This is perhaps the biggest scale real time strategy game ever attempted, spanning every country on earth, the entire territory of the planet and a time period of over twenty years, starting in the mid 1930s and ending in the mid 1950s. Players of Europa Universalis will immediately recognise the world map and most of the more simple game options. The game has a number of genuine strengths, perhaps the biggest being the choice of playing options. Armies can invade neighbouring territories, and instead of all units piling in, some units in neighbouring territories can give covering fire without having to enter the territory itself. The weather and terrain options also have a significant impact on combat (for example,it is harder to win a battle if a river runs through the territory). Air units like bombers and paratroops give a new edge to combat, and you can send U-boats to raid your opponents convoys. Also, spies can be used to wreck opponents industries, steal their blue prints and even kill their government ministers. As well as the grand campaigns, the player can take part in a number of historical scenario short games, from operation Barbarossa to the Spanish Civil War. There is also a fictional scenario where the Cold War turns "hot" and the Western Allies end up fighting the USSR and China in a nuclear war just after the end of World War II. This scenario is the most challenging of all given its battles rage across the whole planet, involves massive army sizes and has a nuclear edge to it.The film does have a couple of weaknesses. The first is the relatively complicated interface, where all the countries technology, diplomacy and economy are managed. Secondly, is the at times frustrating difficulty of attacking certain territories, which seem almost impossible to take even with sustained attacks. Thirdly, is the fact the AI is very predictable, especially if you know your history. For instance, the German player always attacks countries in a set order, pretty much exactly when the historical attacks occurred, meaning defenders can easily prepare and predict their opponents. The game is also rather crash prone, so make sure you download the "patches" from the game websites. All in all, this is a must have for strategy fans given its sheer size and challenge. This is especially true if you are a history buff, and/or want to try a more advanced version of real time strategy than the similar Europa Universalis series. This is especially true if you like your history, but the games weaknesses will take some initial getting used to.

The game is simply mind boggling in its ambition to do nothing less but to allow the simulation of the world in the late 30s, early 40s. Diplomacy, intelligence, research, production, all are included and intelligent trade-off's need to be made in order to do the most with the limited ressources available. Allowing the player to do that with a hanful of nations, for which good historical research exists would of course be well within scope of what gaming was prior tothe HoI series, but doing this for over a hundred entities, i.e. all the countries in existence in 1936 and a good many of those that were likely to emerge from the war to follow,is unbelievable. The only reason the game falls short of a full five stars in its out of the box version is the multitude of player designed add-ons and extensions, which help make it even more realistic, playable, and enjoyable (especially in areas such as the technology trees, technology teams and their skillsets available to different countries, more realistic battles (i.e. taking longer, with morale and organisation value altered, more correct starting forces, etc.).Finally, as opposed to the later Hearts of Iron 3, which is fairly poor in the respect of historical determinism (pretty much all the game plays are highly ahistorical), HoI2 strikes an excellent balance between leading to predictable conflicts, while still allowing a human player to modify the outcome, if they decide to play their cards differently. The Doomsday extension also allows the option to import games played in Victoria as a new starting point in 1936, enabling even more creativity and variability in the gameplay.

If you are interested in a game that recreates pratically every detail that you can think of in simulating WW2 on a grand strategic scale, than this is probably the game for you. What you will certainly find abstracted in similar games here will be treated in every minute detail. You should be prepared for a very steep learning curve, as you master the minutie of combat, production, diplomacy, espionage, reserch and whatnot. On the positive side, this game allows you to take control of ANY country involved, not only the major players- so if time is a concern, you could try playing say Sweden and mantain things nice and quick. no other game on the subject gives you so much freedom of choice in selecting your country. Many of the subsystems that compose the game are very well done, I like in particular the way research and espionage is handled. I rate the fun level at only 4 stars because this is not a game you can expect to complete within a reasonable amount of time. It tends to drag on a bit too long. In this respect a faster and more fun could be obtained by playing "Strategic Command 2" or maybe the soon to be published "Making history". one complaint I have with the game are the rules, which are written in microscopic print (in order to mantain the rulebook in 132 pages ...!)and the lack of video resolution options. Other than that, I strongly suggest this game to any (very) serious wargamer, especially at this price. Nothing comes close, realism wise.

To anyone who is debating getting this game or not, just do it. I have never been a fan of old hex-based war games, but I have always liked Civ-style games. This game brilliantly links the two together in a way where you really can shape the destiny of your chosen country. The game starts in 1936 and you can pick any country that existed at that time in the world. Although there is a large range of things you can do with your country, they are all military based. The research that you undertake and the production you organise are all for the purpose of developing your military. If you want to expand via peace, forget it, you have to take it for yourself. The game is very complicated at first though, but after several plays you get used to how it works. I recommend Germany as a first country rather than a small country, as there are plenty of time-fired events that guide you in germany's historical direction if you want. As stated, the manual is pretty thick and isn't easy to pick up and quickly find something. However, the best advice I can give is to go to the official Paradox Interactive forums as there are loads of tips and examples on there of paths to take. This game is quality, even though the graphics are ropey and out-dated. It's such a buzz to take control of a country in near-spot on historical conditions and guide it in whatever direction you want!

How do you start describing a game that has so many beginning points and infinite exit points? You can't.... For example: if you decide to play the germans; will you research naval units so you can invade England? (operation Sealion) or do you research your armored units to race them across Russia? (operation Barbarossa) Will you ally yourself with Japan and risk getting involved in a war with the USA before you are ready?...etc, etc. So that's why I can't explain everything to you. It has so much depth, so many choices that I would exceed my alloted writing space. I have played all mayor nations several times and each has its peculiar traits; giving the game a huge replayability level. There are really very few annoying features in the game (though I get really pissed when I'm not able to airlift my paratroopers between two friendly provinces) and during the course of several months now, it did crash only once. I didn't regret buying Hearts of Iron 2 and I don't regret having bought this stand alone expansion.

HOI2 is a massive improvement over HOI1, in terms of making the game easier to manage. On the other hand, there are still some annoying things that the patches haven't sorted out such as not giving air-transport units the ability to air-transport paratroopers to friendly-controlled hexes(on islands, for example) and the AI makes ridiculous circuitous routes for your division-units if you trace too long a route, so you more or less have to move the units one province at a time in order to ensure the straightest, direct route.Other than that, it is the only wargame so far to genuinely capture some of the magic of the old WWII baordgames such as World in Flames etc.

Hearts of Iron 2 was tremendous, and it just gets better. An essential wargamers game and probably the finest strategy game so far. Please don't add a space dimension or I'll never be able to stop - at least at the moment I feel I might stop when I have played every country twice. You just can't get bored it has such range and depth and the better you get at it the harder it gets.I hated the music (always do) and it took ages to refine the messages to just those I wanted. It could probably do with something interactive like an advisor so that you have someone to talk to at 3am in the morning!!!!

I bought the Hearts of Iron 2 original, last year and have not stopped playing since, very good concept and well executed. However this game is complicated and not for young children/teenagers.Overall Very good game, a new dimension is added with the espionage uses which is good fun to use. Some very minor tweaks needed with the future patches with missing texts etc.Not quite 5* due to the complicity of the game and it can drag on a bit, but still very very good!Buy Now!!!

Bought for me. Played by me. Realised that I dont have enough tome to play this after the first few hours. A really nice game. Just wish I had more time.

Addictive, and the cause of many lost hours of my life. The editor comes in helpful to tweak a few things to customise the experience.
