I tested this with an i7 8700K and an ASUS Z370 micro-ATX motherboard. As connecting up the RGB header to enable the RGB lighting controls would've required a decent amount of surgery on my PC (video card removed, dig out the manual etc. etc.) I didn't connect up the RGB cable provided - it plugs into a seperate port from the SATA and power connectors. Without that cable, the drive simply glows red but doesn't change colour (you'll also need your motherboard's RGB control software; for me, that's ASUS's Aura app). At least, that's what I assumed you'd do - the instructions are some very vague diagrams mostly just showing you how to mount it in an SSD tray in your case. I would add that when lit up,the drive gets not-quite-hot-but-definitely-not-just-warm to the touch and will thus be a source of heat inside your case.My C: drive is a Sandisk 512GB SSD, which scored 557mb/sec sequential reads and 477mb/sec in sequential writes. In comparison, the Kingston HyperX scored 535mb/sec and 526mb/sec, so it's decently faster at writing and marginally slower at reading. In practise, however, the drive is entirely acceptably quick for an SSD - there are faster, but you'll need to pay if you want it. I copied a 5GB file back and forth between the SSD drives and got varying, but similar speeds and expectedly short copying times. This isn't a slow drive at all, and if you're don't yet have an SSD in your system, you'll be amazed at the speed boosts across the board they provide. After formatting with NTFS, you get 223GB available. Usefully, you also get a download code for Acronis disk imaging software if you're upgrading and want to clone an existing installation onto the new drive - there are other free alternatives out there, but it's useful to be pointed to one. The HyperX is therefore "decent" if not "absolutely amazing" value for money and will behave exactly as you'd think an SSD should. You also get a bit of bling if you're prepared to do your homework connecting it up....

Hard drives have come a very, very long way in previous years - making the transition from big, bulky, noisy and fragile to small, sleek, power houses that look cool and offer insanely fast reading and writing speeds. This HyperX SHFR Fury is a solid state drive that offers 240gb of storage, RGB lighting (customisable through included software) and 3D NAND. Without a doubt this drive looks remarkable all lit up - used internally it can form part of a very nice gaming rig but even externally (used in a transparent enclosure) it still makes people take notice. Just make sure you have a RGB controller or compatible motherboard to use this feature to save the expense down the line of having to buysomething else. The advantage of solid state drives is that they have no moving parts and are more robust, therefore I opted to use this as a external drive to back-up my photography and personal data. The faster read and write speeds were welcome (as opposed to just the visual appeal), as I encrypt my data in case I loose the drive - I saw a huge difference in file transfer speeds over my current 250Gb western digital drive.Price per gigabyte is a bit higher than other drives of the same capacity - you do pay that little bit extra for the style on offer, if you have a solid case without a window then the lighting effects would most likely be lost and therefore you would be better looking elsewhere, however like I mentioned in a gaming rig this is a brilliant addition.

This SSD drive (I had the internal version but an external one with kit is also available) sets itself apart by having some very bright and noticable RGB LEDs on top. Both the logo and 2 side cut outs glow brightly inside the case once connected up.In the box you'll get the SSD drive and an RGB cable to connect it to the motherboard or lighting controller. If you don't have a lighting controller on your system it will still glow red once you connect the power but you won't be able to change colours. You will need a spare SATA cable port and a power supply cable as these aren't included. The speed results from a basic speed test worked out a fair bit slower than the equivalent Sandisc SSD Plus I have in my system, which may be in part due to the draw of RGB power, but it was still far faster than my standard Hard Drives at reading and writing data, so there are gains if you only have a hard drive in your system. It also comes with downloadable cloning software if you want to move your Windows boot drive to the SSD to make the PC boot much faster. The only downside of this product is the price, mostly due to the cost of the RGB element. For the same price you can get a faster or larger SSD drive, but the speed won't make a huge difference to the average user as it will still seem miles faster than a hard drive, so it really comes down to how important the lighting is for you. It's certainly an impressive element to add to your system, though, looks-wise.

This drive really is just for showing off at a lan party isn't it?For most system builds, you're really not going to get the benefit of the light show capabilities as the majority of cases will have most of the drive hidden away in the drive bay area. So for there to be any point to having an RGB light SSD drive you need to have a case that puts your drive right in view. Some cases have a mounting space at the bottom which would be ok, or you have a clear perspex unit or open build.. hmmm..This drive unit is surprisingly heavy, but it's very sturdy. Included with it is a micro-usb style connection on one end and the other end of the cable has a 4-pin header plug to hook this into your RGB controller or supporting motherboard. You also get a daisy-chain connector to link up to other devices. You need to make sure you have the RGB support onyour system or you will not get your cool lighting effects, it will default to glow a nice bright red.Performance of the drive does seem to be pretty good. However, pulling in around 500MB/s read and write, there are a few better performers around and if you really want the best performance, you're better spending that extra money on an NVMe drive instead and then get lightning speed.

Great little external drive with a large capacity. I've got the 240 gb version. It has the look of something that is designed for gamers, and that may be the case. But I'm no gamer and just user it as additional storage for music production files and video clips. Connected to my Windows 10 laptop via the supplied cable to my laptop it works smoothly and just appears as another drive in file explorer. Using it I don't perceive any significant drop in file access/loading speeds. Being an SSD drive with no moving parts it works silently. Nor have I sensed it heating up at all. For me the lighting up thing is a bit of a novelty really. It might appeal more directly to the previously mentioned gamers of course. To me is just a good quality file storage solution which at the current Amazon price of £82 represents reasonable value
