This is my first router, and man oh man... why did I wait so long! Routers are so cool - there's so much you can do with them.As for this one, I haven't had it over speed 3 yet, and it's eating up my 20 year old oak planks like it's soft butter. I've been refining my technique a bit as I had a few thin bits split on me. Moving to the right seems to 'chew' the wood, where as to the left tends to want to make the whole router run away somewhat uncontrolled, but makes a much smoother cut (left and right sort of depend which side of the bit you're talking about, but I'm sure you get the idea). Obviously plunging too deep causes problems too,so multiple passes taking a little big of depth each time is better. In use it's pretty easy to manoeuvre around, although it gets pretty heavy after prolonged use. In my case I'd screwed down a fence and was cutting up to it, and I found this to be a pretty easy way to work. Fully freehand would need some care, so that you're applying enough pressure to move the machine around, but not too much that it can run away by itself. I also found that cleaning up and spraying the black plate on the bottom of the router with some dry PTFE helped with moving it around.Lots of reviews complain about the bits getting stuck in the collet. I found that you put the bit in and tighten up the collet with the supplied wrench. To remove the bit, you undo the collet with the wrench until it goes finger-loose, but the bit doesn't come loose. You have to undo the collet past the 'loose' bit to where you'll need the wrench again, then undo it past the stiff bit and then the bit comes out. Maybe things will worsen over time, but so far so good.Height adjustment is pretty basic. You just 'zero' it by moving a little plastic pointer to the right height, and then push the bit down until you get to the right depth, then tighten a screw. It works well enough, but it's pretty cheesy.Lastly, if this is new to you, then you may be expecting lots of health and safety, guards, interlocks and warning stickers. None of that here - so be sensible. I'd recommend some protective glasses, as wood chips go all over the place. I haven't had this much wood in my face since... ;-)

I bought this router recently. It's easy to use...mostly, and has good power. There are a couple of negatives, though - hence the three stars. The fist time I plugged it in it immediately roared into life. Fortunately I was not near it at the time. I should have checked that the switch was off, of course. Anyway, that was a salutary lesson. The other thing is the collet. I've only used the 1/4" one so far, but like others, I have had problems removing the bit. And I have read all the advice about the nut and turning it past where it first gets loose. Last time I used it I had to take a pair of pliers to the bit and heave it out. This is not what you want to be doing with expensive router bits (fortunately this was an old and well-used straight bit).Hitachi need to sort out this problem.I'm satisfied with the router. It has plenty of power and is easy to use. The manual is OK but a bit sparse. The edge guide is easy to use. But the collet is a major problem.Update April 29 2016: I contacted Hitachi customer support about the collet. They told me that the collet and the nut should not separate at all (mine did). So they sent me a new collet which arrived today and works fine. So that's the thing to do if anyone else has similar problems. Great service from HItachi. Am changing this review from three stars to five.

This was my first router purchase, and I researched it diligently. Although it may look older than the more expensive M12V2, it is in fact the newer model. Why it's £20-£30 cheaper, I don't know, but I'm not complaining! The power of this thing is ridiculous. Using a 12.7mm template profiler, it was like a hot knife through butter. This may in part be due to the quality router bits I used (I recommend Wealden), but it still felt like it had bags of power. Again, I have to prefix this with the fact that it's my first router, but it seemed pretty quiet to me (however, this was using ear defenders, which I strongly recommend for router work, along with safety glasses and a dust mask). The only thing it's lacking is a dust shroud, however, I think that I'll but the M12V2 dust shroud from a spare parts website, and hope that it fits.As far as I know, this is the best 2000W router you can get for £200.

First many thanks to Justasitis for pointing out that when undoing the collet to remove router bit;loosen with spanner then turn outer nut further until it goes tight again the re-apply spanner before removing bitWhen my machine arrived the half inch collet was not inserted in the tightening nut, this caused much frustration, I was about to return it then managed to click them togetherThe quarter inch collet is much sturdierThe machine is great and actually quieter than my old 500 watt Bosch, feels nice in the brief hand-held trial with ample poweredit 2018; this machine is still going strong, only use it in table and excellent !I am fairly new to woodwork and routing. Now I need to work out how to fit it to my recently aquired used Trend Craftsman table; nothing seems to line up on the table supplied base plate - any ideas welcome

Very well made router, purchased to replace my trusty ELU which has finally died after 30 years service. This router is much bigger and heavier than expected but looks like it is up for anything thrown at it. I like that it offers 1/4 and 1/2 inch collet options for two gauges of router bit shank I do like the fingertip control for plunging/locking but it takes a bit of getting used to and initially I found it all too easy to accidentally release the lock mid stroke. Motor is very powerful.Good, (Large!!) heavy duty carry case to protect the tool. Cannot comment yet on reliability I have only had it a couple of months. All in all though a good solid product which I think will see many years heavy duty service.Might need a lighter duty one for more delicate jobs though.

Bought for kitchen worktop install and general DIY.Very nice bit of kit, comes in a case, with a fence, 1/4" and 1/2" collects, 30mm collar for jig use and a 3 position hand grips which work really well, I must point out that if you move the hand grips from the standard position the router won't fit back in the case so you have to unscrew and adjust back to the upright position to store away. The plunge is very smooth but a bit stiff which is causing problems setting tool depth but I will buy the add on fine screw adjuster AND the dust extractor. It comes with a standard 1 year warranty BUT BUT BUT, if you register online this is increased to 3 years free of charge. But all in all,a lovely product.

Good heavy duty routerI've been usiung this to cut through slabs of 40mm and 50mm hardwoods and I'm very impressed. Its a 2 kW machine so it has the extra power when you need it, the layout of the switches seem fine, It's a solid bit of kit.I have some issues: -the speed dial isn't marked, and will adjust itself when the router starts vibrating ( I solved this with a lump of blu-tack.)The carry case is impossible to pack the router back into, and, more importantly, the screws fixing the boss benefit from being replaced with machine screws: the ones supplied vibrate loose and can throw the boss. However, none of these issues was worth removing a star, so 5*

This is my first router so no others to compare with. But it is very heavy which makes it stable to use free hand, and really good power. It is great that it accepts both 1/2" and 3/8", and also comes with the guide bush for the 1/2" bit needed for using a template.Been using this to fit a new kitchen and is proving very useful.I have deducted a star due to lack of mico-adjustment and also lack of dust extraction facility.

This tool benefits from a good sturdy construction and features soft start. The motor delivers excellent power and has very good torque when under load, and it feels good in the hands and like it has been built to last. It has been installed in a router table and has proved to be ideally suited. “I can recommend this well made and well priced router.”

Very good value for money. Having struggled with a cheap sub £50 router thinking I could get away with occasional use I finally decided to invest in a decent machine. This machine. The difference compared to budget models is huge. Everything works, adjustments stay adjusted, slide is smooth, power is smooth and manageable.

28.6.2017

For the price compared to Dewalt or Makita it is good value. Very easy to use, smooth and steady under working. Exactly what you would expect from a rated manufacturer. The only down side was the quality of the case, I have to say is very poor.

6.2.2017

Great router - easily cutting 40mm beech worktops. 4* due as dust extraction hood is not included and case could be better (like the one that came with the Hitachi SDS drill. Despite this still great value for money.

really good router, have used it a fair bit so far and no problems. would definitely recommend this router especially for the price compared to a similar Makita one I was planning to buy initially.

I’m a maintenance engineer and I’m using power tools on a daily basis, this router is of stunning quality and like all Hitachi kit just built for hard work and it’s much cheaper than other brands,

Excellent product let down by poor quality collet sets which were manufactured by cheap supplier. Customer service form Hitachi was excellent and they sent out a new set promptly with no fuss.
