I, like I am sure a lot of you, have watched countless TV cookery programmes where the "traditional potato masher" is an extinct beast, replaced with ricers of various shapes and sizes. Curiosity finally got the better of me and I took the plunge and ordered the Grunwerg ricer on Amazon.First thoughts:You definitely get a smoother mash (although the other secret to restaurant quality mash is more butter/cream than you thought possible - my arteries are thickening as I write this!!)Prepare for nimble finger work picking up hot potatoes!I takes about as long to mash your potatoes as a traditional device although it is more fiddly as you need to transfer 2/3 potatoes at a time into the device -once in there however in 2 seconds they are through and ready just to be whipped with the butter/creamGood design and grip and not too difficult to operate - obviously the harder your potatoes the harder work the ricer will beYou get some spillage out of the ricer but not much as long as you don't overload itVery robust piece of kit - looks as if it will last a long timeOverall - The ricer is now in regular use and I have not been tempted even once to go back to my "traditional device" and comments from the family on the quality of my mash have noticeably increased. A good purchase - recommended

Solidly made, large basket and easy to clean, as it comes apart at the hinge, which brings me to my only criticism - the removable hinge pin. It has a tiny plastic cap to prevent the hinge coming out. It fits snugly and is easy to remove, but I can see it getting lost at some point, plus I would imagine it will become loose with time. A much better solution would be a screw-on type cap, like a wingnut.Anyway, apart from that, this feels and works like a catering-grade item that should last a long time.UPDATE: 2 months later and after only about 8 uses, one of the spot welds has gone. I'll admit I was pressing quite hard at the time, but in my opinion,it should have survived the incident.UPDATE: I have a new one (no problems with return, as it comes with a standard 1 year guarantee). I have decided that when treated with sensible care and correct usage, this will probably last. Previously, I put the potatoes through it with the skins still on (albeit cut into quarters). I would not recommend this for 2 reasons: The skins block the holes, making the potato harder to get through and this has the knock-on effect of having to increase the pressure on the mechanism, which could lead to my previous problem of snapping a spot weld.

I read all of the reviews and decided to get one of these. Never had a 'ricer' before so nothing to compare with. My item arrived today and I wanted to try it straight away - making a cottage pie anyway- so took the opportunity to make the mash with it. The positive reviews are all correct - the mash was light and fluffy - nothing like the end product you get by conventional mashing- it tasted so good !! I used onions, sweet and normal potatoes, all boiled together- and the device just blended them all as they went through the grids. I had no problem washing it afterwards - just swilled then put into the dishwasher. I know that I will use this a lot and not just for the obvious mashed spuds - This device is very robust. It can produce very fine threads of pureed cooked veg , soft fruit etc with minimal effort. Great fun and a great price. Brilliant service as well from the seller.

This is possibly one of the best kitchen tools I have ever brought. I can now make the mash I been seeing on telly for years, no more lumps and no more of the nasty frosted hard bits. I got the jumbo version and it's certainly big, but don't let that put you off. It has a massive bucket you can pile the spuds into and then just gently squeeze then handles together. Doesn't seem fragile at all, but I guess you could break it if you had biceps like Popeye. Seems easy enough to clean, I usually wash it up immediately after use rather than letting the mash set like concrete and then it just takes a minute. We're buying potatoes by the sack now and its mash with everything.Might even get one for my brother in law for Christmas. 10/10

Yeah baby! This is why we had the industrial age! To produce functional works of art like this!!Move over Gordo Ramsey and Jimmeh Oliver! This "tool" helps take your average 1970's era mashed potato's in to at least the mid to late 80's! It really does bring another level of mashed goodness to mashed potato's :)I'd highly recommend this, especially at that price! Produces lovely riced spuds that once you add coronary levels of butter, cream and full fat milk will blow your mind (if not your arteries).Just be aware, this thing IS big and metallic and if you are finding it hurts your precious little childrens hands then you probably need to boil your spuds for longer.

have 'ummed and aaaahed' about this purchase for ages and finally took notice of the customer reviews and purchased it.why did I take so long ...I could have been using this very excellent product for months. I CAN FIND NO FAULTS WHATSOEVER.DON'T overfill it or you will get it splurging up the sides, then it's your fault and not the design, be sensible.I always simmer my potatoes gently and make sure they are fully cooked. The ricer makes beautiful little 'worms' of potato and when warm milk and/or butter are added makes the perfect mash. I purchased the large one and it does take up a fair amount of drawer space. so what, it's worth it.

This is the first potato ricer I have had. It is large, you could easily mash one potato at a time in this. My only gripe is that whilst it's great it comes with different attachments, not sure why you would need to change them but then I am not a professional, the attachments are not secure so when you lift the handle to put more potato in, the attachment comes with it, a little flick with a knife and it falls back into place. Reading other reviews apparently this is worth the little hassle as opposed to having a smaller ricer. I am happy with it anyway!

This is my second ricer, bought a cheaper one and it bend with little pressure. so opted for a little more expensive one...Bought this one after reading the online reviews. Quick delivery from supplier. First impressions its a very sturdy piece of kit.Used it for the first time a couple of days ago, handled more potatoes in bucket part than expected, had to use two hands to press, little overspill no big deal though.Easy to clean, just pulled the hinge out to separate top level.Overall very pleased with purchase for that price.

This is a very good ricer which does its job very efficiently. It should be noted however that both hands are required to squeeze the potatoes through the holes. This may sound obvious, but some ricers have a support at both ends so you press down against the bowl or pan with one or both hands on the upper handle, giving you more purchase. For most people this will not be an issue but for older people with arthritus or a muscle weakness in the arms this could be an issue.Overall it does its job better than most ricers.

Love it. Have spent a lot of money trying to find something to mash potato without getting those lumpy bits that seem so difficult to get rid of with a conventional masher in a saucepan. As long as the potato is boiled sufficiently (and I don't mean about to fall apart in the pan!) you only need one pass through this to mash to a nice consistency. If you're wanting ultra smooth, spoon it in and pass it through a second time but for me, once was enough.Seems to be built nice and solid so I'm expecting this to last.

This is a large and well made ricer and it does exactly what it says it will do. It is solid and can stand the normal kitchen abuse. My wife doesn't like the idea yet she still mashes with a masher, I am trying to convert her with my smooth riced potatoes but she still needs convincing.Clean up is a little more lengthy than a normal masher and it needs soaking to get to the solid bits. The dishwasher doesn't get to all the bit's of mash but mash is so difficult a thing for most dishwashers.

This was bigger than expected and can take all but the largest whole potatoes without the need to first cut them in half. As a catering grade product there is no fear that the item will break. Potatoes are instantly turned into a creamy purée ready to mix with milk, cream, mustard etc., to make the creamiest mash. I shall also be using the ricer to purée fruit too and will be a great way to save a glut of cooking apples by making apple sorbet or as a breakfast compote.

Massive improvement on my old cheap one. Easily rices potatoes and is capable of holding a fair amount and would be good for families. The 2 handles come apart for cleaning and are held together by a pin that runs through the pivot point. I've given it 4 stars as the potato still comes out of the sides a little and although it's fairly easy to clean it's not very easy to clean. The product is very well made and the quality feels like it should last for many years.

This is the second potato ricer i have purchased, the first was cheaper but could only fit about 1&1/2 potato's in, a lot came back over the top so forever pushing bits back in. When it broke i decided to spend more for a bigger and better quality ricer, this ricer fits a large amount potatos in, no mesh from potatos coming over the top and perfect mash every time, and easy to clean. Definately recommend the Grunwerg Jumbo Potato press.

I bought a ricer some years ago and it was rubbish. It got given away and then we went back to bashing potatoes the old fashioned way.I spotted this monster and couldn't resist.I was not dissapointed!!Potatoes go through like dream, without any leaks from the sides.Carrots (I'm prone to mashing them with potatoes) are harder work and require an earlier start in the boiling.Bloomin' lovely mash too.Recommended!
