching for people who have disappeared some time ago and the websites are of that time. When following links, it's actually quite difficult to tell which are genuine sites are and which are ones set up for the game. There is great deal of thought put into the immersive experience of the game such as emails (to your genuine address) that are received from interested parties offering help and guidance. The puzzles that need to be completed are mostly quite difficult, but thoughtful and intriguing. The theme of the game and many of the puzzles is secret knowledge, esoterica; and so if you enjoy poking around Rennes le Chateau or reading Giordano Bruno then this is the game for you!The game does require a lot of commitment and that perhaps puts people off; there are no aliens or anything exploding! But the ingenuity of the game provides an experience that, over a few days works its way into the mind and gets you thinking. There is a sequel apparently for which I would have no hesitation paying full price.

Contrary to what the reviewer below me says, this game isn't a single bit like Blair Witch. The aim is to unlock the inner depths of the extremely well designed CD supplied by the serial killer 'The Phoenix'. With each puzzle, or mini-game you solve, The Phoenix allows you to see more video camera footage of the two who're kidnapped (Jack and Karen), and piece by piece you put together the puzzle of who The Phoenix is, and why he's committed such atrocious crimes. You receive updates via email from other "friends" who are helping to crack the disc, and all sorts of japery and hints will help you along the way. The game has a nice learning curve, and is full of a broad variety of tasks, including using a hell of a lot of lateral thinking, which can sometimes involve searching the web for specific websites in order to get a clue as to how a puzzle should be solved. Rather than have The Phoenix be a sort of boring humdrum character, the disc unfolds a mystery shrouded in esoteric symbols, ancient cults and divine worship. It really is a terriffic game. It's dripping in atmosphere and the disc itself is incredibly well designed. The sound, the Flash games, and the general all-round quality of it is first rate. The acting is really impressive for a game. Whether you're a fan of puzzle games, point 'n' click, adventure, or even an FPS fan looking for something new, you absolutely cannot go wrong with In Memoriam.Think of it more like "Se7en: The Game". Surely that alone justifies your purchase.

In Memoriam is a new type of adventure game, one that involves using the internet (to access emails and web sites), in addition to the game's puzzles, presented in a very unique way.I dont wish to spoil the fun for you by giving out details about the game. What you need to know is that a serial killer has sent a "spooky" cd-rom, with videos of the 2 missing journalists and puzzles that you need to solve, in order to understand who this "lunatic" is.The interface and atmosphere of the game reminds of the movie "Seven", the images, sound clips and videos are of an exceptional quality and atmosphere. If you ever wanted to live an experience like the movie "seven" or "silence of the lambs",this is the chance. The game does not require an expensive pc in order to play it. This brings to mind the old saying "playability is what makes the game, not the graphics!!"One minor flaw of the game however is the traditional, poor packaging. You get a dvd-rom case, an insert with the manual and the cds... The good old times of Infocom and Magnetic Scrolls are long gone, when the package included many more extras which could be used in the game. I think "In Memoriam" could use such extra "trinkets", it would add to the atmosphere.Nevertheless, as a die hard adventure games fan and collector, I recommend this game to all players, adventure games fans or not!

If you want a game that incorpates using your brain power for something other than the endless conveyer belt of beat em ups and footie games and you like a challenge. Then In Memoriam is for you. It is the one original game concept i have come across for years. It is both internet and CD based and it draws you in from the first time you play. The game is based around the disappearance of two people by a person calling himself the Phoenix. He taunts and teases you with puzzles and clues. You can get info and help from the various internet sites and you recieve emails from other people involved in the game. I have only just scratched the surface of the game ( thats a clue by the way )but time has flown by when i have been playing this game and that is a good sign in my book. The puzzles i have come across are of medium difficulty and you never seem to get stuck. This game has won numerous awards and you can see why. A truly interactive and consuming game you WILL be involved.

I thought this was the most origional game I've ever played, and I was completely hooked, playing until 2 or 3 in the morning. I particularly liked the internet research aspects, but the games were also origional, and I got as much fun from working out what to do as I did from playing them. I didn't enjoy the manipulation games as much, especially trying to use a touch pad!I had quite a problem getting started, as the videos just green screened. And you need to see the videos. So the internet research started early, finding and downloading a patch. One warning, the internet searches frequently reference help and walkthrough sites, so you have to be careful.Like several other reviewers,I thought the ending was very poor. I appreciate the idea of running in real time, but don't think it works. Something more spectacular is needed. But I think the rest of it justifies the 5 star rating.

I thought this game was excellent. Unique in concept and deeply atmospheric it contains moments of true gaming genius. The challenges in the game can be roughly divided into two types There are mini-games in the style of simple arcadey one-screen games and more cerebral challenges requiring information from the net or lateral thinking. it is these challenges that are the most satisfying and it genuinely is a great feeling when you succeed in a tricky puzzle and get the next piece of the story.Overall, a really great game if you like the ARG aspects, possibly not if you'd rather have a straight up puzzle/adventure type thing.

I'd hate people to think that they can't play this and therefore end up missing out on a truly disturbing and innovative experience (I could only give it four stars for 'fun' - some of it isn't 'fun' at all, although it is brilliant!).The server for the game moved years ago and you need to download a patch to enable yourself to register. It's available on CNET. Once you've done that - takes all of five seconds - you're ready to be immersed in an amazing and sometimes unpleasant world.Very, very clever, as well as horrible and frustrating!

This is a fantastic idea for a game, as long as you're prepared to do some work for your enjoyment. If you prefer wanding around shooting things, this isn't for you. The games are at just the right level - not so difficult that you get bored and give up, but easy enough with a bit of application. The only drawback is the ending which is a huge let-down. The makers are obviously leaving it open for a sequel, but instead it almost makes all your hard work seem a waste of time.
