Let's be clear about this. Heroes Over Europe is an arcade flight game, not a sim. It's Ace Combat for WW2 and if you can accept that, you'll likely have a tremendous amount of fun with this. I've always been fascinated with WW2 aircraft and recently decided to try out the two main games in the genre on PS3, IL-2 Sturmovik and this and, between them, I think they offer the perfect balance for anyone wanting flight games with propellors and machine guns and not just locking countless missiles on from 3 miles away. If you want realistic flight, buy IL-2. On it's simulation setting it's very realistic , and tricky, as well as doing away with the entire HUD for absolute realism (a swine when it won't mark ground targets you need to destroy to continue!).But, if you want fun, it's here in spades, and massively superior to the Blazing Angels series.Don't be fooled by the fact that it offers a "Professional" flight mode. All that means is the controls do what they do in real aircraft, but it doesn't mean the physics are remotely accurate. Arcade mode with roll switched off turns the game into a free roaming Afterburner and is best avoided if you want some degree of challenge. Graphically, whoever said this has SNES level graphics has no clue whatsoever. It's not at the vanguard of PS3 games by any means, but the plane models are lovingly recreated, the backgrounds have plenty of detail (better than IL-2, especially on towns), with a stylised, almost watercolour look, at times and the weather effects are very well realised. Like most flight games, ground textures are blurry on close examination, but the only time I noticed them was taking off. Beyond that, everything looks absolutely fine. The sound is better realised than IL-2 as well, with much more varied and involving radio chatter.Mission variety and structure is also, on the whole, more interesting than IL-2 but with two problems. Firstly, you don't get to pick up where you left off if you're shot down or crash, so it's back to the last checkpoint, and the missions, although there are only 15, can be very long, sometimes over 1/2 hour. If you quite mid mission because one annoying part is getting you frustrated, you won't pick up at the last checkpoint next time as there is no in-game save option. It's right back to the beginning. This wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for some really idiotic design choices. Thankfully, on the whole, the missions I've played through have been very fair on Pilot difficulty, with some truly outstanding moments, but two parts absolutely infuriated. One, early on, sees you having to clear mines out the way for 3 ships to come into port. Why can't the damned ships just stop while I clear them? Instead of randomly deciding to ram them even when I thought I'd cleared enough? The game does mark which ones you need to immediately clear, but the only way to complete the level is learn the others so you can clear more than the marked three on each pass. Even worse, later on, is the final section on a raid on Berlin. To escape the flak and get home safely, having spent 30 minutes doing the rest of the mission and not wanting to quit, you have to fly a Mosquito down rivers and streets below roof height. It wouldn't be so bad if the route the game specifies wasn't completely absurd, and the markers for the next turn appearing constantly too late. Another chunk of hair pulled out, teeth ground down and a star taken off the final rating for these silly mistakes.Overall, it's still a great little game which can be picked up at a budget price nowadays (you could have this and IL2 for less than the original retail price of one). Online is fun, if limited, and there are still a handful of people playing it (though they're scarily good). The plane choice is one of the best in all the PS3 WW2 games, including such rare oddities as the P61 Black Widow and Heinkel He 219 and the presentation, while stylised, is very good. I hope there's a sequel in the wings that corrects the silly mission flaws and adds a bit more spit and polish as it'll be well worth investing in.

As a newcomer to gaming (PlayStation 3) it was difficult to decide where to start. I am not into all the punch 'em, kick ''em, gouge 'em stuff and sought advice from experienced 'gamers' before purchase. Heroes Over Europe was recommended by a number of people and I have to say it hasn't disappointed. The game is fun and relatively easy to get into....with skill levels ranging from complete novice (me!!) to Fighter Ace. Controls are well set out and game graphics are high quality, allowing for several differing views from the cockpit. Would I recommend it?? That's four yes's....

I bought this because I wanted a flying game, and a cheap one. I didn't expect much but have to say I really enjoyed it!It's not the most complicated game in the world, it's pure arcade... but the graphics are more than adequate, and the gameplay is great fun! I have IL2 too and that is possibly a more polished game, but is sometimes overly complicated... if you just want to jump in a plane and shoot German bombers for an hour this is the game for you!

I picked this and Blazing Angels up for a friend of mine and he just loves it, it plays great even on his Pentium D with an HD4650 graphics card, looks REALLY cool, and the battles are pretty tense. if you are looking for an ultra hardcore flight sim this isn't it, but if you want a game where you can take to the skies and start dogfighting right off the bat? here ya go. Also plays great on Windows 7 without needing tweaks or compatibility mode.

A flying game that includes Big Ben and the French Alps, scores highly in my book and the attention to detail is impressive. What I liked the most were the fun missions, great visuals, and accessible controls, not to mention pulling off focused "Ace Kills". It is a game you can 'pick up and play' and I will come back to it again and again. 10/10

The graphics are brilliant and the sounds recreate the flying experience extremely well. I could not get on with Hawx and play this more than Hawx. The gameplay is outstanding and the online play is the icing on the cake. Take it from someone who owns the game, this is fantastic!

Not too bad but can be boring quite easily after playing for like an hour. Given that I got it for less than 10GBP, this game is worth buying.
