This is a warning: A love for good espresso is an expensive habit!!!I've been making my own espresso at home for 20 years. Every morning I would grind the beans, measure and tamp them into the filter, add water, steam my milk, and then wash the entire machine and repeat. I have to wake up early because this is a time consuming process. I've tried other pod machines, and they just don't make a good cup of espresso.I recently began using the illy Francis Francis Y1 with iperEspresso capsules, and the result is better than my manual method, and takes a little over a minute a cup.Generally, I take my cappuccino cup and heat an ounce of milk in the microwave for 30 seconds, use a hand frother for just a few seconds, press the button on the Y1, and in about 20 seconds it brews a 1 or 2 ounce shot of perfect espresso (you have to depress the button when you think it is finished - there is no auto shutoff). Wham, bam, done!As far as I know, the iperEspresso system is the only "pod" that comes close to a real cup of espresso with crema. And this crema is really a thing of beauty. If you don't know what I'm talking about, try it once and you'll understand. As someone who likes strong coffee, the dark roast is almost not strong enough, but the flavor is so well balanced. It's the perfect blend of bitter and sweet with a body worth savoring. This isn't cheap, and it's more wasteful than grinding your own beans. So take that into consideration. But, I've only had espresso this good in Italy. Constant trips to Italy would be very wasteful and expensive, so that's my barely rational justification.I'd also like to share that the Y1 seems to be the most affordable offering in illy's line of iperEspresso systems. It retails for $295, but illy offers a promotion where you can buy the Y1 for $125 when you order a minimum of 2 canisters (21 count) through illy's website (illyusa.com). There are no other requirements to fulfill. So the machine and the coffee adds up to less than the cost of the machine itself. I took advantage of this deal and I couldn't be happier. This coffee will put a new spin on your day. Not to sound too cheesy, but I can't wait to wake up each morning and enjoy my first cup.

Everyone complaining about the price should really take a walk to a coffee store or caffe. Coffee has risen in price the past couple years. Add to that the euro and you'll know why these capsules are more money.BTW, currently Amazon has a 6 pack of canes for 89.99. That's free shipping and comes out to $14.99 which is what the cans costed when they initially rolled out the iperEspresso system.I have been using the black can for some time now. Do not even consider buying the red, medium, roast. This dark roast is exactly what espresso should be like, dark and bold and delicious. The crema produced from this coffee is very very good. sugar will sometimes just sit on the top,as a proper espresso should. My review is for the black top can, which is my favorite one.I have also tried the red, blue and green. I've already given my impression on the red, it's so-so. The blue top can is for luongo(long) shots. These are excellent for making an Americano. Use two of these pods plus very hot water(6-8ozs) and you'll have an absolutely delicious Americano coffee. The green top cans are decaf and I am not a big fan of decaf but they are decent. I always have a can around for when guests like to have a decaf espresso. So each espresso will cost you 95 cents. While that is a pretty hefty price, you are getting caffe quality espresso, which would run you about $2 in any coffee shop. It's a lifestyle choice, you could always get a stove top macchinetta from Bialetti and make espresso that way but you will never ever achieve the quality and crema like these illy capsules produce.Enjoy your coffee everyone!

Expensive and not eco-friendly, but I ship all my pods back to illy (hopefully they actually recycle them). But shots are impossible to screw up and deliver a consistent flavor each time.Classico: The flavor you get at an illy cafe. Very smooth and an understated flavor profile.Classico Decaf: Maybe just a mental thing, but not as good as the caffeinated version. But gets the job done when I need a decaf shot later in the day.idillyum: Nice and light flavors and well balanced. I haven't been able to equate it to any other espresso I have had.Intenso: The closest thing to a Starbucks shot. It is ok, but the roast overpowers the flavors a bit.Etiopia: My favorite, intense and complex flavors.Reminds me of the shot I get at my favorite local coffee shop where they roast their own Ethiopian beans.Have not tried the single-origin Guatemala, Brasile or Colombia.

It has been often said that you get what you pay for. And generally that is true. But not always. I'm happy to say that this is a true statement here. Yes- these capsules are not cheap. The issue is are they worth the price? And the resounding answer is YES! I also have the Francis Francis X1 machine that takes the paper lined pods. The X1 is a much nicer machine than my X8. Yet I cannot pull as consistently as good a shot using the paper pod as I do using the capsule. I would say the paper pods are great 80% of the time. The capsules are great 95% of the time and have a better, thicker creama. The dark roast is especially good. My wife and I prefer it to the normali (red banded can) roast. It has a deeper flavor with less acidity.

in my official quality of sicilian coffee addict (... well, almost all sicilians are), i can say for sure that illy is the best coffee available today in italy except perhaps for some niche, artisanally producted blends. forget about lavazza and similar, illy is another planet. a flawless arabica blend not too roasted, absolutely not too dark and bitter. recommended; costly but really we're talking quality. and the capsules (but notice: they're compatible only with illy francis & francis machines) are virtually indistinguishable from a good bar espresso. if you want a slightly darker, less foamy drink you'll have, of course, to use the ground blend with a bialetti (and *only* a bialetti)"moka express", the italian "caffettiera":

Illy really got it right. I have tried the E.S.E pods from Illy and others. The taste of the IperEspresso Capsules is superior. The Creama is outstanding. I also have a Jura Z5 super automatic and it can't match the taste of IperEspresso even using Illy whole beans. The Illy IperEspresso machines are very simple to use and to clean. The downside is the capsules are expensive, about 75 cents a shot compared to 50 cent a shot from the super-automatic. But, using the Amazon's new subscription service the cost has dropped to about 63 cent a shot. If you like the taste of Illy coffee this is one of the best ways to enjoy it.

Pleasantly surprised by the quality of these. As other reviewers have said, these are similar in quality to freshly ground Illy beans. I should say that they are still not as good as freshly roasted beans from an artisan roaster which are then ground to order, but that essentially is a different product entirely. For a consistent espresso or espresso-based drink with minimal or no cleanup, these offer a great depth of flavour and a very pleasant drink. Please note that these will only work with Illy Iperspresso machines, so are not compatible with Nespresso, Tassimo or ESE.

I'm a home roaster because I like freshly roasted coffee, but these Illy espresso pods taste just about as fresh as my home roast. Illy is the one company that seems to understand how crucial freshly roasted coffee is. Nothing else matters if the beans are stale. These pods produce an impressive layer of crema, with a great taste. I drink it straight, or with some steamed milk and a shot of vanilla as a vanilla latte, and it tastes much better than anything I can get at local coffee shops. If you're thinking about it, I'd say go for it. You won't be disappointed.

I have been an Illy drinker for 8 years or so. Previously I was making their drip and espresso in regular makers. After purchasing one of the Illy capsule machines last year, I have been hooked. There is no better way to make espresso in my opinion. Each pod produces the same flavor and crema (cream)on top of the shot. The dark roast is a nice dark, even roast and I have never had any burnt taste from any of their pods. Recommended for sure now that the Amazon price on the dark roast is starting to come down.

Was very skeptical about these living up to the real deal (I'm an illy lover, so very defensive and snotty about how my coffee is made!) but I'm so glad I gave them a go. The tatse is spot on. So similar to a freshly ground cup of illy espresso that any difference is pretty much undetectable unless you're some kind of walking mass-spectrometer.If you dont have time to grind your own coffee or faff around with pre-ground stuff then this is a perfectly good alternative. If you love illy, you'll love these.

I am def a coffee snob , most high street coffee for me is undrinkable , particularly Starbucks. Illy being 100% arabica is fine coffee and not made up of robusta like most filler coffees. This is best capsule coffee available , period . If you want to taste metal in your coffee, go Nespresso. If you want good quality capsule , go Illy. App available for store location which I use worldwide. This is the cheapest source of illy I can find easily, eBay £11.50 ish.

Great espresso! Been drinking this for years now. The medium roast is just about the perfect middle ground for espresso. The flavor is rich and smooth, and the convenience of the iper capsules can't be beat. I'm amazed that you can get almost the same freshness and quality from this delivery method (as compared to other coffee machines/blends I've tried) as you would from a full tilt espresso machine. If you own a illy iper machine, definitely get this.

This coffee is from far the best capsule coffee I ever had . I was a fan of Nespresso Expresso blackBut this medium roast is just so impressive as if you are drinking a coffee from an Italian coffee house .From the moment you open the can you will smell the roasted coffee unlike most other coffee capsules .The only downside is the price , MY ORDER ARRIVED TODAY WITH TWO MISSING COVERS OUT OF 4 BOXES fortunately they are all aluminium sealed !

By far and away my favourite of machine coffees, with a medium-strong flavour with a fantastic crema, much better than expected. This is an all purpose coffee that makes fantastic frothy-coffee as well as straight espresso - my usual.Very reasonably price especially when using Amazon Pantry for monthly subscriptions of the stuff, and keeps me awake when i need it. Hard stuff to find too in the shops, even where I bought the machine ironically.

This is my favourite of the standard Illy espressos. It is medium flavoured and produces lots of long lasting crema. This is an all purpose coffee that makes fantastic frothy-coffee as well as straight espresso. I usually drink it black, but have taken to caramel lattes made with this and shots of caramel coffee syrup. Sheer decadence. This is a good price too, I don't mind paying a reasonable price for excellent coffee.
