I've owned a number of tripods over the years from the small table top models to the rather pricey Gitzo's, and likewise I've owned several ball heads from around £60 to £300+. I'd say I have a good appreciation of what the advantages of a good tripod are and what is needed to sort the junk from the brilliant. A tripod will improve your photography if you choose and use well.So when we look at a fairly small, light and surprisingly cheap tripod like this we have to ask ourselves on what basis do we judge it. On price for example it's hard to be too picky because the overall design, build and finish is entirely acceptable. It's just about £30 delivered at the moment! On weight then it's very light but still more than a comparable but much more expensive carbon fibre type, but then again for travel every gram makes a difference. I'd therefore conclude that weight and actually length too is barely acceptable in that context. It is way lighter than most general use tripods but the comparison is as a travel tripod so it's different. When we come to function then it's pretty borderline, but ultimately it manages to scrape in a 4**** review in context of price.Mainly it's borderline because the ball-head is really pushing it quality/build-wise such that my first though actually would be it's scrap. Instead of two separate locking screws there is one. So if you want to move side to side you undo the screw but then the top-plate flops as well. Just take care because your whole camera and lens is likely to flop forwards and may be damaged. You can workaround by only using the ball-head screw to adjust the plate and then the extension tube screw (that fixes the tube to the legs) for side to side. It's not great because it then tends to sink into the legs and the tube/legs fit tolerance isn't great either so it flops. It's all this fuss that counts against effortless, smooth use in practice. But look, let's go back to price again. This isn't a Gitzo priced carbon travel tripod. It's more an infrequent use, cheap and cheerful effort that will just about do the job. It'll still get you better pictures, if you use it well, most times than not using one. I'd recommend it based on that if you have a smaller camera/lens combo like say a mirror-less Fuji X system. You also get a cheap carry bag with it. Personally, I'd rather they'd used the cash for that on a better ball-head. You may be able to upgrade the ball-head.

This Hama Traveller 117 Ball Tripod comes neatly boxed and includes a carry bag. The tripod extends from 35cm to 117cm, weighs 820g and can support cameras up to 4Kg. Other features include a spirit level, quick locking legs, a load hook to provide stability in windy conditions and rubber feet.Overall the immediate impression of this tripod is favourable except for the rather old fashioned looking cork facing on the head - surely Hama could improve the visual appeal by substituting a more contemporary looking alternative? The tripod legs feature three expanding sections and the locking mechanism is easy to use and effective plus the upper legs have a foam coating to make handling easier/offer protection. The splay of the legs can also be adjusted and locked The rubber feet are semi-pointed and provide reasonable stability on most terrain. The centre column is easily adjustable whilst the stability hook can be unscrewed so that you can pendant mount your camera upside down using the tripod screw. The head of the tripod gives plenty of forward and aft travel thanks to two grooves cut into the head. A single knurled knob locks the head in both the vertical and horizontal planes, this approach does have the disadvantage that to pan horizontally (particularly when using a video camera) the camera could move vertically too. In normal use though the head adjustment is fine for a basic, travel tripod.Arguably, you could get a better specced example possibly from a lesser known brand at the same price point. Overall though, for many people, this will be a very usable light, travelling tripod from a respect brand name, for example, someone with a bridge camera or new to the DSLR scene using something like a D3300 etc.

I really like HAMA products having first discovered them whilst living in Osnabruck, Germany in 1980. The products then were of reasonable quality and at a very fair price, so fair that for the less wealthy/ less enthusiastic amateur photographer their product line permits purchase of more than adequate equipment until they can afford better quality. This item is priced at £31.79 as at 26th August 2016. I have had it for 14 days now and recently used it to take around 500 images at the Bournemouth air show. Whilst the weather was very clear, light conditions were not that good and shooting with a Tamron 150-600 on an APS-C camera (1.6 ratio rendering my lens to 225-950 ish)requires a tripod to get those sharp shots at distance. My situation was further complicated in that I had to use a tripod as I have a broken wrist.May I say that this is a very light tripod and with a very heavy lens fitted provided a rock steady platform from its adjustable legs. I am not a supporter of soft foam fittings, but the grips fitted to this item are tolerable and I soon became used to the feel and motion of the head. In many ways the tripod is fairly standard for this price range, including the centre weighted hook to hang a bag on, which provides stability and aids balance. The key feature for any tripod is the head and I founds that this head is excellent at this price point and allowed very smooth panning for shots of high speed aircraft. In summary, competitively priced, lightweight, robust and well worth the money.

A good quality smaller sized tripod for the traveller or those for who space may be at a premium. It folds up into a very neat package which will easily fit on to the side of camera bags or rucksacks. Carrying case included. It is quite a bit smaller than my other tripod, standing just above waist high at maximum extension.I like the construction. It is made of metal and feels stable enough when deployed. There is good flexibility in the angle of leg which will allow deployment on even the most uneven of surfaces, and there is a spirit level on the shoulder to help with level placement. The head can be reversed for ultra low level shots. The ball and socket type of attachment allows good flexibility of tilting of the camera.I don't like the rotation action. It is very uneven, which means that if you were hoping to pan your video camera then you are going to get noise and jerkiness. The combined rotation lock and tilt lock is also a problem as you can't lock one or the other - again this is a problem for videographers.Otherwise though, if you can work with the limitations of the head, and want a smaller tripod then this ticks all of the boxes.

I have two other HAMA tripods. Giant one for really heavy work and a mid-size one which I used when travelling. This one is smaller still and is the ideal traveller’s model. The head isn’t quite as adjustable as the bigger brothers but it is well made and sturdy. You’ll see that you do not get a ‘pan, tilt, lock’ type of adjustment and this is a little awkward especially with a DSLR with a 200mm lens on board but for general use it’s fine. Once locked it’s firm and as normal you’ll need a remote release or use the timed release feature of your camera. On the top is a spirit level and the column inverts for the ‘Bug’s Life’ type of low level pictures. There is a decent hook under the head for hanging your bag on,just the job on those windy headlands! It comes with a shoulder carry case, it’s only 820gms and for this price is the perfect holiday tripod. Also, Mrs Scoop doesn’t get the grumps when the suitcase gets full up with a hulking great version!

I have had many tripods over the years and I often find them to be too big and heavy for when I am out and about in the wilderness. Another problem I have is that they are often too big to fit into suitcases when going on holiday and need to be sneakily smuggled onto aircraft and into overhead storage bins to avoid checking them into the hold and paying extra £££.This Hama model is the solution to that problem. It is small, light, extends to about 4.5 feet in full, and can fit into a smaller suitcase. You could even just sling around your shoulder and wear a coat over it to get onto a low-cost airline if your bags are still full. The shoe doesn't come off, as far as I can tell, which means you'll have to spin the camera around the screw instead. It held my

This is an impressive piece of kit from Hama. The tripod is compact enough to pack into a suitcase or large rucksack, which means it is likely to get used more often than bulkier tripods. Not too heavy, but firm enough to stand solidly when erected, the legs give good flexibility with different height options; the ball joint feels sturdy enough, and there is a hook to attach a weight, to add stability. Non-slip feet also adds to the useful design. Most serious photographers are really sniffy about the quality of tripods; but here's a lightweight one with enough practical features and a solid build quality for everyday enthusiasts to consider. For the cost,it is highly likely to be a good investment - and actually get used.

Great entry tripod. It's very compact and pretty sturdy - took some photos tonight (attached) and I didn't notice any movement. The ball head is great, I tested the camera at a few angles (including upside down) and it all held very solidly (Nikon D5300 with 18-105 lens). I can understand the comments about it being a little fiddly to attached/remove but this is easily rectified by loosening the bullhead and rotating just the top piece. I don't see how it would differ to any other tripod, without a quick release feature. That said, I have purchased XCSOURCE® QR Quick Release Plate which works well with it.

This tripod is perfect for small to med compact cameras.I wanted a tripod which was lightweight enough to carry with a rucksack.Works perfectly with the Canon G15, and for me is that perfect balance of lightweight vs sturdy.Really quick to be ready to take photos, and with the hook built in plenty sturdy enough in high wind with the rucksack attached.Hama quality of build really shows also.

A nice light easy to set up tripod. As to be expected for the price wouldn't recommend using a heavy camera and lens(telephoto), but ideal for macro and landscape work. The height of the tripod may be an issue for some people, but i bought this as a spare extra to use on those occasions when i didn't want to carry my more expensive heavier tripod.

Really good little tripod that in my opinion is a better buy than the Manfrotto compact light and advanced series of tripods (and I'm a Manfrotto fan). It is great that you can adjust the legs for low profile shooting and reverse the ball head as well - It also comes in a tough little carrying bag as well - Highly Recommended at this price.

when the Hama traveller arrived I thought I'd made a mistake as the legs are very thin, but was surprised just how sturdy this tripod is and light weight, I don't like the bull head so changed it hence four stars but would recommend this tripod as a sturdy light weight travel tripod

Great little Tripod. Used it every day on a recent trip to Malta and Gozo. used it with my Canon 5D MKIII and 70 to 200mm lens. Heavy kit. No problem at all.The ONLY issue I had is that the small rubber feet were NOT glued on and after one shoot on some sand, all three had gone!!

25.4.2017

The tripod is light and ideal for keeping weight down when out and about. Seems well constructed, but only given four stars as it does not come with a quick release plate as stated. BWG.

Happy with purchase. Not used it much yet but happy with it so far. A little bit heavier than some others I've seen but seems more stable which is more important to me.
