This is my overview of living, working and playing with the HP Omen laptop (free for review from the Amazon Vine Customer Review Programme) over the last six months.I've not rushed this one by any means, I've had to get to know this machine, learn it's quirks and get into the swing of things. And it does have some flaws, even though it's a £1,100 unit, and a brilliant performer its not perfect, but it is not by any means a bad laptop. It's got looks, it's got grunt, it's really hitting lots of highs...So the lows? Storage, abysmally small SSD at only 128GB, with the windows install, once you have a single modern game on there (like PuBG) it's full. The secondary 1TB of storage on a mechanical hard drive doesn't compare in speed terms. Then there's the memory, only coming with 8GB, it's fine for basic gaming or office work, but this machine is almost a hybrid between a gaming machine and a workstation. But that latter roll, the versitility, is reduced by there only being 8GB of RAM.And, the cost of a second 8GB stick to make this a 16GB machine and also put in a larger SSD is paltry, compared to the purchase price, HP really are cutting their nose off to spite their face as people will be turned away from a brilliant base performance machine as they don't want to faff adding RAM or changing storage in a brand new machine!Aesthetically it's a fantastic machine too, looks brilliant, with a lush metal brushed finish on the working keyboard surface, but then the key caps themselves are plastic and worse still they feel like floppy plastic when you come to type on the machine with any gusto. The RGB lighting is a delight, and the included HP apps to help set it up are very easy to get to grips with, of just turn everything off.Battery life was acceptable, so it's still working this way after 6 months, on pure battery, gaming in 1080P you get about 1h30m. Productivity work on battery (rendering a video or compiling a heavy workload) you get about 3h, light office and surfing you'll get 4+ hours. But that' only half a working day, so inevitably you will be carrying the large power brick around with you too.And the connectivity of that power brick leaves a lot to be desired, it sits on the right hand side of the machine and you just want it out of your way (as a right handed mouse user).Other I/O on the machine, the networking over both Ethernet and wifi, the three USB 3 ports, the single USB C. The full-sized HDMI and mini Display Port as well as SD Card slot, and both mic and headphones 3.5mm jack are really very good.It does run hot though, and you will notice the fans. Indeed, if it's been running hot and you shutdown the fans and system itself will not fully power off until it's detected itself being cool enough. And in this mode you can close the lid assuming it's going to go off... It's not, if you close the lid at this point and store it in your bag, it'll eat through it's power in an idle mode, which is really annoying. The processor is top notch, 6 cores 12 threads, it chews through work like there's no mistake about it.It boosts a single core, but runs all at an average 2.5ghz. When idle it throttles right down, and I've seen cores clock as low as 800mhz to save you battery/power and importantly reduce heat. But those 12 cores, you can game, whilst capturing video and compressing it, there's just enough horse power to do nearly anything you could throw at the processor today, so long as it's on socket power rather than battery you need never worry about performance. The screen is a 120hz refresh rate, of course games don't run at this very often, they achieve 34-40 in Unigine Heaven Benchmark, and up to 60hz when you temper some settings down. But in desktop/productivity mode 120hz is so crisp and clear, the screen is a huge boon to this unit, it really sets it off well. So, that's my overwhelmingly positive, but not perfect overview.Watch this space for some of the other videos I've recorded over the last 6 months with this unit, as I've really struggled to peg it into either the gaming, productivity or laptop genres, it's a jack of all trades, master of none.

The 1TB hard drive has plenty storage while the operating system loads in rapidly from SSD memory. In terms of power it is not lacking. This is primarily a gaming machine, but it comes with Windows 10 installed and is a very powerful PC. I tested it with Forza 4 and Gears of War 4 and both ran at full HD, with settings at maximum it performed with a very high frame rate. In previous reviews there have been criticism of the display (dead pixels etc.), there is a faint vertical line visible while using some applications. Otherwise, the 17.3-inch display is clear and beautiful. Games look stunning. We also tested it for video editing and rendering with Adobe Premier Pro and After Effects, again at full HD performance was superb. The illuminated keyboard felt less responsive compared with laptops built for business. With HDMI, 2x x USB, and SD card slot, network and headphone socket, it is well connected. However, it is very heavy and quite macho looking aesthetically (from a female point of view!).
